Re: user shutdown

2009-03-21 Thread Jerome BENOIT

Hello,

Have you try to play with /etc/shutdown.allow (shutdown(8))

Otherwise, I expected to do what you want from

System->Preferences->Main_Menu

but there is not item corresponding to the `Shutdown Down...' button,
a lest on my Lenny box.

I am not very familiar with the Configuration Editor,
but I would look there as well.

Jerome

BUG: ... kernel NULL pointer reference ... udevadm timeout

2009-03-21 Thread Tapani Tarvainen
Any ideas where to look for when freshly-installed (Lenny) machine
freezes during boot with

[ 30.755158] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0170
...
udevd-event[1084]: run_program: '/bin/sh' abnormal exit

(here the machine freezes for three minutes)

After the udevadm settle timeout, the events queue contains:

742: /devices/pnp0/00:14"

done(timeout)

After that boot proceeds normally.
This is perfectly repeatable, happens every time.

How can I determine what that "/devices/pnp0/00:14" is?

/dev/.udev/failed contains

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 2009-03-22 07:18
\x2fdevices\x2fpci:00\x2f:00:00.0 -> /devices/pci:00/:00:00.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 2009-03-22 07:18 \x2fdevices\x2fplatform\x2ffloppy.0
-> /devices/platform/floppy.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 2009-03-22 07:18 \x2fdevices\x2fplatform\x2fvesafb.0
-> /devices/platform/vesafb.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2009-03-22 07:18 \x2fdevices\x2fpnp0\x2f00:11 ->

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2009-03-22 07:18 \x2fdevices\x2fpnp0\x2f00:14 ->
/devices/pnp0/00:14

but that doesn't help me much.

More details:

This is a fresh Lenny install, uname -a says
Linux seita 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Fri Mar 13 18:08:45 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
The hardware is rather ancient (HP Omnibook 4100) but up to now
(running Fedora 3) it's been rock solid.

I've tried removing the removable pieces of hardware, namely floppy
and network card, and disabling acpi, to no avail.

Here's part of dmesg leading to the freeze:

Well, this morning's kernel upgrade is what triggered it, but I think
the real cause was something updated earlier, and this was the first
reboot. There are 2 servers, one got the kernel update and the other
didn't. But they both hit the same problem on reboot.

A lot of the talk I found on google was from last fall. The workaround
was posted last night.

It's (almost) for sure something to do with grub 2. It happens after the
MBR is processed and the 'menu' is read from /boot/grub, but before
anything in the root filesystem is read. And the workaround involves
editing the menu data in grub's memory and entering a couple commands in
grub's shell.

I haven't been able to duplicate it yet on a machine on the bench...

Which timezone does the cron use in Debian?

2009-03-21 Thread Patrik Hasibuan

Dear my friends

I've the scheduled task in cron to shutdown my debian server at 17:15.

But my debian box does shutdown at 14:00. Lookslike it uses another timezone.
Because if I do this way:
"
debby:~# date
Sun Mar 22 07:36:47 CIT 2009
"
and the date and time is correct. They're the same as the bios (cmos) clock
shows.

How can I see which timezone the crond in my Debian-Box uses? And how to set
the cron should just uses the BIOS (CMOS) clock? I want the cron uses UTC not
the GMT.

Please tell me.

Thank you very much in advance.

One serious flaw in his article is that he doesn't consider the case of
users who have full passwordless sudo enabled for their normal user
account (some_user ALL = NOPASSWD: ALL). I know this is not the
safest, most paranoid setup, but I suspect that it's fairly common.
Moen argues that:

"Last, you say, surely sysadmins stupid enough to take dangerous
actions as root must be becoming the norm instead of a rarity, given
Linux's current explosive growth — thus undermining the whole security
model. This, too, is true — but there are powerful forces at work to
educate new sysadmins: The administrative tools, themselves, tend to
stress that the root account is dangerous and should be used minimally
and carefully, as does Linux's new-user documentation. Also, those
sysadmins resistant to learning this message via such avenues
inevitably learn it the hard way, by destroying or crippling their
systems repeatedly — until they learn. In that regard, viruses do not
even stand out from the general likelihood of repeatedly destroying
one's system, until one learns to not do unwise things as root. The
difference between "hostile" executables (such as viruses) and others
is academic, when a root-account user can already shoot off his/her
foot or other vital parts, with one of myriad, brief commands. Put the
other way, the same survival skills by which you, as a novice sysadmin,
will cease destroying your system directly will also, more generally,
dissuade you from doing unwise things as root, thereby incidentally
keeping viruses and their kin off your system.

Or, put a third way, the Linux community would see no real distinction
between novices who (as root) infect their systems (if this should ever
happen to significant numbers of them), and those who accidentally type
some variation on "rm -rf /" (delete all files) while logged in as
root: Both are a result of inexperience and lack of caution. In both
cases, education, attention, and experience are a 100% effective cure."

But this equivalence between insecure systems and those likely to fall
victim to an accidental "rm -rf /" breaks down for the above case,
since accidents become much less likely, but a virus can still do
whatever it wants by prefacing its actions with 'sudo'.

clamd and freshclam won't run

2009-03-21 Thread John

I'd appreciate a clue as to what's going on: since today's update
(sid on two IBM laptops), neither clamd nor freshclam will start. The error
message changes according to the directory from which the command
/etc/init.d/clamav-daemon or /etc/init.d/clamav-freshclam is
given. Here's a sample:

root@/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/clamav-daemon restart
Stopping ClamAV daemon: clamd.
Starting ClamAV daemon: clamd /sbin/start-stop-daemon: Unable to chdir() to=
'/etc/init.d' (No such file or directory)
 failed!

root@/usr/sbin# /etc/init.d/clamav-daemon restart
Stopping ClamAV daemon: clamd.
Starting ClamAV daemon: clamd /sbin/start-stop-daemon: Unable to chdir() to=
'/usr/sbin' (No such file or directory)
 failed!

I'm stumped. I'd worry less, except that a third laptop, also updated today,
does NOT show this problem.

Help would be gratefully accepted.

P.S.

A second problem appeared when I tried to send this message via mutt: Here's
the error message:

Hmm... so they have different VGs but `vgscan' only shows one of
the two?
That's odd. How are the drives connected? What does "pvscan -vvv" say?

FWIW, here's how I'd ideally do the replacement:
1 - plug in the new drive. Let's say it appears as /dev/sdb
2 - partition it with `fdisk' so I have 1 large partition /dev/sdb1.
3 - pvcreate /dev/sdb1
4 - vgextend VG /dev/sdb1 (where VG is your old volume group name)
5 - pvmove /dev/sda1 (where /dev/sda1 is the physical volume on the old drive)
6 - vgreduce VG /dev/sda1
7 - pvremove /dev/sda1
8 - remove old drive

Food for thought.. Never imagined what I'd been doing all these years
might not work .. or worse, break something, depending on the context.

Well, you said "but in practice, 64-bit is required", so if your
"practice" is to use a 64bit system, then indeed your statement is true,
tho vacuously so.

But I was wrong about it. How does a bigmem kernel address the full

Via PAE, AFAIK,

In practice, I think most people would agree that the PAE method is
unsatisfactory. Okay, change "required" to "cleaner". 64-bit is a much
"cleaner" implementation. In my opinion. It's only important if it
touches many things, affects how you use it. If you "just 'aptitude

it doesn't affect you in practice, so it's not important. So I was wrong.

Well, if you look in /etc/rcS.d, you'll see all the initscripts that get
run prior to / being mountd rw. For example, one is setting the system
clock. Another is mounting the kernel virt fs.

On my particular box, I can probably go ahead and remount / rw from the
sh prompt without any preliminary steps. However, I don't know what the
OP's box is like.

You might want to look at the MySQL error log - should give you
something more meaningful than the system log.

Note sure of the location of this in a default Debian installation as I
always use my own highly customised LAMP stack.

Look in the MySQL data directory (wherever that might be -
/var/lib/mysql is MySQL AB's own default) and have a look in the log
file there which will be based on your host name with a .err suffix.

The .err file has always got me out of trouble before.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

FWIW, I find that running Lenny on a 64MB machine is bearable but
slowish, and Etch was already "too slow" on a 32MB machine. So make
sure you have enough RAM.
For very simple uses, it works with less RAM, but as soon as you need to
"apt-get install" or "apt-get upgrade" the memory limit becomes severe.

Bridging with firestarter and dhcp3-server.

2009-03-21 Thread Daryl Styrk

I'm attempting to bridge wlan0 with eth0. I've done this successfully
in the past with firestarter and dhcp3-server. However I'm running into
some issues trying to set this up now.

What I have done in the past is set eth0 static, and enabled internet
connection sharing in firestarter. Which ends up with the following
configuration files.

cat /etc/network/interfaces

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0

iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

auto eth0

$ cat /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf
# DHCP configuration generated by Firestarter
ddns-update-style interim;
ignore client-updates;

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option routers 192.168.0.1;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option domain-name-servers 10.0.1.1;
option ip-forwarding off;
range dynamic-bootp 192.168.0.100 192.168.0.254;
default-lease-time 21600;
max-lease-time 43200;
}

After a restart of networking, firestarter, and dhcp3-server all was
well. This has worked on 3 separate instances.

However, now after restarting all services and attempting to request an
address on eth0 from another machine it fails with "No working leases in
persistent database - sleeping." I can see the interface eth0 here on
the laptop and while requesting the address the lights are not flashing
like they usually would which leads me to believe the bridge/dhcp server
isn't working.

I'm a bit lost where to start, I've looked through the logs for any
failurs, errors etc.

# grep error /var/log/messages

I have no idea about segfaults. I've never encountered one that I was
aware of. I have since restarted everything again after finding these
in the logs to see if it would be reproduced, but they were not.

It has its advantages and disadvantages, yes. I haven't noticed
a performance penalty, but I haven't tried to measure it either. As for
using a 64bit kernel with my 32bit userspace: everytime I tried, I found
out something doesn't work with it. First it was 32bit ekiga didn't
work with a 64bit video driver; then it was 32bit wpa-supplicant didn't
work with a 64bit wifi driver; last I tried it was uswsusp which failed
for similar reasons.

concern about the state of Debian

2009-03-21 Thread ghe
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I've been using Debian on my servers, desktops, and laptops for several
years. This morning, there was an update for my main server (lenny
amd64); I ran it and rebooted, like I have hundreds of times before, and
I got to spend 3 hours finding a way around grub's saying, "error:
initrd - unknown command" to get back online.

A few months ago, udev started replacing /dev/tape, the name expected to
be a link to the main tape device, with a directory. The Debian
maintainer said, "mt will need to be fixed, /dev/tape/ is the standard
for Linux system. If you disagree, feel free to discuss this with the
upstream maintainer." Of course I disagree. I replaced the directory and
made my backups work.

The nagios3 package won't uninstall because the prerm shell script has a
trivial syntax error (missing 'then' after an 'if') that would have been
detected instantly if it had ever been run. There've been bugs filed
against this; as part of my own filing, I submitted a fixed script. The
bug's still open.

My servers are still broken -- they wouldn't boot after a power failure.
All google found for me found was people saying "dunno", talk about the
Debian bug report on this, and (finally) a workaround from a Brad
Rogers, I think, that got them to boot from the grub command line.

Debian stable used to be completely reliable. Anybody have any idea
what's going on?

Workaround link:
http://osdir.com/answers/debian/20294-grub-failure-after-recent-dist-upgrade.html

You might want to print this on a piece of paper and hang it on the wall
in the server room.

Do you have an ATI card? My experience with the linux driver from
ati.amd.com is generally better than xorg out-of-the-box for dual
monitors. Just remember to use aticoncfig, aticonfig -h really helps
with available options.

Good luck.

Shouldn't..

Why would it be "in trouble"?

Their website seems to be down (atm) but it's all still working for me.

Hello, do all the list member one last favor and don't top post.

I had this issue with xinerama. It may depand on the card and driver you are
using (ati and nvidia must be configured using their config tools)

may be your xinerama configuration is for the local user, but I'ld bet it's
because you're using ati or nvidia

I don't remember the exact syntax. I think it was something like
usb_storage.delay_use=0 but rootdalay does the same. you can set it to 6 or
7 if you are unpatient.

It's not working in 2.6.28 because the delay_use option vanished I guess. So
may be you can stick to rootdelay

If the disk's internal block relocation scheme lets bad blocks through
to badblocks(8) then the disk is already really badly damaged. The disk
reports a relocation count through smart. See previous reply for how to
access this information. However your error does sound like something is
physically wrong with the disk.

I upgraded to awesome 3.2-1 now and though I still have the problem sometimes,
it seems to be less often than before...

Just so it can be Googled, I had a problem with awesome
E: awesome: main:428: cannot open display
that was caused by having an empty ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua file (only a
comment for reference) which didn't break 2.3.3-1 but did the 3.2 versions
(probably because of switching to lua for config).

Streaming Video from a Debian box

2009-03-21 Thread Kent West
Do I understand that there's no pre-packaged Debian solution for
streaming videos from the Debian/apache box to other clients, similar to
how YouTube streams videos?

I found Icecast, but the official site indicated it's an audio streamer
only, although I saw a reference or two elsewhere about it possibly
streaming theora files. (Which would work, if I can convert my
Mac-generated .mp4 file into theora. (I only used the Mac for its iMovie
app; openmovieeditor crashed on me, and seemed ... "weak".))

I also found Apple's Darwin, but that just seems .., tainted ,..
somehow, and I'm not sure it would work anyway.

So, what's the solution for setting up my own Youtube-like service on my
Debian box?

Thanks!

[long] UML hangs

2009-03-21 Thread Angelin Lalev
Greetings,

I'm experimenting with UML on Debian 5.0. In the virtual machine I run
debian 5.0 too.
I managed to get it to work. Well, sort of, because after 1-2 minutes
after I log on with

some details below.

I start the whole thing with:

(prizm.rootfs is "sparse", filesystem is ext3fs)

I went ahead and installed the 64 bit version. I'm actually very happy
at the performance.

I see the difference while running Amarok, then loading up some pages
within IceW along with pulling in email and I don't get the audio
"studder" I did under the 32 bit version.

Well done.

Well, once you're root (with init=/bin/sh), you remount / rw. If you
have a non-traditional / setup, one possibility is to run each of the
initscripts in /etc/rcS.d with the "start" parameter, in numerical
order, until / is mounted rw.

Why would a package version be in 'testing' on the mirror yet still in

I'm a DD and would be happy to help out in this regard - I spoke to Matt

as you say, it was down to licensing/legal issues.

Hi Emanoil,

Yes, I'm using 2.6.26. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think
usb-storage must be loaded from the initrd image, since filesystems are
checked before / is mounted. If that's the case, I don't know how to
pass it the delay_use parameter.

For the moment, I have added a rootdelay=10 option to the
kernel boot line, but I will try 2.6.28 as soon as it becomes available
in sid. Thank you all for the feedback.

Cheers,
Davide

Assuming that some piece of software is DFSG-Free, the only reason it would
not be included is because no one has stepped up to maintain a package for
it. Again, assuming it's DSFG-Free, there would be no obstacle to it being

It's set to 5sec by default. I didn't look for such an option in 2.6.28, but
as delay_use is doing nothing I assume it was either removed or replaced.

Alex, thanks for explaining. I've never heard something about m-a - I'm not
that debianized. I installed it and build dummy debian packages just to
satisfy the package dependencies.

I can hear sound now. Thanks to your help and the help of the developers!

What I did is try the different switches and plug the jack in different
outputs. So I finally found the perfect combination.

Actually there are 5 outputs: 3 for (front/surround/subwoofer) + 1 lineout +
1 headphones.

I was expecting to get something on lineout. it turned to be the front
output + Analog loopback 1 should be muted (I think exactly this kept me
from hearing anything)

Now the only problem I have is that I must set volume (all master/pcm/front)
to 100% to hear anything on my old maranz amplifier. I've tried with
different inputs on the amp and different cable. I also have to increase
the volume on the amplifier to 50% to hear that loud as it is normally (or
with other input sources) at about 10%.

I have had the same problem when connecting the 2nd monitor to my notebook.
>From the notebook without 2nd monitor it sounds great, but with 2nd monitor
attached it sounds like 10% from what was before.
I have experienced this with kernel 2.6.26 on the notebook and on this PC
I'm using 2.6.28.8.

Hardware engineers said it's hard to find out what exactly is the problem
(they should disamble everything and measure the voltage and power to find
out). They said new snd devices have different impedance (whatever it may
mean) so it's expected to set all volume to almost max.

I'm thinking that it could be also a bug in the hda-intel/-hdmi driver. As
when I don't compile snd-usb-audio it sounds great (this I've tried with
2.6.20/24/26)

So, since I'm having this notebook and jumped to 2.6.2+ I hear music in bad
quality on an excellent amplifier and boxes only because my notebook and pc
have intel sound cards - should I throw them away or buy an additional
soundcard, or may be an extra mixer (preamp), or install windows? It's
really odd!

Is it the manufacturers pushing us to upgrade to new hardware, or is it just
a software somehow bug related to intel and may be additional snd-usb ?

I'll be greatfull for any useful answers!

Thanks

If you still have problems, you may need to set "CC=gcc-4.1" for the

Did that and it solved the problem. Thanks (again! ;-) ) a lot!

For those who may not know why this worked...

~$ ls -l /usr/bin/gcc

~$ ls -l /usr/bin/gcc*

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 239000 2009-01-02 03:16 /usr/bin/gcc-4.3

As I understand it, specifying CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.1 forces the build
environment to use the chosen version of GCC, ignoring the default of
/usr/bin/gcc.

This got me as well when I was experimenting with VMWare Server/Client
Tools and Lenny, still does on occasion. *grin*

One other thing, the client tools for VM 2.0... One of the more
important modules won't compile with the kernel shipped with Lenny
(vsock = VM communication interface socket). Search around (I don't
recall the exact URL where I found it, I think it was on the Ubuntu
forums) for vmware-config.pl.patch and vmware-config-tools.pl.patch, you
will need them to get that module compiled. The VM will run without it,
but it won't run as well.

And if you find a better way to access the server under Linux that that
$%#$^%! web UI crap, please let me know!!!

Good grief, since when has wikipedia become the ultimate resource. Do you

Naturally any of this is opinion on both sides. It isn't really possible
for me to give data that shows something doesn't exist. And, you have
no reason to believe me or anyone else but will you please review this
article by Rick Moen, he makes a cogent argument.

http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/index.php?page=virus

If after reviewing it you still think you are correct, aside from possible
semantic differences about the definition of virus, cone back and I
suppose we can try to discuss further or agree to disagree. Otherwise, I
ask that people please stop stating that there are linux virus in the wild
in a thread that involves inexperienced users. The only people who have an
interest in the FUD are those who stand to profit by selling software for
Linux virus catching and removal and I am not accusing you of that. (Note
I didn't say not to run a virus checker on a mail server in a network with
Windows clients, our issue is with Linux virus.)

You will note that Rick's page is current, last modified 2009-02-16.
Naturally, current doesn't signify correctness but, in my opinion, it is
better than the page poster Celejar suggested which is from 2000 and I
don't remember any spread of "Bliss" since that time.

I know this is one month old, but, just in case you didn't figure it
out, did you install the Guest Additions?

How do I get (easy) the version of the kernel. It seems that the
difference between both versions is not shown in

uname -a

You are right. Yesterday, I performed manual update on my home server via

aptitude update
aptitude upgrade

and haven't payed attention.
As I was reading the reply to my message today, synaptic kicked in and
downloaded list of updates, including the new kernel.

Only if you use the same architecture and distribution.

Looks like the one with the older kernel does not have security updates
enabled, or you have not rebooted since the kernel update.

How do the respective /etc/apt/sources.list files look?

default kernel of 5.0 distribution

2009-03-21 Thread Angelin Lalev
Hi, shouldn't the compilation date of default debian kernel be the
same on all debian installations.

I have machine which says 10 Jan 2009 and I have a machine which says 13 Mar.
The both machines are P4 with 686 kernels.

Lets have a look at your /boot/grub/device.map

I didn't look at that, but now when I try to mount /dev/sda1 it's
telling me it is an invalid filesystem. Fdisk shows nothing now.

This gets more frustrating as it goes along.

Hey, man! Think positively :)
We are thinking about you!
It is Friday, have a beer :)

Maybe you should look for that partitioning utility on vendor web site?
Maybe the HDD should be pre-partitioned with that util before any OS
installation?

I've had several beers dealing with this thing already. A few more
sounds good.

I'll try that Mark. Stranger things have happened.

Thanks,
Mike

It was defiantly the brewskis that did the trick. Lenny is finally
installed along with GRUB.

In preparation to get the /boot/grub/device.map I could not mount the
HD. I did an fdisk -l and didn't see anything abnormal. I started fdisk,
and then I saw something different. I didn't document the exact message
as I didn't know at the time that would be the cure. The message was
something along the lines the drive could not be read as it did not have
a valid partition table that fdisk recognized. I continued in fdisk and
did 'o create a new empty DOS partition table', wrote the changes and
exited fdisk.

After this, I tried an amd64 netinst CD (previously I was using DVD #1).

The installation went as you would expect, including GRUB. No issues at all.

The only thing I can figure, is somehow the 'utility' partition that
Dell had put on the HD made the HD partially inaccessible to the Debian
Installer. Maybe it had some strange partition table, hidden or
something. Again, I don't know for certain this was the case, but that
is the only thing I did differently other than using the netinst which
*shouldn't* have made any difference.

Thanks to all for your help. Hopefully if someone else runs into this,
this might help them.

Thanks,
Mike
