[MBZ] 85 300SD

2008-07-05 Thread David Hemsley

Hi Gang,

Some punk broke the hod star off my car the other week, but this punk did not
even take it - just left it sitting on the hood.

I received a new star on Wednesday. How do I take what remains of the old star
off and how do I put this new star on?

It's hard to explain without showing you but here goes.

The star base is held in by a spring in the base. You compress the two sides
turn the spring until it's retained by the holder then lift out the base.

Install the replacement by dropping the star in place rotating the soring
until the two arms pop out.

You'll need a pair of slip joint pliers.

Thanks,

Hi All,

I have an 85 300SD with approximately 290,00 on the chassis and 50,000 on
the drive train.

Almost at home, this afternoon, after completing a 45 mile each way high way
trip I heard a terrible noise. Sounded as though it was coming from behind
the dash while in the vehicle and resmbled the sound of a broken water
pressure line but more intense. However, with only a minimal loss of power,
at first, the a return to normal power all gauges showed good. no change in
water temp., oil prressure cruise or climate control activity.

Pulling in my dirveway, maybe 1 or 1 and 1/2 miles since the onset, I
immediately shu the vehicle down. The engine stopped but the noise did not!
Upon leaving the vehicle I could really hear the noise and it was extermely
LOUD. I opened the hood and decided the noise was comig from the area of
the air filter/turbo area. Both were shaking and I could feel a slight
vibration.

Occassionally a whif of smoke would come from the area near the transmission
dip stick and I would see aspark from the area where the transmission and
the engine unite.

I panicked and began pulling any relay and fuse I could lay my hands on, in
the area near the brake reservoir. Still the noise, shaking and smoke
continued. Finally on the passenger side/front of the engine compartment -
mounted on the wheel well - I pulled a small four connector relay apart form
the wiring and the noise, vibration, smoking and sparking stopped.

When the relay was re-connected none of the symptoms were again seen.

When trying to start the vehicle in any gear except park or neutral no
atempt to start the egine is witnessed, just as it should be. However,
when in either park or neutral I hear the familiar tonation of a burned out
starter turning while no attempt to star the engine is found.

Other than a dead battery, after sitting for several months, about two
months ago this vehcile has never given me any challenges starting/shutting
down.

Any clues folks and how could I test to see if any or your theories are
correct?

Sounds like a runaway starter, shorted on and the Bendix trying to engage
the ring gear.

Can you determine what the connector that stopped it goes to?

I hear the familiar tonation of a burned out starter
turning while no attempt to start the engine is found.

Your starter stuck on and destroyed itself. With any luck that's
the extent of the damage, though the ring gear needs to be examined.
(Through the removed starter's hole.) The chances are good that
it alone was at fault, though it is possible that the starter switch
is a culprit, or even something as obscure as the glow plug relay,
to which the starter line also goes (as an input). First, get out
that starter and have a look. Replacing a ring gear is no fun.
(Drop the tranny.)

I had my SD parked for quite some time.

Now I find that it will not set/hold cruise speed unless it has been driven for
approximately 20 minutes or more. If shut down (time does not matter) when
restarting again it takes approximately 20 minutes to set/hold cruise speed.

I'm thinking a vac leak. Any other suggestions?

I had ruled out the amplifier because when the cruise locks in it is in.
HOWEVER, that thought process I beleibve to be at fault. Your right it

Faulty logic. With intermittent solder joints inside it
can work perfectly one moment and be dead the next, often
thermally driven, or it can get oddly spastic as its mood
determines. Seen it both ways.

Hi folks,

I called Rusty yesterday and got a TERRIFIC price on the Flex discs for this

when I get some money in.

However an inspection today shows those discs to be good.

Any ideas where to look if I am getting a loud clunking noise (like the older

Rear End? Rear Differential? Rear Differential fluid level?

Re: [MBZ] 85 300SD

2008-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond

Actually I've been meaning to mention...

I had the summer tires put back on my 190D on Friday, had to buy 2 new ones to
replace 2 that were worn when I had bad links in the rear end.
So they put the two good old ones on the rear first while I went inside to get
the 2 replacements. The kid and I talked while he swapped those on $8/hr? Geez
When he went to hit it with the torque wrench the car started to roll away
because he'd left it on the jacks, probably since I'd distracted him...
Got it off the jacks, hit the fronts with the TW and I was off.
Had to go out to western MA on Saturday, did about 100 miles. On the way home I
started to notice a vibration I didn't like but figured I was just tired.
Vibration was back Sunday and got BAD including thunking on deceleration BAD. I
got scared until it occured to me the kid hadn't used the TW on the rear
wheels. You don't suppose?

Yup, the rears weren't even finger tight. Pulled out my lug wrench and
tightened, vibration GONE, thunking GONE. Hit 'em with my TW when I got home,
its a beam type that only goes to 75 ft/lb. I keep forgetting to go back and
get them retorqued, I should have yesterday but it was pouring...

Anyway, stupid little thing, but worth checking.

Hi folks,

I called Rusty yesterday and got a TERRIFIC price on the Flex discs for
this car's drive train. I intended to order them both (Front and
Rear) tomorrow, when I get some money in.

However an inspection today shows those discs to be good.

Any ideas where to look if I am getting a loud clunking noise (like the
older Ford truck U Joints sounded) some with acceleration and a lot
 with deceleration?

Rear End? Rear Differential? Rear Differential fluid level?

the 2 replacements.

Worn out carrier in the diff -- the spider gear shafts wear from
inadequate lubrication and the resultant oval hole allow them to move
and clank.

Easy to check -- see how much free rotation there is at the pinion.
Should be minimal, but I'm willing to bet you have quite a bit --
half a turn or so -- accompanied by a clunk as the shafts hit the end
of the oval holes.

Time for a replacment diff, and this time put synthetic lube in it.

Are you SURE the arm is BROKEN? Do you have the door apart yet. It's
usually the little (about an inch + -) square plastic slider that usually
fails. The slider is easy to replace by drilling out old rivet and brad new
copper rivet. If the arm is really BROKEN, you may need new mechanism or
splice arm.

Thanks!

[MBZ] 85 300SD Auxiliary cooling fan thermo switch interment?

2006-06-07 Thread George Larribeau
The other day when I did some service on my car, I changed the radiator hoses
(upper, lower and bypass), thermostat and fan clutch. After reassembly I have
had some interment operation of the auxiliary cooling fan (warm and hot, no
more cold operation here in Dallas). I believe that this is being caused by the
thermo switch on the thermostat housing. At what temperature is this suppose to
trip? What does it do besides turning on the auxiliary cooling fan? And why are
there 3 thermal electrical sensors on the thermostat housing. One for the aux
fan, one for the temp gauge, and one mystery sensor.

[MBZ] 85-300SD Valve Adjustment

2006-06-05 Thread George Larribeau
Adjusted Valves on 85 300SD. The intakes were between 2 and 3 and exhausts were
around 7. Set intakes to 3 lose 4 tight and exhausts to 13 lose 14 tight. Used
home made (bent cheap wrenches from Harbor Freight.) Was a bit difficult to
tighten ( may make better wrenches) and I would like to see a dismantled valve
adjuster some day to understand it better, for me it was not the most intuitive
thing. I love in Dallas Tx and the abetment temperature was at least 90F. The
hardest part was trying to predict which way the clearance would go when I
locked the adjusters, I did my best to keep the top nut steady. The factory
Docs have a tool that they use to hold the big nut just above the valve spring.
Maybe this would help, don't know.

Changed out radiator hoses ( my bypass hose was starting to leak) Used the MB
coolant from Rusty, Weird it's not quite clear but it hardly dyed (faint
Yellow? Pearl Light is darker that that!)

I would probably use carbon filtered. I used to work in the car wash

explanation I heard is that the RO water is very hungry for ions. In
a closed system like a car cooling system I think the problem would be
minimized, though, because the water won't stay deionized for long.

2006-04-27 Thread George Larribeau
My bypass hose leaks a little, nothing dreadful mind you. Yes I have tightened
the clamps so I have decided to replace it. I ordered and received new radiator
hoses Upper, lower and bypass (what a pathetically small hose to start all this
..), a thermostat and the o-rings - gasket, fan clutch, fan clutch bolts and MB
antifreeze, 2 jugs. My fan clutch is hopelessly locked up. It all looks
straightforward. Are there any tricks to refilling it with coolant air bubbles
and the like? What kind of water would one mix with the MB antifreeze? In the
past I have been a believer in distilled (demonized if available) but heard
otherwise.

I have a new thermostat, have not yet decided on replacement, my old one is
working OK.

Dan,

Motor is probably fine. Would guess that you need a regulator. They
become deformed over time.

In the mean time, you can probably nurse the window up a little at
a time. Push up, then press switch up, push up, press switch, etc

HTH and take care,

What kind of water would one mix with the MB antifreeze? In the past I have
been a believer in distilled (demonized if available) but heard otherwise.

Distilled is best, but unless your tap water is very hard it's
probably perfectly adequate.

Distilled water is NOT best, high quality drinking water - water that's
not too hard - is best. That's water that measures below about 120 ppm
or 7 grains (measure of particulate). With Mercedes approved anti-freeze
changed every couple of years, distilled water IS preferable to the hard
water that is available in more half the water taps in the US. If you're
going to BUY water, get the drinking water from the supermarket rather
than the distilled water. It is MUCH less reactive and although the
buffers in the anti-freeze WILL neutralize the reactivity of distilled
water, it shortens the life of the anti-freeze.

[MBZ] 85 300SD Brake Job

2005-09-07 Thread Mike Piles
Hello all,

I'm getting ready to do a brake job on all four wheels of my Mercedes. What
parts can I expect to replace? I haven't been into it before.

Thanks
Mike Piles

At the minimum, pads. At most, brake lines, brake fluid, pads, rotors,
calipers, and a master cylinder.

When I did the first rotor replacement on my 1994 S350, I had to remove
rolled steel pins from the axle that had no matching hole in the replacement
rotor. Three were quite stubborn. I ended up removing the hub, tack welding
a short round rod inside the pin, and hammering them out from behind with a
3-pounder.

II was looking for what parts that normally need replacement, especially
micellaneous pins, shims, clips ect. I don't know when it was last done or
when the rotors were replaced, so I'm expecting pads, rotors, brake lines.

Thanks
Mike
