Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

 1. I prefer to have Select windows when the mouse moves over them (or
focus-on-hover), so my mouse is all over the place. I rarely close a
window, but i do maximize and minimize allot.

I understand that this is a relatively common preference, but it's only
common amongst highly technical and sophisticated users. I'm glad to
retain it as something an expert can enable (yay FLOSS :-)) but it won't
be the Ubuntu default for the foreseeable future, and therefor can't
easily inform our planning.

 2. well..not *allot* of accidental closes, but enough to get me to pay
more attention to what I am clicking. I do however (even now):

  - maximize when i want to actually minimize
  - minimize when trying to maximize

Yes, I think this is a very valid concern. The use of the same styling /
colour for both max and min buttons means one has to pay closer
attention than usual. The pared back nature of the iconography compounds
the problem.

This happens mostly because i use Lucid at home and Hardy at work. We
will continue to use Hardy until it is no longer supported. We try to
avoid changing things in the workplace that don't *really* need changing
 (saves time and money).

If we stick with a theme approach in Lucid that is foundational for
future work, then a backport to current maintained releases would be
appropriate, making it easier for people to keep a consistent portfolio
of machines.

 Hope this helps a bit!

Yes, thank you.

Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-26 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
On 25/03/10 22:25, Atel Apsfej wrote:
Good, finally some guidance. You shouldn't wait for people to think up
data products on their own, that risks people spinning their wheels
creating data that gets discarded because it doesn't meet your
definition and leads to people feeling they are being ignored.

We should learn from any data that's presented. If someone comes up with
interesting data, we should gather what insight we can from it. And I
would be cautious to define in advance the set of things that might
influence us. In my experience, inspiration and caution can come from
unpredictable sources, and quite usefully so.

You and the design team are the only group in a position define what is
acceptable data in your decision-making process. Putting forward some
questions you want answered like you did above is helpful.

OK, fair enough. In future, I'll be quicker to outline things that
*might* be interesting, and encurage the team to do the same, but will
still encourage folks to be inventive with their research and analysis.
Otherwise we're not really crowdsourcing insight.

  But you could
go further, and articulate a framework by which questions can be
proposed by externals, accepted by the design team as important to the
design process, and then answered with an acceptable data collection
 methodology.

There are certainly some questions that could definitively be answered
with a single data set. We could keep an eye out for those. But they are
relatively special. In this case, I can't think of a single data set
that would be definitive. But that's why I'd prefer to leave the floor
open to folks to suggest ones that might.

If you do not articulate a data feedback framework that is acceptable to
the design team then how is anyone suppose to know what you think is and
is not acceptable? If you don't have a process by which people can
propose questions worth answering with data, how do people know what to
 collect data on?

Collect data on what's interesting to you. Most of us do this because
it's interesting, and we like both the company (that's you ;-)) and the
domain. I can't guarantee that any contribution will make it into
Ubuntu, whether it be a patch or a translation or a package or an idea.
But they all make it richer, one way or another. And work that doesn't
get picked up here is still part of the commons and may have an impact
elsewhere.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evolution

- evolution in its current version in lucid does not support fullscreen
functionality.
- there is nowhere i can set the evolution window to fullscreen.
- this is very disappointing on a 10 display, yet easy to fix.
-
- in fullscreen, one could also enable a feature to dock a contact list
- empathy style, to enable either starting an IM or eMail conversation
- with the contacts registered there..
-
- since communication is of paramount importance in this new social

-
- IM Audio/Video Call, Microblogging and eMail
-
- obviously, Gwibber supports microblogging, empathy carries the IM

[Bug 421212] Re: gdm ignores keyboard layout selection for variants

2010-03-26 Thread Shimi Chen
I had a problem of the USA keyvoard re-appearing on every boot along with my
chosen layouts(usa altgr and israel).
So at every boot I had to remove it from Preferences-Keyboard.

I followed advice here, removing dmrc, and %gconf.xml.

Also edited /etc/default/console-setup as advised on one of the duplicates of
this.
to show:
XKBMODEL=pc105
XKBLAYOUT=us,il
XKBVARIANT=altgr-intl,
XKBOPTIONS=grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll

And now on every boot I *only* have the standard USA keyboard.
Clicking on Reset to Defaults in Keyboard Preferences changes to my
preferred setting(us algr-intl and israel), without the standard USA(exactly as
I want it to be).

This reverts on every boot so I have to go to keyboard preferences and reset to
defaults every time I log in.
Apply system-wide doesn't help either.

I am using Karmic 64, gdm version 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1(latest from official
repo)

[Bug 535097] Re: Power Manager Brightness not clickable

2010-03-26 Thread bbordwell
** Summary changed:

- Power Manager Brightness Applet not working
+ Power Manager Brightness not clickable

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

- ubuntu 10.04 lucid alpha 3
+ Ubuntu 10.04 lucid
package: Power Manager Brightness Applet 2.29.91 (in Gnome-Power-Manager)

- The Applet may be added properly to the dock. Upon click, the slider
- opens but (a) does not show the correct current brightness (always on
- max) and (b) is not always showing up below the applets icon but on the
- upper left corner of the screen. Pressing anywhere on the slider or
- buttons does not change anything but makes the slider disappear.
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ right click on a panel and press add to panel. add brightness applet
+ Click on the new applet to show the slider, now try to move the slider using
a mouse click.
+ The slider simply vanishes.

- Setting the brightness with the keyboard commands works fine, though,
- the notifications on the changes are also correct.
+ Setting the brightness with the keyboard commands or with mouse wheel
+ works fine though.

Re: [Bug 532633] Data that would be interesting

2010-03-26 Thread jgv
If there is no conspiracy, it seems like a desperate act of the
designers to let the community swim in the unknown and then drop some
variables just a few weeks before the final release of a LTS instead of
a well planned, designed and methodical justified inquiry.

Yes this is one of the fundamental communication breakdowns between the
closed door design team and the external community. Shuttleworth and
the design team want data.. but they haven't communicated what that
means. Why hasn't that happened? Is the team concerned that the
passionate minority with game the system and heavily bias the data that
is being collected? There hasn't been a general data collecting
methodology articulated for any of the experimental design decisions.
This, more than any individual design decision, is the fundamental
breakdown in communication which risks hardening passionate contributors
in the Ubuntu community against Canonical in leading this work.

Atel, there is no conspiracy involved, nobody is afraid that data would
be biased, because it's clear that all data is somehow biased and will
need to be evaluated in that light. Nevertheless, data would be interesting.

I haven't said what data in particular, because I thought it better to
let people invent for themselves what might be a relevant study. If I
said I want data on X Y and Z we'd get into a long argument about
whether that's the relevant thing. I'd rather folks here had responded
by saying cool, here's some data I gathered.

Since that hasn't happened, some things I'd be interested in:

 - where does the average mouse rest? i.e., when it's not being used,
where is the mouse, usually? Think of a long term heat map of mouse
locations, over a few hundred desktops and a few weeks. That would be
interesting. Lots of people have said My mouse is generally near the
left because there's so much else there. others have said The
scrollbars on the right mean my mouse is hanging out there. Data would
be useful.

 - are there accidental clicks on the close button in the new location?
We know that the new location has lots going on around it. Are people
accidentally clicking the wrong thing?

 - does it take longer to click it in the new location, once one is
moving with intent in the right direction? We know that the fact that
there's a lot around the target means finer motor control is required,
and we know that generally means slower, more careful, more irritating
movements. But is that actually measurably observed?

Those are three items I'd like data on.

But I'm sure there are folks following this conversation who could come
up with smarter and more insightful formulations.

Please centre the window title like in previous Human theme, and also
re-order the window controls in classic order, positioned on the right
side (menu - title - minimize, maximize close).

 Workaround
To revert to old layout, enter in terminal:
$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string
menu:minimize,maximize,close

--OR--

Use this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~stownsend42/+archive/light-themes
This option will also fix the graphical appearance of the buttons.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-26 Thread Pietro Battiston
Many right things have been said (and scarcely considerated, but that's
another story), just one added observation: all comments of the form
they're just buttons, you can change it, and partially also you can
change distribution are simply irresponsible.

_I_ can change it, and probably will. But I installed 20 Ubuntus, and
certainly distributed it and suggested it to much many people in my LUG
activity. I don't control their systems, and I _know_ many of them will
have troubles when they upgrade. I also know they don't read this bug.
For instance, I know my grandmother will call me saying something's
wrong, and I will fix the issue on _her_ computer, and say sorry on
behalf on Ubuntu.

But next time, I'll probably install Debian. So yes, you can change
distribution is a partially correct answer... though after putting so
much trust and work in this one I suffer in admitting that I was simply
very irresponsible in trusting in something that is not a democracy
(in my ingenuity, I would have sweared that englightened dictatorship
was just the perfect form of leadership for such a project).

Notice _I_ will probably keep using Ubuntu: it's simpler, more up-to-
date. It's just not something I can afford to publicize, install and
distribute, now I know the decision making process behind it.

[Bug 544570] Re: [users-admin] Changing password many times in the same session hangs and corrupts it

2010-03-26 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Hmm. You reported the bug against the gnome-system-tools, so I thought
that was a bug in users-admin - actually, you first experienced it with
gnome-about-me, which is in gnome-control-center. But I can confirm it
happens with users-admin, which partly uses the same code.

OTOH you say you've been able to reproduce it when creating an account,
which means this happens *with users-admin, and the first time it's
changed*, which changes the description of the issue. Then you say you
were able to change it via user accounts (i.e. users-admin): so what? Do
you mean users-admin hung when changing password for the new account
(i.e. at account creation time), but changed the password correctly the
second time you tried? And then what about gnome-keyring: how can it
have asked you for your old password, since you were not able to set it
for the new user (i.e. it was empty)?

I'd like you to create a 'test' account and try changing the password
many times using 'su test' and then 'passwd', as many times as you want.
If the tool hangs at some point, or displays a message different than
other times, we'll have an important information.

Note that the code used to change your own password is not the same as
the code used to change other user's passwords. So you can't get the
same hang in both.

[Bug 548654] [NEW] Suspend shows untranslated in GDM bottom-right menu

Suspend option in GDM bottom-right menu at login screen shows
untranslated in my Spanish desktop, albeit it's translated in Launchpad:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/gdm/+pots/gdm/es/137/+translate

and the translation is included in the /usr/share/locale-

  rica...@kadath:~$ strings -eS
/usr/share/locale-langpack/es/LC_MESSAGES/gdm.mo | grep Suspend

It seems to be that GDM is searching for Suspend string inside .mo
file, although the right string is Sleep instead:

  rica...@kadath:~$ strings -eS
/usr/share/locale-langpack/es/LC_MESSAGES/gdm.mo | grep Sleep
  Sleep

I attach an screenshot to illustrate the problem.

[Bug 548652] [NEW] menu mouse-scrolling broken, when themes enable gtk-auto-mnemonics

2010-03-26 Thread Per Ångström
Public bug reported:

This bug is a follow-up to bug #537374. The keyboard aspect of that bug
is now fixed, but the mouse-handling problem remains.

How to reproduce:
0.1) Make sure you are testing on a display that has a sufficiently low
resolution to make the System - Preferences menu too high to fit on the screen.
0.2) Make sure you are using a theme that uses the : gtk-auto-mnemonics = 1
option (e.g., Ambiance or Radiance).

1) Bring up the System - Preferences menu.
2) Place the mouse pointer on the down arrow.
3) Wait for the menu to scroll to the bottom.
4) Move the mouse pointer slightly upwards, aiming for the menu's bottom-most
item.

Expected behavior: The menu should stay in its scrolled position, making
it possible to click the bottom-most item.

Actual behavior: As soon as the mouse pointer leaves the down arrow, the
menu scrolls back to the top. It is not possible to click the bottom-
most item.

[Bug 548652] Re: menu mouse-scrolling broken, when themes enable gtk-auto-mnemonics

2010-03-26 Thread Per Ångström

   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42036553/Dependencies.txt

** Attachment added: ProcEnviron.txt
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42036554/ProcEnviron.txt

** Description changed:

This bug is a follow-up to bug #537374. The keyboard aspect of that bug
is now fixed, but the mouse-handling problem remains.

  How to reproduce:
- 0) Make sure you are testing on a display that has a sufficiently low
resolution to make the System - Preferences menu too high to fit on the screen.
+ 0.1) Make sure you are testing on a display that has a sufficiently low
resolution to make the System - Preferences menu too high to fit on the screen.
+ 0.2) Make sure you are using a theme that uses the : gtk-auto-mnemonics = 1
option (e.g., Ambiance or Radiance).
+
  1) Bring up the System - Preferences menu.
  2) Place the mouse pointer on the down arrow.
  3) Wait for the menu to scroll to the bottom.
  4) Move the mouse pointer slightly upwards, aiming for the menu's bottom-most
item.

Expected behavior: The menu should stay in its scrolled position, making
it possible to click the bottom-most item.

Actual behavior: As soon as the mouse pointer leaves the down arrow, the
menu scrolls back to the top. It is not possible to click the bottom-
  most item.

[Bug 156201] Re: gedit handles opening big files badly

2010-03-26 Thread Denis Koryavov
I have the same problem, and I have found one interesting detail: Gedit
works fine if the file contains relatively short lines. In this mode,
Gedit can open very large files (more than 100 MB). If the lines are
long, Gedit freezes (and sometimes crashes) on a 4 MB file. Option word
wrap no significant impact on productivity.

Ubuntu 9.10.

[Bug 548678] [NEW] Ubuntu one fails to install mp3 codec

2010-03-26 Thread mihai007
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Just started live cd of ubuntu 10.04 and in rhythmbox it reapeatedly says that
I do not have mp3plugins and to click to install.
This is ok, I just started live cd.
The problem is that when clicking it says it can't find codecs!

Now I know what the problem here is and how to solve it:
Of course that by default we do not have all repositories activated, so after a
trip to System-Administration-Software sources, tick the universe, ultiverse
clicking on tha install mp3 in rhythmbox works as intended.

Now not everyone knows that the ubuntu one mp3 button problem comes from this.
The button should check if universe/multiverse is enabled, if not enable it or
ask the user (To install mp3 support, multiverse software source needs to be
enabled. Eable? Yes/No)

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-26 Thread Pako
Colin D Bennett wrote
If the window buttons are moved to the left, the scroll bar must also be moved
to the left hand side.

In my case and I hope in many of yours, I never use the right scrollbar
since I'm able to use my touchpad scrollbar on my laptop, it is much
faster and more efficient and I use only my right hand instead of both
at once. For those who prefer to use the mouse they can find an option
in Firefox that allows to use the third button as scroll (unfortunately,
this option is not enabled by default in Firefox). With such adjusted
environment I do not use right scrollbar at all and I work much faster
and more efficient.

[Bug 548684] [NEW] [window controls] maximize and minimize icons are symmetric but do not perform a symmetric action

2010-03-26 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Maximize and minimize are completely different actions, not opposites.
They should not be represented by symmetric icons.

Additional problems:
In themes »Dust«, »Ambiance« and »Radiance«, the minimize icon is a
downward-pointing arrow. This leads to confusion when one has the window list
placed in a top panel. The maximize icon does not even change state when the
window is maximized.

In »New Wave«, the up arrow for maximizing could be confused with »shove
window in top panel« (minimize).

A line for minimizing is probably better than a down arrow because it addresses
the function more than the looks (direction).
I am unclear what is best for maximize though. The expand icon for YouTube
clips is good but not very recognizable in smaller size.

** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 548693] [NEW] Rhythmbox Magnatune fails to load catalog in 10.04

2010-03-26 Thread mihai007
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I am testing 10.04 beta1 live CD and rhythmbox fails to load magnatune catalog,
just sits there and telling Loading magnatune catalog, it does not freezes,
but the catalog never comes.
I saw on other bugs like this that a mkdir ~/.cache/rhythmbox/magnatune
resolved the issue, well in this case it did not change anything. Still fails
to load the catalog.
I even tried using opendns, thought it could be something wrong with isp, but
magnatune page is available in firefox, Also at the same time Ubuntu One music
store does not have any problems in loading catalog/playing songs.

This bug is important as 10.04 ships with ubuntu one store and it will draw
more attention to rhythmbox stores, and having a buggy magnatune plugin along
with ubuntu's one working is just not fair!
What is this, a marketing decison? We make sure Ubuntu one works while the
others dont't and so we sell more!?

Can someone confirm this bug in 10.04?
