Bug#722124: ITP: python-dogpile.core -- dogpile lock, typically used as a component of a larger caching solution

2013-09-07 Thread Thomas Goirand
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Thomas Goirand

* Package name: python-dogpile.core
  Version : 0.4.1
  Upstream Author : Mike Bayer
* URL : https://pypi.python.org/pypi/dogpile.core

  Programming Lang: Python
Description : dogpile lock, typically used as a component of a larger
caching solution

Python dogpile.core lock allows a single thread to generate an expensive

 .
Dogpile is basically the locking code extracted from the Beaker package, for
 simple and generic usage.

Actually, (being a bit pedantic) you should use "<< X~", so backports
cannot satisfy the relation either. In this given case, I don't think
it will make a difference, but I believe it is a good habit to have.

Hi. Should these patches also include changes to the package
relantionship (depend/conflict/break), to ensure hurd machines upgrade
required packages together? Some of the changes (like the tmpfs
translation) seem to indicate that some newer package need to be
installed when the change is done.

Bug#722122: dpkg-dev: warn about syntax errors in debian/control (folded items)

2013-09-07 Thread Andreas Metzler
Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.17.1

Hello,

I have made an uploaded with folded Architecture line in
debian/control. I have since learned from debian policy that
Architecture may not be folded.

dpkg-dev simply ignored anything but the first line. I wish it had
erred out and told me that the files had an syntax error instead of
letting me upload the package and me wondering why half of the
autobuilders did not build a specific binary.

Bug#722121: ibus-setup does not work in Debian Sid (in a KDE desktop)

2013-09-07 Thread Trevor Davis
Package: ibus
Version: 1.5.3-5
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I'm running Debian Sid (ala Siduction) with a KDE desktop which was dist-
upgraded today. I installed ibus, ibus-pinyin, and ibus-xkbc with "apt-get
install ibus ibus-pinyin ibus-xkbc" which also installed a bunch of
dependencies. When I call ibus-daemon -v an applet shows up in Plasma
(presumably ibus-qt4) and when I left click I see my two normal keyboards but
when I right click and click Preferences in order to add pinyin capabilities I
get the following error:

ERROR:root:Could not find any typelib for Gtk
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/ibus/setup/main.py", line 29, in
from gi.repository import Gtk
ImportError: cannot import name Gtk

This is the exact same error I get if I try to run "ibus-setup". Is there some
kind of addition gtk dependency which needs to be added to the package
dependencies?

Thanks,

Trevor

2013-09-07 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor

Bug#720459: quiterss: Sometimes downloads the same article

QuiteRSS always downloads the whole feed with all messages in it so I
doubt if there is anything we can do about it here. From what I
understand this problem could happen when RSS feed (which is just an
XML file) is re-generated with any changes to items that you already
marked as read.

I'm aware of some feeds where every update changes subject (or body)
of the message so there is no way `quiterss` could identify them as
identical to the very similar (but not exactly the same) messages that
were previously read. Unfortunately all messages in such feeds always
appears as new/unread but that an indication of bug(s) in RSS
generation, not in `quiterss`.

Please feel free to discuss directly to upstream as we're unlikely to
change such behaviour here.

Also please advise if this bug could be closed. Thanks.

Bug#722113: libmenu-cache-dev: add conflict against libmenu-cache1-dev?

2013-09-07 Thread Bob Bib
Package: libmenu-cache-dev

Dear Maintainer,
here's a quote from the 'menu-cache' changelog:

IMHO, it's safer to add also
a conflicts / replaces entry against 'libmenu-cache1-dev'
for 'libmenu-cache-dev'.

links [1] and [2] do not appear to have any content, and [3] doesn't
look appropriate for debian's openssh-server, either in the chosen name
of the unit file (which i think is supposed to match the name in
/etc/init.d/) or in the declarations.

Can you provide a better unit file for debian?

Done that for fwrite.c, but there are other cases in the source.
Patch for fwrite.c attached, on top of the prvious: mendex-snprintf

If anyone can comment on that (review) that would be great, especially
the definition of
TAIL_LEN(x)
(returning two argumetns, the pointer and the remaining length, for
the first two arguments of snprintf).

Thanks

FYI: I have patched version of gnome-settings-daemon here :-)

So this may be another factor.

Also, keyboard configuration segfault bug is fixed by new gnome-desktop3

Bug#722109: drizzle FTBFS on Alpha due to unavailable systemtap-sdt-dev build-dep

Source: drizzle
Version: 1:7.2.3-2
Severity: normal

drizzle can't be built on Alpha (and most other Linux ports at debian-ports)
due to an unsatisfiable systemtap-sdt-dev build-dependency. I see that
systemtap-sdt-dev is not required on all the release arches and ask that
alpha also be excluded from requiring systemtap-sdt-dev in the source
build-deps in debian/control.

For me, such features should not be embedded into the core part of code
without consent. That sounds like good gnome-shell extension target.
Then it is opt-in feature and everyone should be happy.

Bug#722099: libkatepartinterfaces4: folded text does not unfold when clicking on the sidebar fold icon (using INI file)

I attach another patch to fix the minor bug about when folding a section,
the name of the next section was folded too:

[section1]

[section2]
key2=value2

When folding section1, it became like that:

[section1]
key2=value2

instead of:
-
[section1]
[section2]
key2=value2

So this patch fix that (along with the first bug about not being able to

I checked, no need. The tmpbuff used here is defined in the head
of the function as tmpbuff[4096], and the above lines are the only
lines writing to it.

So one
snprintf(tmpbuff, 4096, ...)
should be enough.

Thanks.

This is all beyond my knowledge, so the most I can do is just relay
messages back and forth between you and upstream if you have any
further questions...

Yep, built successfully [1] on barber, hence I think it's safe to say
that the bug is fixed (or that the original FTBFS issue isn't
reproducible anymore).

I'm currently preparting the evolution/evolution-data-server 3.8
transition.
One of the rdeps is evolution-mapi, which build-depends on samba4-dev.
Would be great having a working/installable samba4 package, so we can
actually build evolution-mapi.
Otherwise the only alternative I see for evolution-mapi is to remove it
from testing when starting the transition

Bug#722086: More suggested fixes from Ubuntu

2013-09-07 Thread Osamu Aoki
Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for patches.
0001-Simplify-dh_install-and-only-hide-ibus-setup-in-GNOM.patch
0002-Restore-disable-silent-rules.patch

I agree these as very good clean ups. Thanks.

0003-Drop-ibus-xx-setup-frequent-lang.patch.patch

But this core change proposal, I disagree (at least now as first glance).

First of all, it looks like ***working*** here in GNOME 3.8 :-)

I see "Show all input methods" at the bottom of list.
   ^^

> While GNOME and Unity users can use gnome-control-center for ibus
> preferences, I think users of other desktops may need to continue to

I agree. Hiding parts, I had some resentment. Your idea is good.

> I don't think ibus-xx-setup-frequent-lang.patch works since it's
> patching a gconf schema which isn't installed.

That was my initial reaction to this in FC19. But FC19 had nice hiding
and it is working here.

That is why I doubt your assessment of "patching a gconf schema".

Yes, the patch file contains a large patch to gconf schema XML in data.
But the patch file also contain 2 patches to python code in setup.

> If you depend on
> gsettings-desktop-schemas, perhaps you could use gsettings
> org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources if you want to
> rewrite the patch.

So this patch may have some legacy unused portion for our build for XML
or this XML may be used to update gsettings-desktop-schemas, but at
least small code patch in it is the one it counts and it seems working
here. Unless you tell me more or my test without this patch gives me
"Show all input methods" , I will keep this patch since it is in synch
with FC19.

I will check this later.

Bug#659191: kexec-tools: crashkernel boot messages not displayed, X11/gdm often not starting properly

2013-09-07 Thread Linus Lüssing
Hi Khalid,

I was now able to redo my tests with the same Laptop and nvidia
device. And with the 3.10 kernel and more up to date Debian
Sid packages in general.

Unfortunately it's still not really working. It behaves
differently, but still isn't usable:

With the Damn Small Linux mentioned in my previous email, I'm
always getting a black screen with an underscore. I don't even get
the scrambled colours of the desktop.

When rebooting my current, fine working 3.10 kernel with kexec and
this command [0], the following happens:

The screen is blck during the initrd phase, I don't see the usual
cryptsetup password prompt. After typing the password blindly the
system continues booting and after the initrd phase the terminal
with the boot log and process actually shows up. I suspect that
the nouveau kernel modules have reset something at the moment.

However when it then continues to start X, I only get a black
screen with a white underscore again. But hey, I'm additionally
getting a visible, interactive mouse cursor :)! So it looks like
nouveau resets something, at least more than the Intel driver, but
not enough. And/Or kexec does not reset enough.

I can switch back to the terminal and that one still looks fine,
switching back to X and it's still just black, the underscore and
mouse cursor.

Also restarting gdm3 from the terminal does not help. Using
--reset-vga does not help either.

Cheers, Linus

I don't think this bug has actually been fixed. If the culmus package
used to provide the files in question, simply removing it from the

Thanks for the patch.

Does this fix work for you? Seems fine here with a cursory test.

Since the File::Spec->catfile is a class method call, I don't think that
the "use File::Spec" is necessary here, or at the very least wasn't
necessary previously. I'm wondering if this is broken due to the recent
Perl 5.18 transition since it was working fine before that.

This was a known problem, and there is an initial patch in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68143

However, I have to say I couldn't reproduce it after fixing the
connection error. I've uploaded a patched package to
http://people.debian.org/~mbanck/telepathy-gabble_0.18.0-1.1_amd64.deb
maybe you can see whether you can still reproduce the disappearing User
names issue with this, as well as whether it fixes the authorization
error.

Bug#722103: sbuild: Pass --no-options to gpg when creating temporary archive key

2013-09-07 Thread Geoffrey Thomas

Package: sbuild
Version: 0.64.0-1
Tags: patch

Hi maintainer,

Jeffrey Hutzelman mentioned to me that `sbuild-update --keygen` was
creating ASCII-armored archive keys instead of a binary keyring, which
caused the process of signing the archive to fail. After some confusion on
my part because it totally works for me, we found that he had the armor
option set in his ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf, and that sbuild was respecting this
configuration file.

In order to get consistent scripted behavior out of the gpg command, you
need to pass --no-options. See also apt-key.

Very simple patch attached; you can also pull the single commit from the
gpg-no-options branch of https://github.com/geofft/sbuild if that's easier
. Jeff has confirmed that it fixes his problem.

Hi,

the patch from FD#68829 fixes it for me in wheezy (and I assume
jessie/sid, but I have not actually tested it on there), see the
attached adopted patch.

Unfortunately, squeeze doesn't appear to ship wocky-c2s-porter yet, so I
tried for some time unsuccessfully to backport the patch into
wocky-porter. I get Facebook to connect fine (by basically bypassing
the check_spoofing() code), but I don't see any contacts in UI contact
list (but I do see contacts leaving in the debug log and I can actually
start conversations if I know the right JID which carry over to the FB
web chat). Maybe this is unrelated, I have not really used empathy on

A look at shows that it was
part of wheezy but was removed after the freeze:

Packaging efforts that happen entirely outside the unstable/testing
distribution like this are pretty much useless for Debian. After all,
there are reverse dependencies that would benefit from being able to use
some of the provided libraries: The QEMU maintainer, for instance,
removed ceph support a year ago because that ceph package was not usable
then:

qemu (1.1.2+dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=low
  [...]
  * do not build-depend on ceph (librbd-dev librados-dev), since ceph is
having longstanding issues in wheezy.

If you consider your 8-week-old package (0.61.7-1) to be even remotely
fit for unstable, please upload.

Cheers,

Bug#722099: libkatepartinterfaces4: folded text does not unfold when clicking on the sidebar fold icon (using INI file)

2013-09-07 Thread Alexis M.
Package: libkatepartinterfaces4
Version: 4:4.10.5-2
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
Using KWrite and/or Kate to edit ini text files and using the folding
feature of these editor.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Open a INI file in Kate or KWrite.
Fold a section (not the first).
Try to unfold the folded section by clicking on the arrow icon on the
left sidebar, it will fold the section above the folded section
instead of unfolding the section next to the arrow icon.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
the click on the folded icon will fold the section above the folded
section.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
It should unfold the section next to the folded icon.

The only way to unfold the folded section is to use menus and unfold all top
level sections.
Restarting KWrite or Kate don't unfold the section as the fold state is saved.
So the folding feature is not really usable for these types of files.

However, I managed to correct this problem using the provided patch.
But there is still another minor bug, when folding a section, it fold the
section name of the next section. But at least, folded sections are unfoldable.

Bug#722097: xfce4-mailwatch-plugin: uses all available CPU while checking on slow links

2013-09-07 Thread Sebastian
Package: xfce4-mailwatch-plugin
Version: 1.1.0-5+b1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I am using the xfce4-mailwatch-plugin to check on POP3 and IMAP mailboxes
regularly (using a 10 minute interval) and I noticed that the plugin uses
up all available CPU time while checking mails.

In cases where the link is slow or the server connection times out, this
becomes a major annoyance on battery-powered devices, because this results
in a lot of CPU time burned - on fast links, it is barely noticeable.

"top" shows CPU usages of ca. 188% on my dual-core CPU, but I also noticed
that sometimes only one core is used up (ca. 99%) - I assume this happens
when only one of the servers times out and the other answers fast.

Please have a look into this and

Thank you in advance.

This bug should probably be reassigned to openmpi, it seems to break

Bug#722096: xapian-bindings: doc-base error for ruby-xapian

2013-09-07 Thread Cédric Boutillier
Source: xapian-bindings
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Every time a package updates doc-base data, I get the following error:

Processing 2 added doc-base files...
Error while merging /usr/share/doc-base/ruby-xapian with
/usr/share/doc-base/ruby-xapian-in: format html already defined.

The binary package ships both:

/usr/share/doc-base/ruby-xapian-in
/usr/share/doc-base/ruby-xapian

with exactly the same content.

I believe that is because the source package contains both
ruby-xapian.doc-base and ruby-xapian.doc-base.in in the debian/
directory.

Removing debian/ruby-xapian.doc-base from the source package solves the
problem.

Cédric

There are messages "Deprecated parameter: plm_rsh_agent" in the log, it
could be that the OMPI_MCA_plm_rsh_agent=/bin/false hack does no longer
work. I don't remember whether running the test suites without it
resulted in immediate crashes or hanging processes...

Hi,

I finally (!) got round to submitting this upstream, at [1], and the
comment so far is that the patch isn't appropriate. If you have any
further thoughts, could you comment on the upstream RT ticket?

Cheers,
Dominic.

Bug#687694: Close?

2013-09-07 Thread Emmanuel Bourg
Is this the right syntax for the break clause:

Breaks: jakarta-jmeter (<< 2.8-1),
jenkins-instance-identity (<< 1.3-1),
jglobus (<< 2.0.6-1),
libitext-java (<< 2.1.7-6),
libpdfbox-java (<< 1:1.8.2+dfsg-1),
voms-api-java (<< 2.0.9-1.1)

I listed only the package that were confirmed to break and required and
modification. I'm not sure about versions, should I use (<< X) where X
is the first version supporting Bouncy Castle >= 1.47, or should I use
(<= Y) where Y is the last version in testing compatible with Bouncy
Castle 1.44?

Unfortunetely, dspam being setgid, it can't produce coredump on segfault even
if coredump are enabled. It seems a call to prctl with option PR_SET_DUMPABLE
can remediate this but it means dspam would need to be recompiled.

Dear Maintainer,

I just had to rebuild my LDAP directory because I made the mistake of
trying to reindex my back_mdb data (after changing indexes in
slapd.conf). The file grew until it hit its limit; increasing the limit
did not solve this.

This issue seems to be known and solved in upstream:
http://www.openldap.org/lists/openldap-bugs/201209/msg00034.html

To get a fully stable back-mdb, you need OpenLDAP 2.4.36.

Sure, it's very old. Even if that was a long term support one.
Btw, Ceph was not part of Wheezy. Do you mean Jessie?

Ceph is maintained in the background. There's a more fresh version

Bug#722093: RFP: plinth -- web interface and framework

2013-09-07 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: plinth
  Version : git snapshot
  Upstream Author : James Vasile
* URL : https://github.com/jvasile/Plinth
* License : GNU Affero General Public License, Version 3 or later
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : web front end for administering every aspect of a Freedom
Box

The front end is an extensible web platform for forms and menus. It
allows authenticated users to fill out forms. The interface saves the
form data and from them generates configuration files for the various
services running on the box.

The interface is pluggable. Drop modules into place to add new
capabilities to Plinth and your Freedom Box. Replace existing modules
to get newer, better shinier functions. The modules will automatically
integrate into the existing menu system so you can control all of the
box's parts from one central location.

The web interface and framework is the web interface of the Freedombox,
and would be great to have in Debian proper. :)

Initial packaging is available from

> beeing detected at all in Thunar.

It seems that people is mixing the automount feature with the volume
disk feature. But, see the comments #7 and #8 of that bug, that's
exactly my problem.

"can't see removable devices" is probably a better description, like in
this ArchLinux forum thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=111867&p=1

But they use a weird workaround to avoid the problem.

> Is the mass storage device actually correctly detected by the kernel and
> udisks?

Yes, it is. At least udisks is receiving the notification via udev when
I plug the android phone:

javier@hogwarts:~$ udisks --monitor
Monitoring activity from the disks daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
added: /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/sdb
changed: /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/sdb
changed: /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/sdb

I can attach the "udevadm monitor --environment" logs if you want, but
they seem normal (and they are big). The kernel logs are also right, the
only missing lines are the corresponding ones to the mount syscall.

I managed to reproduce this on eder.d.o (mipsel) and on my laptop
(amd64). The test needs to be run several times for the hang to
happen.

The test that fails waits for asynchronous database event posted by
another thread.

I doubt this bug is specific to perl 5.18, so perhaps there is no need
to block the transition? Also, I uploaded the result from a successful
build to the archive.

Bug#721521: [Pkg-fonts-devel] Bug#721521: ITP: fonts-urw-base35 -- Set of the 35 PostScript Language Level 2 Base Fonts

2013-09-07 Thread Fabian Greffrath
Dear Kenshi Muto, Masayuki Hatta and Roland Rosenfeld,

I contact you, because you are the latest active maintainers of the
gsfonts and gsfonts-x11 packages, respectively.

As you may have seen already in #721521, I am going to upload the
fonts-urw-base35 packages that contains the latest update of upstream
author URW to the font set that is metric compatible to the Postscript
35 base set. Thus, it will replace the gsfonts package and provide a
transitional dummy package of that name. Furthermore, while at it, I am
going to merge the effort to make these fonts available to X11 from the
gsfonts-x11 package. Thus, this package will get replaced with a
transitional dummy packages as well.

Since these are firmally "your" packages, I'd like to make sure you are
informed about these consequences beforehand. Furthermore, I would
appreciate if you could acknowledge these changes or raise your
objections now, before it is probably a bit late.

Thank you very much for your replies!

Best regards,

- Fabian

Bug#695890: powertop: Fwd: [PATCH] embed self-contained javascript

2013-09-07 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Control: tag 695890 + patch

attached please find a patch to embed self-contained javascript, which i
i've already sent upstream:

 https://lists.01.org/pipermail/powertop/2013-September/000923.html

If this could be applied within the debian package, that would be great.

thanks,

--dkg
--- Begin Message ---
using self-contained javascript offers several improvements:

 * powertop html report can be viewed offline
 * less overall javascript code is loaded when online
 * no opportunity for report leakage or modification by third parties

These changes also make it simpler to update the html report when a
new section is added: just add a new entry to powertop.blocks
dictionary, with the section's human-readable string as its value.

Bug#705262: unsupportable

2013-09-07 Thread Bastian Blank
Control: severity -1 serious

The version 0.48 was removed from wheezy because it is unsupportable.
In the meantime this is _twenty_ versions behind the last release. This
means it is even less supportable.

Setting the bug to serious, as unsupportable is RC by the current
release policy.

If you don't intend to actually maintain ceph, please orphan the
package. Otherwise I may do a NMU with the latest version 0.68 in the

In sbuild I was working around it by explicitly flushing the output
stream. I've tested by commenting out the explicit flushing and doing
a few builds. Output does not appear to be unduly buffered, so it's
possible that this issue has been resolved somehow. However, the
perl code has changed slightly in the meantime, and I'm now using a
newer system, so it's possible that isn't simply not manifesting with
the setup I have. There's certainly no lag/choppiness in the live
build output.

In the absence of being able to reproduce with the code which previously
demonstrated the problem, I'd say this could be closed. If anyone can
properly reproduce it, it can be reopened.

Roger

o_O Good catch! I would have sweared that I have found and fixed all
glitches like this so far.

Maybe commited, but not yet pushed. Please do so.

No, not yet. I admit, I am a bit puzzled about that as well. I have
included them in every mail in CC so far and did not get a single
reaction yet - neither positive nor negative. Will try again in a
minute...

sadly for now I've postsuper'ed -r ALL emails for now.

But I installed libdspam7-dbg, relink postfix to dspam and I will need
to wait for another email to come to mailman in order reproduce it.

But could you offer me another reliable way to make Dspam dumps its core
somewhere automatically instead of this situation where I'm waiting for
hours through ssh with $ gdb ?

thx

Bug#722090: slapd: slapindex on back_mdb directory expands without limit, leading to failure

2013-09-07 Thread Jeremy Brandon Roman
Package: slapd
Version: 2.4.31-1+nmu2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I just had to rebuild my LDAP directory because I made the mistake of trying
to reindex my back_mdb data (after changing indexes in slapd.conf). The file
grew until it hit its limit; increasing the limit did not solve this.

This issue seems to be known and solved in upstream:
http://www.openldap.org/lists/openldap-bugs/201209/msg00034.html

Some solution to this should be backported, as using slapindex and mdb is
a reasonable configuration that should work, especially on a stable Debian
release.

I wouldn't worry about that. Users likely want to be using the latest
kernel anyway, and if they for some reason aren't and submit a bug
report about modules not working, they can be instructed to either
reboot or install the linux-headers for their specific kernel version.

> Sitting on the outside here, I am puzzled to see this belief that Debian

This isn't at all about modifying the kernel package itself. It is
about building kernel modules available in many separate packages.

Best wishes,
Mike

Honestly, I haven't checked that yet. But I wouldn't be surprised to
find some subtle differences. Actually, fixing some of the metrics to be
more compatible to the original base fonts was the very reason for URW
releasing the update.

That's the price of technological progress, if you are asking me. :)

Hi, you don't see something like the following at the top of the
output for each source package?

diffstat for quilt-0.60 quilt-0.60

 .pc/.quilt_patches |1
 .pc/.quilt_series |1

+++ quilt-0.60/debian/changelog 2013-09-05 12:23:58.0 +
[snip]

apt-listdifferences should be calling debdiff with the --diffstat
option, which generates that.

I wonder if there is an issue with coloring that may be masking that.
Can you try setting color=False in /usr/bin/apt-listdifferences?

Also make sure "debdiff --diffstat" by itself works as expected on your machine.

Best wishes,
Mike

Bug#721677: gnome-user-share: Personal File Sharing GUI not accessable

2013-09-07 Thread Mauro Fontana
I think I might be having this bug too.

Don't know how much info I can provide.

I'm running an amd64 Jessie destribution. Fresh installed in June (after
the release of Wheezy).

The command gnome-file-share-preferences (or something like that) doesn't
exist. In another machine running Wheezy it lunches from the applications
menu. By looking at the desktop file of the app I saw it points the above
command and when I try to run that in Jessie, it doesn't exist.

Or something has changed from the wheezy version up to now or this is a
serious bug, which is preventing file-sharing at all.

Don't know how much debugging info can I provide as there seems to be no
runtime error, but a missing executable!

Cheers

Symbols for libdspam7-drv-hash are found in libdspam7-dbg. Could you install
it and give me stacktrace you get with it?

Bug#722089: rectangle select slows gimp

2013-09-07 Thread David Farrier

Package: gimp
Version: 2.8.2-2

The gimp slows noticably when I use the rectangle select tool. On my 1.9
GHz Pentium 4 machine, it is quite responsive doing tasks like changing
the color balance of a 10 megapixel photo, but after selecting a region
using the rectangle tool, it slows markedly. All gimp functions I have
tried get slow, for example, opening a menu takes upwards of 5 seconds.
Cursor movement remains responsive, although it can take a few seconds for
the cursor symbol to update. Examining the running processes, 'gimp' looks
okay but 'x' continuously uses about 85% of the CPU. Memory use looks
okay. If I switch to another application, for example LibreOffice, that
application is responsive.

The gimp remains slow and x remains a CPU hog until I close the image or I
dismiss the selection using the 'select none' command.

One peculiar aspect, xcf files seem to preserve whatever causes the
problem. If I save a file while the gimp is slow, then the gimp will slow
again when I reopen the file. To demonstrate this, I created the attached
example by opening the gimp, and created an empty image with the letter
template. To make the image a little more interesting, I used the gradient
tool to apply a conical gradient. The gimp showed almost no hesitation to
any of these commands. Then I selected a small region with the rectangle
tool and the gimp slowed. I patiently did a crop to selection to make the
image smaller for your convenience. Then saved and closed the gimp.

Then I opened the gimp with this small file. The gimp immediately becomes
slow. Patiently open a 10 megapixel JPEG, whose window happens to cover
the small image, and the gimp becomes responsive. Bring the window with
the small image forward, and the gimp slows. Issue the 'select none'
command and the gimp becomes responsive.

Problem started when I upgraded from Debian 6.6 to 7.1. With 6.6, the gimp
was responsive even with multiple ten-megapixel images open with multiple
regions selected.

I am running Debian 7.1 with pretty much standard desktop installation
except xfce instead of gnome.
