[Desktop-packages] [Bug 490434] Re: keyboard input less responsive after screensaver fails to activate because of VirtualBox
I'm currently seeing this under Ubuntu 14.10. In my case, however, the issue is somewhat worse than that originally reported. Regardless of whether the guest image is idle or not, the keyboard in such guest becomes unreliably unresponsive exactly X minutes after (re)entering such guest, where: * "Unreliably unresponsive" means a seemingly random loss of roughly half of all keyboard input (as in the original report). * "X" is the currently configured inactivity time in the Ubuntu host (defaulting to 10 minutes), after which the host screen is blanked or a host screensaver run. Interestingly, this is correctable in the same manner as that originally reported. To reiterate, when a guest keyboard becomes unresponsive: 1. Return to the Ubuntu host from the guest VirtualBox image (e.g., by hitting ). 2. At such point, Ubuntu immediately performs inactivity handling (e.g., screen blanking, screensaver running). 3. Stop such blanking or screensaver (e.g., by hitting any key). 4. Return to the guest VirtualBox image from the Ubuntu host (e.g., by clicking in the VirtualBox window for such guest). This is may not necessarily be a gnome-screensaver issue. I'm currently running Cinnamon 2.2 as provided by the canonical (horrible pun intended) 14.10 Ubuntu repositories. While I do have both "cinnamon- screensaver" and "gnome-screensaver" installed, the prior appears to currently take precedence. Intuitively, this "feels" like a lower-level upstream issue. My suspicions are that VisualBox is failing to notify the host X11 of the activity state of guest images *AND* that VisualBox is failing to preempt guest images on guest inactivity with the host X11 inactivity handler (e.g., screen blanking, screensaver running). It may be pertinent to note that the guest in question is OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Due to licensing concerns, Oracle has yet to offer a Guest Additions ISO for OS X VirtualBox guests, thus preventing use of Seamless Mode under such guests. Seamless Mode displays application windows running under guests as native windows running under the host, and is available for all non-OS X guests. Since virtualization of OS X is non-trivial (to say the least), most VirtualBox users are likely to run guests under the blatantly superior Seamless Mode. Does any this matter? Possibly not. My deepest suspicion, however, is that VirtualBox only fails to notify the host X11 of the activity state of guest images *NOT* in Seamless Mode – which would, of course, always be the case for OS X guests and only rarely the case for non-OS X guests. This could explain the lack of concurring reports for this bug. (Or this could explain nothing at all.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/490434 Title: keyboard input less responsive after screensaver fails to activate because of VirtualBox Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver Description: Ubuntu 9.10 Release: 9.10 Installed: 2.28.0-0ubuntu3 Candidate: 2.28.0-0ubuntu3 Version table: *** 2.28.0-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status -- Expected to happen: I work away inside a VirtualBox image, leave my machine for 10 mins come back and type away as normal. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1414540] [NEW] compiz does not swallow mousewheel hotkeys properly when dealing with smooth scrolling
Public bug reported: When dealing with high-resolution smooth scrolling devices, e.g. some Logitech mice after being configured with Solaar, and scrolling on touchpads, Compiz's scroll-based hotkeys are not properly isolated from Gtk+3 applications. For example, in Gtk3 nautilus, try using Super+Scroll or Alt+Scroll to zoom in/out or change the window opacity, while the cursor rests above a scrollable area. Notice that doing that with a normal mouse properly swallows the scroll events so that they don't hit the Nautilus window, but compiz does not do the same for smooth-scrolling devices. affects ubuntu/compiz -- Kind regards, Loong Jin ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1414540 Title: compiz does not swallow mousewheel hotkeys properly when dealing with smooth scrolling Status in compiz package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When dealing with high-resolution smooth scrolling devices, e.g. some Logitech mice after being configured with Solaar, and scrolling on touchpads, Compiz's scroll-based hotkeys are not properly isolated from Gtk+3 applications. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio
as pulseaudio is run as the logged-in user, the fix is to also run mpd as the logged-in user, which is what will happen automatically if you disable mpd as a system service and provide your own ~/.mpdconf - see README.Debian for details ** Changed in: mpd (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192735 Title: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio Status in mpd package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: pulseaudio Version info: uname -r: 2.6.24-8-generic pulseaudio Version: 0.9.9-1ubuntu2 mpd : Version: 0.13.1-3ubuntu1 After changing from esound to pulseaudio, MPD is not able to access the sound card. MPD logs the following errors in /var/log/mpd/errors.log: No protocol specified E: client-conf-x11.c: XOpenDisplay() failed *** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Access denied By giving "xhost +" and restarting mpd the XOpenDisplay() error disappears, but the error regarding PULSEAUDIO still persists. This happend using the latest ubuntu gutsy as of 16.02.2008, as well as the current Hardy. Pulseaudio was installed using https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio on gutsy, and the system was upgraded to hardy using update-manager. I have added mpd and root to all pulseaudio groups (pulse, pulse- access, pulse-rt), but this did not solve the problem. Xine works using native pulse output and mythtv works using "ALSA:default" output device. I tracked down the issue where WiFi would fail after suspend in that it doesn't associate anymore (tries to connect but fails), and it's a bug in wpa-supplicant that was fixed in the current version (Ubuntu uses 2.1, newest is 2.3). Replacing Ubuntu's wpa-supplicant 2.1 with Debian's wpa-supplicant 2.3 and rebooting immediately fixed the issue. I tracked down the issue where WiFi would fail after suspend in that it doesn't associate anymore (tries to connect but fails), and it's a bug in wpa-supplicant that was fixed in the current version (Ubuntu uses 2.1, newest is 2.3). Replacing Ubuntu's wpa-supplicant 2.1 with Debian's wpa-supplicant 2.3 and rebooting immediately fixed the issue. https://packages.debian.org/sid/wpasupplicant -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to wpasupplicant in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305857 Title: wireless authentication always times out after standby Status in wpasupplicant package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After updating from saucy to trusty, putting the system to standby makes wireless stop working after wake up. Rebooting the system fixes it until next time standby is entered. None of these changed the behaviour or seemed wrong. After following https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/NetworkManager/Debugging, I was able to get the attached lines in /var/log/syslog. The driver works fine after wake up and scanning for networks works too. Upon trying authentication, the request fails after 5 seconds with a timeout. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1298021] Re: Google Chrome (not chromium) won't start in guest session
This bug still seems to exist (25/1/2015). Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this: just installed Edubuntu 14.04 (on 25/1/2015), let it install the updates. Now I am trying to use Google Chrome (yuck; version 40.02214.91) in Guest mode. The error "Failed to move to new namespace: PID namespaces supported, Network namespace supported, but failed: errno = Operation not permitted" pops up. Running /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome Cx -> chromium displays the same error. Appending the flag --no-sandbox works but that pops up a warning in Chrome which I'd like to suppress (there's no point to the warning since Chrome, with that flag, will be running in the Guest login which gets wiped after each logout). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1298021 Title: Google Chrome (not chromium) won't start in guest session Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Related, but not a dupe of bug 577919 Install Google Chrome (not chromium) and switch to a guest session Start chrome from a terminal See the following error:- "Failed to move to new PID namespace: Operation not permitted" I see these apparmor denials:- [Tue Mar 25 12:51:46 2014] type=1400 audit(1395861131.882:541): apparmor="DENIED" operation="capable" profile="/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-guest-session" pid=30034 comm="chrome-sandbox" capability=21 capname="sys_admin" [Tue Mar 25 12:52:13 2014] type=1400 audit(1395861159.510:542): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-guest-session" name="/proc/30062/oom_score_adj" pid=30062 comm="chrome" requested_mask="wc" denied_mask="wc" fsuid=130 ouid=130 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 Package: lightdm 1.9.13-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.13.0-19.40-generic 3.13.6 Uname: Linux 3.13.0-19-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.13.3-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Wed Mar 26 19:08:04 2014 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-06-29 (634 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120425) SourcePackage: lightdm UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to trusty on 2014-01-20 (65 days ago) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1298021/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

It's just *very* annoying to have to reset the volume every time I boot the PC. I set the volume from the volume icon in the system tray. I have two sound cards installed on my system (one on the motherboard and a SB Audigy), but I'm using only the Audigy. Another thing is that the mixer applet often incorrectly shows volume as muted when it's not. I'm using the hardy beta (hardy-desktop-amd64) from march 19th 2008. Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I have an Acer Extensa 5620, with GMA x3100 video chipset. When using Chrome or Chromium to play videos on Youtube the screen goes completely black and I could not revive it. The audio is played during this. I have been using Xubuntu and Chrome for about a year, and have only been experiencing this for a few months. As I recall this came in around the upgrade that brought in the little icon in the status bar, that shows Chrome running in the background even when the windows are closed. I tried reinstalling the newest LTS Xubuntu (14.04), still no good. With Firefox it works just fine. I guess it could be something about hardware acceleration, but it is a shot in the dark. So summarized: I tried to play Youtube videos on Chrome and Chromium. I was expecting it to playback as it had for years before. It did not, the screen went all black, audio started playing, and I could not bring the screen back to showing anything. This has happened a dozen times, and always happens when trying again. Thanks! [Desktop-packages] [Bug 518056] Re: cedilla appears as accented c (ć instead of ç) when typing 'c

However, every time some update on this file is applied, one looses the change, and we get back to the accented c. That means having to modify the file again, logout and login. For me this is no problem. But for my brother, mom, dad, etc, it is always something that at least makes me less proud of having convinced them to use Ubuntu, because they don't know what to do each time this happens. I think we really need a configurable keyboard layout, or at least (and that would be very easy), the inclusion of alternate layouts on install that for the dead-key options (as US-deadkey and UK-deakey), alternate layouts as US-deadkey-cedilla. ** Changed in: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1409637 Title: Gallery thumbnails of small objects are blurry/invisible Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Draw: Version: 4.2.7.2, Build ID: 420m0(Build:2) Package: libreoffice-draw 1:4.2.7-0ubuntu2 OS: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, release 14.04 Expected: high quality gallery thumbnails, of objects of any size that I've drawn using the standard drawing tools. Actual: gallery thumbnails of small (0.1" or thereabouts) objects that I've added to the gallery, appear blurry or do not appear at all. They can still be dragged into drawings though, but it requires guesswork! Thanks for any solutions you can provide. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1412701] Re: window's content corrupted when changing window size
** Changed in: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1412701 Title: window's content corrupted when changing window size Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: This imgur album has screenshots that show exactly what I'm trying to describe. http://imgur.com/a/h1CvF When the window is maximized LO Calc, Writer, Math work fine. http://imgur.com/a/h1CvF#0 When i grab the title bar and drag it moving the whole window it works ok. http://imgur.com/a/h1CvF#1 But when i grab the window's edge to manually change it's size (make it smaller) this happens: http://imgur.com/a/h1CvF#2 When I grab the window's edge and drag to make it bigger i get this: http://imgur.com/a/h1CvF#3 The visible stuff is functional. By that I mean I can still type in text (Writer) or put in data into cells (Calc) open menus like "View", "Tools", "Edit" - but only if I can see them, of course. After maximizing the window everything is back to normal - no data lost, nothing crashes, all back to normal. As I mentioned above it affected LO Math, Calc and Writer which I use. I don't know about other LO programs.
