EXPERT ADVICE
Blocking uploads to iSeries
Carol Woodbury, security advice

Dear Carol,
I'm in the process of implementing ODBC on my iSeries. How can I prevent users from uploading data back to the iSeries? I have no problem with my user's downloading data; I don't want them uploading data. Also can security be placed at the library level? What third-party vendors do you recommend, if any?

Ask an expert:
How can I access my Microsoft or Sybase SQL server from within an RPG program? Simple solution: iS/ODBC. No Java, no PCs, just data. Easy to use APIs. No programming experience? No problem. OS/400 commands to retrieve from an SQL server, write and/or update DB2 on AS/400-iSeries database and build your local files on the fly. Putting data? Send your AS/400-iSeries data to SQL server to write, update or delete data on your remote SQL server.

FORUM ADVICE
Reply to an inquiry message automatically
"Smithe26" writes, "I need to be able to automatically answer an inquiry message from with in a CL -- specifically my overnight backups. I'm getting the message, 'CPA4088 - load next tape volume'. The drive automatically changes tapes, but it's not quick enough to avoid this message. How can I automatically reply to this message, but with a two-minute delay in the response?"

THE MISSING LINK
Red rover, red rover; send those Mars pix right over

Houston, we have a hit. NASA's trip to space has been a huge hit in cyberspace -- 250 million hits so far, to be approximate. The landing of the space agency's Spirit rover on Mars is on a course to becoming NASA's biggest Web draw ever. The hits will probably keep on coming, now that color pictures of the red planet are being posted to NASA sites. NASA is using 1,300 servers around this planet to host Web pages containing details of the mission.
