The AS/400, iSeries and now . . . the i5

Hold on to your hat. There's a new name for the AS/400 -- just when we were finally comfortable with iSeries . Now we have the i5.

Yes, it's true -- we now have the i5 model 570 and i5 model 520. This next generation of iSeries servers is based on the Power5 chip and will run Linux, AIX and Windows. And, as we've been expecting for a while, it will be for both iSeries and pSeries users.

If that weren't enough, IBM is also changing the name of the operating system to i5/OS. Sure, you've heard everyone talking about V5R3, but they were just waiting to tell us about the switch. Actually, the new operating system name was first mentioned in July 2001 not long after the iSeries name was unveiled.

So, what's in a name? Some of you might say nothing. In fact, when IBM changed the name of the AS/400 to iSeries in the fall of 2000, users grumbled that it was just a marketing ploy that didn't have any real strategy behind it. And quite a few of you refused to call it by its new name, simply calling it the 400.

This time, however, IBM shows there is substance to the change as it puts the iSeries at the center of its strategy to converge technologies. It's saying that the platform most certainly has a future -- in some form.

What we'd like to know is if you agree. What do you think of the name change? Of the technology changes? Is it the beginning of the end for the beloved platform? Take our poll, then if you have more to get off your chest, post your comments in our Sound Off! forum.

These changes are just the most recent in a long list of modifications. Take our quiz (this week's featured topic) to find out how much you remember about past models and versions of the operating system.

ILE CL can boost productivity and performance
by Ron Turull

In case you hadn't noticed, the CL language is an official ILE language. There are many obvious advantages to this. There are also some that are not so obvious. And some seeming advantages are not advantages at all!
