Fall COMMON: Orlando's a draw, but why?

The summer is drawing to a close, which means the Fall COMMON User Conference must be right around the corner. This time iSeries users will head to the tropical climes and amusement park adventures of Orlando, Fla. From Sept. 7-11, they'll get their fill of educational sessions, labs and Mickey Mouse.

Organizers hoped the fall conference would attract more users than the poorly attended spring conference in Indianapolis, and things seem to be working in their favor. Last week COMMON officials said the conference hotel -- The Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center -- is booked up and that they had to get additional rooms at nearby Orlando Marriott World Center Resort.

That got us thinking: What's the reason for this upswing? Is it related to COMMON's new housing policy that requires attendees to stay at its reserved hotels? Are more people attending because they need to improve their skills to stay employed? Are companies more willing to pay for travel and education? Or are users coming with their family in tow, looking to spend time at Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, etc.?

What do you think? E-mail me and let me know. And if you plan to attend the conference, what do you hope to get out of it? Are there specific courses of study you're interested in? If you regularly attend the COMMON conferences, have you seen any shift in special interests?

The Search400.com team will be there. So, while you're cruising the Expo, stop by booth 129 and say hi. We'd love to meet you.

>> IPDS overlays
"Ariokol" says they use AFP to create document overlays for printing with IPDS, but it seems that it's also possible to create a document in something such as Word and then transfer it to the iSeries. Is that possible? "CLKelly" says so and provides a document on how to create overlays from PC Word documents.

>> iSeries mail server doesn't authenticate on e-mail Sends
"Kweber" writes, "We just discovered that our iSeries mail server doesn't authenticate on e-mail Sends (so spoofing is a possibility). This is such a big, obvious hole that I know we must not have all the facts. There's a wizard for V5R2, but we won't be there for a couple of months. Anybody know if there's a quick fix that can hold us until we get to V5R2 or know what we're missing?"

>> Applying PTFs on primary partition
"Qc2000" asks, "When applying PTFs on a primary partition, is it necessary to bring down all the secondary partitions in order to IPL the primary partition?" "Dwl" has some advice.

Tip of the Week:
Dynamically transfer files via FTP

How would you like to have a program that dynamically creates an iSeries FTP script, runs the FTP and then checks for errors? Search400.com expert Tim Granatir shares one that he's written, as well as a few FTP tricks, tips and gotchas you should be aware of.
