[Bug 552008] Possible regression detected

2010-04-01 Thread Apport retracing service
This crash has the same stack trace characteristics as bug #424259.
However, the latter was already fixed in an earlier package version than
the one in this report. This might be a regression or because the
problem is in a dependent package.

[Bug 553803] [NEW] Desktop "boarder" problem caused by theme changes

2010-04-01 Thread Ryan Vickers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Whenever I change a theme, a white "boarder" (~1 pixel outline) appears
around the edge of the desktop. I might not sound like much, but it's
rather annoying...

I've tried changing themes multiple times, "wiping it off" (covering it
with menus/windows), but nothing like that seems to work. However,
performing a "killall nautilus" does correct the issue*

One final detail: it's more than just a visual artifact of some kind -
the (right-click) menu cannot/will not open on the line - only on the
main part of the desktop.

*killing nautilus used to be a pain, as it was always difficult,
unreliable, and slow to reload. To whoever/whatever has changed to
correct this and make it reappear flawlessly and promptly (as it now
does), my deepest thanks go out to you for this!! It's simple little
experience enhancements like this that can take something from feeling
"thick", slow, and bloated, to feeling lightweight, clean, and
efficient!

[Bug 553775] [NEW] paste using right-click paste results in clipboard contents pasted twice

2010-04-01 Thread A York
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

gcalctool 5.30 on lucid as of 2010-04-01:
1. Get "12.34" without quotes into clipboard (e.g. type 12.34 into gedit then
copy).
2. Click "Clr" in calc, then right-click in entry area and choose "paste".
3. Observe "12.3412.34" in entry area.
4. Using ctl-V, or the "Calculator" menu entry "paste" results in the correct
12.34

This isn't about the duplicated decimal point being an invalid format,
using "5" results in "55".

ctl-v and the menu item paste work, context menu pastes twice.

Just did the latest updates for Lucid Beta 1. I also tried to delete

option when attempting to 'Connect to Server...'. I don't think it's
related to my preferences.

Re: [Bug 553747] Re: youtube-dl will not work w/new youtube

2010-04-01 Thread fplum
Nope here's what I get:

fp...@fplum-laptop:~$ youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STFqBh1UDrk
Retrieving video webpage... done.
Extracting URL "t" parameter... failed.
Error: unable to extract URL "t" parameter.
Try again several times. It may be a temporary problem.
Other typical problems:

* Video no longer exists.
* Video requires age confirmation but you did not provide an account.
* You provided the account data, but it is not valid.
* The connection was cut suddenly for some reason.
* YouTube changed their system, and the program no longer works.

Try to confirm you are able to view the video using a web browser.
Use the same video URL and account information, if needed, with this
program.
When using a proxy, make sure http_proxy has http://host:port format.
Try again several times and contact me if the problem persists.

[Bug 512692] Re: Firefox icon missing from panel after 3.5->3.6 upgrade

2010-04-01 Thread earthforce_1
I am seeing the same thing after an upgrade from 8.10

Tried forced reinstall of firefox from synaptic, still no icon.

As a workaround:

Where is the icon file supposed to be so I can fix it manually if it is
installed but not set?

Which package should I get to install it if it is missing?

@ Mark. Ignoring your users is not the way to go. Even when I'm on
Windows, I rarely use Microsoft Window after the ribbon was introduced
in 2007. In fact, I came to Ubuntu after I got annoyed with Windows
Vista. When the vast majority of users want the window control buttons
on the right, you should listen to them. Looks like I'm going to have
to find a new distro.

[Bug 548880] Re: In EOG's new image modification (FSPOT) window , Ctrl-S does not seem to save

2010-04-01 Thread YannUbuntu
Thank you for your answer, I will fill a bug in Gnome bug tracker, and
give the links here. If you don't mind, and as i don't know exactly
which software is concerned, I will first put some more feedback here:

- First experiment ---
- Open an image (located either on Desktop or in another folder) with EOG. Then
open it again with any editing software (F-spot, gthumb, Gimp..), modify it,
save the changes. The image in EOG is not updated.
--> I am not sure it is a bug, it may be the way EOG behaves, so ok to put it
in "wishlist" (low priority).

- Second experiment ---
- Open an image (located either on Desktop or in another folder) with EOG. Then
modify it with the "Edit image" button located inside EOG. Modify it, save the
changes. The image in EOG is not updated.
--> Here the user is clearly expecting the EOG image to be updated, as he does
not know/care that EOG is using an external editing app. It is affecting
Ubuntu's ergonomy, so I really think it should be changed ("wishlist" with high
priority ? Ubuntu's bug ?).

- Third experiment ---
- Copy an image on your Desktop (this step is important)
- Open it with EOG. Then modify it with the "Edit image" button located inside
EOG. Modify it, save the changes. The on the Desktop is not updated (the
thumbnail disappears as if was being updated, but then returns the same as
before).
- Close the EOG window (without closing the Fspot window), then save again the
modification in Fspot. This time the thumbnail on the Desktop is updated.
--> Here it is clearly a bug. It looks that EOG prevents the thumbnail to be
updated.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The battery charging/discharging icon comes and goes every thirty
seconds, regardless of the "icon display" setting. It comes on for
thirty seconds, and then goes away for thirty seconds.

As well, the display dims/sleeps regardless of the power setting but,
that is reported in a different bug.

[Bug 144406] Re: some windows do not appear in the window list

2010-04-01 Thread Piotr Bentkowski
> BTW, Scilab 5.2.1 seems to work fine, though it's build around Java
graphics as well.

I take it back! On a different machine I had similar issues when running
Scilab 5.2.1 (64-bit Linux version) demos presenting Xcos and Modelica
(Scilab's counterpart of Simulink in Matlab).

I opened main window (Console), then clicked ? > Scilab Demonstration. A new
window popped out and then went Xcos > Modelica demos > Ball on platform (but
can be any other demo from that category). It opened Xcos window with a
Simulink style diagram. Then, in Xcos window, I've clicked Simulation > Start.
Scilab compiled the model and when the information about successful compilation
was prompted Xcos window with models diagram disappeared from the GNOME panel.
Also window with demos menu disappeared. They were available through Alt+Tab or
Turbo+Tab. Minimizing windows returned them to the panel.

Scilab 5 is available on licence considered free, so, contrary to Matlab,
source code should be available.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-01 Thread Kyle Jones
Well thanks. I've already experienced the reaction of a novice user who
had the window buttons unexpectedly switch around on them. They loved it
about as much as much as they would a hole in the head. Their annoyance
turned into my annoyance.

So thanks again. I'll be looking forward to hearing all of the
bellyaching and having to fix it for them.

Thanks for fixing what wasn't broken. Damnit.

Also apport picks up a "Problem in gvfs-backends" and says the program
crashed on an assertion failure and that apport does not support

This broken behavior is new as of the last few days on lucid with
nautilus 2.30.0. The ability to mount windows shares via smb was working
just recently in nautilus on lucid.

[Bug 553724] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties show incorrect previews about window controls position

2010-04-01 Thread Daniel Añez Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Currently, gnome-appearance-properties shows incorrectly the previews of the
window controls' position, as in the screenshot:
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5484/pantallazo04.jpg

It should show the previews according to the metacity configuration of each
theme, like this (edited in gimp by me):
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/6770/pantallazo03.jpg

This will help people who don't feel so comfortable with the new
metacity's layout, so they can see that we still have themes with
controls on the right.

[Bug 553716] [NEW] transparent panel fails to properly blur desktop background

2010-04-01 Thread Kevin Fishburne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release: 10.04
gnome-panel: 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu1
compiz: 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu13

Using updated Lucid (as of 04/01/10) the GNOME panel no longer blurs the
desktop background behind it properly. I'm using the Compiz Blur plugin
(Blur Filter: Gaussian, Gaussian Radius: 15, Gaussian Strength: 0.1000,
Mipmap LOD: 5, Independent texture fetch), Compiz Opacity, Brightness
and Saturation plugin ((class=Gnome-panel) & class=90) and a png
background image for the panel with an alpha channel (approx. 25%
opaque).

Before this bug the panel was beautiful and the text clearly readable
with most backgrounds, but now it looks pretty bad unfortunately. I've
experimented with different settings, themes, etc., but the effect
remains the same. If I use Alt-Middlemouse over the panel to gradually
adjust the panel opacity, it will slightly blur the desktop background
at around the 25% opaque mark, but the blur strength doesn't correspond
at all to the blur strength of other windows' opacity levels.

With the panel set to 25% opaque, moving a window behind the panel will
result in the window being more blurry than the desktop background,
where before they'd be blurred by the same amount. Using the panel
properties (Solid color with transparency) results in no blurring at all
of the background or windows moved underneath it. Using only the alpha
channel in the panel background image for transparency results in no
blur at all in the desktop background and any windows moved under the
panel can't be seen at all.

There are several similar problems here, all of which I hope are related
to one or more recent changes in gnome-panel or Compiz and/or its
plugins. Which themes are used seems to be irrelevant.

Here's the panel background image I'm using if anyone would like to experiment
with this:

I was a partisan of the "no change" along the thread (my English is
perfectible, e.g. some possible confusion between layout and l/r side of
the buttons in my previous posts).

Since the change is going to happen anyway, I would rather now lean
toward a *radical* change, as formally proposed by the UI team & Mark
(the very same I did not like in the current 10.04 beta1)

The way Mark is closing the bug is reasonable. he can make space on the
right without too much offending people's habits. The downside is the
loss of originality of the former (or current) theme.

This message might sound contradictory, but I was ready to "bit the
bullet" using the default theme for 6 months over. To see for myself if,
at last, I would not finally come to like the unusual buttons position?

In a way, Mark's final answer removes the emotional side I had for this
bug. It was nice reading so much feedback though (aside from the noise
of "Pako" and "Pyramid" along the thread)

[Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates

2010-04-01 Thread Charles Redman
Just to add to your woes and to add a bit of diversity. I would like to
point out that this does not only apply to Ubuntu as VM on a Windows
host.

I have exactly the same problem with Lucid, running under VM Fusion on
Mac OSX. Interestingly, i only built this machine today and only had
this problem once i updated the machine. I built the initial VM using a
beta1 ISO and everything was wonderful.

Unfortunately i have not been one of the lucky ones and been able to use
the onscreen keyboard to login. I have no way to log in whatsoever, the
keyboard does not come up if i try using the onscreen keyboard. No
matter what i do the minute i tick the box, it disappears.

Well, as Mark pointed out before, we really need more data before any

real solid good choices can be made.

Perhaps we should ask ourselves whether buttons should be ordered

according to whether they are most desctructive, or most used.

Personally, I spend more clicks on closing windows than minimizing and

maximizing or restoring them. I'm willing to bet that if if do a study,

you'll find that:

a. Most people also close windows more than any of the other window
functions on the title bar

b. Most users would prefer having the most used actions from LTR if they
are a LTR user

Additionally, if a user clicks on the close button accidentally, most

software will confirm the closing of the window if it's a potentially

destructive close. If not, it's a bug in that software.

I think this is one of those cases where Apple got it right, and I'm

glad that Canonical decided to make this change before release.

That worked - once. Note: I'd even mv'ed /etc/gdm out of the way to
/etc/x-gdm-x and then of course reinstalled gdm gdm-guest-session and
ubuntu-desktop.

Rebooted & I could login via gdm, but when I rebooted & tried to log in
again I got the loop again as soon as I tried to enter the password.
Mouse freezes, screen goes black, gdm starts again, select user, rinse,
repeat.

Had to go back to recovery mode again, resume, login via the console,
'startx'. Then create an /etc/gdm/custom.conf file again so that I can
at least autologin with the primary user:
[daemon]
AutomaticLogin=
AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=false
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
TimedLoginEnable=false
TimedLogin=
TimedLoginDelay=30
DefaultSession=gnome

Rebooted w/autologin 4 times just to be sure that is working. Also tried
with a different username/account in the 'custom.conf' and rebooted
several time & that works as well.

So I think as Steve & Martin point out, this is most likely a PAM isse.
@Steve/Martin: the machine is 100% under my control so I'm willing to
provide additional info and/or purge/modify any PAM/passwd's if that
will help.

Stop with the F.U.D.

"trade secrets" in Open Source? If that's the case, boy does Debian have

[Bug 551993] Re: .exe is for windows

2010-04-01 Thread AJenbo
Well I'm very sorry for not knowing that then. I did actually press
"Rapporter Problem", but Launchpad was out cold at that time. Also
wouldn't that just have created a bug report any way...

I like it. I don't see why people flame such a small change.

@ Oli, umm he has plans for the right side. Ever heard of "trade
secrets"? Sounds logical enough to me.

@ Mark,

 "Thank you!"

Cheers,
Ronnie

Let me get this clear, the "move all the buttons to the left in all of the
themes" was a different bug all along? I guess I missed that one... My
principal objection all along was the "forced" move to the left--not a
good idea. However, if the right-hand themes are still available without
work-arounds, this becomes even easier to fix for our less "tech savvy"
users. Just set to the old "Human" theme. I like the option to have the
left-handed themes, just not to have people I support be forced to use
them or have to use the gconf-editor to make the other themes look OK.

Mark, I applaud the order for the left-handed buttons that you chose. It
makes support for the new configuration easier

Thank you for all you do for the community!

I agree that having the "close" button inset was visually more
interesting. But in the end, the view that carried the day was that
having the close button in the place where it moves around the least
(the corner) was most valuable. The rest followed from there.
