[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver
** Description changed: + https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues/435 + + --- + The boot process hangs with the last message being "started bpfilter". There is unusual Network activity during that time. The light of the WiFi adapter is blinking a lot. I am not sure the problem is with the gdm3 package. As a matter of fact, I would remove it and let someone more experienced to set it. I'm afraid I might break something, though. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem: 1. Boot Ubuntu 18.10 with the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. The behavior you expected: I expected Ubuntu 18.10 to boot normally. The behavior you actually encountered: The computer gets stuck in a command-like environment with the last message being "started bpfilter". You can't type any commands. I have found that uninstalling the Nvidia proprietary drivers by going into recovery mode fixes the issue. Booting with the earlier kernel doesn't fix the issue. Installing the earlier v.340 driver also doesn't fix the issue. This (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1032639/ubuntu-18-04-stuck-in- boot-after-starting-gnome-display-manager-on-intel-graphic) seems relevant. Public bug reported: Just upgraded 16.04.1 LTS to Bionic Beaver 18.04.1 LTS Upgraded from a non-admin user login using 'sudo', now that user fails GDM login. All other users, some admin - some not, work fine. On failing user mouse cursor locks at last position after clicking on 'login'. Computer Hard-Locks... All other users, pointer jumps to lower right quad of screen and login proceeds. Same lockup when switching to that failing user via User-Switch menu. ** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm3 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1799617 Title: Main user account fails gdm3 - upgrade to Beaver 18.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1799617/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1799609] [NEW] App Grid "Spring" Animation Increases CPU Usage and Drops Frames
Public bug reported: [This is a new report to reflect latest information, considering previous issue report was submitted two cycles ago] Opening the Applications Overview (App Grid) displays a janky animation. Seemingly worse depending on number of application icons being displayed, this issue will also instantly cause 2 CPU spikes. Differing hardware configurations will see more/less pronounced results; however, it is present to some extent on nearly every machine. It will happen regardless of using the default XOrg or Wayland. This bug is worse on lower-powered machines, with a 2014 Celeron CPU taking a 65-70% hit with no other applications open. [Bug 1799612] [NEW] Suspend doesn't clear the display
Public bug reported: I am on a Dell Precision 5520 running 18.10 with default settings, nvidia drivers, and updated this morning. The bug started yesterday or the day before. I have the laptop set to suspend on lid close. Since yesterday, when I open the lid and the display comes back on, the lock screen doesn't display. I see the dock bar on the left, the menu at the top, and either all black or whatever I was working on in the middle. I can move the mouse, but cannot interact with anything in the dock or the main display. I CAN interact with the power dropdown at the top right, where I can select a "pause" logo- which will cause the power to go off (fully suspending the machine presumably)... and from there when I wake it back up, the lock screen is properly displayed. I have ALSO tried mashing function keys to restart the GUI, and a couple times some combination of alt-ctrl-shift and some function keys have gotten me to a working login screen (and after typing my password, back to my working session) but it hasn't worked that way when trying to do it scientifically and press the buttons slowly to figure out which ones caused it. [Bug 1799119] Re: Software Center name not in DNS
Dear Olivier. As I said in the intial report, I Googled Software Center and got https://software-center.ubuntu.com/subscriptions/. Apparently the pages referring to this link are out of date. The app for installing new apps in MATE is the Software Boutique. But the list of apps available is very limited and at least the KDE package is corrupt and will not install. To get additional apps your have to install an app called "Software". Unfortunately this app in version 18.10 does not work. Under Ubuntu MATE 18.04, the Software app did include Eclipse and it was able to install this app. That is not true in 18.10. I am just trying to help the developers of 18.10 to find the bugs so that they can fix them. After rebooting my machine I was able to see more apps and was even able to install one. Then I tried to install Kile in the "Productivity" heading. [Bug 1799515] [NEW] Gnome on-screen keyboard doesn't appear when a text field is focused
You have been subscribed to a public bug: After installing ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso the on-screen keyboard was working as expected: the on-screen keyboard would come up as soon as the focus was in a gnome-terminal or gedit window. But after upgrading gnome-shell from 3.28.1-0ubuntu2 to 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 the on-screen keyboard stopped coming up when focusing a gnome-terminal or gedit window. The only place (I found) where the on-screen keyboard still comes up is in the text fields of the shell such as the search field in the gnome overview. Details: * The on-screen keyboard was explicitly enabled in accessibility. * None of the caribou and onboard packages are installed. * Only two packages were upgraded between the working and broken configurations: gnome-shell 3.28.1-0ubuntu2 ---> 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 gnome-shell-common 3.28.1-0ubuntu2 ---> 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 * Bug #1589240 is similar but very old and was closed with instructions to reopen a new bug if needed. * The test environment is a VMware VM which does have a "real" keyboard and does not have a touchscreen. I don't think that justifies the change in behavior, particularly given the inconsistency between gnome-shell's text fields and the others. ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gnome on-screen keyboard doesn't appear when a text field is focused https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1799515 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1798053] Re: [SRU] Click on the back icon in gnome-software doesn't work
** Description changed: + [Test Case] + + 1. Open gnome-software + 2. Press Ctrl+F and type "firefox" or any string that will return results + 3. Click any result in the list (snap package or deb, already installed or not, it doesn't matter) + 4. Observe that a new page is open showing details about the application + 5. Close gnome-software + 6. Open gnome-software again + 7. Observe that the application is open on the last open page (details view about the application) + 8. Click the back button (top-left corner) + + Expected result: the application goes back to the list of search results + (or perhaps to the home screen) + + Current result: nothing happens + + Please note that the upstream fix reverts a new behaviour and as a + result, when opening again gnome-software at step 6, the application + opens on the home screen instead of resuming the last open page. This is + consistent with how gnome-software behaves in bionic. So after applying + the patch, steps 7 and 8 can be folded into one single step: "Observe + that the application is open on the home screen". + + + [Regression Potential] + + Low. This is a cherry-pick of a self-contained trivial upstream commit that is already released in gnome-software 3.30.3 (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/commit/ca5f8e74b6f9991ae228caa2c698131a54764774). + As noted above, it does change the behaviour of re-opening the application after closing it, but it reverts it to the behaviour it had in bionic, so I don't think it should be considered a regression. + + Re-opening the application after closing it in a number of different + situations should be thoroughly exercised to make sure that this doesn't + introduce any functional regression. + + + [Original Description] + Searched for Chromium, installed Chromium (snap version), clicked Launched and used chromium. Went back to gnome-software and clicked the back button. Nothing happened. Restarted gnome-software and clicked the back button. Nothing happened. The relevant commit is https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome- software/commit/ca5f8e74b6f9991ae228caa2c698131a54764774, and I verified that applying it as a patch on top of gnome-software 3.30.2-0ubuntu7 fixes the issue. In fact, with this change, when re-opening gnome- software after closing it while seeing the details of an app, the application is reset to the main screen. Which may or may not be seen as desirable, but at least it fixes the bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-software in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1798053 Title: Click on the back icon in gnome-software don't work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1798053/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver
Thanks. I think I can see the problem now. The first thing that happens is that gdm3 tries to start a Wayland login screen ('gnome-shell' process) and fails because the Nvidia driver doesn't support KMS: Oct 23 11:59:14 efthimios-GA-78LMT-USB3 gnome-shell[1688]: meta_kms_resources_init failed: Calling drmModeGetResources() failed, assuming we have no outputs Oct 23 11:59:14 efthimios-GA-78LMT-USB3 gnome-shell[1688]: Failed to create backend: No GPUs with outputs found That is not a bug. What it should do next (and does on my machine) is then try again to start the login screen using X instead. However I can't see that in your log. You might have something odd installed or preventing the fallback from working. Please: 1. Report the bug to the gdm developers here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues and then tell us the new bug ID. 2. Try this as a workaround: edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the line: #WaylandEnable=false -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1798790 Title: Ubuntu 18.10 login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1798790/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
