Yes David is blind and blind folks can fish.I have done it myself. You can feel the fish biting the bate by the slight pulls on the rod. When this happens you pull the rod up strongly to set the hook, and then reel in the fish.I am planning the london level for the Sarah game but need David's help to move the castle ground floor to another level if possible.I am not sure how much time that would take.David just posted this message:I think I found the problem. My worry is that it may be more than one issue.  Could you please send me your error.log file found in the SOD data folder so that I can check if you have the error I have fixed. I never thaught that there would be support for SAPI and Screenreaders in this game. Grate Idea. So if you don't like the EVA Voices, just use your screenreader or Sapi. I find when using NVDA and Elliquence or ESpeak, the game is very snappy fast. Now that David has implemented SAPI and Screenreader support, maybe a level editor where we can create our own maps, monsters, weapons, story campaines, custom players to fit a campaines, etc. Who knows. But I feel like the SAPI and Screenreader support just opened alot of doors here.I'll have to post to the email list about this.

Hi Folks,In the most recent beta version, 20018, the SAPI default volume is very low.Until David gets the next version out, the easiest fix is to hit enter until you hear the warning alarm in the passage, Press F12, and then up arrow several times to increase the volume, then press Enter.  You could also copy sodDefault.ini from the installation folder to sod.ini in your data folder.Regards,David Greenwooddavidgreenw...@gmagames.comhttp://www.GMAGames.com

I'm noticing a possible bug in the first level where sometimes a couple data wafers don't show up. I'll kill every enemy I comeacross (which is pretty much standard practice with me anyway), and collect every objectI find. Yet at the end of that level I'll sometimes check the wafer count andit'll still show up with oneor two wafers as not found, and this after I backtrack through the level. So far this is th only level I've had this happen on. Other than that the game seems to work just fine, particularly now that the ending is back where it belongs.

From David, July 16:Hi all,Yet another release:http://www.GMAGames.com/sod20016.exe The changes and bug fixes are:- The game now completes correctly. For sure this time.- The special teleporter on Level 8 works properly.- The clearer EVA voices are in place.- Control interrupts all three speech types.- When MS Sapi is in use, you can use F10, F11, and F12 to adjust sapi voice, rate, and volume respectively.- New intro by Phil Vlasak.- a dozen or so new and improved sounds.- several small bug fixes. As with all upgrades, whether they be betas or fully tested versions, backup your Shades of Doom 2.0 data folder.  Note that Keystrokes.ini is overwritten in your SOD data folder.  English.txt, found under Shades of Doom  2.0 in the Program Files folder is also overwritten.  If you make changes to this file, you should always keep
a backup since it will be clobbered in every new release. If no major problems are reported, I'll put this version up on the web site tomorrow or the next day. Regards,David Greenwooddavidgreenw...@gmagames.comhttp://www.GMAGames.com

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

A few things:I notice no difference with the sound as compared to the old version; whatever was changed in terms of sounding 3D is something I can't notice.  I can't quote the specific equations off the top of my head, but the entire panning algorithm in both versions feels odd for lack of a better word.  I can't aim manually with it and I used to be pretty good at Swamp.  Perhaps the weapons are too unforgiving or something; nevertheless.I also dislike the new voice greatly.  Bring the old one back-it fit the atmosphere much, much better. And one thing that Shades of Doom needs is navigational info.  Carpet some of the hallways for example.  Name some of the rooms ("office b5", "maintenance corridor"), maybe even add text descriptions.  The environment is empty.  Completely empty.  I'm in a military base, not an oddly square cave system with random fans and coffee machines ("
;you are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike" comes to mind and is really quite accurate).  I should not need the visited keystroke to navigate a military base-there should be enough variety that I can remember I've already been to the missile silo on this level, and [[wow]] I just hit the main corridor again-look at the carpet-or the atrium-say hello to the fountain.  Maybe I'm too critical, but this is my first thought related to content rather than interface when playing Shades of Doom.

Try to follow these instructions:To turn on your SAPI or Screen Reader voice,Play the game and after David says hit f1 for help,do that.Note the default built in voice will be used until you change it.After hitting f1  use up arro to get to optionsThen right arrow to open them, then up arrow two times to get to speech setting. To change it use the space barWhen you have the correct setting hit down arrow to save settings and hit enter. If your computer doesn't allow changing files in c:\program files\Shades of Doom 2.0, the default location,You need to uninstall the game and install it in a safe location,I would try,c:\users\kamochek\downloadsor c:\users\kamocheck\gamesIf the folder doesn't exist, you need to create it.

From David,Hi all,Sod version 2.0.15 is ready for download, but before I put it on the website, I thought it might be good for a few experienced players to give it a try.  Lots of suggestions were included, and it can be played using the built-in voice, your screen reader, or MS Sapi. From Phil:To turn on your SAPI or Screen Reader voice,Play the game and after David says hit f1 for help,do that.Note the default built in voice will be used until you change it.After hitting f1  use up arro to get to optionsThen right arrow to open them, then up arrow two times to get to speech setting. To change it use the space barWhen you have the correct setting hit down arrow to save settings and hit enter.http://www.GMAGames.com/sod20015.exeAs with all betas, backup any SOD data you do not want to lose.  For example, the folder:c:\users\&
lt;your name>\documents\Shades of Doom 2.0should be backed up.  This name varies depending on the version of Windows.  Other possibilities could be:c:\users\\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0orc:\documents and settings\\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0In the program folder there is a file called English.txt.  For those who might be interested in translating the speech text to another language, you may be interested in this file. Of course you will need to set Speech in the options menu to MS Sapi or screen reader to take advantage of any changes. Regards,David Greenwooddavidgreenw...@gmagames.comhttp://www.GMAGames.com

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

From David on 7 July:Hi all,Fixed many of the problems mentioned such as the toilet that doesn't give up its ammo, or even give up its blob, the problem with the crate and several other things.  They were all related.A few people asked to have the monster sounds in the sound help, but this does not seem to be necessary since all you need to do is press Control-M when you encounter a monster and its name is given. From 8 July:What would people think if instead of having a built-in voice, we use your choice of MS Sapi or your screen reader.  In this way I can be sure of having a consistent, easily understood voice, since you have selected it yourself. Also, I can expand Shades of Doom and not worry about matching voice tamber, pitch, and volume.  Voice actors have been suggested, but sometimes you lose track of them, or they might not be interested in continuing when you make changes at a later date.  There is another reason. I
need the speech to be flexible.  For example, to be able to say someone's name, and to eventually translate all the speech to other languages. There is another issue.  What about keyinterrupt?  When Jaws, and maybe other screen readers are speaking, you press any key and it interrupts the current speech.  You can miss important information that way, and you may not even know that you do. This does not happen with MS Sapi.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

I think that SOD is a very pure audio experience, in the sense that there is no ambiguous sound representation, and the game is designed as such for the player to be on fair terms throughout. In other words, SOD emphasises funness over reality. This I think is what people find so charming about it, and I agree. But how this would work in a multiplayer mode, I don't know. From David's notes, it seems he's just as fastidious about that as his single-player mode, and notwithstanding any effect multiplayer would have on the general atmosphere of the game world (which, again, contributes substantially to its charm) it seems likely that the game would be very different to any of the existing FPSs we can play. Now I think about it, I probably haven't thought this through very well, because my idea of multiplayer SOD was essentially that of turning everybody into silent walkers, but realising as I do now that this would actually make for a fairly dull and c
hallenging experience, I can see how David's ideas do make more sense. Although, if it were me, I'd work on removing the limitation on eight players.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Well I've just downloaded and tried the  update, though unfortunately I seem to be running into the same problem Bryan mentioned sinse I don't see options for an upgrade on my account with Gma. Either way, I like the new monster and weapon sounds, however I do agree that they're a bit quiet and don't show distance particularly, sinse I had a monster's volume remain the same when at 30 feet and when close enough to be attacking.that being said, the bolt gun as a laser was cool. The new eva voice I like from a setting perspective, sinse it's less obviously human now and more neutral,  neither male nor female, as an advanced  computer would  be. That being said, some phrases were  rather hard to understand due to the level of distortion on the voice. I will say that the sounds generally are clearer and play  and the game is lovely on my uba sanheisa headphones. So, a mixed bag, but ce
rtainly not all bad, I'll be interested to see how more of the game goes once I have the full version, particularly sinse it has been a few years sinse I last played shades of doom.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

@Bryan, I agree on that, it was shades of doom that actually  convinced me audiogames were worth playing and not just something  simple made for the poor denuded  blindies. As to new versions and money Keba, I for one never said the new version shouldn't happen and david shouldnt' charge, only that I was disappointed with the lack of upgrades as  compared to 1.2. If you've not played the previous version, that doesn't change the fact that shades is  itself a completely awsome game, a fact that nothing can change.  It's an absolute classic everyone who's a fan of audiogames should play at some point, indeed it's Shades very cult status that is likely the reason for the negativity and the hopes for more of it from gamers who already know the original game backwards.@Welshweyer, in terms of monsters, I wouldn't disagree that the current challenge of the game isn't fine, however I do think a great
er variety in monsters   would break things up a little more. For example,  instead of gun wielding mutants as the primary ranged attackers,  how about acid spitting lizards? creatures firing poinoned spines? How about a  giant scorpian style enemy  with weak armour but a medium ranged sting attack. How about some creatures with attacks to slow or effect the player, like say a    mutant plant with grasping tendrils that held the player still while other nasties homed in? How about some floor hazards like pools of acid or molten metal that damaged the player, or some slippery floor tiles that  altered the player's movement speed. All of these would be possible judging by what we've seen in Sarah, and would create more variety and tactics required in the game by changing the situation, also meaning that the player was more frequently presented with new enemies rather than the same old ones, albeit in more challenging positio
ns. @keba, regarding the music, while I agree some more music might have been nice, especially different music for different stages of the game, at the same time I don't like the idea of high action, rock type stuff. Part of what always attracted me to shades  was the horror atmosphere. The fact that the first few times you play the game you don't know when something nasty is going to creep up on you, emphasised by the gorey death  sounds, and the survival horror  theme of the game. While I'd personally like more music, I'd much prefer it to stay within this survival horror theme and not turn the game into a  monster slaughter action fest, sinse after all we have other games for that. The original shades music was quite okay for this imho, however after a while it does become more  monotonous than creepy.

I have to disagree on the music. While the music could definitely see some improvement I really would not want to see rock/electronic because it doesn't fit with the atmosphere. Being alone in a lab full of potentially dangerous things requires more of a drone sound, which is kind of what we have now although the quality is a little disappointing. So something similar but better is something I'd prefer to see. Besides, in real life if you're alone and have no idea what you're facing you probably want something that enables you to hear any unusual activity rather than loud music that allows you to be attacked without even hearing it..

I think I'd have liked maybe another level or 2, or a reworking of the existing ones, because some of the maps are really familiar. There are certain monsters in certain places which it all came flooding back to fight in a certain way. I suppose there are no new monsters after the temporal disturbance so all you get for the last half of the game is just bigger guns facing you. Maybe a new monster later on would be good but I think that the ranged abilities of the monsters at that stage are enough of a challenge for me.I wholeheartedly agree that it would be good to be able to interact with the environment a bit more though. So few of the pieces of ambient equipment do anything and that seems a shame.

y version 2 outright if they never had version 1.2. so from that point of view, this move makes sense, as there is potentially a hole new gaming generation out there, that have never had shades of doom, and want it, specially for newer operating systems.now, on with a couple things beta wise.firstly, i've only played levels 1, and part of level 2 in this new version. how ever, i noticed that there is a problem when going in the elevator, from level 1 to 2. the game freezes up, for quite a while, before unlocking and dropping you suddenly on level 2. and by quite a while, i mean around 20 seconds. now, if i were on a slower computer, this might be expected. however, i am not. i am on a core i7 quad core running at 2.4 ghz, with turbo up to 3.4, and 8 gb of ram. so i don't see why this is happening. but it bares looking into.it appears to go into a not responding state while it's locked up, then resumes normal functionality once it sorts itself out.sounds:i must agree with several people here. i really don't like the new EVA voice. it's to put it bluntly, horrible. please, david, go to a better voice.as is the menu voice. speaking from the experience of knowing a couple people with hearing problems, the new voices are horrible, and hard to hear. even for me, at nearly perfect hearing levels still.I also, noticed the monster sounds are kinda quiet, and there seems to be very little difference in volume, from being 50 feet away, and 0 feet away. it's hard to tell if the monster is a long way away from me, or about to beat my brains in.as is the sounds for objects to pick up. they also seem to be a bit hard to tell distance with.music:now this is where it's lagging. yeah, it brings back memories of version 1.2, but really, we need newer music, at better quality, and a totally different sound. we need music that gets your blood pumping, and ready to take on the world.
not this boring kind of droning sound. this is one area we could see a lot of improvement. either some kind of trance like, electronic like music, or some rock of some type.looking forward to see what else comes to this new version. hopefully, we haven't seen everything yet.dallas

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Interesting about the multiplayer. I confess multiplayer is less my thing sinse I tend to prefer exploring and single player plot than competing against others, for all I'd probably give it a try, btw, this is why i liked swamp sinse it was possible to effectively play as a single player game.  I actually also agree with Arjan that Gma tank commander would probably work more effectively in terms of setting as a multiplayer game, sinse I did always like the  impression of being one  lone surviver stuck in a very dark and hostile place shades  gave, which would not be the same in  a frantic,  multiplayer melee, then again i freely admit I'm more a single player sort of bod  anyway. The  major things i was hoping for in the update were more plot sequences and objects to play with, sinse some of those levels are pretty empty (especially compared to Sarah), and more variety in enemies, sinse I always found myself getting a bit tir
ed of seeing the same mutants and cyborgs again by level 5 or 6 so, extra  background ambience and a  bit of variety in setting would've been nice too. Actual extra levels, or some sort of map designer might have been fun, though I was not entirely holding out for this. Regarding buying the upgrade, as I said though i do feel disappointed I'm personally happy to support Gma  to the tune of 5 usd, especially because more is obviously on the way, and I look forward to  hearing the new sounds. I would also be a little concerned that if too many people didn't   show an interest in the upgrade we may not see  more work on Shades in the future. That being said I may contact David once I have bought he upgrade and express some of these concerns. However, as Arjan said perhaps it's now time to move on.

I agree that Tank Commander would work far better online than SOD. Then again, I rarely enjoy competative online games since I have very little time to play them and usually get owned by people who do nothing else but get extremely good and then don't stop telling you how much you suck.On another point, is it worth paying for the current version of the game or waiting until the beta is completely worked? I'm not getting errors so far in the version I've downloaded but I'd rather have the most up-to-date and best-worked code.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Interesting, I always expected Tank Commander to be the next multiplayer game if any such game were to be developed. Making Shades multiplayer doesn't seem to fit with the nature of the game as well, although it looks like it'll be an entirely different game. And I will admit that these feelings are entirely personal, I definitely would very much consider paying for a multi-player version.I think the disappointment is justified but that now we should just all move on. Besides, Robjoy explained it better than I probably ever could, also fair points about VB6 and such being highly out of date. So we probably should stop repeating ourselves and wait until someone can bring something new to the table.

Hello.I agree, this update is very disappointing. What exactly were the issues in Windows 7?I used to have Windows 7 and the game worked just fine, aside from some audio cutout when transitioning to levels.I will not be paying for this update. If some features do come to SOD in the future, I wouldn't mind paying for it at all. Here are some of the things that could be cool to have in SOD.The multiplayer mode would be awesome!I would love to get online and fight my friends or just random people. The ability to create your own custom maps and enemies would be really cool. This is why I love Adventure at C:.It allows you to create new levels and basically be able to do what ever you want which adds to the game.I would love to be able to create my own map with rooms and hallways and custom enemies and such.I think Shades of Doom has potential though, I really do.

To add to your point dark, the 1.2 update was for free if I remember right. Add to that, it is also in public beta. So far, based on what we got, I agree. the price does seem high. The only things werth noting seems to be the audio and the mouse support and the fixing of bugs on the back end. On the other hand, I'm not questioning the rather or not david should get paid for his work on the intertainment that he provides us via his games. Is it fair to say that part of the problem is in marketing? Just wondering. Based on what we saw in the past, I can for sure see why we all would expect more, but david made no promises in public, as far as I can remember, when it comes to features set. Yes it is disappointing to get what we got in this version. Is $5 enough to take a game such as SOD from XP to seven while leaving everything else about the game in tacked? From reading this topic, the answer is no. It could be summed up by saying that 2.0 is a remake or am I wrong? What exzac
kly were people wanting? More story line. More weapons? From I can tell by reading this topic, it would be more story or plot. I wonder, is it to late for David to add more plot? Other then bug fixes, is it set in stone? I would hate for all the complaining on here to end in a buntch of upset little... It is amazing at times on how devided or alike we seem to be at times... Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Hi Folks,For those with long memories, David Greenwood held a workshop on the upcoming changes to Shades of Doom Multi-User. Place: VIPConduit.comDate: Tuesday, January 4, 2010.He described his ideas for a Shades of Doom Multi-User version, in a message dated September 14, 2009. How it will work. There will never be more than eight people per game.  There could be many games in progress at the same time though.  You would pick the monster you want to be.  Other than the name and voice, everyone's powers and health are the same.  The world will be larger than a level.  If a level is 20 by 20, the world my be 50 by 50. In other words, over six times the size.  There may be options to control the game such as:1.  You can control what happens when you die. One method is that you battle until only one person is left. alternatively. When you die, you loose some poi
nts and are brought back to a point in the game away from others,2. There is a team option.  Say mutant humans versus mutant dogs. Alternatively, you play on your own.3.  There may be objectives, say capture an object and bring it back to your home to win. Alternatively,  you could choose to play just a shoot 'em up.You would find or kill computer controlled creatures to obtain better weapons and special devices such as a portable teleporter. Depending on the options, you may have a home base. There would need to be a small cost per month.  This is to cover the server, data rates, and the amount of work and ongoing maintenance of the world. Please don't ask when it will be ready.  Writing a multi-user game is difficult and time consuming and requires quite a few things to be in place first.Since then, he wrote that the multi-player features would be worked on in T
ime of Conflict first before SOD.He also stated that he would have to devise an on-line registration system before doing multi-player versions of SOD and Tank Commander and possibly Lone Wolf. With SOD 2.0 including his MyAccount.exe on-line registration system, he is getting closer to the multi-user version of Shades of Doom. I would be hoping for this to eventually come about as my  Sarah and the Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry game uses the GMA game engine andI would love to develop a multi-user version.

Exodus that's because the mainstream gaming industry has hundreds if not thousands of big name companies with billions of dollars to thheir names, so gamers can afford to get pissy. We onte other hand have a much smaller number of developers, usually one to two-man operations, to choose from. I agree I might have hoped to see more substantial changes between Shades 1.2 and 2.0, especially considering the changes between 1.0 and 1.2 but so far I like the changes for 2.0, especially the removal of that annoying, squeaky EVA voice. Needless to say if I can ever figure out how to upgrade and get the upgrade price I will be buying it to support David.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Cw, I will say at least  on my part there were  quite good reasons I expected major changes in Shades version 2.0. firstly, were the changes  between 1.0 and 1.2, (actually 1.2 came out about a week after I bought the game). These included several new weapons and  teweked behaviour in older weapons, some level tweaks to make life easier (for example the ability to know how many  wafers were left to pick up on a level), a learn game sounds menu, and an entirely   redesigned level 9.I also believe some of the other levels got some  miner alterations, though i am not absolutely certain on this one. The second reason I was expecting major changes was the difference between Toc 1.0 and 2.0. Toc 2.0 is almost an entirely different game! the basic second world war style stratogy game got several new unit  types, from static artilliary to engineers as well as changes in the balance of current units such as fighters, and the
mechanics changed with the differences in  turns being taken over time (I confess that one is still confusing me but that's another matter). In addition the game  got online play capability, and  what is effectively two extra  varients on the same stratogy game, the   medieval stratogy map and the startrek stratogy map, either of which could have potentially been commercial games in and of themselves. And of course there is the ability to create more maps, settings and unit types in the future. Given  these major changes, I do think a little degree of disappointment is reasonable, for all I don't think the changes in Shades 2.0 aren't worth 5 usd (whether they're worth ten could be another matter, but pricing is a very subjective process).

Any I did some sourching on the forems. What I was trying to figure out is where the hipe came from. Clearly if you were looking for more then better audio and mouse support on the front end, then the price is to much. The argument could be made that we should put our money where our mouth is and not buy until it has the features it we want. Of cource that can have a some kind of an affect. For example, the game may no longer be worked on beyond this point. Of cource the price may drop, or feature may be added. Are these the only things that may happon. LOL. No. I guess I'm getting tired of the complaints, not that they are not valid or anything. I guess I should also stop reading this topic. LOL. Anyway, here here here and here are some topics I found. Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Well I'm coming to this one a little late, and I do confess I've not read all 50 odd posts. I also confess I'm waiting until I get back to my desktop at my flat tomorrow before I buy the upgrade, although buy it I will if nothing else to support Gma. On  upgrading vs new features, Generally I agree with welshweyr, though obviously I'll need to hear the improved sounds for myself before making up my mind (actually sinse I recently bought some  more uba sanheisa headphones I'm quite looking  forward to it). On the one hand,    yes I was  expecting an upgrade similar in scope to Toc 2.0, with new levels, monsters, maybe a level editer etc and I confess I am a trifle disappointed that but for some new sounds and mouse control I'm not getting much in the upgrade. On the other hand, this was entirely my own expectation, not born out by anything David  said, and David is notoriously closed on his develo
pment plans (and iif I may say so the negativity of some members of the community possibly justifies that). In  software terms version numbers are only an indicator.  For example  the upgrade from supernova 13-4.5 to supernova 13-5.0 wasn't half as big a leap in terms of noticeable user effects as the upgrade from 13-5.1 to 13-5.3, as the changes between the 4 and 5 series while major enough to warrent a  more complete  number change were not noticeable to the user. I think often with games it is possible to conffuse a new version with an actual sequel. This is why in the Smugglers series when the changelog for smugglers 4.5 became so extensive it completely reworked the game we got Smugglers 5 instead.  Maybe we all wanted to see Shades of Doom 2,when in effect what we've got is shades of doom version 2.0. Should david charge for the game? Well on the basis that he probably had to go and collect or reccord new sounds and
spent a lot of time on the coding of it, probably yes. On the basis that he hasn't given us the bags of new features we wanted, possibly not. The half way house here seems to be charging a minimal upgrade fee, which with his 5 usd upgrade offer is in effect what David has done. I do think he could've  asked more than he did for the Toc upgrade given the extensive number of new features in the game, indeed though there was a similar 5 usd starter offer for Toc I paid the full 10 usd for the upgrade, though this time for Shades 2.0 I will buy it at the 5 usd price. So, yes, disappointing, but probably not worth the negativity. I will also remind people that one of the other purposes of Shades of doom 2.0 was working out the Gma engine. This is not only news for Phil and the Sarah upgrade, but also for any future titles from Gma games, and with David's propensity for staying quiet about developments I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Shades of do
om 2,  or some other entirely new title with the Gma engine were around the corner, heck, sinse this is a beta version it's also possible we'll see more additions to the game later and we'll all have to eat our words .

I do think he could've  asked more than he did for the Toc upgrade given the extensive number of new features in the game. So, yes, disappointing, but probably not worth the negativity. I will also remind people that one of the other purposes of Shades of doom 2.0 was working out the Gma engine. This is not only news for Phil and the Sarah upgrade, but also for any future titles from Gma games, and with David's propensity for staying quiet about developments I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Shades of doom 2,  or some other entirely new title with the Gma engine were around the corner.

Entirely off-topic here, but the idea of security questions is to set up questions for which you will not forget the answers. If you've forgotten your security question answers, you probably didn't choose good security questions. Now I can see situations where you have to choose something like, "What is the name of your favorite pet?" and years down the road, you have to try to remember when you set up that question, so you can know how to answer. On the other hand, questions such as, "What was the last name of your first grade teacher?" don't suffer from this problem, as that answer will never change. Not withstanding some form of time travel, whoever was your first grade teacher was always, is now, and will forever be the correct person.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

I've tried the demo now. I think most of the sounds are an improvement, although I don't think it has quite the same mysterious atmosphere as before. I wonder what the laser pistol will sound like since the bolt guns already sound like laser guns now. The monster sounds are interesting: they do sound more like mutants than zombies now, which is good but a little confusing. The monster sounds seemed quite quiet though, compared to the other sounds. I've not checked the options menu though to see if I can reduce some sounds to balance them out for my personal preference.I'll definitely pay to upgrade. I don't actually think there's a problem with the price, or the fact that it is chargeable. In all fairness, we had no hints from GMA that there would be new content so it's only our own expectations that are suffering. I will definitely agree that the programming changes are not to be disregarded and that the bug fixes are only to be applauded
. Cost aside, TOC did perhaps give some false expectations of what SOD 2.0 would include and David does keep his cards close to his chest so nothing was done to disabuse the community.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Hi.David could have done a simular thing than companies are doing in the mainstream market.Make a Shades of Doom: Remake, and sold it as a new game for a pretty cheep price. a remake is an old game which has been remade to work on newer systems. For exampel, many old clasics on the playstation 1 and 2 are being remade and soled on the playstation network for a cheep price, so people can play their old favorits again. If David has done the same thing, people wouldn't have been dissapointed at all. Calling a game version 2.0 usually make people to think new features, new levels, new enemies etc. But if a game is a remake, people new from the very beginning that the game is only remade to work on newer systems so people could continue to play their favorit game.Phil: I think most people agree here when i say it would be very much worth it if you charge money for the Sarah upgrade. Why? because there will be many, many new things. So if you take money for
all the hard work you have don, people will get a lot for their money. Just my opinion.

As for the price, it's ok, but not great from my point of view when it come to being in beta, but it depends on how bad people wants the upgrade. HiI didn't buy the update yet, but I at least sent a key replacement so my SOD 1.2 shows up in my account; So far, so good. A few things that were a bit annoying me:- The mouse support seems a bit slow. Is it either me or does the game update slowely when playing the mouse. - Monster sounds should be kind of included in the sounds menu. The sounds did improve, but since they are new, it was rather tricky to recognise them.- The EVA voice (personal thing probably) is worse than the older one.- Object sounds didn't play always, and doors only showed up at the last instant I was near them- Music: well new tracks would be nice since the old one sounds, well, old.As for the beta in general: the feature set sems indeed on the "small" side of things. I think bug fixes for the engine are indeed something valueable, and I'm sure they will benefit GTC and Sarah as well. A few more levels, more enimies, or something t
hat changes once you start a second game cycle (teleporter) would be kind of neat. Think I'm off for now, time for me to get some sleep ...

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Well as a user of the game, I decided to go ahead and buy it.The upgrade price for what I got was a little disappointing though the engine rework seemed to be ok 3d sound though is nonexistant sadly which is a bit of a bummer. Its like it used to be in xp with stereo and at least my realtech card doesn't have issues with stuff. Now to the bad news.I brought the game but apparently the upgrade price was the full price, since I have registered all the 1x games gtc sod and lonewolf on this box there is no way to send the ordering wizard or run it or anything on this system and it seems counterproductive to send another key code with the games installed on another system to register them. After the website thinks you have ordered it the game disappears from your order page and as far as I can see there is no way to get it back again. So I followed the upgrade commands to upgrade and at least get the price.Fine I thought.the net decided
to crash. And I never was able to get back to complete the order.there is no resume order function either.I decided to get a key replacement for sod 1.2 since that game  was still avalible.I did and low the game disappeared like sod 2 did. Then the game said it was registered and I could play it.This is really messy, games should not disappear no matter what the site thinks you have done.there should be some way to resume orders especially if you have not payed or an email with the link.I can't even find the sounds where to put the sounds for the locutis mod 2.0 back. The engine is sertainly an improvement, levels, well I guess I would like a few more. There are still some major bugs.1.  a lot of messages in almost all levels except 3 7 and 8 and 1 were never around at all.One time I played through level1 I had no ammo at all! no items for amo appeared at all.Worse was to follow, monsters bunche
d up at points in the level and some items appear all at once or not at all.I even had a situation I think level3 it was where security chips appeared behind locked doors. The blob is to strong in my opinion or to fast. And all monsters are outside their toilets/crates.If that's the case there is no point having a crate or toilet if everything ie monsters and some items are outside it, the only time this was not the case was level2.Is the game worth the upgrade. If you have had the game before the engine is good.and if you have had the game on xp before and want to continue playing it then it is worth upgrading a must have and 9 bucks is not that bad for an upgrade. On the other side though for those getting into the game and don't mind the weird brokenness of 1.2 I prefur the wind sounds and some other fx in that version. The item distribution bar the ocational message was ok but that's neither here or there.I kn
ow a lot of work has been done on the engine and it shows. However I would have prefured sounds from the updated 2.0 mod be used rather than the 1.0 version of the mod, never liked that soundpack as much. One feature I would dearly like is ways to make more levels enemies, mods, maybe other weapons, ofcause I know the engine has limitations for that but time of conflict allows for some odding so its possible.Even if you couldn't have more levels, having different mods to play the same levels in well who knows.Clearly there is still a lot to do, due to the replacement issues I had I sent my key manually via email cutting and pasting info from an old data file for a system I had previously. For now the game is fully working, and I'll keep it for as long as it does work.if its straightened out and I get all the issues I put up lastnight resolved I'll pay for the order and that will be the end of it.The only reason to upgrade is the
os upgrade thing as xp is no more now.I do like the  transporter sound and the fact at sertain points sound does drop in volume at sertain intervils however I don't care for the eva voice.I have never used the mouse just keyboard.Another small issue I have is the fact that if I kill say a monster like a temperal disterbence, and then die or if I kill a monster and load a saved game before I kill it it will not appear.either that or some random generic human will appear in a room I cleared before.or an item randomly.or nothing at all.For what it is I have always liked sod even though its not extended though I wish it was as it was one of my first games like lonewolf and gtc.I'd gladly pay for upgrades.Time of conflict has never interested me to the point where I'd buy it.The featureset is quite small as an upgrade but this new engine has been a long time coming, and I guess we should be thankfull about th
e new engine coming at all even though there is little to show for it.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

Hi,@Sebby, the problem here is that there is a price for something that should have been in existence for years. Whatever the price is, you have to agree that paying for something that does not add any significant feature to the game is really not worth it. Maybe it is just me, but if I pay for a product, I expect free maintenance and support. Paying extra for additional content, or more features is perfectly understandable, but let's be honest: there aren't that many features here that anyone would pay for. This does not mean that David's work is trivial, or nullified. He certainly spent who knows how much time on updating the engine, and adding what we have in SoD 2.0. But yet again, paying for something that does not add any visible, or significant change seems just wrong to me.As a game developer, it is my responsibility to have a maintained and supported product, especially if it is a paid one. If I add content or anything else that adds more value
to the game, paying for it is fine. I spent lots of time coding it, after all. But it is not the gamers' fault that I used technologies that are no longer supported. It is not fair, because I will have to spend time and energy on ensuring that it is up to date, but that does not mean that the gamers' will have to pay for it.If nothing else, at least make a sequel, or redesign the levels, something that would make the gamers feel that it is a slightly different game.Maybe I am alone in thinking this, I don't know. I certainly would not choose this path.Rob

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

I think a lot of people replying have made themselves pretty clear. My essential point is that I object to the trivialisation or nullification of work that David Greenwood has done to bring SOD up to date. No, I don't agree that $10 is too much. I don't own Time of Conflict but I would argue that both the nature of the output and the fact of its having been released more recently make a non-chargeable upgrade much more reasonable. And despite any expectation that people might have, GMA are not obliged to provide a free upgrade simply because people feel that they should get one--even for maintenance patches that would enable games to run on newer operating systems, which I believe is pretty clearly what users have been asking for. It really is the difference between saying, "This release doesn't justify the version number and really ought to have more in it" and "This release does not justify $10". Put it another way: are you going to grudge GMA
$10, when the alternative is no update at all? I am not. I agree that given the other available FPSs on what we might call a market, all of them free, there's a pretty clear path for David to take with SOD, and I wonder why he doesn't. But I also respect SOD for what it is, what it was, and intend to support its continued development. And no, I don't believe GMA is using SOD players to subsidise engine development, any more than for his other titles; I think he simply realised that there were costs, and passed them on, and probably realises as well as we do that selling an engine upgrade exclusively for cost would be infeasible. The only grace is that you have every right to complain when the product you actually purchased isn't living up to expectations. Myself, I'd like to see online play in SOD, whenever such a thing is possible, but it's not like I don't have other choices right now.

As I am running systems with Windows 7 and Windows 8 the bug fixes and the new more modern audio support alone makes it well worth the $5 for upgrading. So for me it isn't a question of upgrading or not upgrading as I do need the better audio support. That said, like others I am a bit disappointed that there isn't more to this beta than essentially better audio, and mouse support. I have just played through level 1, and while I like the beta well enough I too would like a few new extra levels, perhaps some unlockable or bonus content, and perhaps a couple of new enemies somewhere in the game. However, I won't complain too much about it as I am sure David Greenwood can add those features at any time if he chooses, and this update is a decent upgrade even if it doesn't come with everything I had hoped for.Phil, I have Shades of Doom 2.0 running side by side with version 1.
2 so that is not a problem. Just make sure to install them in different program directories which the games will do by default anyway.

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

I'm going to reserve judgment until I've tried the game but I am disappointed that the change log isn't fuller. I agree that there are bound to have been plenty of technical changes behind the scenes which wouldn't make sense to me since I don't know anything about programming. No new monsters, levels, weapons, equipment or environments at all is really quite disappointing though. I'll almost certainly pay for this since I do really like David's games and I'm looking forward to using the mouse for a more mainstream feel.I certainly agree that it seems like Time of Conflict gave much more. There was so much good new stuff in it!

Re: Shades of Doom Version 2.0 Public Beta Released

I don't really understand the meaning behind the argument that you can use 1.2 as well as 2.0 on the same machine, although it's possible I'm misinterpreting that statement. Of course it's possible to use version 1.2 to retain your modding abilities, but to me that would be just another reason why people are not going to upgrade to version 2.0. Knowing this makes me even less likely to get the newest version because, frankly, the removal of the ability to increase replay value in exchange for mouse support and a few behind the scenes things is a setback to me.On another note, the people getting the regional settings-based error need to be a little more patient. This is a beta, which means it's going to have issues. And while this is a fairly big issue that probably also means it should hopefully be fixed soon.

Burak,About international computers crashing the game, David just posted:Thanks.  That should help.  It has something to do with the regional settings since when I switched these I could duplicate your error.  That is 90% of the way to fixing it.Regards,David GreenwoodI know he fixed this same bug in version 1.2 but he might have added new features that have the same bug.I think a temporary fix would be to swich your Windows to US settings and a US keybord.Or wait until David fixes the bug.
