Understanding the ins-and-outs of activation groups -- Part I
Activation groups are an iSeries programmer's dream come true. They provide tremendous application design flexibility, and as designed, an ILE program could not run without activation groups. But they can also be an administrator's worst nightmare.
Reduce static storage
The variables in an ILE RPG module or program can be divided into three storage (memory) classes: static, automatic, and heap (or dynamic.) These classes determine how and when storage is allocated, used and freed. If a program uses a lot of static storage, and has many instances active at once, performance may suffer. Search400.com member Nick Hobson provides techniques that could dramatically reduce the static storage requirements of such a program, without necessitating a total rewrite.
Crossing activation groups
One Search400.com member read that when an activation group *CALLER is specified, the program runs in the activation group from which it was called. He thought that it might be a problem if the EPM program was called by an OPM program and ran in a default activation group. Site expert John Brandt discusses some of the multiple problems that can occur by crossing activation groups, and explains the simplest workaround.
