Re: [slim] Should I Buy a Harmony Remote
The lastest software "update" made my Harmony 600 practically useless. As I've had the exact same problem before, I contacted support by replying to the mail from Logitech where they had told me that the problem was fixed last time. Soon after, Logitech support told me that I'd contacted the wrong department. Quite "interesting" in itself. Anyway, they promised that the "right" department would contact me promptly, to get the problem fixed. This was maybe two weeks ago. Then: Crickets. I sent a reminder. More crickets. I sent one more. Even more crickets. It's not long now, before my Harmony goes in the bin. Would I recommend that you buy a harmony? [slim] Product idea
This night I dreamt that I was browsing a second-hand shop, and I found a SB Radio as big as an old-fashioned 17" CRT monitor. The shop owner told me it was some obscure limited edition product, but it didn't cost me much second-hand. It looked and worked like a SB Radio; same design, same buttons, same screen (maybe a bit bigger than the normal one), but the unit as a whole was huge. I remember being overjoyed and wondering how it would sound when I got it home to plug it in. So there's my idea for the next-gen SB: A "Big Baby", seven kilos of raw power with a 12" bass driver and enough watts to shake the house. :D (And how about a battery apartment for a 12 V lead-acid car battery, in case you want to take it to the park?) Re: [slim] For sound quality, how important is the computer that connects to Touch?
There are two conceivable ways in which the computer can affect sound quality. In tha vast majority of cases, both are negligible. The ethernet cable can transmit noise, but ethernet is designed not to do that. Anyway, a switch or other component between the computer and the Squeezebox would isolate the SB further from the computer. Using wireless would eliminate that potential problem altogether. The power supply unit of the PC may be bad and noisy, and inject noise into the mains. This could be picked up by the amp or other analog component in the analog sound signal chain. But your house is probably full of electronic equimpent with the potential to do the same thing, so it doesn't necessarily make sense to focus especially on the PC in this regard. You'll probably gain much more, with a lot less effort, by focusing on the acoustic properties of the room, and your speakers. And/or consider digital room correction. [slim] How to hide forum threads
I found a Greasemonkey script 'on this page' (http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/eat-drink-man-woman-16/hide-those-annoying-threads-3056566.html), and made a single modification (the @include parameter) to make it work on forums.slimdevices.com. With this script, every forum thread comes with a "Ignore" link, so if it annoys you, you can simply hide it, and it won't come back. (As a bonus, you can now also hide all those sticky threads that fill up the top of each subforum, and that you never read anyway.) Unfortunately, the thread will still show on the index.php page, but when you enter the subforum itself, the script kicks in. The script runs in Greasemonkey which in turn runs in Firefox. If you have several computers (or Firefox user profiles), you'll need to install the script on each one. // ==UserScript== // @name Hide Forum Threads // @namespace ThreadFilter // @description Hides threads in Vbulletin boards. // @include http://forums.slimdevices.com/* // ==/UserScript== //*global variables var splitCh = String.fromCharCode(255); var filterseperator= ","; unsafeWindow._blockThread = function(threadid) { window.setTimeout(SetKillFile, 0, threadid); } function updateKillFile(list) { data = list.join(splitCh); window.setTimeout(GM_setValue, 0, "ThreadBlockerFilterFile", escape(data)); GM_setValue("ThreadBlockerFilterFile", escape(data)); } //adds a Thread to the Killfile function SetKillFile(killspec) { //get thread element for immediate removal var row = document.getElementById("td_threadtitle_"+killspec) row.parentNode.parentNode.removeChild(row.parentNode); var splitCh = String.fromCharCode(255); var data = ""; var list = new Array(); data = unescape(GM_getValue("ThreadBlockerFilterFile", "-")); list = data.split(splitCh); list.push(killspec); updateKillFile(list); } function addThreadIgnoreLink (thisElement) { // Adding the Ignore-Link threadid = threadid.substring(15); var link = document.createElement('a'); link.setAttribute('href', 'javascript:_blockThread("'+threadid+'")'); link.setAttribute('style', 'float:right;font-size:xx-small;'); link.innerHTML = "Ignore"; thisElement.childNodes[1].appendChild(link); } function filterThreads() { allElements = document.evaluate( '//*[@title]', document, null, XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE, null); for (var i = 0; i < allElements.snapshotLength; i++) { thisElement = allElements.snapshotItem(i); if (thisElement.nodeName.toUpperCase() == 'TD') { for( var x = 0; x < thisElement.attributes.length; x++ ) { if( thisElement.attributes[x].nodeName.toLowerCase() == 'title' ) { threadid = thisElement.getAttribute('id'); if(threadid != null) { addThreadIgnoreLink(thisElement); //Filtering Threads var data = unescape(GM_getValue("ThreadBlockerFilterFile", "-")); var list = data.split(splitCh); for (var j=0; j -- Soulkeeper Noise < Music < Silence Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94286 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Dear Squeezebox, still love you
The moment I saw a SB3 at a friend's place, in 2009, I knew that this was it. This was the solution that I dreamt about in the 1990s, but eventually pushed to the back of my mind because I thought nobody else was interested, and that it wouldn't become a reality in my lifetime. I was astounded by the elegance of the UI, how well engineered the whole thing was, and that it wasn't a cheapo low-end plastic gizmo from Hong Kong, and that it wasn't an unreasonably expensive steel brick weighing 20 pounds. Small, elegant, and there it sat between two Magnepans, sounding great. I was sold. I had a hard time figuring out what model to buy, what suited my needs. The marketing information was confusing as heck. It was almost like Logitech wanted to dazzle potential customers until they gave up. But my mind was made up. I ended up with a Duet, pretty much at random. I figured that as long as it didn't have speakers, it would probably suit my needs. Which was about right. The Controller, despite all its awkward neither-fish-nor-fowl-ness, melted my heart with its undocumented geek port and IR transmitter. I played around with using it as a second player instead of a remote, but never found a comfortable use for it. Then I found a second hand Boom for $180. So I sold sold my Tivoli model 3 bedside radio for $180, and put the boom in its place. The sound quality was superior, and now I could wake up to my own music instead of irritating garbage pop on the radio. Plus, I suddenly had a wealth of radio stations to choose from, some of them actually not that bad. And I could leave the Controller in the cradle, to serve its intended purpose for pausing and changing volume, and to be available when my SO or guests wanted to browse my music collection. Two Radios and a Touch later, and the house is full of music. I sort of want one more Touch for my headphone setup at the office, but my USB soundcard is more practical when I'm sitting by the computer anyway, so I can't allow myself that expense. Since there's no room for more squeezeboxes in my life atm, I'm content with evangelizing to my friends. I'm certain that I'm starting to drive some of them crazy by now. ;) -- Soulkeeper 'Bug 17797: Updating wiki.slimdevices.com' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17797) Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93924 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SB3 : 24/96 capable?
The SB3's DAC can do max 24/48, and I suspect this also applies to the digital out. SC/SBS/LMS will transparently transcode 24/96 files to 24/48 via SoX when playing them on your SB3. So if you want "the benefits of 24/96", you'll probably need a Touch, with or without a DAC. That being said, will you be able to hear the difference between a 24/96 track, and the same track properly downsampled to 24/48? Whether that is humanly possible, is disputed. AFAIU, nobody has yet been able to do so in a double blind test. Anyway, it's probably more cost effective to spend the money on speaker upgrades, or room treatment. -- Soulkeeper 'Bug 17797: Updating wiki.slimdevices.com' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17797) Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93763 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It seems the data is routed to your modem and back again, but as long as your modem does its job, it shouldn't be a bottleneck. The option is called "Choose library" or "Choose server" or something like that. -- Soulkeeper -that is not dead which can eternal lie. and with strange aeons even death may die.- touch (sans caps) + duet + boom + radio (portable) / dd-wrt on linksys wrt160n / sbs 7.6 on w7(x86) with avira free Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88022 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Personally I need some extra capacity for running some other stuff 24/7. But nothing that couldn't be done better in Linux I guess. I run Windows only because I'm too lazy to change old habits. -- Soulkeeper -that is not dead which can eternal lie. and with strange aeons even death may die.- touch + duet + boom + radio / wrt160n/dd-wrt / sbs 7.5.1 or higher/win7(32b)/avira free Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87968 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Ideal Server Computer?
Depends on the scenario I guess. I am using an old 1 GHz thing in a tower cabinet. It makes a bit of noise and heat, sucks in loads of dust, and guzzles electricity, but where I live it's usually so cold that the server doubles as a heater anyway. No keyboard or screen attached. But if I wanted something less power hungry, I'd consider buying a used laptop (possibly with a broken screen, so that I'd get it even cheaper) and put it in a drawer somewhere, together with two or three USB hard drives. Cables are everywhere, anyway. I've given up fighting them a long time ago. :D -- Soulkeeper -that is not dead which can eternal lie. and with strange aeons even death may die.- touch + duet + boom + radio / wrt160n/dd-wrt / sbs 7.5.1 or higher/win7(32b)/avira free Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87968 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
