[Bug 59400] Screen saver running in sessions that are not in control of monitor

2006-09-07 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

When two or more people are using the same computer via the Switch
User method - hit the log out button then select Switch User, it
seems that the screen savers for those that are not currently in control
of the sceen runs. This is a drain on CPU resources. The screen saver
should only run under the account that currently controls the physical
display.

This is the case on the 6.06 release.

Not really a bug with the screensaver - an unintended use exposes a
problem.

This behavior manifests as well on a clean install of 6.10. However,
Mr. Noble notes a 75% failure rate. For me it is 100% - I've not been
able to edit the GNOME menu in any way. This includes checking and
unchecked entry to make it visible.

[Bug 233620] Re: Evolution does not import contact certificates

It seems that evolution no longer imports public keys when it receives a
signed email message. In addition, it shows a valid and trusted
certificate as being untrusted. (I have the root signing certificate
installed and marked as trusted for all three uses.) This used to work
flawlessly.

[Bug 4472] Re: Junk mail not being identified by spamassassin plugin (daemon is disabled)

2008-07-18 Thread Ken Pratt
I am using Hardy Heron (64 bit) and the bogofilter plugin. The plugin
is enabled and the binaries are installed. Despite this, Evolution
never tags incoming mail on its own. I run an IMAP server that provides
header tagging of all incoming email. It almost unerringly places the
correct spam indication in the header of the email. I adjusted
Evolution to trust those headers - and it still does not move incoming
spam to the Junk folder.

Normally, I use procmail to sort tagged messages into suspected and
known spam folders. These removes any need to perform these tests using
the client. I commented these rules out in order to test Evolutions
ability and find that it does not work.

[Bug 281807] Re: Pipe to SpamAssassin failed, error code: 1

2008-10-25 Thread Ken Pratt
I have the same problem using the amd64 8.10 release candidate. I use
an external spam filter that simply adds a header. I then set a filter
under the spam tab in evolution to tag and move these email messages. I
turn off spam checking by unchecking the check incoming email for spam
checkbox, but leave on the Check Custom Headers. The custom headers
works.

I notice that the error only occurs at startup when email has built up
on my IMAP server. After the initial re-sync, I recieve no errors about
spam checking. It is as though the initialization code does not check
for the disabled option and that it does not correctly connect to the
BogoFilter plugin. Evolution does report that the plugin is available
and the binary installed.

[Bug 295962] [NEW] f-spot auto import does not work

2008-11-09 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 i386 Desktop Ubuntu.

When I insert a CD with images on it, I get a prompt asking if I would
like to start f-spot. I click ok, the mouse turns into a busy icon for
a few seconds and nothing happens. The mouse turns back into the
standard pointer.

I can start f-spot from the application menu and import the files just
fine. It is the auto function that seems to be broken. The same
behavior occurs even if f-spot is open and running when I insert the CD.

[Bug 331169] [NEW] CPU Utilization too high

2009-02-18 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Using atop on a 64 bit Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) running Rhythmbox while it
plays an on-line stream (128Kbps MP3) shows that it consumes on average
60% of the CPU. There is no file scanning going on as I have no local

[Bug 503786] Re: HTML formatted GPG encrypted email not properly handled

If you receive a PGP (GPG) encrypted email from someone using
Thunderbird, and the sender formatted the email using HTML, evolution
will not recognize it as an enciphered block. If the sender chooses the

[Bug 713807] Re: Can't see where ripped music is saved

2011-02-07 Thread Ken Pratt
If I do not konw the name of the song, it makes it very difficult to
find it in the Rhythmbox listing. If I rip a disk that has a
fingerprint that is not recognized so no metadata is retrieved, it
becomes very difficult to find what was ripped. Normally, I'd gor to
the directory and search by date. Then use Picard to help find and
apply the meta data.

So this is no so much a bug, but rather a feature request. If I could
see the directory to which a CD is ripped, it would make this case much
easier from a usage perspective,

is running but is apparently not providing settings. I have to kill the

[Bug 612545] [NEW] Rhythmbox status icon has no menu

2010-08-02 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have a very large collection of music. Greater than 5,000 tracks
encoded as FLAC files. Sometimes when I start Rhythmbox using the
Applications-Sound Video, the status icon shows up immediately but
left clicking on the icon produces no drop down menu and there is no way
to show the GUI. I have to kill the process (SIGTERM) then start it
from the command line twice. The first results in the exact same
behavior as if I started it from the menu system. The second works.
Keep in mind I start the second while the first is still running. I
start the first and place the process in the background:

rhythmbox

then start a second

rhythmbox

The second pops up a GUI and seems to kill the first or at least sends a
message tot he first and exits. After executing the second, all is well
and there is only one rhythmbox process running. And, the menu drops
down from the status icon.

This may be a simple case of a large data set and a disk that needs to
spin up. The GUI thread is blocked by initialization over a large
number of songs.

In the initial case, where I start Rhythmbox from the menu, waiting a
while after starting does not fix the lack of menu. I do have to
restart the process.

[Bug 614597] [NEW] Disk sizing is incorrect

2010-08-06 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

I have a RAID 1 array consisting of two disks. Each of the disks is
reported as 400 GB (this is correct but with low precision). I have a 1
TB drive that is unused and recognized by the gnome-disk-utility. Using
the GUI, I tried to add the unpartitioned 1 TB drive to the RAID array
as a 'spare'. The GUI told me that it would create two partitions - one
400GB in size to be added to the RAID array, and the other 600GB that
will be free. It performs the partitioning then, when mdadm runs to add
it as a spare, it reports that the size 400GB is not large enough and
fails. This is reported by the GUI. So I can not add a spare using the
GUI.

The two disks that are part of the functional array are unpartitioned -
that is I am using the whole disks.

[Bug 654916] [NEW] Gnome Panel Painting Incorrectly

[Bug 549550] [NEW] Receiving a PGP encrypted message hangs Evolution

2010-03-27 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution hangs when attempting to display a PGP (GPG) signed message
from an IMAP server. The status in the lower left states Decrypting
Message (0% complete) accompanied by a spinning icon. This is not a
problem with the IMAP server as non-encrypted and S/MIME encrypted email
display fine. After waiting for 2 minutes, I forcefully killed the app.
My guess is that the GPG password prompting is not being properly
handled? GPG is waiting for a password and the input is hidden

[Bug 553903] [NEW] DLNA/UPnP Hangs

2010-04-02 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

I have several UPnP/DLNA compliant DMS (media servers) including MythTV

[Bug 560644] [NEW] GDM hangs when password prompt is shown

2010-04-11 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have an old Dell Inspiron 8000 with an Nvidia video card. I installed
the Beta of 10.4 (Karmic) and after performing a full update, can no

and the password prompt shows. At this point the mouse and keyboard

[Bug 560651] [NEW] Without a gnome-session one can not report a bug

2010-04-11 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

There is a GDM bug that removes my ability to login and create a gnome
session in the normal manner. I have to drop to console, stop gdm, and
launch an X session using startx. Once this is done, using either
ubuntu-bug or apport-cli results in the following when an attempt is
made to launch the browser.

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are
that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS
locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for
information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not
receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a
reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken.)
Error showing url: Operation not supported

Perhaps a fallback position could be used? If the gnome-session can't
be used to interact with the browser, allowing for the completion of the
bug report, perhaps start the browser directly?

This occurs from the login screen.I boot my computer then can not
log in because of the GConf error. The bug is in GDM. Thanks for the
work-around - that is the use of the dbus-launch command as a means to
get back to the desktop.

[Bug 503786] [NEW] HTML formatted GPG encrypted email not properly handled

2010-01-06 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

If you receive a PGP (GPG) encrypted email from someone using
Thunderbird, and the sender formatted the email using HTML, evolution
will not recognize it as an enciphered block. If the sender chooses the
text format option when writing the email, all is well. I assume
Thunderbird to Thunderbird PGP HTML formatted email works fine. It
would be nice for evolution to support this as well.

I am able to send HTML PGP encrypted email to Thunderbird users without
a problem. I just can't reciprocate. So I require them to format email
to me in text if they want to encrypt - not very neighborly.

Not a bug really, just a cool feature that is in Thunderbird. My
Windows Thunderbird using friends are busting on my Linux again 'cause
of this...

[Bug 494059] [NEW] Does not stop one stream after another is started

2009-12-08 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This seems to be a regression as I see a bug reported against Ubuntu
7.10 that is similar to this.

Start playing the radio stream at:

http://scds20.iad.llnw.net/citadelcc_WMAL_AM?MSWMExt=.asf

Then, using the Last.fm plugin, start playing your Personal Radio by
selecting it then waiting for the song list to file then double clicking
on the first song. The new selection will start playing and the
original stream will continue to play indefinitely.

As an aside, it may be a good idea to un-depress the play button when
the user selects a track that is not the current track. Then a single
click on the play button when a different track is selected will start
it playing.

[Bug 527973] [NEW] After log in splash

Public bug reported:

Using a 9.10 Karmic Koala 64 bit install, attach two monitors in
Xinerama (or Nvidia TwinView) of differing resolutions. The post login

[Bug 571944] [NEW] nautilus no longer accept left mouse clicks

2010-04-29 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I was using NetBeans to edit a file and NetBeans got into a mode where
the mouse was stuck in select drag mode. That is, with no mouse
buttons pressed, the greyed select region followed my mouse as if I had
started a select mouse gesture. ESC did not free it. Once this
happened, I could not interact with anything on the desktop or anything
else at all that required a left click. It was if the left click button
ceased to work.

I suspect Nautilus (as it is managing the root window) missed an event
that would free the select gesture leaving the cursor in constant drag
mode. I had to CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a console and reboot the computer.
I could not log out.

ALT-TAB still worked. And applications that have keyboard shortcuts
still worked.

Even if the fault lies with Java or NetBeans, the nautilus should
recover from this situation using some means.

[Bug 408428] [NEW] Rhythmbox can't open second streaming source

2009-08-03 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Start Rhythmbox then start playing the stream with the following URL:

http://216.155.137.150:8002

Then, after a few minutes of playing, stop the playing by clicking on
the play button. Now try to start playing the stream with the URL:

http://ubuntu.hbr1.com:19800/ambient.ogg

And you will receive an error dialog, Couldn't start playback. Failed
to open output device. If you then shutdown Rhythmbox then start it
up. You can then play the stream.

I used the above URLs as examples. I run into this problem any time I
switch between streams.

I use a buffer of 112 Kb and have cross-fading turned on.

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 64bit. I do not run into the same problems
when using Banshee.

Seems I can not reproduce this on a fast network connection. I am
usually behind a DSL line and that is where I encounter the error.
Perhaps it is a timeout issue not being reported with the correct error?

[Bug 483789] [NEW] gdm does not display correctly when run under NVidia twinview

2009-11-16 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I use a laptop with an external display. The laptop has a built in
NVidia card and supports NVIdia's 'TwinView'. When I boot the computer
with the external monitor hooked up, the GDM screen shows on the laptop
despite the external display being marked as primary and, once I enter
my username and password, GDM does not properly process the graphic
transition to the gnome session. It draws a background image over a
portion of the laptop screen. The image fades to the proper background
image. So what I see is a portion of the overall screen Real Estate
getting covered up properly by GDM during the login process, but a
significant portion not being covered up. This ruins the nice new fade
in effect that does work when running with only one monitor. In short,
GDM does not seem to recognize the Xinerama settings exposed by the
NVidia TwinView mode. (Just my guess)

[Bug 485271] [NEW] Invalid Drop Target results in stuck mouse

2009-11-19 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If you attempt to drag an icon of off the Applications-Accessories menu
quickly, you will sometimes get a dialog pop-up stating something like
Invalid Drop Target. This occurs without letting go the left mouse
button. Once it does occur, the mouse gets stuck in drop mode and you
can not interact with the desktop or any open application. You are
forced to go to a virtual terminal and kill the gnome-session to
recover. My exact reproducible scenario is to try to quickly drag the
gnome-terminal icon from the Applications-Accessories menu to the
Docky bar in gnome-do.

[Bug 996473] [NEW] Status selections in drop down menu do not work

2012-05-08 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Empathy is up and running and I can chat. I have accounts with
Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo!, and Nearby (broadcast). The drop down
menu under the envelope shows that I am Offline b ut I am not. And, I
can not change the status to other than offline. I attached my
/etc/network/interfaces on the assumption that perhaps it is playing a
role along with NetworkManager.

I should be able to change my status to any of Available, Away, Busy, or
Invisible. Clicking on any of those selections results in nothing. My
status is not changed nor is the indicator.

Thanks you.

[Bug 884860] [NEW] Nautilus won't browse network

2011-11-01 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

After recent update, I can no longer browse my Samba server. I can,
however, enter a smb url successfully.

Using smb://fit/ in the nautilus location bar works

set up DISPLAY

~$ export DISPLAY=:2

ssh to remote PC

~$ ssh -YC user@remote

now logged into remote - do a simple test:

~$ xeyes

I see the xeyes open on my local desktop inside the Xephyr window
success. Press CTRL-C in terminal to exit xeyes.

Try to start gnome-session on remote with:

~$ gnome-session --debug

I get the following on the console:

gnome-session-binary[17018]: DEBUG(+): Enabling debugging

I expected a non-accelerated gnome session to start inside the Xephyr

[Bug 1740416] [NEW] nfs and cifs mounts are attempted too early in boot process

2017-12-28 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Systemd should automatically wait for networking and DNS systems to be
in place prior to attempting to mount CIFS or NFS filesystems. This was
the behavior under Ubuntu 17.04. After upgrading to 17.10 the behavior
changed. Systemd no longer waits for networking and DNS to be
initialized before attempting to mount network filesystems. This
requires me to manually mount these systems or add a hack in the
rc.local file.

Adding _netdev to the fstab entry does not change the incorrect
behavior. Here is the example that worked under 17.04 but no longer
works under 17.10:

drobo5n:/mnt/DroboFS/Shares/PublicNFS /mnt/drobo5n nfs async,proto=tcp 0
0

I also tried:

drobo5n:/mnt/DroboFS/Shares/PublicNFS /mnt/drobo5n nfs
_netdev,async,proto=tcp 0 0

[Bug 1621203] Re: evolution/totem/gthumb crashes when run in vnc session

2018-07-04 Thread Ken Pratt
A similar error occurs when one attempts to run evolution on a remote X
Desktop. It seems there is a dependency on direct rendering which is not
available in either the VNC or remote X windows environments.

Recreate with:

# ssh -X servername [where the server is running Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop]
# evolution
libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate

(evolution:25704): Gdk-ERROR **: 06:48:35.588: The program 'evolution' received
an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 207 error_code 1 request_code 153 (DRI2) minor_code 1)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

[Bug 1815127] Re: Evolution fails to properly parse Date: header

2019-03-08 Thread Ken Pratt
It seems that the parser in evolution fails to parse:

Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2019 19:15:39 + (UTC)

The above is the actual header from the SMTP conversation.

[Bug 1815127] [NEW] Evolution fails to properly parse Date: header

2019-02-07 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

I received an email with a date header of:

Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2019 19:15:39 + (UTC)

It is incorrectly show as

Thu 14:15

In the Date column of the message display. The month abbreviation and
day number are not present. The email shows up sorted incorrectly by the
Thu 14:15 date (as if it were within the last week) instead of the
actual Thu, 31 Jan 2019 19:15:39 + (UTC) date.

Perhaps it is the redundant timezone indicator?

Thank you for the great work!
