Bug#386778: GNOME in etch doesn't know what etch is
Package: gnome-control-center Version: 1:2.14.2-2 Severity: serious Every time I use the 'Configure Network Settings' or 'Adjust Date & Time' menu options from the applets in my GNOME panel, I am given a dialog that says: The platform you are running is not supported by this tool If you know for sure that it works like one of the platforms listed below, you can select that and continue. Note, however, that this might damage the system configuration or downright cripple your computer. So I have to ask, are any of the GNOME team actually *using* control-center in etch? I can't imagine that any maintainer would consider it ok for this dialog to pop up when a user tries to access configuration functions on their etch desktop. Please fix this so that the Debian packages know what OS they're running on. :/ Marked as sev: serious, because this is a significant lack of polish which IMHO makes the package unfit for release. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.14-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages gnome-control-center depends on: ii capplets-data 1:2.14.2-2configuration applets for GNOME 2 ii desktop-file-utils 0.11-1Utilities for .desktop files ii gnome-desktop-data 2.14.3-1 Common files for GNOME 2 desktop a ii gnome-icon-theme 2.14.2-2 GNOME Desktop icon theme ii gnome-menus2.14.3-1 an implementation of the freedeskt ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-01.12.1-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libaudiofile0 0.2.6-6 Open-source version of SGI's audio ii libavahi-client3 0.6.12-1 Avahi client library ii libavahi-common3 0.6.12-1 Avahi common library ii libavahi-glib1 0.6.12-1 Avahi glib integration library ii libbonobo2-0 2.14.0-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.14.0-4 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.2.4-1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-1-20.62-4simple interprocess messaging syst ii libebook1.2-5 1.6.3-1 Client library for evolution addre ii libesd00.2.36-3 Enlightened Sound Daemon - Shared ii libfontconfig1 2.3.2-7 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.2.1-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgconf2-42.14.0-4 GNOME configuration database syste ii libgcrypt111.2.2-3 LGPL Crypto library - runtime libr ii libglade2-01:2.6.0-2 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.10.3-3 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-desktop-2 2.14.3-1 Utility library for loading .deskt ii libgnome-keyring0 0.4.9-1 GNOME keyring services library ii libgnome-menu2 2.14.3-1 an implementation of the freedeskt ii libgnome-window-settings1 1:2.14.2-2Utility library for getting window ii libgnome2-02.14.1-3 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.14.0-2 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeui-0 2.14.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 2.14.2-1 GNOME virtual file-system (runtime ii libgnutls131.4.2-1 the GNU TLS library - runtime libr ii libgpg-error0 1.2-1 library for common error values an ii libgstreamer-plugins-base0 0.10.9-2 GStreamer libraries from the "base ii libgstreamer0.10-0 0.10.9-1 Core GStreamer libraries and eleme ii libgtk2.0-02.8.20-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice61:1.0.0-3 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libjpeg62 6b-13 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libmetacity0 1:2.14.5-1library of lightweight GTK2 based ii libnautilus-extension1 2.14.3-1 libraries for nautilus components ii liborbit2 1:2.14.0-2libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.12.3-2 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-5.2 PNG library - runtime ii libpopt0 1.10-3lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libsm6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 Session Management library ii libstartup-notification0 0.8-1 library for program launch feedbac ii libtasn1-3 0.3.5-2 Manage

Bug#386777: RFP: afuse -- automounting file system implemented in user-space using FUSE
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: afuse Version : 0.1.1 Upstream Author : Jacob Bower <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * URL : http://afuse.sourceforge.net/ * License : GPL Programming Lang: C Description : automounting file system implemented in user-space using FUSE Afuse is an automounting file system implemented in user-space using FUSE. Afuse currently implements the most basic functionality that can be expected by an automounter; that is it manages a directory of virtual directories. If one of these virtual directories is accessed and is not already automounted, afuse will attempt to mount a filesystem onto that directory. If the mount succeeds the requested access proceeds as normal, otherwise it will fail with an error. See the example below for a specific usage scenario. The advantage of using afuse over traditional automounters is that afuse is designed to run entirely in user-space by individual users. This way an automounting action can take advantage of the invoking users environment, for example allowing access to an ssh-agent for password-less sshfs mounts, or allowing access to a graphical environment to get user input to complete a mount (i.e. popping up a window asking for a password). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#386775: libpam-chroot: Documentation should say that notfound and onerr options are equivalent
Package: libpam-chroot Severity: normal Hi, when reading /usr/share/doc/libpam-chroot/options, I scratched my head wondering what the actual, unmentioned, difference between "notfound" and "onerr" is. A look at the source revealed that there indeed is no difference whatsoever, which I think should be mentioned in the documentation. Also, I think the current text is rather vague if not misleading. These options are not about whether or not the chroot dir "can be determined" but rather about whether or not a chroot dir is specified in the config. Particularly given the option name "onerr", one might be mislead to think that it also applies if the file could not be read for whatever reason - after all, in this case the chroot dir could not be determined, either. I'd suggest the following text: | notfound=(success|failure) and | onerr=(succeed|fail) - These two options have the exactly same effect (and | override each other), so you probably want to specify only one of | them. They specify what to return in the case that no chroot | directory is specified for the current user in the chroot.conf. | "success" or "succeed", respectively, cause PAM_SUCCESS to be | returned, while "failure" or "fail" cause PAM_SESSION_ERR to be | returned. The default is to return PAM_SUCCESS. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.16.1 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=de_DE (charmap=ISO-8859-1) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#242940: vlc: manpage ...
Is this bug still valid? The man page suggests vlc --longhelp --advanced for a list of switches, and you can't ask too much more than that from a man page, if the main documentation is in a different format. That list of switches includes UCP and HTTP output. Having only used VLC as a player, I can't comment on how useful the resources available without a network connection are for doing anything other than playing local files. Maybe the man page should say which docs are obsolete, and which docs users should be looking at. I know that man pages are always the first form of online doc I turn to, so it seems like a good place to point users to other resources in videolan-doc, or whatever. -- #define X(x,y) x##y Peter Cordes ; e-mail: X([EMAIL PROTECTED] , des.ca) "The gods confound the man who first found out how to distinguish the hours! See: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-cups-manager/+bug/44196 In #44196, it looks like gnome-cups-icon gets into an infinite loop trying to read from a CUPS ipp connection that has been closed. On my Ubuntu system, this is triggered (sometimes, not always) when cupsd restarts, which seems to be an anacron daily event. I'm too much of a newbie to figure this out myself. =-=-= Bill Statler =-=-= -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#355764: DVD-R / DVD-RW burning with growisofs
Hi, I am on Linux 2.6.17-2-686 with: ii dvd+rw-tools 6.1-3 DVD+-RW/R tools ii wodim 1.0~pre4-1 command line CD writing tool I found interesting things on the DVD burning problem with DVD-R / DVD-RW. Summary; 1. DVD-R writing and DVD-RW sequential writing share code and they both fail to write DVD media. 2. dvd+rw-mediainfo seem to return correct information just after writing without reloading DVD. But report broken disk with no data. 3. DVD-RW restricted overwrite seems to work always no problem. 4. Disabling DMA have no effect on failed burn in "1.". I suffer DVD-R writing issues on wodim too. So this may be kernel issue. If so, both dvd+rw-tools and cdrkit needs to have some pointer documentation. (I did not use ide-scsi module on this test. I have not tested on old 2.4 kernel with ide-scsi method. At least, both growisofs and dvd-patched local cdrecoed package used to work on my machne.) Since the instructions its oopsing on are fairly generic (sys_ioctl and exit_sighand), I'm guessing apcupsd is somehow managing to cause the oops... However, a kernel oops is always a kernel bug. Given that apcupsd doesn't contain any kernel modules, I'm reassigning this to the corresponding kernel package. I'm also lowering the severity, since from the kernel POV this bug doesn't make the kernel unusable, it just makes it impossible to use apcupsd with this kernel. will forward this bug to apcupsd mantainer, maybe they have some clue about it . The motherboard vendor provides an alsa driver for the sound "card" for download, which I will try next. The instructions that come with it call for kernel re-compilation... There are two printers attached, a NEC Silentwriter 95f via parallel port and a Canon BJC-3000 via USB. I could get both of them to work on the debian machine, but I also wanted to use this machine as a print server for a bunch of connected Windows XP machines (which it is when booted under Windows XP). However, this still does not work. Hope this was helpful.Ekkehard

Bug#386758: uw-mailutils: mailutil documentation is incomplete
Package: uw-mailutils Version: 7:2002edebian1-13 Severity: minor The mailutil man page says, in the Arguments section The arguments are standard c-client mailbox names. A variety of mailbox name formats and types of mailboxes are supported by c-client; examples of the most common forms of names are: and later See your system manager for more information about the types of mailboxes which are available on your system. This poses two challenges. First, there is no obvious place to discover what "the standard c-client mailbox names" are, and I don't think this binary package (uw-mailutils) has that information anywhere. This meant, for example, when I saw references to /ssl in the FAQ I didn't even know where it went. I was interested only in mailutils, not the full server (I use cyrus, and the docs specifically recommend using the UW tools for migration). Second, the person who installs this package (that's the "system manager") is not in a good position to know which types are available. Only the packagers know this. Marc Crispin referred me to the file naming.txt in the docs directory of the source for more info, with naming.txt and drivers.txt of possible secondary interest. naming.txt had the information I was looking for. He also said the man page can't be more specific because the precise options available depend on how the program was compiled. I can imagine at least two solutions to this problem. The minimalist one would be to include the relevant source docs files in /usr/share/doc/uw-mailutils/, and have README.Debian alert the user to their existence and to which options are supported in the Debian package (and/or which other facilities are needed for the different options to work). The maximalist approach would be to fold the necessary information into the man page (or maybe some other man page on c-client information). Ideally this would go upstream, though upstream seems a bit reluctant. I think it's both more typical and more desirable to document all the options, and note that some of them may not work. This way, material could be customized to the local system by simple deletion (it could even be done by clever config magic, I imagine). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (990, 'stable'), (50, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-686-smp Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages uw-mailutils depends on: ii libc-client2002edebian 7:2002edebian1-13 UW c-client library for mail proto ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcomerr2 1.39-1common error description library ii libkrb53 1.4.4~beta1-1 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libpam0g 0.79-3.1 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libssl0.9.80.9.8b-2 SSL shared libraries uw-mailutils recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". It did not reboot, but I also did _not_ see any messages that the Linux kernel would be tried to be loaded. As reported before, it simply hangs (formerly rebooted) after ``(XEN) Xen trace buffers: disabled''. So, it might be a different issue than the Debian bug #385574, which involved the Linux kernel being ran and _then_ crashing, if I have read that report correctly and remember correctly now. Yes, I agree completely, and started work on that yesterday. However, #359855 has me stymied. It happens reliably for my pbuilder on x386, and without a fix, there's not much I can do. Fixing it is out of my league; I am nowhere near knowing postscript, nor what bugs gs might have. I sent a ping to the gs-gpl maintainer; among other things, the latest stable version of gs is now GPLd (it used to be that only old versions were GDLd). However, evidence is that the gs-gpl maintainer doesn't really do much with his packages, and I am not sanguine about getting a reply back. Excuse me, I was just trying to put things looking good before I get out on [VAC] and I tried to build pipsecd. It builds with no problems both in a non-clean and in a clean environment. I think everybody would agree that this bug's severity can be demoted to "important", as Amaya is the only person so far reporting this problem. I'll do so, and also tag it moreinfo. Bug#359651: mountall.sh: additional proc mountpoints (for chroots) are not mounted
One solution to this problem would be to simplify mountnfs to do 'mount -a' when the network is up, instead of 'mount -a -tnfs'. Is there any reason why it should not try to mount all the entries in /etc/fstab that isn't mounted yet? At the moment it only try to mount some file system types listed in the script. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#386754: moreutils: 'ifdata -ph': vague error about nonexistant devices.
Package: moreutils Version: 0.17 Severity: normal Supposing the fallible user gets a name wrong, this error might worsen their confusion: % ifdata -ph localhost ; echo $? ioctl on localhost: No such device 0 % ifdata -ph /dev/modem ; echo $? ioctl on /dev/modem: No such device 0 ...'device' being vague, users might wonder if 'localhost' or '/dev/modem' existed. If it was kernel error, it would be better to catch the error before calling the kernel, or if that's unfeasible, to parse the kernel's error after the fact. Bug#379518: Partial fix
This returns lilo to functionality when the appropriate disk=/dev/sdb inaccessible lines are present. Available in convenient dpatch format. It should be applied immediately, to a high-priority upload. As noted in the patch description, this eliminates at least one of the failure modes: Fatal: '/dev/sdb' is not a whole disk device I believe it also eliminates this failure mode. Andrew Moise might care to confirm: Fatal: stat /dev/sda: No such file or directory It doesn't eliminate the third failure mode, which occurs when a device node is missing: Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure. Name change: '/dev/sdb' -> '/dev/sdb' Cannot proceed maybe you need to add this to your lilo.conf: disk=/dev/sdb inaccessible (real error shown below) Fatal: open /dev/sdb: No such file or directory This third failure mode can be worked around by creating the appropriate device nodes. That is obviously extremely suboptimal, so I wouldn't close the bug just yet. -- Nathanael Nerode <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Bush admitted to violating FISA and said he was proud of it. Umm, but bug #325135 was an issue on August 29, 2005, and it was fixed by Andres Salomon *on that same day*. The only reason it's not closed is that none of us noticed that it's still open, AFAICT. Besides, > + chown root:root $(DEB_DESTDIR)/etc/maildroprc That's just a workaround, not actually a solution to that problem. We need to find where in the build system is this file created so haphazardly that it has the wrong owner. > This is done as part to make maildrop available for the next release. Bug#383569: NMU redone
Tags 383569 + pending thanks Hi! I've been working on amsn, and after a lot of frustration, decided to go through a path similar to what dato had suggested, although not exactly the same. I moved the .so files to the correct /usr/lib dir, and symlinked those files in the /usr/share dir. It's now working properly. And even though the solution is not perfect, it's the best I could get without ending up crazy. I'm attaching the full interdiff output of the NMU that I plan to upload. It's similar to the previous one, but includes some extra things for putting things in the right place. I'll be uploading to 3-day delayed queue. -- Bessos,(o_ Marga. I hope cdrkit will become a sustainable effort and wish you the best! -- Robbe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#385738: mp3blaster: stutters only on .ogg files
Package: mp3blaster Version: 1:3.2.3-1 Followup-For: Bug #385738 I have the same problem. But it only happens with .ogg files. .mp3 files are played correctly. It seems that mp3blaster begins to stutter on certain parts of songs (maybe on certain bitrates or peaks or something other, I have no idea). Other parts of the songs are played correctly. Playing the .ogg files with ogg123 does not stutter. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17 Locale: LANG=C, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages mp3blaster depends on: ii libc62.3.6.ds1-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.1.1-13 GCC support library ii libncurses5 5.5-3 Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libsidplay1 1.36.59-4 SID (MOS 6581) emulation library ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-13The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libvorbis0a 1.1.2-1 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libvorbisfile3 1.1.2-1 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi mp3blaster recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#386730: zsh: printf doesn't handle single-digit and two-digit octal escapes
Package: zsh Version: 4.3.2-14 Severity: normal zsh's builtin printf fails to interpret two-digit octal escape, such as '\1' or '\33'. For example: zsh% printf '\33abc' | hd 5c 33 33 61 62 63 |\33abc| 0006 On the other hand, the printf from textutils handles them: $ /usr/bin/printf '\33abc' | hd 1b 61 62 63 |.abc| 0004 The zshbuiltins man page promises "formatting rules are the same as used in C", and C explicitly supports single-digit and double-digit octal escapes in string and character literals -- see section "6.4.4.4 Character constants" of the C99 standard. Furthermore, POSIX explicitly states that \d and \dd are supported by printf(1) -- see http://tinyurl.com/gkdfr/, extended description, item 3. The Solaris printf(1), the bash printf builtin, and the FreeBSD printf(1) all support them. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-686 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages zsh depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0]1.5.3 Debian configuration management sy ii libc62.3.6.ds1-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libncurses5 5.5-2 Shared libraries for terminal hand Versions of packages zsh recommends: ii libcap1 1:1.10-14 support for getting/setting POSIX. ii libpcre3 6.4-2 Perl 5 Compatible Regular Expressi -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
