Re: [MBZ] W108 heater fan - replacing
An old sparkplug makes a great puller for the heater valve cores. One that has the nut on the terminal end. Unscrew it and use the threaded stud of the spark plug to thread into the holes in the heater valve cores after you’ve taken the screws out and removed (and marked) the levers. Re: [MBZ] 1990 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Diesel - $35,000
The "Charge air cooler" also known as the "intercooler" is a very big deal with a Diesel engine... Power produced with each power stroke of the engine is the direct result of how dense the intake air is... cooler air is more dense, thus produces greater expansion upon fuel detonation, which directly results in greater fuel economy, more end result power, and cooler cylinder temperatures instead of "melt your pistons under load temps". The K "Cone of death" defeats entry of cool external air, [IMHO] bringing no good effect, since it sucks engine compartment heated air. Re: [MBZ] Leather replacement seat covers
With a cost of $174.50 per seat, I would be very hard pressed to buy color matched full skins, deliver them to a better than decent upholstery shop, have them make a set of patterns, then make and install seat covers.. I would call this a fair deal. Also, noted. They state they can make and supply other model Mercedes cover sets.. worth adding to my bucket list, I think.. [MBZ] winter
You folks in warmer climates are fortunate. I think my days of driving my old car are done for this year. We have snow now which means they will be salting the intersections so the car will sit in the garage until some time in May when they have cleaned the roads of winter sand, salt etc. It had got to the point where it needed some work in any event. The turn signals were the most recent issue. It also gets dark here early now and I have no dash lights. A good opportunity to fix both of those issues at the same time as I likely need to pull the instrument cluster for both. It was about -10C here in the morning on Saturday. The car was in the garage and started up right off like it was summer. I moved it outside as I was cleaning up the garage and needed the space. It sat outside until about 5 and although the temperature had warmed up some, it was not happy to start. It took 3 attempts and it blew enough smoke on startup to cancel the good intentions of the drivers of several electric vehicles, but it did start and then ran fine. I should probably adjust the valves again. I have only done it once and I recall that someone suggested I should drive it a bit and then adjust again. I never got to that. It wasn't a good highway truck but was nice offroad for a > stock truck. That's why I went for the Mazcedes to replace the annoying Chevy. But, it turns out its turning radius was _larger_ than the full-sized truck it was to putatively replace, and it was so light I was concerned about its ability to haul heavy loads of firewood up and out of the hole. The Chevy had groaned mightily quite a few times the way I was using it. When dad's Ford became available I jumped at the chance to swap it for the Mazcedes. That Ford's original job was hauling a camper around the US, which it did well. (A bit wheezy in the higher elevations, but that's a NA diesel engine for you.) He only replaced it because he'd always wanted a Cummins, and decided that 2004 was the year he'd indulge himself. The '04 Dodge was a much more refined truck than the '90 that he'd been considering the last time. It also was his first-ever slushbox truck, because he said he was old and tired of 'rowing'. He hauled an Airstream back and forth to Arizona with it. He had kept the Ford, and used it (and the Dodge) for miscellaneous farm duties as well. The Ford got the dirtier jobs, as well as the infrequent camper hauling. (When he didn't want to take the Airstream to wherever.) For an intermittent-use woods truck, I think a diesel makes a lot of sense. They sit unattended well. The only downside I see at the moment is that the '74 Chevy's sheet metal was a lot heavier, and harder to damage chucking firewood into it. I also need to get some grippy offroad tires onto the Ford. Cha-ching! Most of the firewood I've gathered lately, though, has been with the Dodge V10, as it's licensed, because I've been collecting it from people who need their trees gone but don't burn wood. My scrap trees are being neglected. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Ford diesel
The only problem with a fullsize as a woods truck is that they're wide. I had a Ranger that was nice as a woods truck because it was narrow enough to sneak into tight places. It wasn't a good highway truck but was nice offroad for a stock truck. -Curt On Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 07:34:23 PM EDT, Jim Cathey wrote: > I would surely love to find one of those in 4wd that isn't rusted out. Re: [MBZ] OT what could go wrong -- 1988 Rolls-Royce silver spur, $24, 000
If only that body could be forgotten! Almost as ugly as the Camargue. What you *want* is a pre-69 Silver Shadow, which of course used Citroën hydropneumatic suspension on all four wheels. Later cars only used it on the rear. D.
