Time for IT workers to unionize?

In recent weeks, we've received countless numbers of e-mails from readers who claim the government is allowing businesses to exploit work visas while they, the IT worker, pay the price. Few subjects that we've addressed on Search400.com have sparked such outrage from our readers. Nearly everyone who responded has been affected by the increasing practice of companies replacing American workers with foreign workers and almost everyone believes it's time for IT workers to unite.

IT workers unionize?

John M. Miano, a programmer turned law student, believes it's time. Here's what he says:

"I'm glad to see interest in H1-B picking up. When I started getting involved in 1996, people thought I was nuts. Now they say I was prophetic.

"However, I still don't see widespread activity in the programming community over this. While interest has been picking up, I estimate the total number of *ACTIVE* programmers fighting this is about 4,000 in the entire country.

"The groups that have led the fight against H1-B -- the American Engineering Association and the Programmers Guild and the Independent Computer Consultants Association -- are still tiny. Until programmers actually start to organize, nothing is going to get done to stop the offshoring. I'm shocked we have not had a national programmers strike already."

Do you agree with Miano? Or is organizing IT workers into a union impossible, ridiculous or simply unnecessary?

Tip of the Week:
Utility helps you get information about logical files faster, easier
by Tim Granatir

Are you building a new program and looking for particular logical files? You could use one of the utilities already out there, but Search400.com expert Tim Granatir has one that's even better. With it you can just look at the source member of the object or a logical file and get information about that file immediately.
