On-demand blitz bugging IT?

No doubt you've heard of on-demand computing, an enterprise model in which computing resources are made available to users on an as needed basis. No doubt your CIO has, too. But are you and your CIO on the same page when it comes to understanding on-demand computing and where it fits into your organization?

Recently, I talked to a couple of programmers who said they recognized the potential of on-demand computing and all its related models, such as grid and utility computing, but they were concerned about the enthusiasm their CIOs had for the concepts. These programmers believed that their CIOs got caught up in marketing blitzes and have unrealistic expectations about the availability of on-demand. As a result, they said their CIOs are putting pressure on IT to "implement" on-demand.

While it's not uncommon for programmers and CIOs to have different views of technology and issues related to IT, the disparity between viewpoints regarding on-demand seem to be a particularly hot button lately.

Do you and your CIO see eye-to-eye when it comes to implementing the on-demand model? Perhaps you both agree it's the greatest computing advance since mobile computing. Or, are you butting heads over the issue? Search400.com is interested in your position. Send your comments to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and then take our poll: Is your CIO pressuring you to implement on-demand computing technologies?

>> Working with the WebFacing statistics file
"Vjunction66" is trying to create a WebFaced application. Sometimes he gets the "collecting statistics" window, but not all the time. When he does get this window, it runs all day. He's applied the latest fix pack and doesn't know where to turn next. Search400.com Web development expert Jim Mason steps forward to see if he can help him figure it out.

>> Restoring a server document
"RayR" wonders how to restore a document from SAV. He can see the windows storage area, but no document/folders on dsptap -- QFPNWSSTG/(server)/(stg1). Can you help him out?

>> AS/400 or iSeries?
"Raju400" asks, "What's the difference between an AS/400 and iSeries machine? Are there certain characteristics required to call an AS/400 an iSeries?" Site expert John Brandt offers a short iSeries history lesson.

Tip of the Week:
Print off the iSeries to a remote location
by Tim Granatir

With the virtual workforce of today, remote connectivity and support is essential. What often gets overlooked, however, is remote printing. Whether you're a programmer working from home or a support person trying to diagnose a program problem, chances are you would like to be able to print remotely. Fortunately, this is easy to do through Client Access. Follow these steps to set up remote printing quickly.
