Bug#405891: RM: swingwt -- RoQA; orphaned, no revdeps, few popcon installs, alternatives

2007-01-06 Thread Nathanael Nerode
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Orphaned since February, no reverse dependencies, 11 popcon installs. There's
Swing support in Classpath, and Sun's Java is being released under the GPL, so
this is not the most necessary thing in the world now.

No objections when this was suggested on debian-qa last week.

Bug#263916: xserver-xfree86: [mga] SEGV when using Linux 2.6.7 kernel on MGA G200 AGP rev 1 [debugging server works]

2007-01-06 Thread Igor Mozetic

Hi Brice,

I remember the bug report vaguely, but have changed the hardware in
the meantime - so it became irrelevant for me.
As far as I'm concerned you can close the bug.
Thanks for your work!

Regards,
Igor

Hi Igor,

More than 2 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding a
segfault of the X server on kernel 2.6.7 with a MGA G200 board. A
workaround was found by using the debugging server. But, nothing
happened since. Did you reproduce the bug recently, with a less old
kernel and/or X server? If not, I will close the bug in the next weeks.

Thanks,
Brice

Yes, looks likely. I'd suggest just compiling parted_server with that
change (just run 'make').
After that use scp (you need to load the openssh-client-udeb for that) to
copy it into a running d-i and see what happens.
Again, no need to build a whole package or new image for such a focussed
change.

Bug#405080: iceweasel: Print preview messes up BiDi

2007-01-06 Thread Shai Berger
Another note I forgot, which might help solve the bug:

The page has content-encoding problems: It is marked as "ISO-8859-8" in its
HTTP headers, but includes a meta tag declaring it as "windows-1255"
(Windows-1255 is essentially ISO-8859-8-I, which differs from ISO-8859-8 in
its BiDi properties); the correct encoding is Windows-1255.

While this problem legitimately leads to rendering problems (i.e. for most
rendering problem, we have to say that the problem is in the page, not in the
browser), one does expect consistency between the normal page view and the
print preview.

Thanks,
Shai.

Bug#243501: lush

2007-01-06 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Dear Everyone,

I am going to adopt the package lush (so it doesn't get removed from
Debian) under Debian GNU/Linux OS, thus I want to fix few bugs
before I upload it under my name.

This is a follow-up to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=243501
lush_1.0+cvs.2004.04.02(ia64/unstable): FTBFS: errors during data
file build and relevant to

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=267494
M/P-a-s: lush [ia64] -- RoM; ia64-ELF issues

It seems that this issue is no longer existent on ia64 platform
for sid. Please see full build log (running within uptodate sid ia64
chroot using pdebuild)
http://www.onerussian.com/Linux/bugs/lush/ia64/lush-build.log
(also built fine within a chroot on ia64 debian box)

Absent upstream changelog forbids me to guess what upstream
release/change has fixed this bug, but current sid version seems to
build fine and runs as well (or as bad) as on any other platform (during
simple testing), thus I question a statement made in #267494: "Lush does
not work on ia64, and it is only accidental that past builds worked.".
It *does* work on ia64 and was working - it just wasn't building
right ;-)

Dear maintainers of packages-arch-specific, please remove lush entry
(which was marked as ANAIS so not fully inspected if I understood that
abbreviate correctly ;-)), so it could be built in a regular fashion for
ia64, and would allow me to close relevant bug.

Thanks everyone in advance

Bug#342029: Giving you some motivation to deal with this

2007-01-06 Thread Nathanael Nerode
>There are far bigger fish to fry; I don't imagine this will be a priority
>for me before significant headway is made in the archive wrt spurious
>dependencies on libs that *don't* have stable ABIs.

If you do this, it will make it easier for me to *find* the most problematic
of those libs so I can write patches for them. :-) I have been randomly
working through lib* packages listed in checklib.

The checklib output (http://rerun.lefant.net/checklib/) is polluted by a large
number of useless dependencies on zlib (and a few other "nonproblematic"
libraries), which can make it rather hard to sort through and find
the "really problematic" useless dependencies. Many of the useless
dependencies on zlib come from freetype, because freetype is *exporting* the
bad zlib dependency to all its users.

If some of these *heavily exported* useless dependencies were eliminated, it
would make it a lot easier to see the actual scope of the problem with
relation to libraries with unstable ABIs. A single useless dependency on a
package with a stable ABI is no big deal; dozens or hundreds makes it hard to
find the real problem cases. (I'm not currently prepared to write a program
to reparse the data from checklib, but if bugs like this fester, I may have
to waste a few days doing so.)

It's like being lintian-clean. It's certainly of "minor" importance, but
leaving it lying around is untidy and annoying; just do it next time you make
an upload (after etch releases and testing unfreezes, that is, of course).

If you had a lintian error in your package, would you make ten uploads over
the course of a year without bothering to fix it? Of course you wouldn't.
But that's what's been done with this bug. I think "need to deal with it" is
absolutely correct. "Need to deal with it urgently" would be wrong.

Bug#405890: ikiwiki: Should provide a POT file to help out translators

2007-01-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: ikiwiki
Severity: normal

Joey,

Providing the POT file in the source package helps out translators a lot,
even though this is a generated file (some maintainers/develoeprs are not
very keen to provide generated files in the source tarball).

Could you consider adding the ikiwiki.pot file to the source tarball (and,
of course, take care of providing it up-to-data:-))?

I also suggest you call for new translations by using the nice
podebconf-report-po utility (even if designed for debconf stuff, it can be
used for any other kind of gettext-based translation work by just using its
"--podir" switch).

podebconf-report-po now has a "--call" switch which allows posting to
debian-i18n (by default), attaching a POT file to get new translations in.

Bug#405889: rocksndiamonds: Please rewrite debconf templates to better fit the Developer's Reference recommendations

2007-01-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: rocksndiamonds
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The debconf templates you introduced in your package do not closely follow
the Developers Reference recommendations, nor use completely correct English
(or typography).

The attached patch is, depite my incomplete knowledge of English, an attempt
to rewrite them to better fit the current recommended way to write debconf
templates.

Please consider getting templates reviewed by the debian-l10n-english
mailing list in such cases.

After fixing this and before uploading a new package, please consider using
the "podebconf-report-po" utility to call for templates translations.

For this, after fixing your templates file:

-run debconf-updatepo
-run "podebconf-report-po --call" and leave translators a decent delay to
send you new translations (somethign like 7-10 days)

In the future, in case you fix or change the debconf templates, you'll be
able to use that "podebconf-report-po" utility alone, to warn translators of the
changes and give them a chance to update their translations. Please have a
look at this utility's man page.

While I agree with you that this seems like a gratuitous change, I'm

Do you remember exaclty the commands that you executed with kcmshell?
I have looked at the "Control Center" and direclty in the kcmshell
options and there is not "User management" module:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ kcmshell --list | grep -i user
useragent - Configure the way Konqueror reports itself
kcm_useraccount- User information such as password, name and email
privacy- Privacy - a kcontrol module to clean unwanted traces
the user leaves on the system

To manage users in KDE you have kuser. Perhaps were you using this tool?

Very true.

As I see this section, test is very confusing. Why suggest installing
program when you find it by dpkg? It should be suggesting to use
already installed package. This initial part of this section seems to
be mix of aph and joy writing.

I am updating CVS version soon.

Bug#405886: PATCH: add invocation mode for custom add-on udebs

2007-01-06 Thread Nathanael Nerode
Package: anna
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

This patch actually doesn't do very much, and it doesn't mess with the behavior
of anna on existing invocations at all.

During the development of customization-modules, I found that anna did have some
hardwired behavior which seemed inappropriate for the context. This therefore
adds a third way of invoking anna, which has a much simpler udeb-selection
procedure
than the ordinary methods. It asks about all of them, except for:
* those already installed, which are skipped
* udebs with mismatching subarch or kernel, which are skipped
* certain kernel packages involving "Provides" which are queued by anna-install
  (which should never happen unless a customization udeb does it)
* possibly certain situtations involving "Enhances"; I didn't mess with that
part of
  the code because I think it doesn't work correctly at the moment anyway

I believe this is of sufficient size that my copyright notice *is* necessary.

On 1/6/07, David Härdeman wrote:

Many of the issues that you bring up
require changes that would need to be implemented in a later version of
the installer.

i understand that Etch is pretty much done. i didn't expect anything
to get done right away, i just felt like my report was going to end up
being a waste of my time because i didn't hear anything back and
thought what i said didn't matter to anyone.

3) ntfs-3g driver

Is a beta driver, and scheduled to be merged into the "official" drivers
once it is deemed stable enough by its own developers. To add support
for it now would be premature (IMHO)

well, i don't think the installer team should delay work on
migrateability just because ntfs-3g needs to mature more. perhaps a
migration install (starting with Lenny) could be made available via an
install boot option while it is worked on and while we're waiting for
more confidence in the ntfs-3g driver. the people that want to try
out the bleeding edge stuff can give it a shot, test it, break it, and
report on it. when deemed ready, the work can be quickly made
available as part of the default install. you can't imagine how much
this would simplify migration and thus increase the potential debian
user-base.

4) Sharing email between windows and Linux

Once again, this is an application-specific issue and not something for
the installer team. In addition, it would depend on a writable
partition, and thus depends on the ntfs-3g driver mentioned above.

it is a pain in the neck (primarily due to microsoft's continual use
of binary formats). i do think that part of the job is for the
installer team because if mail is set up correctly during
installation, then user will find the barrier much lower when
converting. someone needs to be put on the task of getting mail
migration working flawlessly via readpst and the mail readers.

So, it is not that your bug report is ignored, but rather that some
issues are outside the scope of the installer and some are not possible
to fix within the current Etch release timeframe.

i think everything i said was applicable to installation -- because
the installer should do all migration tasks automatically. if you
make the average user think or feel uncomfortable, it's over.

thank you for responding so promptly.

Bug#405884: netcdfg-dev fails to install when /usr/doc is a symbolic link to /use/share/doc

2007-01-06 Thread LUK ShunTim
Package: netcdfg-dev
Version: 3.6.1-1
Severity: normal

Hello,

The package is left unconfigured if /usr/doc is a symbolic link to
/usr/share/doc. Commenting out the line

rm -f /usr/doc/netcdfg-dev

in netcdfg-dev.postinst did the trick.

I'm not really sure about the severity of this (bug?) but perhaps it may be a
little piece of useful information to people having the same symbolic link like
me.

Bug#405885: spf_dns.h requires HAVE_* symbols

2007-01-06 Thread JP Sugarbroad
Package: libspf2-dev
Version: 1.2.5-4
Severity: minor

spf_dns.h requires certain HAVE_* symbols be defined and the
appropriate header files be included. This is not really conducive to
having them work out of the box, since you get strange conflicting
symbol errors if you just use them.

Easily worked around, but annoying.

Bug#403426: kernel corrupts LUKS partition header on arm

On 1/5/07, Gordon Farquharson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

However, I have found that I am unable to access the LUKS partition

Martin, I wonder if this has anything to do with the virtual memory
bug in the kernel that we experienced with apt. It could be that this
bug existed before 2.6.19 but was much harder to trigger (e.g. see
http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/1/3/285). It would be interesting to try
accessing a LUKS partition under heavy load while running 2.6.20-git,
but that will have to wait until the weekend for me to test it.

Ok, I tested 2.6.19-1~experimental.1 +

  vm-fix-nasty-and-subtle-race-in-shared-mmap-ed-page-writeback.patch
  flush_anon_page-generic.patch
  flush_anon_page-arm.patch

and I am still unable to access the LUKS paritition under heavy load
and swapping, so it appears that there is someting else causing this
problem.

Are these actually anymore dangerous than cookies? And it seems that
iceweasel uses the cookie controls to control these as well. I'd
definitely like some more opinions before we decide to change this
versus firefox.

Pranay,

This sounds a lot like What hardware are you using? Is it a G3 based OldWorld
PowerMac, by any chance? If so, does the workaround in the bug
report help? If not on G3 PowerMac hardware, then it's even *more*
interesting to know if the workaround helps!

Enjoy!

The problem still exists, if no one has fixed anything there. I no
longer have access to a card, so I cannot test anymore. I would
suggest that the driver be removed rather than just closing the bug and
continuing to ship a known broken driver.

Bug#405883: No tun0 in Linux but have en2 in osx

Hi, I'm not sure that this is a bug, but I have setup MOL (0.9.70-20ubuntu2)
in Kubuntu 6.06ppc and I am running tiger 10.4.8 without problems except there
is no tun0 in the interfaces.

tun is not loaded when MOL starts but I can modprobe it and it appears but
still no tun0 in ifconfig. I do have an 'en2' on the mac osx side but I can't
get an internet connection without tun0.

Actually, any filename >= 108 characters long is too long anyway (due to the
size of the sun_path field in struct sockaddr_un). This is now tested for in
what should soon become 0.5.10.

The patch is here:
http://zap.tartarus.org/~ds/hg/gxine/?cmd=changeset;node=f3496e5e172f;style=gitweb>

I'll prepare a 0.5.8 update with this patch, but I'd like to know (from an
RM's point of view) which of the patches in the existing 0.5.8-2 should make
it into etch. I'd like to include, at least, the patches for the locking bugs
(-release CC'ed for this reason).

http://zap.tartarus.org/~ds/debian/dists/unstable/main/source/gxine_0.5.8-2.dsc>
- not for upload, at least not without the extra patch.

I kind of have to agree with Cesar here. They look a little indistinct
at small sizes, and while the unified color scheme seemed cool, I
guess it does have a downside. Perhaps unicko would be willing to give
each icon a more unique color scheme (blue for iceweasel, leave the
green for icedove and red for iceape?) and perhaps add a bit more
contrast to the borders because it blends a bit too much into a light
background. Hope that doesn't sound too ungrateful.

I'm not entirely sure this is a bug in iceweasel. The gnome force quit
dialog may be kind of naive in how it operates, it may just expect the
window to me closed after clicking the close button a certain number
of seconds later. If that's the case I would call this more a bug in
gnome.

Looking at the manpage, this seems to be because chmod -x was used and
not a-x.

Bug#405535: Support Package diffs

Yes, this is on my TODO list. I have already implemented the pdiff
handling and reconstruction of Packages files, but I was running into
difficulties with the reconstructed Packages (vs. .gz and .bz2) files
not matching their checksums in the Release files. So I disabled it
and just deny all .pdiff requests, to make sure that it would at least
work correctly, if not optimally, for the etch deadline. I'll try to
get this working again and dig a little deeper. Thanks for the
report.

No. It is correct but somewhat confusing tag.

If it was something-like:

I was not confused by my failing eye sight :-)

Bug#405880: kdelibs4c2a: KDE User Mgmt tool breaks login permissions

2007-01-06 Thread Larry Lade
Package: kdelibs4c2a
Version: 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-5
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

I create a new user using the "User Management" Control Center application
(kcmshell), in su/Administrator mode. After this, I am unable to log into X,
numerous services will not start, and I get "I have no name" with console
logins.

The problem turns out to be that the permissions on /etc/passwd and /etc/group
are changed by this tool to 600 instead of 644. Manually resetting the
permissions fixes everything.

Just to add a little more data, I have the same version of python-gpod,
(0.4.0-0.3, from Marillat's repo), and everything works as expected.

Bug#405878: utf8-migration-tool: crashes on start with message "TypeError: category LC_ALL is not supported"

2007-01-06 Thread Casper Gielen
Package: utf8-migration-tool

The program crashes on startup with the following message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/utf8migrationtool", line 45, in ?
dmrc.set(section, option, locale.getlocale(locale.LC_ALL)[0])
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/locale.py", line 364, in getlocale
raise TypeError, 'category LC_ALL is not supported'
TypeError: category LC_ALL is not supported

Changing LC_ALL to any other locale gives the same result.
Unsetting LC_ALL, or setting it to something in valid results in:

Using the fallback 'C' locale.

I suppose that running this with an invalid locale setting is not supported,
but that should be handled more gracefully. But perhaps it's related to the
problem reported above, so I included it to be on the safe side.

I've also tried running it as a newly created user, with the same result.

TeXlive's UTF-8 support is just like teTeX's: it all depends on the
TeX flavour you're using, and the most popular (TeX and LaTeX) have
poor support for multi-byte strings.

And using iconv is tricky, because sometimes iconv hangs with some
Chinese texts, for example the original tang300 fortune cookie in
simplified Chinese (Debian now offers a proper UTF-8 version).

There are packages like utf8x that are under development, but IMHO
that just takes too much time and we need a quick fix. UTF-8 has been
around for many years now.

Luckily, CJK offers IMHO superior results the easy way, supporting
glyphs up to u+10, which is enough for most of us, simple mortals.
Just set up a font with a font definition file and correct map files,
and off we go. I could make some sort of a template file of my own
debian/rules file, and perhaps document it a little bit more.

Two things are needed though: an updated Unicode.sfd file in
freetype1-tools (I just filed a bug report), and a DFSG-free font that
covers most scripts. There is Bitstream's Cyberbit TTF, but that
isn't DFSG-free.

Titus is freely downloadable for individuals, but isn't DFSG-free
either. And it mainly covers Western scripts.

Arne Götje is working on two unified Chinese TTF that includes CJK
Extension B (and perhaps C), but Arne told me that he prefers to wait,
because some structural problems have occurred when developing.

What we could do, is to make Type1 fonts for each script. So we
convert fonts for Cyrillic, IPA, Greek, etc., and make a latex-cjk-*
package for each font.

Advantage is that it works 99% (I've already tried for Georgian,
Russian and CJK Extension B), and it's relatively easy to make such
new fonts. And if we can put a few heads together, we could extend
the sfd files in /usr/share/texmf/fonts/sfd/ [freetype1-tools] to
include other scripts, so we get not only Unicode fonts but also
linked fonts for the "ancient" encodings.

Another advantage is that with this system, there will be a unified
structure for each language.

Disadvantages are firstly that it would create quite a few extra MB
for the Debian servers. And secondly, the CJK package was never
intended to be used apart from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai or
Vietnamese, so language-specific problems (like complex ligatures in
Indic and Arabic languages) are not (yet?) supported. And thirdly,
authors need to show some goodwill to switch to the new system. But I
regard the last one as a minor problem, since the only change will be
the names of the fonts they need to know.

I'll have more time next month, in February, when my exams will be
over, to thoroughly check debiandoc-sgml about font issues.

Cheers

Bug#405876: Subject: gxine: segfault on startup with long HOME dir

2007-01-06 Thread Florian Grunow
Package: gxine
Version: 0.5.8-1
Severity: important

Debian gxine uses the HOME environment variable without proper bounds
checking in version 0.5.8. This results in a buffer overflow when the
HOME environment variable is longer than or equal to 242. It is possible
to execute code, which doesn't seem to be the case in version 0.5.9.
Version 0.5.9 (not tested as .deb, built from source) simply segfaults.

Bug#405579: PowerPC, prep-flavor: manual partitioning error

2007-01-06 Thread Ulrich Teichert
Hi,

I think I found a possible source of this:

[del]
>/lib/partman/update.d/50filesystems : IN : CHANGE_FILE_SYSTEM
>=dev=scsi=host0=bus0=target0=lun0=disc 32256-98703359 prep

>parted_server: Filesystem + not found, let's see if it is a flag
>parted_server: Bad file system or flag type: +
>parted_server: line 1616. CRITICAL ERROR!!! EXITING
[del]

In this context 32256-98703359 is the partition ID, "prep" is only a flag,
not a real partition type. This is important for the code flow in:

packages/partman/partman-base/parted_server.c

there's the function command_change_file_system():

if (2 != iscanf("%as %as", &id, &s_fstype))
critical_error("Expected partition id and file system");
log("command_change_file_system(%s,%s)", id, s_fstype);
part = partition_with_id(disk, id);
if (part == NULL) {
critical_error("Partition not found: %s", id);
}
free(id);
fstype = ped_file_system_type_get(s_fstype);
free(s_fstype);
if (fstype == NULL) {
log("Filesystem %s not found, let's see if it is a flag",
s_fstype);
flag = ped_partition_flag_get_by_name(s_fstype);
if (ped_partition_is_flag_available(part, flag)) {
ped_partition_set_flag(part, flag, 1);
} else {
critical_error("Bad file system or flag type: %s",
   s_fstype);
}
} else {
ped_partition_set_system(part, fstype);
}
...

where s_fstype is free'ed too early. I would propose the following patch:

Index: packages/partman/partman-base/parted_server.c

+++ packages/partman/partman-base/parted_server.c   (working copy)

 }
 free(id);
 fstype = ped_file_system_type_get(s_fstype);

I am not sure if this will really fix the problem, I'd like to have the
patch reviewed before I take the next step.

First thing to wait is etch release, I think. Then we can make large
change such as switching to texlive.

OK.

After etch release and when you have time, can you look into font choice
of debiandopc-sgml tool chain (not just for CJK but all other languages)
and add explanation text to font package choice determination scheme
(where to look for and what to chose.) in generic way so ther document
will be valid for future release too.

 /usr/share/perl5/DebianDoc_SGML/Locale/xx_YY./LaTeX

This has language specific definitions

As I review these, it looks like we need to have 2 entries xx_YY.
for each language so we can handle both UTF-8 and traditional encodings.
H... that calls to add new feature to debiandoc-sgml. Maybe -l
locale is not ending with utf-8 then we use traditional encoding but if
they are ending with traditional encoding, we should use utf-t counter
part. That will be major rewite of scripts.

If we use current build process, UTF-8 encoded latex source needs to be
converted to traditional encoding. (Can be done by iconv running at -s
option script fixlatex.)

But that sounds too complicated. Does TeXlive has capability to handle
UTF-8 encoded source?

2007-01-06 Thread Matthias Klose

gnat-glade is at version 2006-3; should gnat-glade-doc be updated to
match the gnat-glade version? Or should gnat-glade-doc be removed
from testing before the etch release?

thanks

Bug report #343489 is really strange. The jed-script symlink was
introduced in 0.99.17.111-1 according to the changelog and it exists in
0.99.18-1 (the next release after 0.99.17.135-1; available on
). Hence, I reassign the bug to the last
unstable release before 0.99.17.111-1.

Schöne Grüße, Jörg.

Beg pardon, I just noticed I'm running the same version of 'nethogs' as
last June, when opening this bug -- I'd assumed it was a newer version.
Given that, my previous message isn't the requested test!

The new version is in CVS, would somebody please send a URL?
Preferably to a .deb file if one exists.

It's as I guessed: You are using gnome-volume-manager from unstable,
which is patched to use pmount instead of gnome-mount, gnome-vfs2 (used
by nautilus) though prefers gnome-mount over pmount.
So when you insert the usb stick, pmount is used for the mounting (the
password dialog is from pmount), but when you unmount the media from
within nautilus, gnome-mount is used, which tears down the luks
encryption differently than pmount set it up. This way, subsequent mount
attempts fail.
So, the bug is within gnome-volume-manager. It should prefer gnome-mount
over pmount (which the version from experimental 2.15.0-1 does).

Cheers,
Michael

since this particular file is not distributable at all, you should

Yes, I agree.

Currently, the relevant text is under EOVERFLOW, which is the POSIX.1
standard error for this case. But as you note, Linux actually delivers
EFBIG in this case.

See http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7253
(I should have fixed the manual page at the same time as I made this report.)

I have rewritten the EOVERFLOW error text on this page:

   EFBIG pathname refers to a regular file, too large to be
  opened; see O_LARGEFILE above. (POSIX.1-2001 speci-
  fies the error EOVERFLOW for this case.)

The change will appear in upstream 2.44.

Thanks for your report.

Cheers,

Michael

 Today I noticed this problem again and decided to provide an strace.
 Please note that the strace does not stop (the same block repeats again
 and again until I killed strace.

 This bug happens to appear quite often (with a better chance when you
 haven't updated your packages for a while), while it does almost never
 happen on systems which I update daily.

I'm currently on a 2MBit DSL line. Nothing spectacular.

It may have something to do with the new pdiffs introduced a half year
ago. Before the pdiff-age it took only a few seconds to download the
package list, but today it takes literally ages to get all the stuff
when you don't have updated your box for a while (> 1 week).

I don't know what exactly takes all the time (usually a few minutes) --
I doubt this is the raw download time for all the small files. I guess
after aptitude downloaded each pdiff it does something fishy which takes
longer the more pdiffs it has downloaded and under some circumstances
even hangs...

Ok, I guess I'm not really helping with my wild speculations. I've
prepared a sid system and plan to let it rot a few days in oder provoke
a long package list download. I hope I can reproduce this bug with a
debugging version of aptitude.

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#404907: installation-report: winxp to debian etch migration

2007-01-06 Thread David Härdeman

On Sat, Jan 06, 2007 at 06:14:08PM -0500, Michael Gilbert wrote:

It's not that noone cares, but rather that we are pretty late in the
game to get a release out the door. Many of the issues that you bring up
require changes that would need to be implemented in a later version of
the installer.

Some feedback on points that you've brought up:

1) network not being brought up correctly after reboot

I believe this to be a temporary error, I experienced similar behaviour
recently and a updated set of packages fixed it...not sure exactly what
the problem was though

2) binary codecs and plugins

This is beyond the scope of the installer team, binary codecs,
drivers, etc are a distribution-wide (and OSS-wide issue).

3) ntfs-3g driver

Is a beta driver, and scheduled to be merged into the "official" drivers
once it is deemed stable enough by its own developers. To add support
for it now would be premature (IMHO)

4) Sharing email between windows and Linux

Once again, this is an application-specific issue and not something for
the installer team. In addition, it would depend on a writable
partition, and thus depends on the ntfs-3g driver mentioned above.

So, it is not that your bug report is ignored, but rather that some
issues are outside the scope of the installer and some are not possible
to fix within the current Etch release timeframe.

I have a Thinkpad T60 with a Core Duo processor and kvm is working fine
here.

If you haven't done so already, you should check to see that support is
enabled in the BIOS. The output of /proc/cpuinfo on my machine had vmx
among the list of extensions, even before enabling that feature in the
BIOS. I also had to completely power down for the changes to take effect,
(a reboot was not enough).

Another thing to watch out for is that you have read/write permissions
for /dev/kvm, (it's 0660, root:root here). You'll see the same error
message, ("Could not initialize KVM, will disable KVM support"), if
you don't have sufficient privileges.

Yes sure.

The file that reports the statement 'This software is NOT distributed under
an Open Source license.' is the firmware loader, that is not part of the
modules. This may be a bug for the linux-wlan-ng package (the utilities)
and this binary may be moved in the lwng-firmware package. Anyway this
should not affect the modules. Also notice that firmware is not strictly
needed, only some devices really need it (so this utility is not vital
and if the license is a real problem can be removed or moved to non free).

I'll ask the upstream if this .c file is under this license for a good
reason...

Ciao

Progress!

In xorg 6.9, hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/Imakefile had this:

 #if defined(AlphaArchitecture)
 SpecialObjectRule(lnx_ev56.o, lnx_ev56.c, -mcpu=ev56)
 #endif

This isn't carried over at all into 7.0 thanks to the build system reorg.

Building lnx_ev56 with the right build flags gives me a working X server

  Sorry about the delay.

  Actually, that's correct: -t in aptitude, as in apt-get, means that
versions whose Release matches that string will be chosen "by default".
You'll get the same result from "apt-get -t blablabla".  I've tried a
couple installs with -t and they generally seem to do the right thing.
If you still have this problem, could you provide a specific example
that isn't working?

Thanks,

!rrt means 'not string', and that means 0. That's why maildrop said that

Bug#405870: sysvinit: halt binary missing ifdown, breaks wake on lan, src compile works

2007-01-06 Thread Harry Coin
Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.86.ds1-36
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Using the default binary version of halt shipped with etch prevents diskless
systems from booting in response to the wake-on-lan
packet. Can't get more critical than a cluster of systems that can't be booted.

The 3c59x driver, among others, depends on ifdown to set its wake-on-lan (wol)
functions. The binary version
of halt shipped with etch (including deboostrap) does not call ifdown.

In a diskless setting (clusters) the net driver isn't deconfigured (and WOl
enabled) until the ifdown in halt.

Compiling 'halt' from the sysvinit sources results in a binary larger than the
one in etch, and it works properly.

I've proven this by putting debug messages in the kernel, the ioctl cancelling
the IFUP flag is never made
in the default 'halt' code on etch, but is in the version compiled from the
sources.

I noted a sysvinit 'fix' some time ago that claims it turns off 'ifdown' on
non-linux systems in halt. I think this
version got compiled and wrongly sent out in linux, thus breaking linux WOL
depending on the network chip.

This is due to a change in xorg breaking the installer. It should be
fixed soon.

Bug#404836: pam_limits.so does NOT reset all values

Each of the other values listed here has an explicit default set in
pam_limits, because RLIM_INFINITY is not a sane default for any of them --
not for nice and rt priority because these values have a finite scale, not
for core file size because we want core files disabled by default, and not
for stack size because... well, for no reason that I can actually
distinguish from the case of RLIMIT_NOFILES, hmm.

Thanks, you make a fair case; if we're shadowing the kernel's default for
RLIMIT_STACK already, there's no reason we shouldn't be willing to do the
same for RLIMIT_NOFILES. :) I'll take this upstream for further discussion.

Bug#405868: totem-mozilla: video is not produced on cbs's innertube website

2007-01-06 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: totem-mozilla
Version: 2.16.4-2
Severity: normal

the cbs television channel makes reruns of some of its television shows
available online in an application that they call the "innertube"
(http://www.cbs.com/innertube/). the video itself is realplayer (if
the site is viewed on windows, you can see the realplayer application
spawn). within the mozilla-based browsers, using the totem-mozilla
plugin on debian, the audio on the site plays just fine, but the video
just isn't there.

thanks in advance for working on this issue. these video rerun sites
are becoming increasingly popular, and it would be a shame if they were
unavailable on gnu/linux because of technical, rather than
philosophical, problems with our applications.

Bug#405867: Debian patch breaks some headers with accents

2007-01-06 Thread Joaquim Ortega-Cerd
Package: kdepim
Version: 4:3.5.5.dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal

Since version 4:3.5.5.dfsg.1-2 kmail stopped treating correctly my name in
the header. The last à in my last name is lost (strangely enough if I write
it not in the last position of my name in the profile it works without
problem). Prior to that version it worked without problem. I suspect the
culprit is
 18_optimize_splitAddressInternal.diff
more concretely the last lines:

++  displayName = dName.stripWhiteSpace().local8Bit();
++  comment = cmmt.stripWhiteSpace().local8Bit();
++  addrSpec = aSpec.stripWhiteSpace().local8Bit();

shouldn't they be

++  displayName = dName.stripWhiteSpace();
++  comment = cmmt.stripWhiteSpace();
++  addrSpec = aSpec.stripWhiteSpace();

Quim

I just took a look into it, thw first I found was:

| * This software is distributed on an "AS
| * IS" basis, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, either express or
| * implied. See the License for the specific language governing
| * rights and limitations under the License.

| * If you received it without a direct license from AbsoluteValue
| * Systems, Inc. then you are not a licensed user and are violating

The others seems okay. And the copyright file for the binaries must
mention the GPL.

Bug#405866: evince: does not automatically size window to browser size when called from mozplugger

2007-01-06 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: evince
Version: 0.4.0-3
Severity: normal

when mozplugger is configured to use evince as the pdf viewer plugin,
when a pdf file is clicked on, the evince window is not sized to the
correct size of the browser (assuming the browser window is larger
than the default evince window). however, if the browser window is
resized, the evince window will indeed adapt correctly.

thanks for the hard work.
