[Bug 553803] [NEW] Desktop "boarder" problem caused by theme changes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Whenever I change a theme, a white "boarder" (~1 pixel outline) appears around the edge of the desktop. However, performing a "killall nautilus" does correct the issue* One final detail: it's more than just a visual artifact of some kind - the (right-click) menu cannot/will not open on the line - only on the main part of the desktop. *killing nautilus used to be a pain, as it was always difficult, unreliable, and slow to reload. @ Mark. Ignoring your users is not the way to go. Even when I'm on Windows, I rarely use Microsoft Window after the ribbon was introduced in 2007. In fact, I came to Ubuntu after I got annoyed with Windows Vista. When the vast majority of users want the window control buttons on the right, you should listen to them. [Bug 548880] Re: In EOG's new image modification (FSPOT) window , Ctrl-S does not seem to save
Thank you for your answer, I will fill a bug in Gnome bug tracker, and give the links here. If you don't mind, and as i don't know exactly which software is concerned, I will first put some more feedback here: - First experiment --- - Open an image (located either on Desktop or in another folder) with EOG. Then open it again with any editing software (F-spot, gthumb, Gimp..), modify it, save the changes. The image in EOG is not updated. --> I am not sure it is a bug, it may be the way EOG behaves, so ok to put it in "wishlist" (low priority). - Second experiment --- - Open an image (located either on Desktop or in another folder) with EOG. Then modify it with the "Edit image" button located inside EOG. Modify it, save the changes. The image in EOG is not updated. --> Here the user is clearly expecting the EOG image to be updated, as he does not know/care that EOG is using an external editing app. It is affecting Ubuntu's ergonomy, so I really think it should be changed ("wishlist" with high priority ? Ubuntu's bug ?). - Third experiment --- - Copy an image on your Desktop (this step is important) - Open it with EOG. Then modify it with the "Edit image" button located inside EOG. Modify it, save the changes. The on the Desktop is not updated (the thumbnail disappears as if was being updated, but then returns the same as before). - Close the EOG window (without closing the Fspot window), then save again the modification in Fspot. This time the thumbnail on the Desktop is updated. --> Here it is clearly a bug. It looks that EOG prevents the thumbnail to be updated. -- In EOG's new image modification (FSPOT) window , Ctrl-S does not seem to save https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/548880 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to eog in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 144406] Re: some windows do not appear in the window list
> BTW, Scilab 5.2.1 seems to work fine, though it's build around Java graphics as well. I take it back! On a different machine I had similar issues when running Scilab 5.2.1 (64-bit Linux version) demos presenting Xcos and Modelica (Scilab's counterpart of Simulink in Matlab). I opened main window (Console), then clicked ? > Scilab Demonstration. A new window popped out and then went Xcos > Modelica demos > Ball on platform (but can be any other demo from that category). It opened Xcos window with a Simulink style diagram. Then, in Xcos window, I've clicked Simulation > Start. Scilab compiled the model and when the information about successful compilation was prompted Xcos window with models diagram disappeared from the GNOME panel. Also window with demos menu disappeared. They were available through Alt+Tab or Turbo+Tab. Minimizing windows returned them to the panel. Well thanks. I've already experienced the reaction of a novice user who had the window buttons unexpectedly switch around on them. [Bug 553716] [NEW] transparent panel fails to properly blur desktop background
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch) Release: 10.04 gnome-panel: 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu1 compiz: 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu13 Using updated Lucid (as of 04/01/10) the GNOME panel no longer blurs the desktop background behind it properly. I'm using the Compiz Blur plugin (Blur Filter: Gaussian, Gaussian Radius: 15, Gaussian Strength: 0.1000, Mipmap LOD: 5, Independent texture fetch), Compiz Opacity, Brightness and Saturation plugin ((class=Gnome-panel) & class=90) and a png background image for the panel with an alpha channel (approx. 25% opaque). Before this bug the panel was beautiful and the text clearly readable with most backgrounds, but now it looks pretty bad unfortunately. I've experimented with different settings, themes, etc., but the effect remains the same. If I use Alt-Middlemouse over the panel to gradually adjust the panel opacity, it will slightly blur the desktop background at around the 25% opaque mark, but the blur strength doesn't correspond at all to the blur strength of other windows' opacity levels. With the panel set to 25% opaque, moving a window behind the panel will result in the window being more blurry than the desktop background, where before they'd be blurred by the same amount. Using the panel properties (Solid color with transparency) results in no blurring at all of the background or windows moved underneath it. Using only the alpha channel in the panel background image for transparency results in no blur at all in the desktop background and any windows moved under the panel can't be seen at all. There are several similar problems here, all of which I hope are related to one or more recent changes in gnome-panel or Compiz and/or its plugins. Which themes are used seems to be irrelevant. Here's the panel background image I'm using if anyone would like to experiment with this: http://www.eightvirtues.com/misc/bar_horizontal_05_supertrans_32.png Here's my Compiz settings: http://www.eightvirtues.com/misc/Compiz_Settings (right-click, Save Link As) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: gnome-panel 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-18.27-generic 2.6.32.10+drm33.1 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-18-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Architecture: amd64 Date: Thu Apr 1 20:31:49 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" - Release amd64 (20091027) ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: gnome-panel ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug lucid -- transparent panel fails to properly blur desktop background https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553716 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Since the change is going to happen anyway, I would rather now lean toward a *radical* change, as formally proposed by the UI team & Mark (the very same I did not like in the current 10.04 beta1) The way Mark is closing the bug is reasonable. he can make space on the right without too much offending people's habits. The downside is the loss of originality of the former (or current) theme. This message might sound contradictory, but I was ready to "bit the bullet" using the default theme for 6 months over. To see for myself if, at last, I would not finally come to like the unusual buttons position? In a way, Mark's final answer removes the emotional side I had for this bug. Just to add to your woes and to add a bit of diversity. I would like to point out that this does not only apply to Ubuntu as VM on a Windows host. I have exactly the same problem with Lucid, running under VM Fusion on Mac OSX. Interestingly, i only built this machine today and only had this problem once i updated the machine. I built the initial VM using a beta1 ISO and everything was wonderful. Unfortunately i have not been one of the lucky ones and been able to use the onscreen keyboard to login. Apple's close button doesn't "close an application" -- Sent from my Palm Pre On Apr 1, 2010 2:07 PM, Jonathan Carterwrote: @Dag (#569) Well, as Mark pointed out before, we really need more data before any real solid good choices can be made. Perhaps we should ask ourselves whether buttons should be ordered according to whether they are most desctructive, or most used. Personally, I spend more clicks on closing windows than minimizing and maximizing or restoring them. I'm willing to bet that if if do a study, you'll find that: a. Most people also close windows more than any of the other window functions on the title bar b. Most users would prefer having the most used actions from LTR if they are a LTR user Additionally, if a user clicks on the close button accidentally, most software will confirm the closing of the window if it's a potentially destructive close. Note: I'd even mv'ed /etc/gdm out of the way to /etc/x-gdm-x and then of course reinstalled gdm gdm-guest-session and ubuntu-desktop. Rebooted & I could login via gdm, but when I rebooted & tried to log in again I got the loop again as soon as I tried to enter the password. Mouse freezes, screen goes black, gdm starts again, select user, rinse, repeat. Had to go back to recovery mode again, resume, login via the console, 'startx'. Then create an /etc/gdm/custom.conf file again so that I can at least autologin with the primary user: [daemon] AutomaticLogin= AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=false AutomaticLoginEnable=true TimedLoginEnable=false TimedLogin= TimedLoginDelay=30 DefaultSession=gnome Rebooted w/autologin 4 times just to be sure that is working.
