What iSeries users have to be thankful for

Thursday is Thanksgiving in the U.S. It's customary for all of us to reflect on the things we're thankful for. You may be thankful for a secure job, good health, the fact that you live in a free country, or simply that you have the means to provide your family with a Thanksgiving feast.

Have you stopped to think about the many reasons you're thankful to be a part of the iSeries community. What has the iSeries done for you over the years? A couple years ago we introduced our top 10 reasons to be thankful for the iSeries. This week we take a refreshed look at the industry and users. The following are our top 10 reasons to be thankful you're an iSeries user:

10. The iSeries is a living and growing platform. It provides iSeries professionals with continued challenges and new technologies to learn. And IBM won't be leaving it behind anytime soon, promising to spend $500 million on iSeries development over two years.

9. The iSeries has an "uptime" of 99.9%.

8. The demand and salaries for iSeries professionals looks to be on the rise for 2004.

7. When you're working with an iSeries server you do NOT need a new server for every new application.

6. You'll always have a fresh stack of business cards. Are you a System/38, AS/400, AS/400e or an iSeries professional? Don't order them just yet; a new name may be on the horizon.

5. Reliability, reliability, reliability. And if you're a system administrator, those are the three most beautiful words in the world. One administrator writes, "My iSeries is ALWAYS available for my end users!" That's true even when it's been through a flood, fire or fall. (See "Tales from the AS/400 crypt -- they're alive!".)

4. You'll never find a more dedicated or passionate group than iSeries users when it comes to showing support for the system. One user writes, "The iSeries is the most rock solid computer ever built!"

3. The iSeries is more secure than other servers against viruses and other attacks. If it weren't for Windows, most iSeries professionals would say, "What's a virus?"

2. If you're a "dinosaur" you should be proud! In what other profession is it a complement to be called a dinosaur? Did you know that the majority of iSeries professionals are over the age of 50?

And the Number 1 reason ...

>> Working on the iSeries systems provides you with the pleasure of NOT needing an army of highly technical, young or beautiful people to give you perfectly good reasons for not getting what you want.

This Week: In the forums
>> Checking libraries on the iSeries
"JohnnyAitch" wonders if there is a quick way to see if a library on an iSeries is empty. "Mrusso" says yes there is. Check out what else he had to say.

>> Setting up a 5494 controller
"Mmorgan" has been assigned the task of setting up a new warehouse. He purchased a 5494 controller and has the modems at different locations. He has a handle on the configuration, but he could use a little help with the cables. Is this something you've done recently? Why not click over and help him out?

>> DB2/400 database/Web page access
"494corpceo" was in search of IBM documentation on the iSeries that provided examples on using APIs to have a Web/PC-based Web page access a DDS DB2/400 database on the iSeries. Fortunately, some Search400.com members had some advice for him.

Tip of the Week:
Rev up the IFS with *TYPE2 directories
by Tim Granatir

If you've used the IFS for any length of time, you've probably noticed that performance is sometimes lackluster. But it doesn't have to be that way. Under V5R2, *TYPE2 directories provide a much-needed boost.
