Unsung IT heroes

When you think of IT heroes, you usually think of the heavy-hitters -- people whose innovative ideas have truly changed how we work and live. We have, among others, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founders of Google; Ray Ozzie, who invented Notes; Linus Torvalds, who wrote the Linux kernel; and, of course, Dr. Frank Soltis, who created the revolutionary computer architecture used in today's iSeries.

But we all know there are thousands of little guys in IT shops around the world who have conducted their own feats of heroism. They may not make CNN's Headline News, but for the users in their companies their efforts are exceptional and worth recognizing. Whether it's successfully recovering from an unexpected outage, improving the effectiveness of the company's e-commerce site, enhancing data entry methods, or fixing a printing glitch, these acts frequently make our lives easier as well as save the company money.

Here's your chance to honor those unsung IT heroes. Send me your IT hero stories, and I'll put them in an article so we can give them the recognition they deserve. And you don't need to wait for your boss to nominate you. If you did something you're proud of -- or your co-worker did something -- send in the story yourself.

>> Creating an OPAL to move jobs between Jobqs
Search400.com member "Magiw1" writes, "I'd like to create an Operator Assistance Language (OPAL) that is capable of scanning jobqs and moving a specific job from jobq A -- if it is found there -- and placing it in jobq B." Any thoughts on whether OPAL is capable of this task?

>> WebFacing and iSeries access for the Web
"Carlos0" needed to call a WebFaced application from his iSeries access and wasn't sure how to call it without the authenticated screen. Thankfully, "GCHRIS" was on hand to provide some help.

>> OPNQRYF and JFLD newbie
"Mistert" is new to working with OPNQRYF. He's trying to join two files. In the first file, he wants to grab the records with key values (tabletype) 'ESMAK' and 'NSCNO' and then use the field-table key from those records to join them with a master file. He keeps getting an empty record set, and he knows that it should have about 500 records. Confused and tired, he turned to Search400.com's Discussion Forum for help. And "CLKelly" came to his rescue.
