Can IBM breathe new life into the iSeries?
For some time the iSeries has been struggling to attract new users, as well as retain the ones it already has. Less-expensive alternative platforms have slowly pulled users away, and confusion about what an iSeries is has prevented new users from coming on board. Whether the server will continue to survive has always been on the minds of users.
But recent executive changes in the iSeries division and new features and products could be just what the doctor ordered.
Recently Lotus' Al Zollar replaced Buell Duncan as head of the iSeries group. In a recent Search400.com article, many users, experts and IBM Business Partners said IBM made a good move. They say Zollar is more channel-focused, and that this characteristic is essential in successfully marketing the iSeries.
And today IBM made news with several announcements, including new iSeries servers featuring POWER4 processors; new Capacity Upgrade on Demand (CUoD) technology, which allows users to use only the resources they need; and price improvements. IBM calls it the reinvented iSeries.
Can the iSeries be reinvented? Can these changes and new features drive up interest in the system? Some analysts say yes. What do you think? Send me your comments, including your name, title and company. We will use some of the comments in a future article. Then click over and take our poll.

Changing a line description through OpsNav
"Scoots" needs to change a line description that must be done through OpsNav. The problem: He can connect OK, but he receives Winsock error 10061. He's tried starting all the host servers, but to no avail. Using the Netstat command, he can see all the Client Access ports -- 8470 to 8479. He wonders what the problem is. Two people offered suggestions. Read what they said or post your own advice.

V5R2 command changes
"Troutman2000" writes, "I'm looking for some kind of reference or chart that tells me what commands have been changed from V4R5 to V5R2. I'm looking to see if there have been any added or deleted fields to any of the commands." Do you know of any such reference or chart?

Graphs from iSeries physical files
"Jtaylor" is looking for a way to create graphs using iSeries physical files. Currently, he uses the CPYTOPCD command and creates the graphs in Excel. He's hoping to find a way to create the graphs on the fly, preferably in HTML to solve the distribution problem. Have any ideas? Click over and post them.

| Tip of the Week: |
Take command of your commands
User-defined commands are one of the most under utilized
objects in OS/400. The way they are defined, created and
used is often misunderstood, so programmers stay away from
them. Once they're mastered, however, they become a great
tool to have in your toolbox. Site expert John Kohan
explains these commands and provides a brief example to get
you started using them.
