Bless Anthony. Reading him is like stepping into into the Tardus and
whipping off to a vanished era. We are always trembling on the brink of a
revolutionary break through.

If only.

Still who knows. I have noticed that I am slowly transferring my hopes to
Sanders in the USA. I can see the frown on Comrade Proyect's face.

I honestly have no illusions in Sanders or any Democrat. Honestly none. But
the very thought of Trump makes me sick. Only a tad sicker than the thought
of President Biden I hasten to add.

But I am desperate for some hope - any hope.

Happy new year to all comrades on the list.

NY Times, Dec. 30, 2019
May Stevens, Who Turned Activism Into Art, Is Dead at 95
By Holland Cotter

May Stevens, a painter who for more than 60 years devoted her art to
political causes like the civil rights, antiwar and feminist movements,
died on Dec. 9 in Santa Fe, N.M. She was 95.

The Ryan Lee gallery, which represented her in New York, said the cause
was Alzheimer’s disease. She died at an assisted-living and memory-loss
facility.

Ms. Stevens was part of a generation of activist artists that also
included her husband, Rudolf Baranik, and their close friends Leon Golub
and Nancy Spero. Through the rise of Minimalism and Conceptualism, these
artists adhered to an older tradition of expressive painting, and to a
belief in the value of art as an instrument of progressive politics and
personal liberation.

“The reason I’m an artist,” she said in an interview with the art
historian Patricia Hills for the 2005 book “May Stevens,” “is because
it’s a place where you can be totally free. No one is going to prevent
me from doing political work when I want to, and no one is going to make
me do it if I don’t want to.”

Ms. Stevens came from a working-class family, and she understood early
that class as a shaping force often went unspoken of both in art history
and in the liberation movements in which she would be immersed.

“When we think back to the past and our ancestry — historically where
people have come from — we always think of the knights and ladies, and
not necessarily those who tilled the soil and turned the earth, which is
where most of us come from,” she told Ms. Hills.

May Stevens was born in Dorchester, Mass., on June 9, 1924, and grew up
in nearby Quincy, south of Boston. Her father, Ralph, worked as a pipe
fitter in the Bethlehem Steel shipyards in Quincy. Her mother, Alice
Dick Stevens, was a homemaker. Her younger brother, Stacey, died of
pneumonia when Ms. Stevens was 17.

After graduating from the Massachusetts School of Art (now the
Massachusetts College of Art and Design) in 1946, Ms. Stevens moved to
New York City to study at the Art Students League. There she met Mr.
Baranik, a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania; they married in 1948. The
couple had one child, a son, Steven, also an artist, who died at 32 in
1981, a suicide.

Ms. Stevens’s lifelong pattern of producing work in thematic series
began in 1963 with a solo exhibition, at the Roko Gallery in Manhattan,
of paintings and prints titled “Freedom Riders,” inspired by the civil
rights activists who traveled the segregated South registering black
voters. Much of that work was based on images lifted from newspapers and
television.

Her opposition to the war in Vietnam inspired her best-known body of
paintings, the “Big Daddy” series. Its central image, of a grim,
phallic-headed, white-skinned man, was based on an early portrait she
had made of her politically conservative father, whom she described as
pro-war, racist and misogynistic. Done in a crisp Pop style, his figure
represents an attitude of hostility toward difference that she saw as
embedded in patriarchal American culture.

Ms. Stevens became increasingly involved in the feminist movement in the
1970s. Along with several artists and writers — including Mary Beth
Edelson, Harmony Hammond, Joyce Kozloff, Lucy Lippard, Mary Miss and
Miriam Schapiro — she was a founder of the Heresies Collective, which
published the influential journal Heresies: A Feminist Publication on
Art and Politics, to which she contributed essays.

From 1976 to 1978 she produced a painting series titled
“Ordinary/Extraordinary,” which paired portraits of her Irish-American
mother, whose spirit she felt had been crushed by marriage, with images
of the Polish-German Marxist revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg, who was
killed for her social beliefs and whom Ms. Stevens referred to as her
“spiritual mother.”

Ms. Stevens said that her aim in this series was to erase the idea that
one woman’s public struggles were of greater value than another’s
private ones.

In her interview with Ms. Hills, she said of her depictions of her
mother: “For me, she’s not just a single person, because we all know
this person. We all know her, and we may become her, as aging is a
problem, as illness is a problem, as being a woman who does not fulfill
herself is a problem.”

In “Alice in the Garden,” a later five-panel painting that suggests a
secular altarpiece, she depicted her elderly mother alone, afflicted
with dementia and confined to a nursing home — as Ms. Stevens herself
would eventually be.

Her late works, from the 1990s and early 2000s, were do

NY Times, Op-Ed, Dec. 30, 2019
Our Cherished Rivers Are Under Threat
Permanent protections for free-flowing rivers need to be a centerpiece
of every country’s national climate action plan. Chile can lead the way.

By Macarena Soler, Monti Aguirre and Juan Pablo Orrego

(Ms. Soler is the founder of Geute Conservación Sur, Ms. Aguirre is the
Latin America program coordinator of International Rivers and Mr. Orrego
is the president of Ecosistemas.)

The rivers of Chilean Patagonia cascade from snow-capped mountains
through sheer rock facades and rolling hills, radiating bright
turquoise, deep blues and vivid greens. The Puelo. The Pascua. The
Futaleufú. Each is as breathtaking and unique as the landscape it quenches.

But these rivers, like many worldwide, have been threatened by dam
projects that aim to provide power for distant cities and mining
operations. Only one-third of the world’s 177 longest rivers remain free
flowing, and just 21 rivers longer than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles)
retain a direct connection to the sea.

If we are to arrest global climate change, prevent the toxifying of
freshwater sources and do right by all those who depend on rivers for
survival, we must return more rivers to their natural state.

For decades, rivers have been an afterthought in global climate talks,
like the ones that concluded in Madrid this month. New streams of
climate finance, like the Climate Bonds Initiative, may soon be
available to large-scale hydropower projects. While renewable energy and
its financing are an important part of climate solutions, hydropower
dams are not the answer.

Hydropower is not a clean, green technology. Rivers help regulate an
increasingly volatile global carbon cycle by transporting decaying
organic material from land to sea, where it settles on the ocean floor.
This draws an estimated 200 million tons of carbon out of the air each year.

As an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scientist, Philip
Fearnside, has documented, large dams, especially on tropical rivers
like the Amazon, are “methane factories,” emitting in some cases more
greenhouse gases than coal-fired power plants. This month in Madrid, 276
civil society groups attending the United Nations climate talks called
on the Climate Bonds Initiative to exclude hydropower from climate
financing.

Hydroelectric dams, when they are built, flood large areas of
vegetation. This fuels decomposition and releases carbon dioxide,
methane and nitrous oxide. Considered as a whole, hydroelectric dams
emit a billion tons of greenhouse gases per year. This is comparable to
the aviation industry, which emitted over 900 million tons of greenhouse
gases in 2018.

Damming rivers affects both people and ecosystems. More than 60 million
people in developing countries depend on lakes and rivers for their
livelihoods. An estimated 80 million people have already been displaced
by dam projects worldwide. The United Nations estimates that around one
million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction, at
least in part because of damming, river pollution, diversion for
industrial agriculture and overfishing.

For more than a decade, Chilean environmentalists have been fighting dam
projects. In 2006, the Chilean energy corporation Endesa proposed to
build five major dams in the Aysén region, a sparsely populated area in
the south of Chile that is home to one of the world’s largest ice fields
outside of Antarctica and Greenland.

This dam project, called HidroAysén, would have flooded nearly 15,000
acres of forests to transmit power to distant cities and to fuel the
country’s copper industry, which accounts for as much as 10 percent of
Chile’s G.D.P. But at what cost?

A 2009 study by the University of Chile found large dam projects
unnecessary to meeting the country’s future and growing energy needs.
Communities threatened by HidroAysén organized. Across Chile, thousands
of people took to the streets in more than a dozen cities.
Environmentalists challenged the proposed dams in courts.

In spite of the government’s initial eagerness to greenlight HidroAysén,
the Committee of Ministers scuttled the project in 2014, in recognition
of the significant impacts the project would have had on one of Chile’s
most iconic regions.

The current movement to protect Patagonia’s free-flowing rivers stands
on the shoulders of the United States Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, passed
in 1968, which protects 13,413 free-flowing miles of 226 rivers in 41
states and Puerto Rico.

Several Chilean organizations are working on Ley Ríos Salvajes, a
campaign to create a wild rivers

Climate Change and Political Chaos: A Deadly Mix in Honduras Dengue Epidemic
By Kirk Semple

CHOLOMA, Honduras — More than 400 people died this year as one of the
worst dengue epidemics on record swept through Central America — a type
of outbreak that some scientists and public health officials are warning
is likely to become more frequent and more widespread because of climate
change.

But while climate change is threatening to increase the spread of dengue
worldwide by expanding the range of the mosquitoes that carry the virus,
the disease has already found an especially fertile breeding ground in
Honduras, for reasons that go beyond the environment.

In Honduras, which accounted for more than 40 percent of the dengue
deaths in Central America this year, according to the Pan American
Health Organization, the effects of climate change have been compounded
by government dysfunction, political tumult and public apathy.

Dengue has hit the country hard. This year, it had more than 107,000
cases of the viral disease — more than 13 times the number recorded last
year — and at least 175 deaths. In 2018, only three people in Honduras
died from the disease, according to the Pan American Health Organization.

Honduras’s notorious criminality has worsened matters, too, as public
health teams, already stretched thin by budget cuts and a lack of
trained personnel, have been blocked by gangs from entering some of the
most severely afflicted neighborhoods to educate residents and fumigate
against mosquito infestations.

Dengue is transmitted to humans by a type of mosquito called Aedes,
which thrives in urban areas of the world’s tropical and subtropical
regions. Tens of millions of cases occur each year in more than 100
countries, and symptoms may include fever, internal bleeding and shock.
Inadequately treated, the illness can quickly kill.

In Honduras, health officials trace the start of the current epidemic to
the fall of 2018. The number of incidents then rose sharply during the
first half of 2019, hitting a peak this summer before falling off as the
year ended. A nationwide health emergency declared in July by the
administration of President Juan Orlando Hernández remains in effect.

The outbreak struck during a time of political turbulence in Honduras,
with violent street protests against Mr. Hernández and calls for his
ouster. Some of the protests have been driven by fears the government
planned to privatize the health and education sectors.

The nation also suffers from high murder rates and widespread poverty,
which have combined to drive tens of thousands of Hondurans in recent
years to emigrate, with many trying to make it to the United States.

The dengue outbreak has met little resistance from a public health
system gutted by budget cuts and pervasive corruption, analysts and
officials said.

“It’s a collapsed system, an inefficient system,” said Ismael Zepeda, an
economist with Fosdeh, a research group in Tegucigalpa, the capital.

Surveillance programs intended to detect outbreaks of mosquito-borne
diseases were feeble. The nation’s poorly supplied and understaffed
medical facilities lacked the capacity to adequately handle even the
nation’s normal demands, much less an epidemic of historic proportions
requiring a fast, highly organized response.

“In another country there would be many sick but not as many deaths,”
said Eduardo Ortíz, an adviser on sustainable development and
environmental health for the Pan American Health Organization in
Honduras. “The cure for dengue is political.”

The epidemic in Honduras has been particularly brutal in the northern
department, or province, of Cortés, the industrial heartland of
Honduras. It got started early in this region and spread quickly through
its main cities, San Pedro Sula and Choloma.

Cortés then became a kind of engine for the national crisis, officials
said, as its large migratory population of factory workers helped spread
the disease to other regions on visits home, officials said.

The epidemic has had a particularly devastating impact on Cortés’s
low-income neighborhoods, which suffer from overburdened and
ill-equipped public services and poor health care resources.

The epidemic caught Wendy Carcamo and her family unaware early this year.

Though the outbreak had already begun to bedevil Honduras, Ms. Carcamo
said she knew little about it. Then one day in February, her son, Jostin
Pineda, 7, suddenly fell ill.

“All day he was happy,” Ms. Carcamo recalled of her son. But by
nightfall he was suffering a brutal headache and a high fever.

Thank you Phil! Several times I have seen your good communist stance and
gender etc on the list. I am disgusted at the misogyny there and with
most of the sex work is work and the trans bs  itself all over the

Institutional capture.  I cannot even bring myself to comment about it
online because it just triggers my ptsd caused from years of exposure to
and exploitation from predatory males. I just cannot. I know many other
women will not say anything either. But I really feel that there is so
much at stake for women. I work in other ways. But we rely on men like
you to keep these misogynistic arseholes educated. If not for the
arseholes, who are likely lost causes themselves, but for those watching
on.
Just wanted to say thanks. What you are saying matters.

After a public uproar, The New York Times has revised a column by Bret
Stephens that cited an academic paper co-authored by an anthropologist
who has been branded a white nationalist.

An editor’s note, appended to the column headlined “The Secrets of
Jewish Genius,” says a reference to the 2005 study was removed and that
Stephens did not know the author “promoted racist views.”
