[Desktop-packages] [Bug 60448] Re: .xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space
I just stumbled across this bug report, while searching for xsession- errors. There are currently 3330 bugs involving xsession-errors: https://launchpad.net/+search?field.text=xession-errors I wonder how its possible to even find any useful information in such an amount of open bugs. Since Ubuntu is moving to the systemd journal its probably best to close most of those bugs? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/60448 Title: .xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space Status in gdm package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in kdebase package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in xinit source package in Dapper: Won't Fix Bug description: Hi, I'm running Kubuntu Dapper, freshly dist-upgraded, on a Compaq Presario V2610CA laptop, with no particular esoteric configuration. In the past 2 weeks, my disk space has been saturated **TWICE**, i.e. up to 100% occ. on a 60 GB disk with 40 GB previously free, as reported by the "df -h" command (in fact app. 10 MB was still available, just enough to be able to boot/login!). The cause of these events is what seems an ever-growing .xsession-errors file in one user directory. i.e. /home/user. After a quick search on Google, I've found 2 similar reports (one concerning Dapper, the other OpenSuse): http://www.nabble.com/X-error-log-t1364627.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2005-10/msg00044.html However, I didn't find anything related to this problem on Launchpad... It 's quite possible that something is going wrong with my system and is filling the .xsession-errors file with various reports. I did not have the chance to pinpoint what's going wrong since my only concern was to prevent my system from completely crashing. That's why I deleted the file without trying to look at its content (my system was saturated to a point that I could not receive one simple e-mail, Kmail complaining about the lack of disk space...). The only thing I know is that since 2 weeks, I use more frequently Skype and I have created a second user account for my wife to be able to manger her e-mails with Kmail and browse the Web with Konqueror a little bit. Nothing so complex or heavy... Anyway, this report is not about what's going wrong with my system, but instead about the fact that an error-log file, like .xsession- errors, that is supposed to be useful to track problems, should not be the cause of a major critical problem like the lack of disk space! I don't know what would be a satifying solution, but in my case I've set up a script to erase this file in root and all users directory at each hour, by putting an executable file with this content in /etc/cron.hourly: rm /home/*/.xsession-errors* rm /root/.xsession-errors* Thanks for your attention. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1443456] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in fbBltOne()
@Patrik I bought a AMD based laptop for my mother and the LTS version was unable to run on it, it kept crashing, had display errors, the mouse did not work and many other problems. So I had no choice then to install 14.10 at that time. When the support ended I upgraded to 15.04 recently and then this bug started to surface. In general I would expect canonical to improve their policy for backporting bugs. Really, how useful is a release (with supposed support), when bugs are not fixed and fixes only make it into the development version that is still weeks out until a release. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1443456 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in fbBltOne() Status in X.Org X server: Fix Released Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in xorg-server source package in Vivid: Confirmed Status in xorg-server source package in Wily: Fix Released Bug description: system restarts when trying to open libreoffice writer, just after the installation of the latest updates (after a fresh install) ProblemType: Crash DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04 Package: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.17.1-0ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.19.0-13.13-generic 3.19.3 Uname: Linux 3.19.0-13-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: ApportVersion: 2.17-0ubuntu2 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: compiz CompositorUnredirectDriverBlacklist: '(nouveau|Intel).*Mesa 8.0' CompositorUnredirectFSW: true CrashCounter: 1 Date: Mon Apr 13 16:32:19 2015 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: vivid DistroVariant: ubuntu ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/Xorg GraphicsCard: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 965953] Re: Indicator menus are too short and scroll when opened from screen bottom
I have been inserting debugging in formation and here is a trace that I am getting when I click on the Skype entry in the indicator applet. For some reason, whenever the items in a menu change, then all items of the menu are removed and then inserted again. For Skype this seems to happen every single time I open the menu. When I open other menu items such as bluetooth or Ubuntu One, then the entries are not removed and inserted. But the menu simply opens. However I can reproduce the same phenomen with network-manager. When I open the menu and then pull the network cable I can see how all items get removed and then re-inserted. This explains the 22px size difference between the first and last size_allocate call. I have not measured this, but it seems the menu is painted with a height of 356px while at the end it has 378px thus requiring scrolling. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 965953] Re: Indicator menus are too short and scroll when opened from screen bottom
@Ian Lane: The issue happens only when the panel is at the bottom, not at the top. The issue also most frequently happens with Skype, but also sometimes with other applets such as network-manager or dropbox. It appears particularly after the menuitems in the menu change, such as when a new Wireless network has been detected or the network adaper looses/gains a connection. Try pulling the network cabel from your notebook and the network-manager menu will collapse to 0px height. After that only a restart of the applet can fix the issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/965953 Title: Indicator menus are too short and scroll when opened from screen bottom Status in GTK+ GUI Toolkit: Invalid Status in Indicator Applet: Confirmed Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: The indicator applet, installed by default in classic session of Precise, appears with just some up and down scroll arrows, and I have to scroll down before it fills in and shows the 3 items, and then the scroll arrows disappear. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 886327] Re: Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem
Seems this is fixed upstream starting from 3.6 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886327 Title: Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem Status in Nautilus: Expired Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: What happens: In Nautilus, when exploring a mountable filesystem of a device (having it open in the active window/tab), unmounting this device by the unmount icon on the side panel causes whole window to close, having immediately followed unmounting. If the currently explored folder isn't the one on the filesystem that we unmount, then nothing happens to Nautilus window. Steps to reproduce: 1. Mount a filesystem. 2. Open Nautilus and explore the content of said filesystem. 3. Unmount said filesystem, for example using the unmount icon on the side panel. 4. In the current state of things, Nautilus window will close immediately due to unmount. What should happen: After unmounting an actively explored filesystem, the window/tab should change its focus to a default element, such as computer:/// - like it was before, or perhaps /media, /home? Alternatively: Because some consider the desired behaviour as a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/23293), there should be a possibility to change this behaviour to the way the end user wants it to be - either closing the Nautilus window/tab or changing address to a default element. It is similar to how Windows 7 explorer.exe works. I personally find this annoying - I have close to twenty partitions total and I like to unmount those on which work I have currently finished without fear of closing the program itself. It is only a matter of the last few days/weeks that I experienced this behaviour. Some time ago it used to work as described in What should happen section. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1051348] Re: No resolving after upgrade from Ubuntu-Secure-12.04 to 12.10 beta

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 1 from a more-or-less stock installation of Ubuntu 12.04 (it had only been installed for about 3-4 hours before the upgrade). This means that I am now using network- manager 0.9.6.0-0ubuntu7. On startup, network-manager connects to my router without any issues, but I am then unable to resolve any domain names (beyond localhost); I can't browse to any websites, ping any servers using their domain names, etc. There were no problems doing any of this while using 12.04, and I did not do anything other than perform the upgrade to 12.10 Beta 1 before this happened, so what I was expecting to happen was that I would continue to be able to use DNS as usual. On poking around a bit, I discovered that dnsmasq is running as it should be (listening on 127.0.1.1) but that the config file that it is trying to use, /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf, is completely empty. This appears to be the source ofthe problem, as I can fix the issue by doing the following: 1) Kill the /usr/sbin/dnsmasq process that is automatically started (by network-manager?). 2) Manually create /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf and add lines such as the following (this line identifies an OpenDNS server): server=208.67.222.222 3) Manually start the /usr/sbin/dnsmasq using exactly the same options that were passed to it when it was started automatically. So, I'm guessing this file should be non-empty. (Another workaround, by the way, is to manually create an /etc/resolv.conf file with appropriate nameserver lines and then restart the networking service, but AFAIK that solution simply bypasses dnsmasq entirely.) Ok, I figured it out.
