You shouldn't experiment with the so called Technology Release 5.0 then, but upgrade to 4.7 . The simpliest way to do this, is to download the iso-image, boot it and follow the upgrade instructions in the menu. Regards, Uli. > > We have two FreeBSD 4.5 boxes. Re: Good way of upgrading from FreeBSD 4.5?
I swear I remember reading something on the FreeBSD site saying that you shouldn't just upgrade from 4.x to 5.0, because it's still kind of in the beta stage and some apps might not work properly. Especially on a production server. The suggested way to upgrade to 5.0, was to backup everything on the current machine and install 5.0 from scatch then load from backups. I could be wrong, so find out for sure or just try it, but make sure you backup. - Original Message - From: "Asenchi" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Johannes Angeldorff" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, February 05, 2003 11:23 PM Subject: RE: Good way of upgrading from FreeBSD 4.5? > Johannes, > > My interpretation of your email is that you need to look into CVSup. You can upgrade them, but it won't be safe. 5.0 is described on www.freebsd.org as being a "New Technology" release - in other words, not ready for the kind of production use you want to put it to. I myself use 4.5 for my two most important machines. But what they have on them now is 4.5-RELEASE-p24, because I've updated them using cvsup, and I specified RELENG_4_5 as the CVS branch to use. This means there are only minimal configuration changes to be applied with mergemaster after updating, and the OS basically stays where it is, while still getting all the right security updates for the base system. > If we download FreeBSD 5.0 and install it on our FreeBSD 4.5 boxes, > what will we have to do? Is there risk that all settings, contents > and installed applications will be erased? Read the handbook (www.freebsd.org/handbook/) very carefully in the areas of "The Cutting Edge". Remember that 5.0 is branched from - -CURRENT, not -STABLE. Then decide to cvsup to RELENG_4_5 unless there is an important feature you really need in later 4.x releases. Make sure you practise any updates first on a sacrificial box first too. I'm reckoning on carrying on with 4.x releases for at least another year, maybe 18 months for ultra-production stuff. We'll see. My experience of the switch in Linux land between their 2.2 and 2.4 kernels, (my original reason for switching to FreeBSD, BTW) makes me very cautious of these kind of major changes. - -- W. Do I understand from your mail that you use the machines for business purposes? If so, I would really think twice before upgrading to 5.0. It is good, but not yet as stable as the more mature 4.x branch. If you want to upgrade, then go as far as 4.7, and no further yet. You will find good instructions on how to do this at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html Following these instructions will ensure you have few problems, and all your app configs will be safe. But still, take a backup. To upgrade to 4.7-STABLE, use the CVS tag RELENG_4. To follow the 4.7 security branch, use the tag RELENG_4_7. If, however, your machines are not critical, then by all means try 5.0, but be prepared for teething troubles. See the Early Adopter's Guide at http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.0R/early-adopter.html for more details of what to look out for. I have never tried an upgrade from 4.x to 5, so can't comment on how easy it is (I would think, though, it would be fairly straightforward). Your application configs _should_ be safe, but take a backup. Take a backup, sing it with me, take a backup! I would probably go for a comletely fresh install, though, as there are some fairly fundamental architectural changes between 4.x and 5.0. A new install (i.e. reworking your partition scheme, doing newfs, etc) will ensure there is no "old" stuff lying around to get in the way and confuse things. Is there risk that all settings, contents > and installed applications will be erased? First of all, FreeBSD-5.0 isn't ready to be used on production systems yet. It won't be ready for that until the RELENG_5 tags are laid down and 5-STABLE is created, and that won't happen for some months yet. If these boxes are generating income for you, or if any of their users are relying on them to provide vital services, then you should stop and think really carefully before you go ahead with upgrading to 5.0. This page: http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.0R/early-adopter.html has a good discussion of the pros and cons. You may well be better served by upgrading to the latest 4-STABLE or 4.7-RELEASE-pN version. You might even consider 4.5-RELEASE-pN if you'ld prefer minimal changes. However, there have been some nasty security bugs present in 4.5-RELEASE that have been fixed in RELENG_4 and also RELENG_4_6 and RELENG_4_7, which are the supported release branches, but those fixes may not have been back-ported to RELENG_4_5 or earlier. If all this RELENG_x_y stuff seems like gibberish to you, read appendix A6 of the handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvs-tags.html If you haven't ever updated a FreeBSD system before, upgrading to one of those versions will provide you with useful experience when it comes to doing the rather harder 4.x to 5.0 jump. General instructions for performing the update may be found in /usr/src/UPDATING, but that pre-supposes you've managed to download the appropriate versions of the sources. The most popular method for getting hold of the up-to-date sources is discussed in appendix A5 of the handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html On the other hand, take a look at the 'To upgrade from 4.x-stable to current' section near the end of: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/UPDATING?rev=1.239&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup It's certainly possible to do what you ask without having to blow away all of your existing configuration, given certain caveats. If you're sure that's what you want to do, then get yourself some good backups and go for it. Good luck.
