Dear list, I have noticed that an increase in alleged meteorite reports in the last month or two is leading some to claim all kinds of unlikely things about the state of the cosmos. Can anyone tell me to what extent there has been an increase in actual fireball-like phenomena in, say, the last 5 years? Or is this a false impression caused by wider coverage? Hi Steve and all, Although I hope you are right Steve, a look back in the archives show that fighting has been going on almost from day one. I wouldn't hold my breath too long as there are bound to be more flame wars sooner or later. We can only hope they will be more civilized than in the past. Such negative posts are the result of more than a few people getting out of the hobby so everyone looses from such posts. Many of the people who get into disputes are really nice people for the most part that let someone get the best of them. Those posting to the list with too many negativity's, ads and so forth are automatically removed to my trash. As it has been said before don't respond to personal attacks on the list but work it out off list. I do want to thank Mike for his letting us know about this fraud attempt. AW: [meteorite-list] K20 in meteorites
Dear Michel, fairly high K2O values have been reported for C-like clast in the following meteorites: LEW 85300 (polymict eucrite) 0.47% (C clast) Supuhee (H6) 0.57% (clast) Krähenberg (LL5) 1.45% (dark portion) Miles (IIE silicated iron) 0.5% (silicates) Cumberland Falls (aubrite) 0.43% (chondritic clasts) but also as bulk content: Governador Valadares (nakhlite) 0.43% Bhola (LL3-6) 1.5% (reference: Compositional study of K-rich fragments and host material, pyroxene Fs4-25, olivine Fa27.8, F.Wlotzka et al., GCA, 1983, 47, p.743.) There are some more meteorites with high potassium contents reported, but the wet chemical analyses are fairly antique and not very trustworthy. To give a general direction: high potassium contents in whole rock material is quite unusual. Typical contents are in the order of 0.1 to 0.2% for chondrites and 0.02 to 0.05% for basaltic achondrites (grand average of 1660 analyses is 0.098%). High K values have often been reported for unusual clasts in achondrits as well as for chondrites (here mainly carbonaceous material) and silicated irons. So, it could be, that your meteorite is a clast left over (e.g. by weathering or fragmentation during fall) from a larger body. Re: [meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - June 22, 2004
Ron, I have a question about the Mars rovers. It is unbelievable how well they were engineered to not only complete the prescribed missions, but to over-extend the way they have been able to do. What is the ultimate limiting factor that will cause them to stop functioning? It seems like they have unlimited electrical, assuming that the storage cells are still able to re-charge from the solar cells. Is it the storage cells themselves that will fail first? Or are there other factors that will come into play soon that will end the extended mission? If the rovers survive the Mars winter, then they have a good chance of lasting several more months on Mars. In fact, when I last talked to Jim Erickson, the project manager, he said they are planning for an 'infinitely long mission'. Of course, a critical part on the rovers can go out at any time. The thermal cycling from night day is rather extreme. The dust accumulation on the solar arrays is also a concern, as the available power will drop with time. One of Spirit's front wheels just started to draw more power - the first sign of age on that rover. Opportunity has had a heater that has been stuck in the on position ever since landing. What finally did Mars Pathfinder in was its battery. The battery was charged during the day, and used at night to turn on the heaters to keep the lander warm at night. When the battery finally gave out, the lander was unable to keep itself warm, and after the first night without the battery, the lander was never heard from again. [meteorite-list] paper About Tunguska Event Impactor
In the March (2004) issue of Planetary and Space Science, there is a paper discussing the identity of the impactor, which produced the Tunguska Event, that might be of interest to some list members. The paper is: Q. L. Hou , E. M. Kolesnikov , L. W. Xie , N. V. Kolesnikova , M. F. Zhou and M. Sun, 2004, Platinum group element abundances in a peat layer associated with the Tunguska event, further evidence for a cosmic origin. Planetary and Space Science. vol. 52, no. 4, pp. 331-340 doi:10.1016/j.pss.2003.08.002 Based upon excess Pd, Rh, Ru, REE, Co, Sr, and Y found in a peat column from the Northern peat bog of the 1908 Tunguska explosion site, they concluded that the impactor, which created the Tunguska event was more likely a comet, although the possibility that the impactor might have alternatively been a carbonaceous asteroid. They estimated that the mass of either the comet or carbonaceous asteroid was as large as 103-106 tons. I am only reporting what this paper stated. AW: [meteorite-list] K20 in meteorites
Michel Jörn, I have no access to those references so, just wanted to ask is it conceivable that the analyses reflect potash-type runoff or contamination from: a) concentratin by long since evaporating ancient lake beds (like hot desert-low elevation in Tunisia, maybe?) b) concentration by evaporating water deposits (like Mars, maybe) c) from fertilizers' runoff (including simoon) ? Saludos Doug Dear Michel, fairly high K2O values have been reported for C-like clast in the following meteorites: LEW 85300 (polymict eucrite) 0.47% (C clast) Supuhee (H6) 0.57% (clast) Krähenberg (LL5) 1.45% (dark portion) Miles (IIE silicated iron) 0.5% (silicates) Cumberland Falls (aubrite) 0.43% (chondritic clasts) but also as bulk content: Governador Valadares (nakhlite) 0.43% Bhola (LL3-6) 1.5% (reference: Compositional study of K-rich fragments and host material, pyroxene Fs4-25, olivine Fa27.8, F.Wlotzka et al., GCA, 1983, 47, p.743.) There are some more meteorites with high potassium contents reported, but the wet chemical analyses are fairly antique and not very trustworthy. [meteorite-list] Cassini VIMS Team Finds That Phoebe May Be Kin To Comets
CASSINI VIMS TEAM FINDS THAT PHOEBE MAY BE KIN TO COMETS From Lori Stiles, UA News Services, 520-621-1877 June 23, 2004 Scientists may at last have settled the debate on the origin of Saturn's moon, Phoebe. Saturn long ago captured its largest outermost satellite, Phoebe, when the moon wandered in from the frigid region beyond the orbit of Neptune called the Kuiper belt, they conclude. The scientists analyzed results from the Cassini Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) taken during the June 11 Cassini spacecraft's Phoebe flyby. They announced the results today at a news conference at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Contact Information: Robert H. Brown 520-626-9045 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Related Web site: VIMS spectra of Phoebe Cassini VIMS Homepage http://wwwvims.lpl.arizona.edu/ Scientists have long doubted that Phoebe came from the same disk of material that formed Saturn and most of its moons. Phoebe has an unusual orbit that is inclined to Saturn's equator, revolves backward with respect to both Saturn's rotation and orbital motion, and travels in the opposite direction of Saturn's other satellites. Phoebe is widely believed to have wandered past Saturn and been captured by that planet's mighty gravitational field. Where it wandered from was the question. All our evidence leads us to conclude that Phoebe's surface is made of water ice, water-bearing minerals, carbon dioxide, possible clays and primitive organic chemicals in different locations on the surface, VIMS team member Roger N. Clark of the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver said a few days after the flyby. We also see spectral signatures of materials that we have not yet identified. It is clear that the materials in Phoebe's surface bear little resemblance to the predominantly rocky material found in asteroids in the belt between Mars and Jupiter. The materials that make up Phoebe formed farther out in the solar system, where it is cold enough for them to remain stable. One intriguing result of the VIMS measurements is the discovery of possible chemical similarities between the materials on Phoebe and those seen on comets, said VIMS team leader Robert H. Brown of the University of Arizona. Short period comets are thought to sit among other primitive solar system debris in the Kuiper belt, until tugged by Neptune's gravity toward the inner solar system. Evidence that Phoebe might be chemically kin to comets strengthens the case that it's similar to Kuiper Belt Objects. The VIMS instrument is an imaging spectrometer that produces a special data set called an image cube. It takes an image of an object in many colors simultaneously. An ordinary video camera takes images in three primary colors (red, green, and blue) and combines them to produce images as seen by the human eye. The VIMS instrument takes images in 352 separate colors, spanning a realm of colors far beyond those visible to humans. All materials reflect light in a unique way. So molecules of any element or compound can be identified by the colors they reflect or absorb, their signature spectra. The VIMS team knew the basic chemical make-up of Phoebe only a few days after flyby. That Phoebe likely comes from the Kuiper belt and not from the Mars-Jupiter asteroid belt is another first for the Cassini mission, Brown noted. Cassini has become the first spacecraft to flyby a Kuiper belt object, he said. Cassini flew by Phoebe on June 11. Cassini will conduct a critical 96-minute main-engine burn before going into orbit around Saturn on June 30 (July 1 Universal Time). During Cassini's planned four-year tour it will conduct 76 orbits around the Saturn system and execute 52 close encounters with seven of Saturn's 31 known moons. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The VIMS team is based at the University of Arizona in Tucson. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi List, I was going to save this for later but here goes , I have what looks like a paired stone to Michel Franco's Sahara 03500 But this stone is somewhat different as it shows clearly what looks like chondrules in the darker material. Someone has stated that he thinks Michel's stone is a huge clast, Michel's stone doesn't show any of this chondrule material like my stone does, and if paired with Michel's stone could show the reason why Michel has a problem with his classification . I am not going to speculate any further on this one, I will leave it up to the Scientists if they so choose to investigate this stone further. Anyway here is the link to a huge picture of a 44 gram main mass of my stone that was originally 69 grams. Please excuse the crude web site. [meteorite-list] Cassini Opens A Cosmic Time Capsule (Phoebe)
Donald Savage Headquarters, WashingtonJune 23, 2004 (Phone: 202/358-1547) Carolina Martinez Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. (Phone: 818/354-9382) RELEASE: 04-202 CASSINI OPENS A COSMIC TIME CAPSULE Like a woolly mammoth trapped in Arctic ice, Saturn's small moon Phoebe may be a frozen artifact of a bygone era, some four billion years ago. The finding is suggested by new data from the Cassini spacecraft. Cassini scientists reviewed data from the spacecraft's June 11, 2004, flyby of the diminutive moon. They concluded Phoebe is likely a primordial mixture of ice, rock and carbon- containing compounds similar in many ways to material seen in Pluto and Neptune's moon Triton. Scientists believe bodies like Phoebe were plentiful in the outer reaches of the solar system about four and half billion years ago. These icy planetesimals (small bodies) formed the building blocks of the outer solar system and some were incorporated into the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. During this process, gravitational interactions ejected much of this material to distant orbits, joining a native population of similar bodies to form the Kuiper Belt. Phoebe apparently stayed behind, trapped in orbit about the young Saturn, waiting eons for its secrets to be revealed during its rendezvous with the Cassini spacecraft, said Dr. Torrence Johnson, Cassini imaging team member at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, Calif. All our evidence leads us to conclude, Phoebe's surface is made of water ice, water-bearing minerals, carbon dioxide, possible clays and primitive organic chemicals in patches at different locations on the surface, said Dr. Roger N. Clark, team member for the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer, U.S. Geological Survey in Denver. We also see spectral signatures of materials we have not yet identified. Cassini's observations gave scientists the first detailed look at one of these primitive icy planetesimals. Phoebe's mass was determined from precise tracking of the spacecraft and optical navigation, combined with an accurate volume estimate from images. The measurements yield a density of about 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter (100 pounds per cubic foot), much lighter than most rocks, but heavier than pure ice at approximately 0.93 grams per cubic centimeter (58 pounds per cubic foot). This suggests a composition of ice and rock similar to Pluto and Triton. Spectral measurements, light intensity as a function of color or wavelength, confirmed the presence of water ice previously detected by Earth-based telescopes. The measurements provided evidence for hydrated minerals on Phoebe's surface, detected carbon dioxide and solid hydrocarbons similar to those found in primitive meteorites. One intriguing result is the discovery of possible chemical similarities between the materials on Phoebe and those seen on comets, said Dr. Robert H. Brown, team leader for the Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer, University of Arizona, Tucson. Evidence Phoebe might be chemically kin to comets strengthens the case it is similar to Kuiper Belt Objects. Measurements taken by the Composite Infrared Spectrometer were used to generate temperature maps. The maps show the surface of Phoebe is very cold, only about 110 degrees above absolute zero (-163 degrees Celsius, or -261 degrees Fahrenheit). Even colder nighttime temperatures suggest a fluffy, porous surface layer. One of the first results from this map is the surface of Phoebe has been badly chewed up, probably by meteorite impacts, said Dr. John Pearl, a Cassini co-investigator for the Composite Infrared Spectrometer, at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. We are discovering Phoebe is a very complex object, with large variations in topography. Cassini also made radar observations of Phoebe's enigmatic surface, making it the first spacecraft radar observations of an outer-planet moon. The results are consistent with the dirty, rocky, icy surface suggested by other observations. We have conducted our first analysis of an outer solar system resident akin to Kuiper Belt Objects, said Dr. Dennis Matson, project scientist of the Cassini-Huygens mission at JPL. In two short weeks, we have added more to what we know about Phoebe than we had learned about it since it was discovered 100 years ago. We did this by having multiple instruments conducting investigations all at one time during our flyby, Matson said. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL manages the mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington. [meteorite-list] Any Old Bootids?
Dear Listees: Greetings. Thanks to Jim Strope for posting info about the Bootids meteor shower, earlier this week. Did anyone try observing last night? I went out for three fairly short sessions between about 10:45 pm and 1:30 am, and saw eight meteors, two of which were nice and bright, and another two of which were probably erratics. Will try again on June 26/27 for the second predicted/possible peak. This was my first time observing a meteor shower since moving to Tucson in January of this year. What a difference from New York! On the East Coast we had to drive 50 miles to get away from city lights and then deal with cloud cover, mosquitoes, cold nights, etc. In dark sky-friendly N.W. Tucson, I just put the deck chair out in the garden and kick back with a cocktail. Sweet! : ) In other news, I'd like to mention that I recently visited the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. The observatory is beautifully situated on a hilltop just outside of Flagstaff, and offers night viewings most evenings. We were treated to an exceptional view of globular clusters M5 and M13, and a binary star pair, through the impressive, vintage Clark telescope -- the very one through which Pluto was discovered! There is a modest meteorite display at the Lowell, consisting of a hefty Canyon Diablo, a nice large Holbrook, a Brenham part slice, some tektites, and a Plainview individual and part slice with Nininger number. Admission for the night viewing is only five bucks or $4 if you're AAA or a senior. Well worth it if you're in the area, but be prepared for a lot of kids, and of course some clown always has to be told to turn off their flashlight : ) Watch the skies! Not sure if they are all on this list but you could contact them through the COMETS Yahoo groupslist. Since you are moving you might consider joining the club. This would go for anyone in Colorado as well as outside the state. For those of you who are not familiar with the club we started over 4 years ago. We hold monthly meetings in Denver and occasionally in the Springsas well. We try to have a topic or themerelated to meteorites. Right now we have 35 members on our email list with at least 25 of those from in state. Most meetings have 10-15 members attending. So if anyone wants to attend our meetings please sign up for our Yahoo group. We meet at different times each month so that is the only way to find out when the meeting is. I almost forgot to mention we hold a lot of meetings at one of the club members ice cream shop. There is no better way finish a meeting than with a big scoop of cold hand made ice cream. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/COMeteoriteClub/ Good luck in the Springs. I'm sure you will love it. If you need my street address please email me off-List. I have been extremely busy but the good news is that our collection is completely cataloged and several new extremely rare classifications have come in. Greg is moving to Lakeland Florida and I moved 32 miles away to a place called Titlow Beach were I have been enjoying sunsets, beach combing and hiking. Unfortunately there is an awesome pub across the street were I have been spending far too much time being entertained by the locals. We have several expeditions planned so we will be quite busy this summer. We will continue to update between expeditions. A quick update on the June 3rd bolide sightings. We pursued over a half a dozen leads with no success at this point. We have two promising leads where material has been recovered and sent to the University of Washington. Our fingers are crossed that one or the other will be meteoritic. Wishing everybody the best, Adam Hupe The Hupe Collection Team LunarRock IMCA 2185 __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] I am broken
You know the drill Matteo...you have to unsubscribe yourself. In parting, I think I can speak for a majority of list members when I say that we have a great deal of affection and respect for European meteorite collectors and dealers - the honest ones, that is. This list moreover is full of racists against the European collectors and dealers, not to mention what they say of the Italians, above all in the private emails, true Randy Mills, where they do not have courage to send them in public. I go definitively from this list, my friends know where to contact me, while as far as this list I will know to make of a good publicity for who will try to enroll itself. Matteo Ah Farmer, is good for you not put your face here in Italy.the same for the friends of Farmer. And now Unsuscribe me from this racist list! Amen brother John. I can also say that Art (the moderator of this list), must be one of the most forgiving souls that I have ever met. If everyone can recall Matteo's Proud Tom spoof website of his own creation, to where Art licks the of Mike Farmer and Art the Rabbit and the sorts. For Art to allow Matteo back on the list with another email address shows GREAT forgiveness on his part. Too bad Matteo had to take it to the next level with eBay. NO one on this list has any hard feeling for any European collector, Asian collector, or any race/creed whatsoever. We all have a common bond and an enthusiasm for meteorites. The only rascist I see on the list is Matteo himself. He's the one with the Al-Qaeda mentality here...no one else. Best wishes to all, and to all a good night!
