Where have all the apps gone?

A recent Search400.com article (Survey: Lack of apps still plagues iSeries shops) reported that there's a serious lack of applications for the iSeries. So, you have this amazing machine, but you have to search high and low to find applications for it -- or write your own. What's going on?

When the AS/400 was announced in 1988, IBM and IBM business partners announced at the same time more than 1,000 software packages for the platform. Fast forward to today, and we have a new line of i5 servers but few applications to go with it. I find that unusual, considering the size of IBM's software division. In the past couple of years, IBM has acquired several software companies and, in fact, in its stock was reclassified on the FTSE All World Index as a software and services company rather than a hardware company. One would think that IBM would be able to develop its own applications for the iSeries.

As for third-party applications, data centers' increased shift to Windows and other platforms has certainly had an effect. If fewer people are using the iSeries, why should companies develop products for it? Additionally, IBM's past negligence of software vendors continues to affect development.

Yes, IBM is investing billions of dollars into getting ISVs and business partners to develop applications for the iSeries, and yes, it is reinvigorating the server line with new models and technologies. But is it enough?

What do you think? Will IBM's recent initiatives give the iSeries market the boost it needs? Will having more applications attract more customers? Will the new server models attract more customers? E-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your thoughts.

"ISCRussell" writes, "We are trying to do a save option 21 and are running into all sorts of time issues. The actual save appears to take about two hours, but the entire job is running 13-plus hours. The operator cancels the job, and we bring the system back up. We notice that the tape contains all the libraries, and when we look at the job log we see that all the saves have been completed." Does anyone know what's going on?
