[Bug 1248043] [NEW] evince's menus are useless with the HUD

2013-11-04 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 13.10, most of Evince's menu items have been moved into the
gear cog on the upper right corner of the window like Nautilus, leaving
a single "Help" menu item on the application menu. This makes it
effectively useless with Unity's HUD, especially when the Help menu item
can be triggered with F1.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2013-11-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Killing the whole login is pointless because you'd be killing that which a
locked screen is meant to protect.
Killing just the X session (client) holding the lock is unacceptable because
killing a user's apps or shell is worse than the bug itself.

If we can get the screensaver to just XUngrabKeyboard and XUngrabPointer
before it attempts to grab them itself, then that would be great. I'm
just not sure if X lets you ungrab grabs you didn't create, so it may
not work.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2013-11-04 Thread Obadz
Either that and even if it doesn't work, can't we get a hack that kills
the entire X session in the event the lock is unsuccessful? Or call a
user-defined script? Those would be more useful than removing the
feature altogether.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2013-11-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Initially I was tempted to say we can't fix it because popup menus own
("grab") the keyboard and that blocks the screensaver from taking
ownership of the keyboard. But now I wonder...

Can't the screensaver just force XUngrabKeyboard before trying to grab
it? Would that work?

2013-11-04 Thread Tony
Encompass wrote: "The computer should lock automatically when idle.
Instead of solving the problem you want to get rid of the feature."

But the feature only works some of the time, and the thread here makes
it clear it isn't going to be fixed while the system uses X.

A security feature that only works some of the time is like a set of
brakes that only works some of the time ... damn dangerous.

Remove it until we have something that can be trusted.

I totally disagree.
The computer should lock automatically when idle. Instead of solving the
problem you want to get rid of the feature.
There are times when people are distracted and walk away from the
computer. If someone wanted to be malicious this would be their
opportunity. Just do a little "Kevin Mitnik" and your in.

[Bug 1247895] Re: photo source file missing message with .orf

2013-11-04 Thread Jim Nelson
The other possibility (and the one I'm more leaning toward now) is that
LibRaw doesn't recognize the .orf files. LibRaw is the library Shotwell
uses to process RAW files.

You can import a newer version of Shotwell from our PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ppa However, I don't know if this
alone will solve your problem, since the newer version of LibRaw is not
available there.

Your best bet would be to upgrade Shotwell and build and install the
latest LibRaw from http://www.libraw.org/. In fact, you might look at
http://www.libraw.org/download and see if your camera is listed as
supported before doing that.

You can also mail me a .orf file (j...@yorba.org) and I'll see if the
latest Shotwell supports it.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2013-11-04 Thread Tony
I don't have a problem with manually locking the screen, especially as I
have worked in secure Defence facilities where that is standard
pracrtice.

But I do have a problem with a software interface that falsely claims to
provide a facility which in fact doesn't work correctly if at all.

To eliminate the immediate problem, distros could get rid of the broken
"Lock" setting from the settings menu, and instead just add a notice
that CTRL-ALT-L (or whatever) will lock the screen.

The security issue is not that there isn't an effective automatic lock,
but that the software creates a false and misleading impression that
such a facility exists. That part of the problem could surely be fixed
easily by changing the setting dialog box as suggested.

My programming days are long over (anyone remember assembly language?),
and I don't know what is involved in removing the "Lock" setting from
the Screensaver/Lock dialog box. If I did know, I'd do it myself.

[Bug 1247683] Re: Gnome-screensaver does not lock if "turn screen off" is disabled

2013-11-04 Thread Tony
Seth, thanks for the reference to bug 49579. I can see it's a messy
issue.

I don't have a problem with manually locking the screen, especially as I

provide a facility which in fact doesn't work correctly if at all.

The security issue is not that there isn't an effective automatic lock,
but that the software creates a false and misleading impression that
such a facility exists.

2013-11-04 Thread Seth Arnold
Time-based locking is unlikely to ever work correctly with X11; see also
bug 49579.

If having your session locked when you are away is important to you, you
should be locking your session manually before leaving.

Thanks

2013-11-04 Thread Marty
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1069964 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1069964

Update.
If anyone is still having problems. The error came back for me after using my
fix above using "dconf editor".
Navigated to "org/gnome/desktop/media-handling" and unticked "automount" and
"automount-open".

So I used dconf-editor again and used the search function and searched
for "auto". I found lots of matches but found that the auto-mount
settings for Caja (Cinammon desktop) were causing the auto-mount
warning/error even though I was using a Unity session. The problem must
have come back when I started using Caja instead of Nautilus.

I don't. I would like to stay with 12.04 if possible. I find that in the

isn't it possible to update shotwell within 12.04 to a newer version?

[Bug 1247948] [NEW] setting items should have a fix order

2013-11-04 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

The current system settings icon order is alphabetical.

Problem 1:
Not the most important items are displayed at first in every row. For example
in the 'Hardware' category (English version), 'Bluetooth' is the first item,
but it should be IMHO 'Diesplays'.

Problem 2:
Sorting the icons alphabetical results in having the icons on different places
depending on the language the system currently uses -> pretty bad when
supporting other people through the phone...

It would be much better to give the icons a fixed position. This would
improve the system settings user experience, because the important
buttons would be faster accessible.

[Bug 1242126] Re: gedit: Could not find loader 'python' for plugin

2013-11-04 Thread rg
Same here, sourcecodebrowser plugin worked on 13.04, no longer works on
13.10. When I start gedit from cmdline I get the same error as OP upon
attempting to enable the plugin. Seems to be a similar issue with many
gedit plugins, but apparently all with different solutions. Many have
recommended editing the .plugin file and changing Loader=python to
Loader=python3, which seems to get us past the "could not find loader"
problem, but still doesn't work:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/home/rob/.local/share/gedit/plugins/sourcecodebrowser/__init__.py",
line 1, in
import plugin
ImportError: No module named 'plugin'

Also just for the whynot I tried python2 and got "Could not find loader
'python2' for plugin 'sourcecodebrowser'"

I do have all 3 pythons...

$ which python
/usr/bin/python
$ which python2
/usr/bin/python2
$ which python3

[Bug 1247895] Re: photo source file missing message with .orf

2013-11-04 Thread Jim Nelson
It may be that the version of gphoto2 you're using doesn't recognize
.orf files as RAW files. gphoto2 is the libray Shotwell uses to
communicate with cameras.

Do you have access to a newer version of Ubuntu (with a newer version of
Shotwell)?

If you connect the camera to your computer, is it available in Nautilus
as a mounted filesystem? If so, you should be able to copy the files
off of the camera onto your computer manually. If you import them to
Shotwell that way, are they available?

There are many crash on eject bugs - the main issue is that the because
the USB device is gone libmtp is left in an unpredictable state, so it's
easy for things to blow up even as we try to exit as quickly as
possible. Did you see the exact same backtrace? It might also match one
of the other eject crashes that are filed.

[Bug 743517] Re: Operators need to be localised

2013-11-04 Thread vsespb
I am Russian speaker, but I never use ⊕ instead of XOR.

I think ⊕ is not something Russian, but something from boolean algebra.

proof:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2295/index.htm ("Enclosed
Mathematical Operators" char class)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exclusive_or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_logic_symbols

Also, I don't want other functions of gcalctool to be localized (like sin(),
cos(), log). Russians use latin sin() and cos() in school and in university.

Could this ticket status be set to "Opinion"?

I suffer from same bug. I use two layouts configured via XKB. I reverted to XKB

[Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10

2013-11-04 Thread Norbert
@hero1900
Here we speak about broken hotkeys on non-latin layout. Did gnome-terminal
opened after Ctrl+Alt+T were pressed on non-latin layout?
For Alt+Shift hotkey we have separate bug 1245926.
