Upgrade your skills through Search400.com's book excerpts
One of the unique resources that Search400.com provides is access to relevant content and helpful information. The Search400.com team is always looking for ways to bring you the knowledge to solve your iSeries problems and provide the top resources for you to explore.
Recently we expanded our book excerpt library. We currently have 16 different chapter excerpts -- and we're always adding to them. These resources are available for free and will help you gain some insight into specific iSeries topics or give you some perspective on an iSeries book that you may consider purchasing.
Check out two of our most recent excerpts:
* Experts' Guide to OS/400 & i5/OS Security
Written by two of the industry's most knowledgeable security experts, Carol Woodbury and IBM's Patrick Botz, this book is your ticket to a secure enterprise. This excerpt -- from the chapter on Single Sign-on strategies -- addresses problems associated with the multitude of user IDs and passwords your users must remember.
* The Modern RPG IV Language, Third Edition
Chapter 3 from this book (written by Bob Cozzi and published by MC Press) focuses on support for expressions in RPG IV. Learn how you can extend normal conditional logic, keyword support and calculations through the user of natural expressions.
Is there another book you're interested in? Check our directory for an excerpt. If you don't see what you want, e-mail us and we'll try to get a sample chapter for you.

Create a logical file based on a DDS function substring
"Kendlin" wondered if it was possible to create a logical file that has a new field(s) based on a substring of one of the physical files fields. "Bhullar" said it was possible and provided the necessary information to get him started.

Detect cursor location in COBOL
"Soonsin" coded a DSPF with RTNCSRLOC, but he needs to know how to build an interface between DSPF and the COBOL program to define and detect the cursor location. Do you know how to accomplish this? If so, "Soonsin" could really use your help.

Is performance DATA running?
"BhalRai" writes, "I have two libraries on my iSeries (V5R2M0) -- QPFRDATA and QMPGDATA. I'm not sure if performance DATA is running on the iSeries. Can I just do ENDPFRMON, CLRLIB QPFRDATA and CLRLIB QMPGDATA? I want to get rid of these libraries, but I'm not sure if this will cause a problem to my system." "RMalloy" offers a few suggestions and things to be aware of. |

Is file level-checking still necessary? You bet
by Ron Turull
The ILE programming model has drastically changed the way we program on the AS/400-iSeries. We now have modules, service programs, activation groups and a list of other new language-dependent and language-independent "features." But in this haze of new programming concepts, do we still need to worry about file level-checking? |
