The buzz about UCCnet
We have heard a lot lately -- and I mean a lot -- about UCCnet, the global, Internet-based electronic commerce service designed to help companies improve supply-chain efficiency. Most, if not all, of the chatter comes from vendors introducing new products that support UCCnet standards. But we know big name companies such as Wal-Mart, FoodLion and Pathmark use UCCnet services and are requiring their suppliers conform to the standard.
Here's what else we know:
The use of inaccurate trading data has cost the industry tens of billions of dollars annually in supply-chain errors, bottlenecks and time-to-market delays. Proponents say UCCnet's foundational services eliminate those problems. They provide the following:
- A single, standards-based source to publish and access product and trading partner information. For manufacturers and retailers, this eliminates the need to send or receive product information in multiple formats. (Information from UCCnet Web site.)
- Data integrity across the entire global supply chain, which enables companies to internally and externally feed their systems with the same accurate information.
- A cost-effective and time-efficient means for companies to electronically trade and communicate industry-compliant data and best business practices.
Here's what we're not sure of:
- How prevalent is this among businesses running iSeries servers?
- What are some of the major issues surrounding UCCnet as an iSeries customer?
- Has UCCnet improved your business? If so, how?
- What vendors do you use and why?
- What kind of UCCnet-related problems would you like to see resolved?
Help me fill in the blanks on this very, very hot topic among the B2B community as we plan extensive coverage of UCCnet in November. Take our poll and then send your comments to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Interactive overload? Take a closer look at your programs
by Tim Granatir
If your apps have sections that use a lot of CPU, you might want to make those subroutines separate programs. Then the heavy work can be done in batch via client/server and returned to the program. |
