Search400.com kicks off 2003 IT Excellence Awards

You work hard on projects throughout the year. Wouldn't it be nice to receive recognition for those projects? That's what we hope to do with Search400.com's 2003 IT Excellence Awards.

We started this awards program last year as a way to recognize medium- and large-scale end-user companies that are taking the iSeries to new limits in iSeries computing. Top honors went to Cole National's Things Remembered in the E-business category and The Chamberlain Group Inc. in the Scalability category.

This year we've made a few enhancements and modifications to make the IT Excellence Awards even better. One is that in addition to the top winner, we will also select an honorable mention winner for each category.

Another thing that's different is the categories. We still have the e-business category, but this time the second category will be for high availability. Here are the descriptions:

IT Excellence for E-business
This award recognizes developers and end-user companies who have taken Web development for the iSeries to the next level using Java, WebSphere Development Tools, RPG and other tools. Nominees will have created original, innovative Web applications that take the company to the next step in Web access. Nominees must describe the applications in detail as well as the business benefit they deliver. Submissions of screen shots or URLs that the judges can use to assess application functionality are strongly encouraged.

IT Excellence for High Availability
This award recognizes developers, systems managers and end-user companies that are ensuring maximum system uptime and availability to users, business partners and/or customers. Nominees must demonstrate excellence in building iSeries environments that support large databases, transaction loads or transmission rates. Applications that demonstrate creative approaches to overcoming availability issues in a 24x7 environment are preferred. Disaster recovery should also have been considered. Nominees must describe the availability issues they encountered, detail how they resolved them, and describe the business benefits of their solution.

The awards honor IT achievers at end-user companies who design, build and manage these complex technologies. Particular consideration is given to projects that have a significant impact on the business, increase efficiency, significantly reduce costs and provide demonstrable ROI. Nominations for vendors are not allowed, but vendors may nominate their clients and customers.

When submitting your nomination, please answer all the questions and provide as many details as possible. The more information you provide, the better your chances.

The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, Sept. 19. The winners will be announced in a virtual awards ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 14. All winners will be required to participate in this live webcast.

We know many of you are doing new and innovative things with your iSeries. Go ahead, tell us about them.

Kami has created a client application that connects to a Host application on socket. He wants the client app to have a definite local port "3000". Tip of the Week:
Monitor your job
by John Kohan

Want to know when a batch job is in a "MSGW" (Message Wait) status in QBATCH? You could place message monitors in CL programs to trap those messages and take the appropriate action. But unfortunately, that can't always be accomplished. Several different developer processes may run on any given iSeries. You may, however, monitor your system for MSGW jobs with just a few simple lines of code.
