Why service programs need binding source
[Search400.com]
by Paul Tuohy
When you start to delve into the wonderful world of ILE and service programs, you quickly come across binding source. You know you should use it, but you're not sure why. Here is an explanation of what binding source provides and reasons for using it.
How to bind a directory to a program
[Search400.com]
A user asks, "How many methods are there to bind a directory to the program? I know of CRTPGM. Is there any other way?" Site expert John Brandt explains.
Changing a procedure within a service program
[Search400.com]
A user said he made a minor change to a procedure within a service program. He thought that the change would take effect for all existing programs using that service program, but he had to recompile each program before it would use the newer version. What was he missing? Site expert John Brandt fills in the blanks.
Allow users to see why they are locked
[Search400.com]
It's sometimes useful for users to be able to see by themselves which user/job is locking their update process. When you know who's locking you, and where he is, a single phone call may solve your problem. For that reason, Search400.com member Thierry Schmitz created a service program that, when called after a record lock is encountered in an interactive program upon a file opened in update, retrieves the information related to
the locking job and user and displays a lock notifying window.
