After some agonizing, France has taken "courriel," used in Quebec for years, as the official word for "e-mail." Basically, France's ministry of culture (the gurus of all things Gallic) caved because they couldn't think of anything better -- and anything would be better than the English-sounding "l'e-mail." But other words you hear in Montreal will continue to mortify in Marseille, be snubbed in Strasbourg, trashed in Toulon and protested in Paris. France has refused to adopt Quebec's terms for "spam" and "chat" because they're too "familiar."
