Yes, many people experience such lockup without having any clue what's
going on. There are maybe many different problems out there, but they
all appear the same with this lockup message in the log. And it's very
hard to debug unfortunately.

It seems that EXA causes more lockups (you can try Option "AccelMethod"
"XAA" to disable EXA). Having multiple monitors enabled may be involved
too (try only having a single one at a time).

BTW, maybe that's not clear from my transcript, but it's not dying at
all. It happily downloads the stream. In the transcript, I merely
interrupted it by hand with ctrl-c.

Not necessarily. That is just how gettext currently works but it is not
how gettext *must* work, hence the --endianness option in the source
code.

> Otherwise it
> would be impossible for us to have "Architecture: all" packages
> like util-linux-locales containing just binary .mo files.
>

Actually, endianness *IS* important because we should not be *having*
Architecture:all packages that contian .mo files - that was
demonstrated during my talk on TDebs at Fosdem.

On big endian systems, the CPU wastes time converting the endianness at
loadtime which is important for embedded devices.

All packages containing .mo files should be Arch:any and this is
something I will be fixing during the course of TDeb development in
Debian. All the other questions that arise from this (increased package
numbers, extra builds, repository implications, userspace controls and
cache sizes) have all got solutions that are currently working in
Emdebian and which are due to be applied to Debian (probably after
Lenny).

TDebs might also need to drop the hash table in the .mo, again
discussed at Fosdem, but I'm currently working on whether that is
necessary and whether it has positive or negative consequences on the
use of .mo files on embedded devices.

I started working on TDebs for Emdebian thinking exactly the same way,
that .mo files were immune to other problems of endianness etc. (The
slides at Fosdem claimed that TDeb packages would be Arch:all until
the question and answer section of the talk). They are not Arch:all. It
is just that msgfmt defaults to little unless --endianness is specified,
irrespective of the build machine architecture.

In some ways, this is a bug but documenting the --endianness option
allows others to not make the same mistake again.

.mo files *are* architecture dependent and should be handled as such.
Just because 'it happens to work' right now does not mean it is the
correct way to handle .mo files.

Source packages that put .mo files into an Arch:all binary are buggy -
implementing that fix will involve lots of work in Debian to handle the
increase in package numbers but leave that to me - I'll sort out the
mass bug filing(s) when other TDeb support is implemented elsewhere in
Debian after Lenny. (In fact, these bugs will simply disappear anyway
because the implementation of TDebs means that *no* other package in
Debian would contain any .mo files, all .mo files would only exist in
TDeb packages which will be Architecture:any.)

I don't know, though I'd just suggest sending a mail to the Debian
mentors mailing list, stating that:

1. The package has been verified once by your potential sponsors
(better to say who they are and CC them).

2. Give a description of the package and details.

3. Sate that the upload fixes a really old RC bug.

Thanks.

Bug#468461: dhttpd: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

2008-02-28 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Package: dhttpd
Version: 1.02a-15
Tags: patch
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: missing-dependency

To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the anacron init.d script would make it possible for me to use this
information to check the current sequence and to speed up the debian
boot.

I am working on a system to update the boot sequence based on these
dependencies, and would like see this as the default in Lenny.
Because of this, it is nice if the dependencies was updated quickly.

http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html>
documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from
http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts>.

Here is a patch to document the dependencies. I hope this is correct.
I was very confused by the current boot sequence numbers (starting
before networking is set up, but also stopping before networking is
taken down), so please check carefully that I picked the correct
dependencies.

As the stop script do not seem to do much except killing the daemon,
that task might be better left to the sendsigs script in runlevel 0
and 6, to speed up shutdown. If this is indeed the case, I recommend
removing 0 and 6 from the Default-Stop list.

Bug#468459: atm-tools: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

2008-02-28 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Package: atm-tools
Version: 2.4.1-17

OK, I removed it (forgot the --shared in the last attempt), and now the

I think it happens when the IP address (or one of them?) of the build
host is unresolvable. I saw it too with my Perl 5.10 rebuilds.

Anyway, 0.23-2 closed this so I suppose Gregor looked into it properly :)

Not much, I'm afraid. I just built all the arch:any packages I could
with sbuild --make-binNMU="Rebuild for Perl 5.10" and uploaded them to a
local repository that's in the sbuild chroot sources.list and is managed

An option if you do not want it in Lenny is to upload it and register
a RC bug to flag that it is not ready for testing yet. This way it
would be available in unstable and for a wider user base, while you
avoid having to support an old version in Lenny.

I saw at FOSDEM that it is already working, and this make me believe
it should get as much testing as possible to improve the chance of
increasing its quality quickly. :)

Bug#468455: libiodbc2: libiodbc.so in the wrong package

2008-02-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: libiodbc2
Version: 3.52.6-1
Severity: important

Hi Bart,

I recently noticed that when building openldap2.3 on a system which had
libiodbc2 installed, it was picking up a dependency on this library even
though libiodbc2-dev was not installed.

It appears that libiodbc2 has all of its .so files in the runtime package:

 libiodbc2 (3.52.1-2) unstable; urgency=medium

   * Moved all .so files from libiodbc2-dev to iodbc and libiodbc2 as some
applications like iodbcadm-gtk from iodbc load their shared libraries
in a DLL wrapper function at runtime and not via the common dynamic
linking way! (thanks to Alexey Nezhdanov). Closes: #275179

  -- Christian Hammers <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thu, 7 Oct 2004 23:02:04 +0200

This is still wrong -- the soname is the only indicator of ABI
compatibility, so if there's ever a libiodbc3, a program that dlopen()s
libiodbc.so is not guaranteed to get a compatible interface!

Please move these .so symlinks back to the -dev package where they belong,
and if necessary, fix iodbcadm-gtk to handle this appropriately.

This is actually a bug in bluez-audio. First of all it shouldn't
register it's sink (and srcs) with rank PRIMARY (they won't work
autoplugged anyway) and then they should fail gracefully as every other
sink does... in Ubuntu this is fixed already AFAIK.

Bug#468452: fail2ban: cannot recognize leap-year day

2008-02-28 Thread Taku YASUI
Package: fail2ban
Version: 0.8.1-4
Severity: normal

fail2ban cannot recognize leap-year day. You can find this problem as
follows:

 1. Up loglevel to 4 (DEBUG) on your fail2ban.conf
 2. Following message is shown at your fail2ban.log

2008-02-29 06:26:37,548 fail2ban.filter : DEBUG Found a match but no valid
date/time found for Feb 29 05:14:55 osdnns sshd[3776]: Invalid user users
from 74.205.125.93
. Please contact the author in order to get support for this format

Maybe it causes at "server/datestrptime.py". python time.strptime() cannot
recognize reap-year day when the year has not specified as follows:

% python
Python 2.4.4 (#2, Apr 5 2007, 20:11:18)
[GCC 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import time
>>> time.strptime("Feb 29 05:14:55", "%b %d %H:%M:%S")
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "", line 1, in ?
File "/usr/lib/python2.4/_strptime.py", line 425, in strptime
julian = datetime_date(year, month, day).toordinal() - \
ValueError: day is out of range for month

Standard syslogd does not recorded year. Therefore fail2ban failed to
recognize leap-year day.

I've reported this problem to sf.net tracker:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1904430&group_id=121032&atid=689044

As of more recent updates, it now fails in a somewhat more sensible way,
giving a little "no entry" bar on the track as if the file went missing.
I think that's still bad, but I wouldn't mind if the bug was closed.

Yes, and scanning to postscript and then 'lp file.ps' works.

Bug#468388: Yes - It can (sort of)

2008-02-28 Thread Scott Kitterman
man postfix-policyd-spf-perl will tell you how to set this up. It certainly
doesn't qualify as easy, but, at least for a list of IP addresses it can be
done. See the paragraph that starts "The policy server skips ..." in the
synopsis.

I agree it's not as easy or functional as it should be. If you look at
postfix-policyd-spf-python (be sure to get version 0.6 - currently in
unstable) it has the features you are looking for in a config file installed
in /etc.

Putting my upstream hat on (I'm also upstream for both these packages),
patches welcome for the Perl package. My Perl is very weak and so the
development is being done on the Python package except where people are
willing to contribute.

Bug#465737: Can't mount XFS partition on "/"

2008-02-28 Thread Niv Sardi

I believe the right solution is to set the default in the kernel, not in
mkfs, it should be possible to change lazy-sb to no-lazy-sb and only
flag when we actually want to disable it.

FS mounted with lazy-sb, should be (if unmounted cleanly) mountable by a
non-lazy-aware kernel, (and if not unmounted cleanly, then repair should
be able to fix it).

I'll try to get that pushed for next week in kernel and xfsprogs.

Cheers,

That's fine to use an RC bug to prevent the migration, as long as you
document it. One can't guess from:

,
| # Automatically generated email from bts, devscripts version 2.9.26

that your goal is to keep the package out of testing… Especially when
using another bugreport that ought to be important.

Progress has been made (thanks David !), but there are still a few CPAN
modules to package. We definitely want this before the freeze.

Sorry for the severity ping-pong, but we do not want the package in
testing yet. Do not hesitate to correct me if I use the wrong way to
prevent the migration.

Bioperl version 1.5.2 is supposed to be a development version. It became
a de facto stable version with time, and some tools will only work with
this and not with 1.4. Unfortunately, it is possible that some other
tools will only work with 1.4 and not with 1.5.2. Upstream is
considering releasing a stable 1.6 version, so I would like to postpone
decisions on this issue a few weeks. In any case, I would prefer that
this package stays in unstable until we finish to provide the
appropriate CPAN modules.

Bonne nuit ;)

EDF is the usual name of the company whose logo appears on the upstream

And you unregistered the extension manually to have a clean state if it
failed before? Read the buglog...

And of course you should think that the fix we talk about was in the
*prerm*, so it of course doesn't take effect when upgrading *to* 0.5-6
because the old postrm is executed on upgrade...

Because when the long descriptions of many different "competing"
packages all say essentially the same thing, then those descriptions
are meaningless.

That's fine. But when it's something as relatively simple as a
small httpd, you need to spell out specifics as to why I should use
monkey instead of cherokee, boa, thttpd, fnord, etc.

The micro-httpd description is a good example.

It's not "why should you *package* this s/w", it's "convince me that
I should *use* this package".

Bug#467512: vdr restarts reproducably when viewing some recordings info

2008-02-28 Thread Tobias Grimm
Hello,

Sven Mueller wrote:

Thanks for reporting this!

I did some debugging and figured out, it's a minor bug in the text rendering,
when the text contains invalid characters (in your case 0x0A - a Latin1
NON-BREAKIN-SPACE)

See also: http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/vdr/2008-February/015906.html

I've already fixed this in vdr 1.5.16-1ctvdr1, which went online on e-tobi.net
today.

The next Debian release in experimental will be vdr 1.6.0, coming in the next
weeks.

Bug#405773: Mysql auth how then?

2008-02-28 Thread Peter Scott
Thanks so much for your email.

Ive spent 2 full days on this. I tried both suggested workarounds[1] and with
wild and weird results.

Attempting to get mod_authn_dbd to go, as per the apache2 documentation just
brought apache to a grinding halt ( does not recognise mod_dbd (paraphrased)
load failed. Updated box which brought apache to 2.2.3-4+etch4 .Didnt help.

Compiling and patching mod_auth_mysql-3.0.0.tar.gz simply produced a thousand
errors at compile time

libapache2-mod-auth-pam + libpam-mysql NEARLY worked, but refused to let mysql
be authoritative even after:
- specifying AuthBasicAuthoritative Off
- using auth sufficient in /etc/pam.d/apache2
- removing pam-unix includes from ditto

The pam-mysql auth passes according to the logs, but then pam-unix stops it if
there is no system account with the same username. Password didnt seem to
matter.

Pam seems almost there to me, but my queries to pam-list have gone unanswered I
think mod_auth_pam has died.

Im nearly to the point of tears on this one[2], and im normally a robust sort.
Its a moderately production box (intranet), so the soln has to be stable, and
compatible with LAM(Php). I might be willing to give lenny a go if it means i
can just use either mod_authn_dbd or mod_auth_mysql out of the box(package).

Which do you think is going to be the best route. How far is lenny away from stable? Go back to sarge? Would another db solve the problem? Creating a mirror dbm or flatfile?

You can't, unfortunately.

Your best bet is probably to grab the apr-util 1.2.12+dfsg-2 source
package from testing, add --with-mysql to the configure line in
debian/rules, install the libmysqlclient15-dev package, and recompile
it on etch.

This has some caveats, however:

- it is not compatible with the php mysql extensions as they are
compiled in etch (might lead to segfaults)

- mod_dbd from apache2 2.2.3 has some bugs that were fixed in 2.2.6,
so I am not sure it works at all, see e.g.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=434562

- apr-util 1.2.12 has a bug that might make apache segfault if you
serve files larger than 2GB on a 32bit system

If you decide to try it, though, I would be interested to hear whether
it works.

Cheers,
Stefan

Bug#468450: seahorse: Cert level isn't set when signing a key

2008-02-28 Thread Gonzalo Bermúdez
Package: seahorse
Version: 2.20.3-2
Severity: normal

When signing a key, Seahorse asks for the certification level ('How
carefully have you checked this key?'), but regardless of what your
choice is, this setting is not added to the signature.
This behaviour can be observed by signing a key through Seahorse and

Why does a package need to clarify what's different about it than others
like it? Debian is about having the possibility of choosing between many
options for the same thing e.g. openssh, dropbear for sshd, 12 different
httpd options, etc.

Package descriptions should stick to positive aspects of the package,
and not try to draw comparisons towards other packages. IMO.

It seems to me as if you are trying to get people to justify the
packages they want to work on. If that is the case, then, I think
"because the person wants to use _this_ package" is fine. Infact, I
would go as far as saying that the wide latitude of software options for
a specific task is one of the greatest strengths of Debian.

As such, I think the revised description is perfectly acceptable for
Debian.

William

Yes, but it isn't really ready for Debian yet. Several major changes
are required before a version 1.0 and I have no wish to support the
current version for the lifetime of lenny. Please wait until after
lenny is released.

Part of that may be that it uses MAD for mp3 decoding, while old xmms decoder
was based on some code from mpg123.
There's an alternative decoder pending on xmms2 mantis, based on libmpg123.
That one is faster, though there are other points for xmms2 being slower, I
guess (like, being a more complex program).

Alrighty then,

Thomas (happening to be mpg123 maintainer, so a bit biased there;-).

This package should not be in testing.

Reasons: No security support from upstream for this version, as it is

Bug#468445: gspca-source: Cam delivers a very narrow field of view in flash applets

2008-02-28 Thread Jan Vornberger
Package: gspca-source
Version: 01.00.20-1
Severity: normal

I have a 'Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX' and use the gspca module to
operate it. The cam works fine in applications like Camorama, amsn and
Ekiga. I have noticed though, that if I use the cam with a flash-based
application on a website (using flashplugin-nonfree) the cam does work,
but shows a much narrower field of view. I have made two screenshots to
illustrate the problem:

  http://www.jan.vornberger.net/sonstiges/gspca/screenshot.camorama.png
  http://www.jan.vornberger.net/sonstiges/gspca/screenshot.flash.png

The first screenshot shows Camorama, the second one shows a flash applet
from this website:

  http://www.unitzeroone.com/old/eightball/motionDetection/

These messages appear in the output of dmesg when I use the cam:

I'm not sure if this is really a bug or rather a 'feature' of flash. I
could not find any cam related settings in the flash plugin settings
menu. I would consider it a bug/problem, because the very narrow field
of view makes the cam pretty much useless. But feel free to reduce the
severity of this bug report or inform me why this is not a bug.

On a related note: I wanted to try out the latest version of the driver
so I used gspca-source to build my own module. When I install this
module I get the following message:

  dpkg - warning: downgrading gspca-modules-2.6.22-3-686 from 2.6.22+01.00.18-9
to 01.00.20-1+2.6.22-6.lenny1.

dpkg thinks that the freshly build module is older than the one provided
in the Debian package archive, where in fact it is not. Should I file a
seperate bug for this?

Please let me know if I can provide any other information that could be
helpful.

Best regards!

Jan

Even there, it looks very much like other "very small" webservers,
such as boa, bozohttpd, cherokee, fnord, lighttpd, micro-httpd,
mini-httpd or thttpd. What does it do better than any of them? Or
worse? Or different?

Thanks for the explanation.

It's not unusual for people to run customised kernels, so this
additional requirement should be documented.
/usr/share/doc/avahi-daemon/README currently says only that Linux 2.4 or
2.6 is required.

Default Linux Capabilities are set in the kernel Security Options.

Bug#464353: How can we provide more info ?

2008-02-28 Thread Apelete Seketeli
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #464353

Hi,

I was reading some bugs reports before posting this one, and I came to the
conclusion that many people were experiencing Xserver lock-ups with the
same message showing up at some point in the log files: "Error in
I830WaitLpRing(), timeout for 2 seconds".
Trying to trigger the bug to narrow the cause didn't help as far as I'm
concerned: sometimes the server just crash after loading my desktop, even
before I start any application, and sometimes it crashes while writing a
document or mail or surfing the web, nothing related to 3D usage apparently.
What is sure is that the new 2.X Intel drivers are not ready for production,
and running a Sid doesn't come without some problems sometimes, but I would
be really glad to help providing some info if I can, since these particular
Xserver-intel problems are about 3 months old now.

Xorg log file from the last lock-up attached.

Regards.

Yes, that was a bad choice of name of my part.

The better way, in the long term, will be to write something like:
static_assert(sizeof(u32) == sizeof(float));

However, since static_assert hasn't yet been implemented in gcc, that
will not work today. I think you should change the type name or remove
the assertion.

Ben.

Q. Which is the greater problem in the world today, ignorance or apathy?
A. I don't know and I couldn't care less.

Bug#468444: xwnc: Suggestions to improve description

2008-02-28 Thread Reuben Thomas
Package: xwnc
Severity: normal

Filing a bug is not overkill. The fact that many packages have unclear
descriptions (few as confusing as this one, though) is an indication
that Debian has many bugs, not that it's a problem. Users rely on
package descriptions to understand what the packages do.

Here's an improved English version of the description:

Xwnc is, like Xvnc, an X server that draws nothing on the screen,
but instead draws everything into pixmaps that, along with other
information, can be sent to a viewer, using a protocol similar to
VNC. FvwmAmetista is such a viewer that uses OpenGL (via nucleo)
to render the X desktop into a window of a 3D accelerated X
 server.

I'm not sure whether this removes all the confusion, but it's an
improvement.

Wow, how obnoxious!

My initial guess is this is actually a libmms bug, since mimms itself
doesn't do anything special, but it could be hard to track down without
knowing where it's dying for sure =(

I'll probably need someone to help debug this one.
