[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1620557] Re: weather.noaa.gov was shut down

2016-09-12 Thread Lanoxx
Dmitry, does uploaded mean that the package is already available for
testing or do I need to wait until someone has confirmed the upload. If
so, where can I track the upload status?

Bug description:
The provider which libgweather was using was shut down in August.

We need to update libgweather in Xenial to new upstream micro release,
3.18.2, which switched to a new METAR data provider.

Impact: this affects all libgweather-using applications, makes them
  unable to retrieve weather data.

Test Case: make sure Weather applet in gnome-applets is able to
  display weather information.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1586223] Re: Xorg crash in Ubuntu 16.04 with Nvidia driver

2016-06-05 Thread Lanoxx
I have the same issue, about every second time when I resume from
suspend then Xorg crashes and I am returned to the ligthdm login screen.
I have alle the recent updates and I also already upgraded to the latest
nvidia driver without success. This is really annoying because every
time this happens I am loosing my session state.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 60448] Re: .xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space

2016-05-29 Thread Lanoxx
I just stumbled across this bug report, while searching for xsession-
errors. There are currently 3330 bugs involving xsession-errors:

https://launchpad.net/+search?field.text=xession-errors

I wonder how its possible to even find any useful information in such an
amount of open bugs. Since Ubuntu is moving to the systemd journal its
probably best to close most of those bugs?

.xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space

Status in gdm package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in kdebase package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xinit source package in Dapper:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Hi,

I'm running Kubuntu Dapper, freshly dist-upgraded, on a Compaq
Presario V2610CA laptop, with no particular esoteric configuration.

In the past 2 weeks, my disk space has been saturated **TWICE**, i.e.
up to 100% occ. on a 60 GB disk with 40 GB previously free, as
reported by the "df -h" command (in fact app. 10 MB was still
available, just enough to be able to boot/login!). The cause of these
events is what seems an ever-growing .xsession-errors file in one user
directory. i.e. /home/user. After a quick search on Google, I've
found 2 similar reports (one concerning Dapper, the other OpenSuse):

  http://www.nabble.com/X-error-log-t1364627.html

  http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2005-10/msg00044.html

However, I didn't find anything related to this problem on Launchpad...

It 's quite possible that something is going wrong with my system and
is filling the .xsession-errors file with various reports. I did not
have the chance to pinpoint what's going wrong since my only concern
was to prevent my system from completely crashing. That's why I
deleted the file without trying to look at its content (my system was
saturated to a point that I could not receive one simple e-mail, Kmail
complaining about the lack of disk space...). The only thing I know
is that since 2 weeks, I use more frequently Skype and I have created
a second user account for my wife to be able to manger her e-mails
with Kmail and browse the Web with Konqueror a little bit. Nothing so
  complex or heavy...

Anyway, this report is not about what's going wrong with my system,
but instead about the fact that an error-log file, like .xsession-
errors, that is supposed to be useful to track problems, should not be
the cause of a major critical problem like the lack of disk space! I
don't know what would be a satifying solution, but in my case I've set
up a script to erase this file in root and all users directory at each
hour, by putting an executable file with this content in
  /etc/cron.hourly:

  rm /home/*/.xsession-errors*
  rm /root/.xsession-errors*

  Thanks for your attention.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1443456] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in fbBltOne()

2015-09-21 Thread Lanoxx
@Patrik
I bought a AMD based laptop for my mother and the LTS version was unable to run
on it, it kept crashing, had display errors, the mouse did not work and many
other problems. So I had no choice then to install 14.10 at that time. When the
support ended I upgraded to 15.04 recently and then this bug started to surface.

In general I would expect canonical to improve their policy for
backporting bugs. Really, how useful is a release (with supposed
support), when bugs are not fixed and fixes only make it into the
development version that is still weeks out until a release.

What are users who are getting this bug supposed to do? If users are
unable to use LibreOffice this makes Ubuntu quite unusable for people
who mainly use their computer for editing documents.

Dear Martin Pitt,

is there any chance this will be backported to Ubuntu 14.04? Is upowerd

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1374945] Re: Known applications list box is very small

Title:
Known applications list box is very small

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “gnome-panel” source package in Trusty:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
(Parts copied from Lanoxx's message on gnome-flashback-list)

  = Impact =
The Show list of known applications box collapses to a very small list
where only one or two entries are visible.

  = Development Fix =
This patch were applied in 3.8.1 (available in Utopic):

  https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-
  panel/commit/?id=6d7833a6d41c4566eeb4f0f7ef2cbb94d42bfac7

With this patch it should resize together with the dialog window and
in the default view there are at least 5 items visible. Besides that
Alberts and me took very good care not to change the design or
behaviour, I am quite sure it is suitable for an SRU.

  = Stable Fix =
The patch is cherry-picked in a proposed update for Trusty.

  = Test Case =
  * Press Alt+F2 to open the Run Command dialog.
  * Select Show list of known applications.
  * There should be at least 5 applications visible.

  = Regression Potential =
Minimal regression potential, just UI change.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 965953] Re: Indicator menus are too short and scroll when opened from screen bottom

2014-03-09 Thread Lanoxx
I have been inserting debugging in formation and here is a trace that I
am getting when I click on the Skype entry in the indicator applet. For
some reason, whenever the items in a menu change, then all items of the
menu are removed and then inserted again. For Skype this seems to happen
every single time I open the menu. When I open other menu items such as
bluetooth or Ubuntu One, then the entries are not removed and inserted.
But the menu simply opens. However I can reproduce the same phenomen
with network-manager. When I open the menu and then pull the network
cable I can see how all items get removed and then re-inserted.

Indicator-Applet-Message: size_allocate: New height: 378

From the trace I can see there are 20 items removed from the Skype menu,
but 21 added. This explains the 22px size difference between the first
and last size_allocate call. I have not measured this, but it seems the
menu is painted with a height of 356px while at the end it has 378px
thus requiring scrolling.

Note that the menu is a member of 'IndicatorObjectEntry' (from
libindicator) and indicator-applet has no control over adding or
removing entries.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 965953] Re: Indicator menus are too short and scroll when opened from screen bottom

2014-03-07 Thread Lanoxx
@Ian Lane:

The issue happens only when the panel is at the bottom, not at the top.
The issue also most frequently happens with Skype, but also sometimes
with other applets such as network-manager or dropbox. It appears
particularly after the menuitems in the menu change, such as when a new
Wireless network has been detected or the network adaper looses/gains a
connection. Try pulling the network cabel from your notebook and the
network-manager menu will collapse to 0px height. After that only a
restart of the applet can fix the issue.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am assuming that the effort does not
increase if the fix is backported to two lines instead of one? This is
probably a mostly automatic procedure, or not?

And it could after all make a few people happy :)

The upstream bug has now a working patch for the problem. If it cannot
be backported then it should probably arrive in Gnome 3.8

--- a/gio/gunixmounts.c
+++ b/gio/gunixmounts.c

+ /* We ignore bind fstab entries, as we ignore bind mounts anyway */

Maybe some of the Ubuntu developers can look at it, and commend if this
patch is eligible for a Stable Release Update?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 886327] Re: Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem

Seems this is fixed upstream starting from 3.6

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem

Status in Nautilus:
  Expired
Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  What happens:
In Nautilus, when exploring a mountable filesystem of a device (having it
open in the active window/tab), unmounting this device by the unmount icon on
the side panel causes whole window to close, having immediately followed
unmounting. If the currently explored folder isn't the one on the filesystem
that we unmount, then nothing happens to Nautilus window.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Mount a filesystem.
  2. Open Nautilus and explore the content of said filesystem.
  3. Unmount said filesystem, for example using the unmount icon on the side
panel.
  4. In the current state of things, Nautilus window will close immediately due
to unmount.

  What should happen:
After unmounting an actively explored filesystem, the window/tab should
change its focus to a default element, such as computer:/// - like it was
before, or perhaps /media, /home?

  Alternatively:
Because some consider the desired behaviour as a bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/23293), there should
be a possibility to change this behaviour to the way the end user wants it to
be - either closing the Nautilus window/tab or changing address to a default
element.

It is similar to how Windows 7 explorer.exe works. I personally find
this annoying - I have close to twenty partitions total and I like to
unmount those on which work I have currently finished without fear of
  closing the program itself.

It is only a matter of the last few days/weeks that I experienced this
behaviour. Some time ago it used to work as described in What should
  happen section.

Title:
No resolving after upgrade from Ubuntu-Secure-12.04 to 12.10 beta

Status in Ubuntu-Secure-Remix:
  Fix Committed
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I'm assuming (based on the prefix of /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf)
that this is a network-manager issue, though I'm not certain.

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 1 from a more-or-less stock
installation of Ubuntu 12.04 (it had only been installed for about 3-4
hours before the upgrade). This means that I am now using network-
manager 0.9.6.0-0ubuntu7. On startup, network-manager connects to my
router without any issues, but I am then unable to resolve any domain
names (beyond localhost); I can't browse to any websites, ping any
servers using their domain names, etc. There were no problems doing
any of this while using 12.04, and I did not do anything other than
perform the upgrade to 12.10 Beta 1 before this happened, so what I
was expecting to happen was that I would continue to be able to use
  DNS as usual.

On poking around a bit, I discovered that dnsmasq is running as it
should be (listening on 127.0.1.1) but that the config file that it is
trying to use, /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf, is completely empty. This
appears to be the source ofthe problem, as I can fix the issue by
  doing the following:

  1) Kill the /usr/sbin/dnsmasq process that is automatically started (by
network-manager?).
  2) Manually create /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf and add lines such as the
following (this line identifies an OpenDNS server):

  server=208.67.222.222

  3) Manually start the /usr/sbin/dnsmasq using exactly the same options
that were passed to it when it was started automatically.

So, I'm guessing this file should be non-empty. (Another workaround,
by the way, is to manually create an /etc/resolv.conf file with
appropriate nameserver lines and then restart the networking service,
but AFAIK that solution simply bypasses dnsmasq entirely.)

No resolving after upgrade from Ubuntu-Secure-12.04 to 12.10 beta

Status in Ubuntu-Secure-Remix:
  Fix Committed
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

  2) Manually create /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf and add lines such as the
following (this line identifies an OpenDNS server):

  server=208.67.222.222

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 452049] Re: Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

2012-10-14 Thread Lanoxx
This surprises me, because I am under 12.04 and do see this bug, its
actually present since several years.

The problem lies in the code of glib. Nautilus actually has some code in
place to differentiate between bind mounted mount points and other mount
points. But glib (gio) is not properly handling this case, so the check
in nautilus is never reached.

Title:
Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

Status in The G Library - GLib:
  Confirmed
Status in Nautilus:
  New
Status in “glib2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

  What happens:
  1. mount a folder a to point b with the -bind option in /etc/fstab, for
example:
   /media/data /home/username/MyDocuments none
bind,user=username,group=username 0 0
  2. reboot and then open nautilus
  3. nautilus will show the new mount point in the places sidebar but it will
give you an error if you click on the mount point:
  Unable to mount MyDocuments
mount: according to mtab, /media/data is already mounted on
/home/username/MyDocuments
  mount failed

  What should happen:
  1. nautilus should not show these binded folders since they are well
accessible through the filesystem
  2. if the mounted folder (e.g. /mount/data) is a block device then it will
appear in the places sidebar anyway and thus it is not necessary to show the
mount point again
  3. if the mounted folder is a normal folder from an existing file system then
its accessible both from the original location and the newly binded location,
thus the is no need to show it in places again
  4. this is quite annoying

  Additional Information:
  This bug persists in Lucid

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: amd64
  Date: Thu Oct 15 12:04:11 2009

Ok, I figured it out. There is actually a simple fix for it:

just call this

panel_applet_set_background_widget(applet, GTK_WIDGET(applet));
//passing applet for the first and second parameter

when the applet is being initialized.

  transparency-fix-ubuntu/ )

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 561294] Re: Not a helpful or appropiate error message displayed

2012-03-03 Thread Lanoxx
I aggree in that this message should at least state which client is
responsible for this error. Like this it is impossible to debug and find
out what is causing this issue.

Title:
Not a helpful or appropiate error message displayed

Status in “metacity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: metacity

running compiz --replace as trying to debug an issue with lucid Beta 2 and I
get the following output -

Window manager warning: last_user_time (1271002643) is greater than
comparison timestamp (799652). This most likely represents a buggy client
sending inaccurate timestamps in messages such as _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW. Trying to
work around...
Window manager warning: 0x4600028 (Social bro) appears to be one of the
offending windows with a timestamp of 1271002643. Working around...
Window manager warning: Received a _NET_WM_MOVERESIZE message for 0x4600028
(Social bro); these messages lack timestamps and therefore suck.

while the error output is helpful surely a user seeing these messages
lack timestamps and therefore suck. is not at all helpful and should
have a more appropriate error message displayed

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 561294] Re: Not a helpful or appropiate error message displayed

2012-03-03 Thread Lanoxx
I didn't notice before but the small string (Social bro) is actually
the file name. I would suggest to make the buffer for this string bigger
so the whole program name is visible and additionally also show the
filename of the application.

I am also seeing a lot of these message in ~/.xsession-errors

Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a
timestamp of 0 for 0x2c000d1 (Mozilla Fi)
Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0
timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed.
