This not really the place to report this, you should use bugzilla and
file a bug on the gtkhtml component.

Now, if you ask me, I wouldn't be that sure that it's a bug, they could
actually be referring to an emoticon (:-), :-(, :-D, etc).

String change in Nautilus

2008-08-28 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi,

I committed a patch in Nautilus for bug 549662 [1], which fixes the
plural form of a string.

Hi Sweta,

Looking at the po file, the reference is the following:

#: ../components/editor/gtkhtml-editor-actions.c:1579
msgid _Emoticon
msgstr _Frimousse

In the code, it represents a menu to insert a smiley :

{ insert-face-menu,
  NULL,
  N_(_Emoticon),
  NULL,
  NULL,
  NULL },

So I don't think there is an error in this string. Could you please
explain why you think there is a problem with this string ?

Thanks,

Bob.

Re: Translation in gnome-power-manager

2008-08-28 Thread Vincent Untz
Le mercredi 27 août 2008, à 23:08 +0200, Claude Paroz a écrit :
 Hi all,

 Before entering a bug in gnome-power-manager, I'd just like to know the
 correct way to translate this (from gpm-cell.c):

   if (unit-is_present == FALSE) {
   g_string_append_printf (details, b%s:/b %s\n, _(Status),
 _(Missing));
   } else if (gpm_cell_unit_is_charged (unit)) {
   g_string_append_printf (details, b%s:/b %s\n, _(Status),
 _(Charged));
   } else if (unit-is_charging) {
   g_string_append_printf (details, b%s:/b %s\n, _(Status),
 _(Charging));
   } else if (unit-is_discharging) {
   g_string_append_printf (details, b%s:/b %s\n, _(Status),
 _(Discharging));

 I think the idea was to remove markup for translators, which is a good
 thing per se, but in this case, I'm afraid it's unavoidable to include
 the markup inside the strings, to give something like :

   g_string_append (details, _(bStatus:/b Missing\n));

 In French, it would be translatable if the : were in the translated
 strings:

   g_string_append_printf (details, b%s/b %s\n, _(Status:),
 _(Missing));

 But I think this is not acceptable for LTR languages, right ?

Looks wrong to me, indeed.

Vincent

Hola Daniel,

  Hombre, si no te molesta hacerlo, adelante.

 Pango keeps a single string (sentence) per language that it uses internally
 and also exposes for other applications to use (in a font dialog for

  Previously the sample text were quite limited (about 20 language supported),
 and bogus. I have not extended the list to about a hundred tables. I used
 various sample-string, pangram, and other resources freely available. These
 can be found here:

 http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/pango/trunk/pango/pango-language-sample-table.h?view=markup

 I'm now asking translation teams to review the sentence for their language
 now. Please file a bug against pango at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ if you
 think a sample string needs to be changed. A good sample string would be:

   - Politically correct

   - Representative of normal text in the language (so, no alphabetical lists)

   - Exposes features unique to the language (European sample strings would
 use
 diacritics used in the target language for example)

   - Not too short, not too long

   - Not copied from what Windows uses (unless it's a very widespread thing
 like The quick brown fox...

 That's it.  Thanks in advance,

UI/Feature freeze break request for gnome-utils/gnome-screenshot

hi everyone;

due to lack of time on my side I let slip the patch attached to bug
99897:

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99897

which adds a 'Copy to clipboard' button to the save dialog of
gnome-screenshot. the patch is trivial in logic and since we are kind of
closing old bugs (like 56070) in this GNOME release, I'd like to get
this 10 bug closed as well. :-)

ciao,

gnome-control-center string changes

Hi,

I just contributed a patch in gnome-control-center to use context for
event sound names.

I even dare to propose the new NC_ macro that will add some more msgctxt
in the pot file. For those using poedit, double-check your po file with
a text editor if you really want to distinguish the two Logout and
Desktop strings.

I have a dream that one day this group will follow through the important
discussions with adopting a proposed compromise at the end instead of
silence and disregard for effort concerning reaching a real and viable
consensus. - You say I'm pretty naive? Yeah, it's like that, anyway...

Sorry, but I really think this should have been discussed before
introducing msgctxt into yet another module (that is evolution, GIMP, and
counting...). I wonder whether the ordinary translation (developer) comment
would had been possible to implement instead of msgctxt (at least for the
time being). For now, I think so. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

 For those using poedit, double-check your po file with
 a text editor if you really want to distinguish the two Logout and
 Desktop strings.

Thanks for caring, but note that the vast majority of translators most
likely don't follow this discussion or don't subscribe to gnome-i18n. So
they're turned adrift, so to speak. Moreover, it's pretty sad.
