Have a question about your iSeries? ITKE it
ITKE? What is it and why am I using it as a verb?
ITKE -- ITKnowledge Exchange -- is our new member service, an innovative online community where you can exchange knowledge, share expertise and get answers to your technical and strategic questions from IT pros around the globe.
ITKE far surpasses traditional list servs or forum offerings. In fact, this kind of "peer network" has the potential to render those venerable symbols of the Web obsolete. Once you build your profile and log in, you have immediate and direct access to a vast and specific network of your peers who are grappling with similar issues in a private and easy-to-use environment.
ITKE is a network of iSeries users and other IT practitioners with the precise experience and qualifications that you specify. In fact, you can customize your ideal audience by selecting specific areas of expertise in advance. Whether you are in the research phase evaluating a new product, about to make a purchasing decision or you are in the midst of implementation, you can be sure that there are fellow geeks that can help steer you in the right direction.
Along with analysts, architects, programmers, engineers, admins and systems managers, we have invited your favorite experts from Search400.com to participate, including
* John Brandt -- vice president of technical services, iStudio400.com
* Ken Graap -- senior AS/400e system administrator, Northwest Natural Gas
So if you have a tough iSeries, OS/400, DB2, RPG, Java or WebSphere question, ITKE it!

Remote console & system save
"283900" asks, "Is it possible to set up a remote console from home, and if so can you do a system save from a remote console? We have to do a system save on our 270 on the weekend and would like to not have to come in to do it." "Skitch210" says it's possible but not highly recommended.

Converting .Netdata macro use statement from original to Apache server
"Stuartjg" needs your help. He's trying to convert his original HTTP Web instances to Apache server instances. A few of his Web pages use .Netdata macros and the DB2 WWW program to call a CL program from the Web pages. He can't work out how to enter statements so he can still use the .Netdata applications under Apache. Click over if you have any advice. |

How to set up an autostart job
by Ron Turull
More than likely you have run into a situation where you wanted a program or command to run automatically when, for example, the system IPL'd. The obvious solution in this instance is to put the necessary code into your start-up program. But what do you do when you want a program to run automatically only when a specific subsystem is started? The answer: Attach an autostart job entry to the subsystem. |

Use caution when providing access to file shares
By Carol Woodbury
Although file shares are a convenient way to share data throughout a corporation, defining shares can create serious security exposures if OS/400 object authority hasn't been utilized. Follow these steps to make sure the correct people have permission to create and change file shares.
