[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk
Around 11 this morning, I watched a Rough-legged Hawk circling over the fields along Mt Pleasant Road, before making its way slowly westward toward the observatory. Hope it sticks around...it's been a number of years since this species spent the winter on Mt Pleasant. Also, yesterday around the same time, I glimpsed what I presume was the Common Redpoll flock foraging far on the south side of the Mt Pleasant weedy field (south side of the road) Marie Marie Read Wildlife Photography 452 Ringwood Road Freeville NY 13068 USA e-mail m...@cornell.edu Website: http://www.marieread.com NEW! [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk, Snow Buntings
Hi all, On my walk up Mt Pleasant Road around 3:00 this afternoon, I saw the following: Rough-legged Hawk, the first of the season, flying near the observatory. At one point it landed on the snowy ground, scaring up a flock of 11 Snow Buntings. Later I watched as the hawk swooped along low to the ground and then snatched up a small, dark creature, presumably some rodent. Since mid-morning, there have been impressive numbers of Canada Geese and American Crows in the recently mowed (post harvesting) corn fields at the east end of Mt Pleasant Rd, likely because the strong winds of the last few days have prevented deep snow build-up, so there is bare ground with corn cobs or other potential foods visible. In one patch I saw 6 Horned Larks. Also a Downy Woodpecker on the ground checking out corn cobs and stems. [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk
Around 11:30 this morning, I found a Rough-legged Hawk hovering over the fields just east of the Mt Pleasant Observatory. I watched it for about 15 minutes, hoping it would come back into photo range, but it slowly made its way south, circling and hovering as it went, until it was out of sight. Hopefully there will be others up here this winter. [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk
After being absent for most of the winter, there was a Rough-legged Hawk hovering over the fields at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Road around 6:00 this evening when I drove by. I've had only one other sighting of this species up here this year. [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk
Mt Pleasant's first Rough-legged Hawk of the winter put in an appearance just in time to be included in yesterday's Christmas Bird Count, and today was hovering in the wind around 9:15 am when I drove past.
