What can iSeries pros do to remain employed?
In a recent Search400.com poll we asked readers if their job was less secure or more secure than a year ago. Unfortunately, 68% of the more than 200 respondents said they felt their jobs were more at risk this year compared to last.
Are we surprised? Not really. But we are concerned.
Responses we've received from many of you on other issues related to job security indicate that the economy is the biggest factor affecting you. We also know that outsourcing, trade agreements and visa programs are making you wonder if you'll have a job tomorrow. Shifts in business requirements, slashed budgets and the proliferation of Windows and other Intel-based platforms are working their way onto your turf, making the situation even more tenuous.
We know there is little you can do about the economy and other factors affecting your job security. But what about skill set? What skills will iSeries professionals need now and, more important, in the near future to remain employed -- at least for the next 10 years -- or until you reach retirement -- whichever comes first? What jobs skills will be required of an iSeries programmer or systems administrator in the next few years? Do you even believe a different skill set will be required of you? Are you doing anything now to make sure your skills are up to date and in demand?
Is there something that worked for you specifically to help you secure your job? Is there some trend you see on the horizon that suggests you get trained in that area? Perhaps you're just steadfast and hoping things will turnaround in your favor.
We really want to know how you're handling this job crisis? Send you comments to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], then take our poll.

Conventional RPG vs. embedded SQL
"KLChan" needs to enhance an inquiry module to retrieve customer information. Due to the complexity of user requirement in record filtering and sorting, the existing native RPG code requires 30 seconds to retrieve those records in a subfile. He wants to improve the throughput, but he needs help determining the best way to do it. Can you help?

Determine printer IP address
"Qc2000" said, "I'm often asked if a printer with IP address 111.22.333 etc. is defined to the 400. The only way I've found to answer this question is to do WRKDEVD *PRT and to retrieve the source into a file, then query the file to see if the requested address is there. Is there a better way to answer that?" |

| Tip of the Week: |
Copy spool files to a PC text file
If you'd like to copy spool files to a PC text file (if you have Client Access), there is an alternative to using the CPYSPLF command and then doing a data transfer from the iSeries. Search400.com member Praveshree Mahabeer shows you how in this Hall of Fame tip.
