You can use the free Archive or Book Packager script to do this. It
moves all graphics to a single directory. You can find it here:
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/07/create-a-book-packager-using-ext

Be sure to get v2, at the script attached link. The original script
can be found here link, as I recall, linked to a version that had a bug
in it.

This could be a combination of two issues:

1. I seem to remember FrameMaker sometimes has trouble creating a PDF when a
book contains a mix of landscape and portrait pages. The resulting PDF will
contain only one page orientation, the landscape pages will be rotated. The
solution was to create a .ps file, then drop this on Distiller.

2. After you import master pages into a book, you have to apply them.
If you have set up a Master Page Mapping Table, you can do this automatically.

Mysterious Color9 being added to FrameMaker files

2013-06-10 Thread Fei Min Lorente
There's a FrameMaker user here (FrameMaker 10, Windows XP) who is getting a
color definition called Color9 added to some of his files, and he's not going
into the color menu and defining it. He notices the problems when he updates
the book and it says the color definition is inconsistent. We've been fixing it
by just deleting that color definition, but we're kind of curious about why it
keeps popping up.

We're using structured FrameMaker, and we do import XML files sometimes, but
these aren't one of them. However, he does sometimes copy bits from Outlook,
other FrameMaker files, or the PDF review copy which has reviewer's markups on
it. Would any of these be a possible source of the mysterious Color9?

Haven't tested this myself, but I think you could define a new colour,
selecting Print As 'Don't Print', and then specify that colour in a character

Hmmm. I get the same result.

Well, you could move the special colour from Normal to Invisible, either
in the default Color View or in one of the other Views, then switch as
necessary before printing/editing.

Another FrameMaker 11 Bug

2013-06-10 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello Framers,

This one may seem obscure, but I found another FrameMaker 11 bug is causing
a major problem with one of my plugins. You can see it by following these
steps:

1) Create a new, double-sided document.
2) Go to the two master pages and add Current Page # variables so you can
keep track of the body pages.
3) Add some dummy content so the document has at least 3 pages.
4) Go to page 2 and add a small text frame in the top margin of the page.
Tag the flow with a name that is not A and turn on the Autoconnect
property.
5) Click in the new text frame and press Return until a new page is created.

OK, where is the new page with the new, small text frame? In FrameMaker 11,
will be on page 4. in FrameMaker 10 (and lower), the new page will be 3, and
the original page 3 becomes page 4.

Why has this changed in 11? Is it a bug or a feature?

Neither behavior sounds much like a feature to me. If I'm understanding
correctly, each subsequent page in the document will contain either the main
text frame (Flow A) or the small one you added (Flow B), but not both. And
which page contains which depends on which flow you add text to next.

Preferable behavior, IMHO, would be if step 5 caused a new, small text frame
for Flow B to appear at the top of the existing page 3, along with the existing
main text frame (Flow A).

But I can't really think of a use case for either the old behavior, the new
behavior, or the behavior I'm suggesting. I've only used multiple text flows
for documents like newsletters, where I wanted a text flow to continue in a
specific place of my choosing, and thus placed the text frame there and
connected it to the previous frame in that flow.

2013-06-10 Thread Mike Wickham
I was stymied by that same problem once and someone explained to me, if
I'm remembering correctly, that the Don't Print setting only applies to
color separations. To make it not appear in a normal, composite
printout, you have to use View Color Views and move your non-printing
color into the Invisible column.

It is rather non-intuitive.

Possibly from Outlook - 'Color9' sounds like the usual useful Microsoft style
of nomenclature - definitely from other FrameMaker files, unlikely from PDF.

I find SiliconPrairie's Color Tools plugin to be indispensable in these sorts
of cases, and especially so when you get 'color explosions' for no apparent
reasons, or when an author sends a FrameMaker book that contains hundreds of
unused color definitions (yes, this happened, and 'hundreds' isn't an
exaggeration).

>From their website:

'Color Tools provides additional capabilities for working with color
definitions in FrameMaker documents. As a documentation set ages, it tends to
get polluted with color definitions that are not used. This was especially true
with earlier versions of FrameMaker that defined colors for 8-bit PNG (Portable
Network Graphic) files. Color Tools can help. Its capabilities include listing
colors defined and removing non-list colors from Frame documents. It also
contains a routine that generates a report listing the colors defined in a
document.'

That location only works automatically for DLLs.

What you are missing is the instruction to use File >Script > Run to execute
the downloaded script the first time. That initial execution creates the new

Haven't tested this myself, but I think you could define a new colour,
selecting Print As 'Don't Print', and then specify that colour in a
character tag for your meta-data.

Modifying FM's default R/L master pages

2013-06-10 Thread Christenson, Pat
Hi Stuart -

I just tried this (it sounded PERFFECT) but the info still prints. I wonder if
this is a bug.

I'm using FM10 (with all patches and updates) on Windows 7.

Hmmm. I get the same result.

Well, you could move the special colour from Normal to Invisible, either
in the default Color View or in one of the other Views, then switch as
necessary before printing/editing.

Color setting Don't Print doesn't work (WAS: Modifying FM's default R/L master pages)

2013-06-10 Thread Christenson, Pat
I've just verified that this is true in both FrameMaker 10 and 11.

RECAP: Create a new color and choose Don't Print as its Print As setting. Apply
the color to text and print the page. The text using the Don't Print color
shouldn't appear in the printout but it does.

I've just created a bug report on the Adobe website but thought I'd post this
here as well, in case any Adobe folk are following the thread.

Tag the flow with a name that is not "A" and turn on the Autoconnect

Color setting Don't Print doesn't work (WAS: Modifying FM's default R/L master pages)

2013-06-10 Thread Mike Wickham
I was stymied by that same problem once and someone explained to me, if
I'm remembering correctly, that the Don't Print setting only applies to
color separations. To make it not appear in a normal, composite
printout, you have to use View> Color> Views and move your non-printing
color into the Invisible column.

It is rather non-intuitive.

Mysterious Color9 being added to FrameMaker files

2013-06-10 Thread Robert Lauriston
I encountered something like that a few years ago, if I remember right
it turned out to be coming from an Illustrator graphic.

Converting Older Frame Files to Frame 10: Cannot Lock File Error Message

2013-06-10 Thread todd.bers...@teradyne.com

Hello Framers,

I just received a batch of 200+ FrameMaker 4, 5.5, and 6 files that I need
to get into Frame 10 and then convert into Word and PDF. However, when I
try to open them in either Frame 7 or Frame 10, I get the following error
message: "Cannot lock this file for your use. Your changes to it may
conflict with the work of other users. File ".

When I click Continue the file opens, but I cannot edit it or use the Save
As button, since it is not available.

I tried changing permissions on all the files, which appeared to be
successful since they no longer indicate that they are read-only and the
security settings have grey checkmarks indicating I have write permissions.
After changing permissions, the error message no longer comes up, but I
still can't edit the files and do not have access to the Save As command.
But clearly, some setting in the old Frame file is prohibiting me from
editing the file. I can print a PDF file, and then use Acrobat to save it
into a Word file, but this is a very roundabout way to get these files into
Frame 10.

The Adobe forum had an entry on this issue, but the only response didn't
help much: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4298416.

Any suggestions on how to unlock them so I can use them in Frame 10?

BTW, is there a search function on the framers list to seek out topic
discussions that might be relevant? I only see the archive, which lists
items in chronological order.

Thanks for your help.

Color setting Don't Print doesn't work (WAS: Modifying FM's default R/L master pages)

I seem to vaguely remember that this setting is only valid for CMYK documents.
I could be wrong though. Check that out.
