I have reproduced the issue on kernel 2.6.22.17, so it looks like it's
not a kernel regression, but an X server issue.

[Bug 10592] New: [old regression] performance drop for glx after vblank patch

2008-05-02 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10592

Summary: [old regression] performance drop for glx after vblank
patch
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.20-2.6.25
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI)
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Latest working kernel version:2.6.19
Earliest failing kernel version:2.6.20
Distribution:ubuntu 8.04
Hardware Environment:ASUS P5LD2-VM ( video i945g , Pentium D )
Software Environment:
Problem Description:

This is old regression. Tested with glxgears i get this results:
v2.6.19 _1413.112_FPS_
v2.6.20 1280.060 FPS
v2.6.22 1300.116 FPS
v2.6.24 1205.895 FPS
v2.6.25-git* 1226.967 FPS

Thirst regression was pasebly introduced by vblank patch in i915:
commit ee2fae03d68e702866a8661fbee7ff2f2f3754d7
Merge: e4ddc9c... f9841a8...
Author: Linus Torvalds <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed Dec 20 23:59:07 2006 -0800

Merge branch 'drm-patches' of
master.kernel.org:/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ai

* 'drm-patches' of
master.kernel.org:/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/airlied/drm-2
  drm: Stop defining pci_pretty_name
drm: r128: comment aligment with drm git
drm: make kernel context switch same as for drm git tree.
  drm: fixup comment header style
drm: savage: compat fix from drm git.
  drm: Unify radeon offset checking.
i915_vblank_tasklet: Try harder to avoid tearing.
  DRM: handle pci_enable_device failure
  drm: fix return value check

I didn't get correct bisecting. Seems git-bisect can't correctly working with
2.9.19 tree or i did some thin really wrong, so i get this resoult:

commit e1036502e5263851259d147771226161e5ccc85a
Author: Nicolas Pitre <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Tue Dec 12 13:32:29 2006 -0500

[PATCH] remove config ordering/dependency between ucb1400-ts and sound
subsy

Commit 2d4ba4a3b9aef95d328d74a17ae84f8d658059e2 introduced a dependency
that was never meant to exist when the ac97_bus.c module was created.
Move ac97_bus.c up the directory hierarchy to make sure it is built when
selected even if sound is configured out so things work as originally
intended.

I assume that we're referring to

commit 3188a24c256bae0ed93d81d82db1f1bb6060d727
Author: =?utf-8?q?Michel_D=C3=A4nzer?= <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Mon Dec 11 18:32:27 2006 +1100

i915_vblank_tasklet: Try harder to avoid tearing.

Previously, if there were several buffer swaps scheduled for the same
vertical
blank, all but the first blit emitted stood a chance of exhibiting tearing.
In
order to avoid this, split the blits along slices of each output top to
bottom.

(and yup, that's how the Author: is recorded in git)

Unfrortunately that patch doesn't trivially revert, so I can't send you a
patch to test.

I hate to say this but repeat after me.. glxgears is not a benchmark.

I might get a chance to look at this, but the thing is unless you can show
a real regression in a real 3D app, I'm not going to go nuts over gears.

Dave.

The code changed by this commit is only executed when sync-to-vblank is
enabled, which can't be the case at the framerates above.

[Bug 10681] New: No DRM and DRI support for Trident-based chips

2008-05-11 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10681

Summary: No DRM and DRI support for Trident-based chips
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.x
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI)
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Latest working kernel version: 2.4.x (supposedly)

Earliest failing kernel version: unknown (to me)

Distribution: all

Hardware Environment: All Video cards with Trident (or Trident-based, as VIA
PLE133) chips, tested in a Trident Cyberblade i1

Software Environment: Tested in Xubuntu (8.04), Ubuntu (6.10/7.04/7.10/8.04),
Mandriva (One 2008 Spring), openSUSE (10.3).

Problem Description:

There is no DRM kernel module for Trident-based chips, so there is no specific
DRM support for those chips (mostly present in old laptops from Compaq -at
least Armada and Presario series-; Toshiba -at least some of the Portage and
Stellite series-; Hewlett-Packard -don't know the series, sorry-; probably many
others).

If I'm not mistaken, having not DRM support implies having no DRI for those
chips, even if the trident_dri driver actually exists. I'm positive that the
Cyberblade series of the Trident Chips have no DRI support at all, and I've
tried to track the problem, which seems to reside in the absence of specific
DRM support for them.

Tried with last DRM and Mesa CVS via git, but no luck (in Madriva One 2008
Spring). Since the DRM support is a kernel module, I'm posting the issue here
as an enhancement, but it's actually not a problem, and nothing it's actually
failing.

In all the distros tested, the DRI module is succesfully loaded at X startup.
All the proper lines (as "Load "DRI"" or "Section "DRI"" with "Mode 0666" and
others) needed in Xorg.conf are present.

Steps to reproduce:

Simple get a box with a Trident card, install the distro of your choice, and
run glxinfo | grep direct to see that there's no direct rendering support. Look
at the drm kernel modelues, and no trident-specific module will be present.

Any extra information that I can provide, I will gladly try to.
If my post in this bugzilla is in the wrong place, please forgive me for
wasting your time.
Also, I apologize for my english, which is poor at best, I hope the report
isn't too confuse.

Minimal documentation is available from VIA (included in the PLE133 chipset
docs if you have the right version). You will however have to write the driver
;)

[Bug 10681] No DRM and DRI support for Trident-based chips

--- Comment #2 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-05-14 13:37 ---
Oh, well. I'm screwed then... ;)

Two questions still haunt me by night, There actually was DRI support in the
2.4.x branch of the kernel? If so, Why it got broken?

Anyway, I suppose the source is avialable form freedesktop.org and kernel.org,
so I could check it; and make sure I'm absolutely inable to understan a single
line =P

Thanks for the response.

ps: are you Alan Hourihane, the One that go through the swamp of VIA
documentation and ended up with a working driver?

In my email from above I mentioned that X behaves strangly and suspend/resume
does not work. The latter seems to be solved with the patch from
http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/5/13/188, the former with the patch as given above.

I confirm that for proper operation I still need the drm-revert patch mentioned
above under patch. Fortunately the other one mentioned in Comment #1 has been
included.

[Bug 10985] New: backlight doesn't come on after resume with i915 video

2008-06-26 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10985

Summary: backlight doesn't come on after resume with i915 video
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.26-rc8
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI)
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Latest working kernel version: n/a
Earliest failing kernel version: 2.6.26-rc6
Distribution: Debian (sid)
Hardware Environment: Thinkpad X40 (82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device)
Software Environment: n/a
Problem Description:

After performing a suspend to RAM, my laptop's backlight does not come back on.
Pressing the brightness adjust keys on the laptop has no effect, neither does
prodding /sys/class/backlight/thinkpad_screen/brightness,

With 2.6.25 and earlier, the software tools to manage suspend would perform
quirks (S3 "bios" and "mode") which result in the backlight coming back on
properly.

I first noticed this because pm-utils (the software bit that handles suspend on
behalf of hal and gnome-power-manager etc.) performs a check for 2.6.26 and if
found, doesn't do userspace quirking, assuming that the kernel drivers handle
it all instead.

Steps to reproduce:

boot in single user mode
suspend
resume

On Matthew Garrett's advice, I booted to single user mode, and ran
intel_reg_dumper (from the x86-video-intel git repo) before loading i915,
afterwards, and after resuming from a suspend. This is the output from before
loading i915. After is identical.

One could argue whether it's technically a kernel regression, but it should be
resolved either in the kernel or in userspace before 2.6.26.

Jon, could you please try suspending by

# echo mem > /sys/power/state

(obviously as root) and see what happens?

I've just attempted

 * echo mem > /sys/power/state
 * pm-suspend
 * pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode

with 2.6.25 and 2.6.26-rc8, both in X and without X.

In all cases, echo mem > /sys/power/state worked (with 2.6.25 and 2.6.26)

In the case of pm-suspend, only explicit quirks with 2.6.25 worked.

Does this absolve the kernel? I'm a bit puzzled.

I am now trying to figure out what pm-suspend does on top of echo mem >
/sys/power/state and after resuming in my case.

Hi folks, after some more digging it seems pm-suspend on my machine is
back-ending to s2ram, from the uswsusp package. I haven't tried to dig into
s2ram to establish why it prevents the backlight coming back up, but this
suggests the kernel is fine: echo mem > ... worked fine, and pm-suspend in the
absenceof s2ram works fine.

I'm sorry for wasting your time. I'm a little miffed myself (back-ending to
s2ram by default if present is a debian-specific alteration to the pm-utils
package, so I will have to write a similar apology to the bug there.)

Actually, the problem is not only yours, because many laptops required a
userland workaround quirk before 2.6.26-rc which they don't require any more
and which breaks things now.

That's why the quirk was hardcoded into the s2ram whitelist and is still used
by distributions.

So, as far as the kernel is concerned, this is a "will not fix" thing rather
than "invalid".

BTW, please just add "-f" to the s2ram's command line and things should work

Actually, it's adding "-f" that breaks it. Invoking "s2ram" on 2.6.26 means it
uses it's built-in whitelist and passes the s3 quirks. This still works for me
(although the quirks are superfluous). Invoking "s2ram -f" means it doesn't
check the whitelist at all. pm-utils (as patched by debian) was invoking s2ram
-f, but suffixing explicitly the s3 quirks on the command line for 2.6.25,
which worked, and ommitting them with 2.6.26, which (strangely) doesn't.

[Bug 11016] New: i945: mplayer -vo gl messes up screen

2008-07-01 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11016

Summary: i945: mplayer -vo gl messes up screen
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.26-rc1
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: low
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI)
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Latest working kernel version: v2.6.25
Earliest failing kernel version: v2.6.25-5100-g7b832b5, 2.6.26-rc1
Distribution: Debian
Hardware Environment: HP Compaq nx7300, i945
Software Environment: xorg-video-intel 2.3.1, MPlayer dev-SVN-r27057-4.2.4

Problem Description:
It looks like this: http://tomi.nomi.cz/tmp/broken_mplayer_gl_2.6.26.mov
You can see the screen gets corrupted at the top around the mplayer window,
but it's the same rectange that gets corrupted in which the video works and
outside doesn't.

I had intel driver 2.1.1 a few weeks ago and it looked a bit different there --
didn't corrupt the top of the screen but was corrupted in the whole mplayer
window.

I bisected it to 7b832b56bd971348329c3f4c753ca0abfdf3a3d1. i945 seems not to
support these tiled XY blits, or at least not this way. Reverting this at HEAD
serves as a workaround.

A post-2.6.25 regression.

The simplest fix would be to revert Keith's change. But the changelog
for that patch has insufficient information to permit to know what the
effect of that revert would be. Did the patch fix a bug? If so, what
was it?

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11016

--- Comment #4 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-07-01 12:17 ---
Looks like the 945 doesn't need these register settings -- it uses the fence
registers for detiling instead of explicit configuration. Jbarnes has a patch,
and liskni_s is testing it now.

Hi folks- back again :) Sorry about this. When I was performing my tests
before, I was not doing them from a clean boot on each occasion. That means the
values in /proc/sys/kernel/acpi_video_flags had been set by one method and not
reset prior to trying another.

I have just performed, using 2.6.26-rc8, clean boots into single user mode, no
X, the echo mem > /sys/power/state test. The backlight did not come on after
resume :( I have repeated this three times.

/proc/sys/kernel/acpi_video_flags was set to 0 before and after resuming.

I shall attach the diff of the output of intel_reg_dumper before and after
suspend. It appears to be larger than last time.

Note that I had a VGA monitor plugged into the machine for the duration of all

didn't start X and I don't appear to have the BIOS configured to echo to it).

The backlight still doesn't come on. The intel regs are slightly different,
because X has enabled my external display. I'm going to attach the output of
the reg dumper before and after (files also include contents of
acpi_video_flags and uname -a output)

Where abouts are the hw quirks in the code? I've skimmed over most of the i915*
files in drivers/char/drm but nothing is jumping out of me. I doubt I'd spot a
bug (nor be able to provide a fix) but I am curious :)

Noting, pm-suspend could do something more and echo mem >/sys/power/state, (has
far I know).
If you say that "echo mem > /sys/power/state" works, where is the bug ?
and if you say that pm-suspend fail in something, so it is a pm-utils bug.
isn't it ?
IMHO

I am trying marking this bug related or depend on bug 6001 and bug 9642.
Report please consider this patch
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=14745

It is a very close problem, backlight problem with i915 drm .

So in my H opinion I'd not consider one regression.

I realised by comment #10 that my tests had been flawed and in fact echo mem >
/sys/power/state does not work.

I've just tried that patch and I'm afraid my backlight still did not come on.

I'd agree with Adrian in #3 that it is not a regression since this doesn't work
for 2.6.25 or earlier either.

That patch adds a printk to acpi_video_device_query which does not appear in my
dmesg so acpi_video_device_query is not called as part of my suspend sequence.
I do not know if acpi_video_bus_start_devices is called or not (I shall try
adding a printk to that, too).

Should I be looking at drivers/acpi/video too, then?

Restore LVDS state before PLL state

Can you give something like this a try (it may not apply directly depending on
what version you use, but it should be easy to fix). LVDS state is supposed to
be restored before the PLLs are enabled or the panel might not come up. I hope
that's the problem here... Please let me know if this works for you.

Hi - I just tried that against 2.6.26 (hunks applied against i915_drv.c).
Unfortunately it didn't fix the problem. I'll attach the intel_reg_dumper
output before/after as usual. This is the script I use to test:

#!/bin/sh
set -u
set -e

modprobe i915

/root/intel_reg_dumper > /root/x_regs_before.txt
uname -a > /root/BEFORE
echo acpi_video_flags: >> /root/BEFORE
cat /proc/sys/kernel/acpi_video_flags >> /root/BEFORE

echo mem > /sys/power/state

/root/intel_reg_dumper > /root/x_regs_after.txt
uname -a > /root/AFTER
echo acpi_video_flags: >> /root/AFTER
cat /proc/sys/kernel/acpi_video_flags >> /root/AFTER
dmesg >> /root/AFTER

sync

Jon, can you try the drm tree? It's working well on my 855 test machine and is
easier for me to test/generate diffs against.

$ git clone git://git.freedesktop.org/git/mesa/drm
$ cd linux-core
$ make DRM_MODULES=i915
$ rmmod i915; rmmod drm; insmod ./drm.ko; insmod i915.ko
# suspend/resume

That should work as long as your kernel development headers are installed...

Thanks,
Jesse

I tried the git tree today on my ThinkPad R61, but the backlight did not come
on. However I also noticed that the suspend LED (the crescent moon) was still
lit as well, so I'm not sure if the system is waking up or not.

Sure. Actually this is easier for me too. I've tried that tree (HEAD
7cfdba2b30), the backlight does not come on. Would the register dumps be
useful?

disable panel & restore all panel state first

this one tries to disable the panel first thing, since that should unlock some
of the regs that we may be failing to restore.

Yeah it would be good to get some confirmation, but istr seeing another,
similar report for another thinkpad but I don't remember the details. I wonder
if there's some ACPI call we're missing here? The PP_STATUS regs definitely
change in your config, but they're also undocumented in my 855 manual, so I
wonder if there are some other bits we don't know about on this machine that
are required to bring the panel back up...

Jesse,

I am sorry, I cannot reproduce it. I tried with x11, xv, gl, gl2 and all worked
ok. I do not know what can have happened, but I am sure that it happened three
times in a row yesterday, with the same kernel.

You can mark the bug as invalid if you like, if I can trigger it again I will
re-open it.

[Bug 6626] Infrequent system freezes when using OpenGL on ATI radeon driver r100

2008-10-17 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6626

--- Comment #21 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-10-17 02:37 ---
Just to let you know. I am now on 2.6.27-rc6, xserver-core 1.4.2, xorg 7.3, and
the problem is still there.

I needed to install some openGL apps (I did not use any before because of the
crashes), and it took three days until I got my freeze :-( Again, nothing in
the syslog or anywhere else.

Being more than two years old now, I guess this bug will never be found. Only
solution seems to upgrade to another hardware or just not to use any opengl
apps. Unfortunately, I am still very happy with my Thinkpad X31, otherwise. So
I guess I will go without opengl for another two to three years, until there is
a stronger reason to upgrade the hardware. Pity, I like compiz...

Thanks anyway and kind regards

Michael

Michael, did you ever try turning off AGP? Wrong AGPMode setting, or AGP at
all, is known to cause system freezes. Add this to your Device section:
 Option "BusType" "PCI"
If that works out well, you can remove that line and instead try
 Option "AGPMode" "2"
or try 4 instead of 2.

Tormod, well, I am pretty sure that I have tried many xorg options when I first
reported the bug (two years ago) including different AGPmodes, but I will try
BusType PCI again.

Due to the infrequent nature of these freezes it may, however, take days or
weeks until I can give feedback.

Thanks for your help,

Michael

Hmm, one question: Is AGP only used in opengl apps? I guess not. It rather
seems to be the basic hardware communication protocol, isn't it?

Because, without opengl I don't have any freezes of the machine, whatsoever.
Only with opengl apps (e.g. compiz, googleearth) I occasionally experience
these crashes. Wouldn't this rule out an effect of the option "BusType" "PCI"?
