RE: PWG+OpenPrinting meetup 2023
Hi Zdenek, Regarding packaging pappl-retrofit and printer applications, looking at the pappl-retrofit based snaps from Till Kamppeter, I suspect the existing Fedora pappl package might need to be modified. For example, extract from ps-printer-app's snapcraft.yaml file which modifies pappl's default build settings: https://github.com/OpenPrinting/ps-printer-app/blob/master/snap/snapcraft.yaml pappl: ... override-build: | set -eux # Raise the supported number of vendor-specific options/attributes in # PAPPL to 256, as the original 32 can be too small for some busy PPD # files perl -p -i -e 's/(define\s+PAPPL_MAX_VENDOR\s+)32/\1 256/' pappl/printer.h # De-activate log-rotating. It does not work with the forked processes # of the filters perl -p -i -e 's/(system->logmaxsize\s+=).*/\1 0;/' pappl/system.c # As we do not use PAPPL's own backends but the CUPS backends using the # "cups" device scheme of pappl-retrofit, we let the manual "Network # Printer" device on the "Add Printer" page of the web interface use a # "cups:socket://..." URI instead of simply "socket://..." perl -p -i -e 's/(httpAssembleURI\(.*?)"socket"(.*?\))/\1"cups:socket"\2/' pappl/system-webif.c # PAPPL's build system does not insert the LDFLAGS when linking. # Patching Makedefs.in to fix this perl -p -i -e 's/^(\s*DSOFLAGS\s*=\s*\S*\s+)/\1\$\(LDFLAGS\) /' Makedefs.in Cheers, Doug -Original Message- From: Zdenek Dohnal Sent: Thursday, May 18, 2023 4:26 AM To: Development discussions related to Fedora Subject: PWG+OpenPrinting meetup 2023 Hi all, I've joined annual PWG+OpenPrinting virtual meetup where the news and statuses from the current printing development are discussed. The main points are: - cups-filters 2.0 betas and release candidates are released and present in Fedora 38 - since new cups-filters are in Fedora 38, nothing stands in the way of packaging pappl-retrofit and printer applications based on it into Fedora as RPMs - any volunteers are welcome! - CUPS 2.4.x, CUPS 2.5 and CUPS 3.0 are delayed: - 2.4.x - there are several regressions I haven't able to tackle yet, but I hope there is a new version in a month - 2.5 - OAuth support took lot of time to implement - 3.0 - libcups (its version 3.0) has a beta which developers which uses libcups 2.0 can compile and link their applications and see what changed between major release - GTK (its version 4) has merged support for Common Print Dialog Backends - universal print dialog, which can work not only with cups, but with other possible backends (like google cloud print) - WIP on Printer Setup Tool for GNOME Control Center - full support for driverless printers and printers via printer applications The full report is attached. I would also note that the work being done here does not obviate the future return of a community-developed graphical frontend for Anaconda. For example, the previous architecture made it impossible for anyone to consider developing a Qt based frontend for Anaconda. That option is now open for the first time in Anaconda's history. Please, take into account that we are not an application which stays open on background for hours (usually), so you can't put this to the same level as music player or similar apps. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that every usable machine as desktop PC, is able to open one web page for the installation process. From the other point, I wonder how much memory the VNC client (solution right now) is taking. And security point with VNC is (based on my understanding) maybe worse than HTTPS browsers. Hard to say what technology has the same memory footprint as GTK3. I think, there are not many options. From the other point, using this logic in the past, we would still be using ncurses based installations. Don't take me wrong, I see your point and memory footprint is important. Hi Tomáš, I have been looking at this one: > python-metar jdekloe and I think it needs to be fixed upstream before it can be build for python3.12. Of course the failing tests can be disabled, but that may just hide that the module is crippled. So I opened this issue upstream: https://github.com/python-metar/python-metar/issues/175 Best regards, Jos. As mentioned in previous email - if you see a "Rebuilt for Python 3.12" (or similar) commit in your package, please don't rebuild it in regular rawhide or another rawhide side tag. If you need to, please let us know, so we can coordinate. If you'd like to build a package after we already rebuilt it, you should be able to build it in the side tag via: on branch rawhide: $ fedpkg build --target=f39-python $ koji wait-repo f39-python --build Note that it will take a while before all the essential packages are rebuilt, so don't expect all your dependencies to be available right away. Please, don't attempt to build your package in the side tag before we do. When in trouble, ask here or on IRC (#fedora-python on Libera.Chat). Ping me (thrnciar) or Miro (mhroncok) if you need to talk to us. Let us know if you have any questions. Here is the list of packages that failed to build but their dependencies are available. If you'd like to help us, any fixes are welcome. Please build the package with --target=f39-python if you fix it. If your package is failing with ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'imp', this is happening because Python 3.12 removed the long deprecated imp module. As a stopgap measure, you can BuildRequire python3-zombie-imp package, which allows you to import the imp module even on Python 3.12. The simple answer is maybe in principle but in practice it's very hard as numerous previous threads will tell you. The tar balls from the npmjs registry which constitute the released versions of node packages frequently contain such things often without the original source or any of the tooling to build from it. The alternative is packaging from the upstream git but even then, and even if it is well maintained with version tags, there are often huge dependency chains to get all the tools needed to actually do the builds. I thought Fedora policy required shipping actual source code, in which case this alternative is the only option allowed. Yes you're right, and there's long been a question of exactly what constitutes that with javascript packages. When I was packaging and reviewing Node stuff I certainly tried to do so where it was in any way feasible. Minimisers weren't usually too bad - you can always just skip them after all - but once you start dealing with transpilers it can get a lot harder plus you often wind up having to write your own build script because the upstream one is using one of a dozen different Node based tools each of which has hundreds of dependent modules you would need to package. When you install a Fedora Flatpak, the digest of the content being installed is checked against the checksums embedded in the index downloaded from (e.g. https://registry.fedoraproject.org/index/static?label:org.flatpak.ref:exists=1=linux=amd64=latest). These indexes are statically generated from data queried from Bodhi and Koji and downloaded from a static web server directly from Fedora bypassing the CDN. The most obvious way to get malicious content into this index would be to inject it at build time, by adding it upstream, infiltrating the Fedora project, hacking a Fedora contributor, etc. In all of these cases, if we had container signatures, robosignatory would happily sign it when the update was created. Yes, someone could hack the server hosting the index, get write-access to the mount hosting the indexes, or find some specific way to exploit the indexing process. And in those cases, having checked signatures would help. The first two cases would seem to imply a widespread breach of Fedora infrastructure that would likely affect security of builds as well. What would be needed to implement signatures would be roughly: - Implement container signatures in robosignatory/sigul - Implement distribution of signatures (probably easiest if we move registry.fedoraproject.org to quay.io as planned for a while) - Implement checkingo of container signatures in the Flatpak client One thing that helps now is that for a long time there was a lot of uncertainty in where signatures were going in the container world, but at this point, at least Red Hat parts of the container world seems to be solidly behind the approach of https://github.com/sigstore/cosign. (Still a lot of details / moving parts that would have to be researched.) - Owen ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue

Minified JS and CSS in Node packages
Looking at the source to llparse reveals that it contains minified versions of lodash, source-map, js-yaml, diff, and snprintf-js. The corresponding source code also appears to be present, but my understanding of Fedora policy is that the minified versions should not be in a Fedora source package. I wonder how much of that memory use would go away if instead of using Firefox, the web content ran in an embedded WebKitGTK+ webview. Browser security is not a concern here because in this case the web content is trusted, and this would also allow using WebKitGTK+’s URL redirection features instead of HTTP over localhost. That said, I do want to check that the new Anaconda installer and all of its transitive dependencies will be built from source on Fedora infrastructure. That means _actual_ sources as found in the SCM repository, not the minified blobs one finds on NPM. Web stuff has historically been extremely packaging-unfriendly for this reason, and the Node ecosystem has a long history of supply-chain attacks. Using a React-based UI should mean finding the original source code to all of the transitive NPM dependencies, then rebuilding all of them on Fedora infrastructure. -- Sincerely, Demi Marie Obenour (she/her/hers) ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue

Dire emergencies like these are extremely rare, but when they do occur, everybody needs to work together to get updates out to all users ASAP. That's true for every distro. Hypothetically speaking, if I were ever unfortunate enough to be responsible for an emergency scenario like that, I'd still want enough basic QA to at least ensure that the update won't eat your disk, but such decisions would surely be handled on a case-by-case basis. In a more normal situation, updates take a few days to prepare. I really don't think there's any problem with how CVEs are handled in CentOS Stream *except* for the problem I mentioned earlier about maintainers forgetting to push package updates to CentOS Stream by mistake. We need a better process to ensure human error doesn't result in CentOS Stream missing security or non-security updates. On 03/07/2023 01:28, Michael Catanzaro wrote: OK, host shared libraries and flatpaked libraries will be loaded at the same time, but I really doubt that's going to be at all significant. Include dozens of bundled libraries here too. Only runtimes can use shared memory. They do consume significant disk space if your disk is really small. ostree deduplication is pretty good, though (and OCI images are deduplicated too) Many Flatpaks from Flathub still use the old runtimes. Each runtime consumes approximately 1 GB of disk space. They need to start doing mass rebuilds with every new major release of the runtime. As a matter of strategy, packaging applications is fine, but nowadays it is *optional*. I don't think so. Our most popular applications are nowadays available from Flathub or other third-party sources, and users are going to install them regardless of whether we package them. Sorry, but I can't trust them since they allow uploading pre-built blobs and DEB repacks for popular and even for security-focused applications: - Firefox (uploaded as ostree blob without sources, has disabled ASLR and hardening); - OBS Studio (uploaded as ostree blob); - Element (DEB repack: https://github.com/flathub/im.riot.Riot/blob/master/im.riot.Riot.yaml#L69-L70); - Signal (DEB repack: https://github.com/flathub/org.signal.Signal/blob/master/org.signal.Signal.yaml#L65-L66); - Blender (static binary repack: https://github.com/flathub/org.blender.Blender/blob/master/org.blender.Blender.json#L150-L151); - VS Codium (DEB repack: https://github.com/flathub/com.vscodium.codium/blob/master/com.vscodium.codium.yaml#L98-L99); - many others: https://github.com/search?q=org%3Aflathub+.deb=code They need to forbid uploading pre-built blobs and repacks. All packages (except proprietary ones) should be built on their infrastructure. Flatpaks without sandbox holes are also dramatically more secure than Fedora RPMs, which is why I'm *really* interested in Flatpaks. Also, many Flathub's apps don't use Flatpak isolation at all: - https://github.com/search?q=org%3Aflathub+--filesystem%3Dhost=code - https://github.com/search?q=org%3Aflathub+--filesystem%3Dhome=code They need to restrict such holes. Re: Distro feature macros: a replacement for many %if rhel/fedora/amzn
Dne 02. 07. 23 v 23:15 Smith, Stewart via devel napsal(a): 3. Per distro package features (in some include file somewhere? Probably not the SPEC file itself… maybe an include to it?) In the Avahi example above, the WITH_PYTHON is distro dependent for some reason, but is local to the package, it isn’t something that’s distro-wide. Perhaps a package-local distro file? i.e. adding in something like the following in the package spec file Source1234: %{_vendor}-macros.inc %include %{_vendor}-macros.inc and then having the include have the %if{amzn/rhel/fedora} <>= VERSION logic there Thoughts? My real world example: %if 0%{?fedora} || 0%{?rhel} >= 8 BuildRequires: (python%{python3_pkgversion}-tomli if python%{python3_pkgversion} < 3.11) %else BuildRequires: python%{python3_pkgversion}-tomli %endif # grammar %if 0%{?fedora} || 0%{?rhel} > 8 BuildRequires: python3dist(lark-parser) %endif This will require macro %distro_has_python-lark-parser (can I use dashes in macro?). In this case it is forwad only, but if there would be; %if 0%{?rhel} && 0%{?rhel} < 8 then I will have to negate this formul (and not make mistake) or I will need to add it to RHEL7 retroactively. Which takes time and in the mean time the builds will be broken. Or you had to define the macro yourself on the top of the spec file. And once you add it there, it will likely stay there forever. And wene if you implement it your way, then you will have to keep for transition period of 10 years the oldfashioned %if-rhel. It seems to me that it would be cat'n'mouse game with no winner. It seems better to me to use the rich dependencies like: BuildRequires: (python%{python3_pkgversion}-tomli if python%{python3_pkgversion} < 3.11) I reckognize though that this cannot be applied in all situations. -- Miroslav Suchy, RHCA Red Hat, Manager, Packit and CPT, #brno, #fedora-buildsys ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue
