Are you keeping your cool?
Attendees at the Data Center Decisions 2004 conference, held earlier this month in Chicago, confirmed something we have long suspected -- cooling has become a real issue within data centers. (Read the full story.)
Here's the problem: Vendors are developing smaller, more energy-efficient servers, but data centers are using more of them. In some cases, two small servers can generate as much heat as a mainframe. Put 250 of those servers in one data center, and you've got a major cooling problem.
The situation is compounded by poor design of the data center. Consolidation is a great remedy for server sprawl, as it reduces the number of systems to manage. But depending on the type of servers that are installed and how they're stacked, you can still have several servers stuffed in a room that was probably designed for only one or two large servers.
One data center manager told me that about 30% of his job is spent managing cooling issues, and he only expects the problem to get worse, as his company has plans to consolidate onto blade servers within the next several months.
Is this a big problem for iSeries shops? Do you find yourself taking a Band-Aid approach to cooling the data center? What are you doing to address the issue? Let us know how you're keeping your cool -- or not. E-mail me, and take our poll.
