Search400.com member Praveshree Mahabeer shows you how in this Hall of Fame tip. >> CLICK here for the full tip: http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci916355,00.html ================================================================== Answers to Other Programmer Questions ================================================================== MAKE A SPOOL FILE DISAPPEAR A Search400.com member wanted to know if it's possible to make spool files disappear after seven days. Not exactly, according to site expert Ken Graap, but he does offer an alternative method for getting rid of them. http://search400.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid3_cid524103_tax285220,00.html DETERMINE THE SIZE OF A SPOOL FILE WITHIN AN RPG PROGRAM A user wanted to break a spool file into pieces according to the media he's going to save it to (CD, diskette, etc.) Is there any way to determine the size of the spool file within RPG program (infds), he asked. Site expert John Brandt had some advise. http://search400.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid3_cid528332_tax285220,00.html USE ABTOBJUSR COMMAND TO ELIMINATE BATCH JOB HEADACHE Have you ever submitted a batch job only to find out it has failed because there happened to be a user session accessing the file? This can be quite annoying. Here is a command that site expert Dwight Beech set up that allows you, the developer or administrator, to warn users accessing a file, program, data area, etc. and then end their session if needed. http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci841339,00.html SECURE PRINTED OUTPUT In today's security-conscious environment, most iSeries shops have been busy investing in improved security for their systems. Object-level security is being locked down, and users are being classified as to what they can and cannot do when they are logged on to the system. But securing files is only part of the solution. If a user can't look at a file, but can look at processed output sitting in a print-spool file, then your hard work of locking up the files could be all for nothing. http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci873680,00.html ___________________________________________________________________ IMPORTANT MESSAGES AND LINKS: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= WEBCAST PREMIERE | iSeries FTP automation made easy Guest speaker: Thibault Dambrine, owner, TYLOGIX Consulting Inc. There's no doubt that FTP is the most convenient communication tool on the iSeries. Being able to do a manual transfer here and there is good, but to get some real use out of this type of utility, you need to be able to program it and control it using table-driven variables. This opens the door to scheduled transfers and the ability to feed data for business users on multiple platforms on a regular basis. How would you automate an FTP function? How would you go about creating a process to transfer a different file every day to different systems, the same file to different destinations or a combination of both? Thibault Dambrine shows you how easy it can be. >> LISTEN to broadcast: http://webevents.broadcast.com/techtarget/search400/061703/index.asp?loc=09 >> DOWNLOAD the handout from Thibault's presentation: http://search400.techtarget.com/search400/downloads/Dambrine_slides.ppt =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= EXPERT PROFILE | John Brandt, Search400.com expert John Brandt is vice president of technical services at iStudio400.com, an IBM business partner.
