Mailuefterl Emulator in JavaScript

2017-07-09 Thread Norbert Kehrer via cctalk
The Mailuefterl (German for "may breeze", an allusion to much bigger US
computers like "Whirlwind" or "Typhoon") was the first fully
transistorized computer in (continental) Europe. It was built at the
Technical University of Vienna (Austria) from 1955 to 1958 by Dr. Heinz
Zemanek and his team. Now the machine does not work any more and can be
seen at the technical museum in Vienna.

In 2007 I wrote an emulator for this pioneering machine as a Java
applet, and now ported it to JavaScript to make it usable again in
modern browsers.

You can try this historical computer as an emulation in your browser at
my site at http://members.aon.at/nkehrer

It contains some original and self-written code snippets to play around
with, and I also shortly described the instruction set of this old machine.

Best regards

Norbert

The silly thing is that a $15 MCU with a SD card can probably handle a
Pertec interface with horsepower to spare. You could mount an MCU
inside the drive cabinet and use it with a USB or ethernet cable--or
WiFi, if you're ambitious enough for control. Most of the job is 5V
level shifting.

Such is the world we live in today--silicon is stupid cheap.

Anyone need any blank tapes? I've got a dozen or so still in their
sealed bags--probably sticky as heck, since they were recycled/refurbed,
then sold. I suspect that they're probably 80's Memorex--not exactly
good news. I'm sure as heck not going to use them.

Maybe for a wall decoration?

I streamed them without a problem on TX-8 ISA (16 bit card as you

The TC-PC interface could be wirewrapped (we built up 3 examples) and
ran on just the PC

8 bit bus, and would only handle 12.5ips formatted Pertec (7840 maybe).

But the 16 bit AT bus was plenty fast if you had a 386 or 486 running.
Certainly the software that
ODI supplies streams. YMMV if you play games with the records with the

I think I have the means to make a Linux box with the TXI attached and
it runs full speed.

I need to build up a bigger system to hold the full sized PCI cards

You're right--the card, as much as I can see of it, matches a TX-8. I

TC-PC, TX-8, and TC-I. The latter is a PCI board. This is probably a TX-8.

I have controller and cable sets available for all of them. There are
linux drivers for some version of the kernel for the TX-I The rest of
the software runs on windows, and is good to copy and image tapes.

Anyone who would like a loan or can use any of mine, speak up, and I'll
let you borrow or acquire them.

I've also got a stack of F-880's and an F-990 if any of that helps anyone.

I did at one time have a Pertec NRZI and a PE formatter which would run
the Pertec 37.5ips tapes, but I am not sure where they went. The former
would run 556 and 800bpi the latter 1600. I will have to see if they
survived and share them if I find them.\

The ODI controllers can run off the P1-P2 formatted Pertec interface off
of them quite nicely.

Ahh yes. I'm going to guess cg3 (basic 8 bit framebuffer) from that angle :)

Looks like Sun 13W3 to VGA adaptors are around £20 inc shipping from the
states, though obviously suns are very nice on serial console if you don't
have the space for random monitors.

Wow, they really have gone up (just looked at eBay). Other options include
a 50pin to modern SCSI adaptor or even something like

Of course Sun's work really well netbooted if you have some other random
box to provide rarp, dhcp & nfs (add in bootparams for older OSs). A very
long time ago I was running a public access cluster and happened to be on a
different continent for a couple of years. Some of the suns had rather
dodgy disks which would crap out and need a reformat to get back. It was
quite nice to be able to netboot, then run a script to reformat, install
and reboot back into service from nine timezones away :)
