Meet Search400.com's newest systems management expert

We're pleased to introduce you to Search400.com's newest site expert, Glen Bunnell. Glen joins us this month as a systems management expert.

Glen is an IT supervisor at Sturm Foods Inc. in Manawa, Wisc. He's been working with the iSeries for 14 years and has a wide range of expertise. His skills include RPG III, RPG IV, iSeries ILE, open query files, embedded SQL, advanced subfile programming, operations background, operating systems upgrade and hardware upgrades. If you're tackling a difficult project and have systems management questions, Glen's the man you'll want to talk to.

Glen has spent most of those 14 years in a manufacturing background with a little in experience in retail sales. He has been involved in all aspects of the company from financials to order entry through manufacturing and production through the distribution system. He has held many positions -- from computer operator to programmer to senior programmer analyst to his current position.

Glen is also familiar with the network side of things, including the IFS and installing a Netfinity server in an iSeries box with Windows 2000. He has worked with several manufacturing software packages, such as BPCS, Harris Data and Infinium payroll software. He also possesses a working knowledge of RF (radio frequency) and wiring (Ethernet and Twinax).

Glen is here to address and answer all of you systems management questions. Please make him feel welcome and send in your questions today.

Glen has already been busy answering member-submitted questions, so be sure to check out those Q&A's, too.

This Week: In the forums
>> Changing names in SPLF report
"Kpatter" has a job that his operator runs and attaches her name to the user in the spool file. He has another user that needs to look at the report but can't get into the operator's SPLF. He wondered how he could change the user on the SPLF from the operator's name to the user's name. "Rmalloy" knew just what to do.

>> Problem bringing up the HTTP server *admin
"EJIMENEZ" writes, "We have a model 820 iSeries. I'm having a problem bringing up the HTTP *ADMIN. When I type STRTCPSVR *all, only the default instance is up and running on the *ADMIn and APACHEDFT. The job is cancelled with a SIGKILL message." Do you know what's going on?

>> Using switches in RPG
"Openqryf" wondered where switches were useful in RPG? Site expert John Brandt and "Charles400" didn't think that they were useful at all. What's your opinion? Do you still use them?

Tip of the Week:
Revisit your database naming conventions
by Paul Tuohy

There is something that has been annoying me for quite a while. It is one of those niggling little things that we have been doing for so long that we take it for granted. We do it for historical reasons and take it for granted that that is the way we have to do it. I am talking about the naming conventions we use on our databases. In fact, your methods could be doing more harm than good.

Security tip
How's your system integrity?

IBM proudly touts the OS/400 as a highly secure environment and one that has been immune to virus and tampering. Recently, security guru Rich Loeber stumbled over the CHKOBJITG command on his system. If OS/400 is so secure, what's the deal with this command?
