Re: [meteorite-list] Idea for list to think about

2007-03-15 Thread mark ford
Why not just put 'meteorite ML' in the ebay description instead of
'Meteorite' Then just 3 extra characters is all it would use, least it
would cut out the meteorite caravans, lipsticks, eye shadows, lamps,
CD's etc !!

Putting code in the title is not really feisable. I am
often short space anyway and already include my own
code for example.
However, if an odd code was inserted into the text, if
you set the ebay search parameters to Search title
and description you might still end up with the same
result that you want and could filter them all to your
site.

 Hello Everyone!

One of our beta testers asked if we could do
 something to filter out the
junk ebay auctions. Here is one idea.

If all the meteorite-lists Sellers added the same
 code (example

 all of the Buyers
could search using that code and eliminate the junk.
  On our page
visitors would have a choice of All ebay Sellers

I don't know if there is enough interest to warrant
 the extra step all
the sellers would have to do. If anybody feels
 strongly one way or
another please discuss. If the list is in favor of
 this, I suggest we
Not take up list bandwidth discussing what the code
 should be. We should
let a few of the major players choose what works
 best for them.

[meteorite-list] Steve Arnold's Impressive Gao Collection

2007-03-15 Thread bernd . pauli
Knock, knock !

You seem to be building quite a collection of Gao! Go get 'em!

The next step in his obsession -- head for the strewn field.

Hello Steve and List,

First off: I must also admit that this is becoming a very impressive,
an awesome collection of Gao meteorites! Sincere congratulations!

The next best step after displaying them for all of us to see, would or could
now be to study them, to compare them, to look at their respective fusion
crusts, to describe their individual characteristics, to do a little research on
their different degrees of weathering (and maybe even shock stage[s]), the
thickness or thinness of their fusion crusts, and so much more and then share
your observations with the List. This would give them a life.

Of course, you might also consider constructing a special Gao info page:

dates of fall / find, classification, history, repositories, strewn field
parameters,
scientific papers / articles, and, and, and, ...

The next step in his obsession -- head for the strewn field.

.. Well, why not!? Gao instead of London if the risks involved are not too high!
He would surely come back with some personal finds or purchases.

Such specimens have an even higher, personal value!

Best regards,

Bernd

Hi All,

if you enter: meteorite* (worldwide) you get 2194 meteorite related
hits.

If you are looking for meteorites only and e.g. you have enough
NWA's, Campos, Nantans,... and you enter:

meteorit* -guerlain -tektit* -rolex -invicta -campo -ring -
moldavite -nwa* -nan* -bin -sahara* -pendant*

you get 866 hits that are more likely what you are looking for.

[meteorite-list] Family Claims To Have Seen A Meteorite Hit The Ground in Canada

Family sees meteorite hit ground
Michael Power
Yorkregion.com
March 15, 2007

What Richard Yip-Chuck saw fall into a farmer's field Sunday
evening looked like a long, white ball with orange sparks
shooting off the back.

The Holland Landing resident was driving along Hwy. 7 with
his wife, Ele, and sons Kyle, 12, and 10-year-old Dylan,
when they saw what looked like a fireball plummet to earth.

There were sparks coming out of the back, Mr. Yip-Chuck
said. It was wild.

The bright flashes of light in the sky Sunday led to police
switchboards in Toronto, York and Durham regions lighting
up with people wondering what was happening.

People called saying they had seen a fireball in the sky
between 8 and 8:30 p.m.

The Yip-Chucks, who were returning from hockey games in
Lindsay where both sons play on the same team, saw the
meteorite hit a farmers' field west of Lindsay, about an
hour from Newmarket.

His younger son, Dylan, thought the fireball might
have been a UFO, Mr. Yip-Chuck said.

He was freaking out, saying, 'We've got to get off the
road,' he said. But it was really cool, moving really
fast. Whatever was coming off it was really bright.

The ball of light at first appeared to be a meteor, but
also seemed too large for a falling rock, said Mr.
Yip-Chuck's older son, Kyle.

The ball looked to be about the size of a car, said Kyle,
who plays for the York Simcoe Express AAA hockey team.

The meteorite was probably about the size of a fist,
given so many people in the GTA were able to see it,
said Paul Delaney, a professor of physics and astronomy
at York University.

 Hi All,

if you enter: meteorite* (worldwide) you get 2194 meteorite related

If you are looking for meteorites only and e.g. you have enough

meteorit* -guerlain -tektit* -rolex -invicta -campo -ring -
moldavite -nwa* -nan* -bin -sahara* -pendant*

you get 866 hits that are more likely what you are looking for.

[meteorite-list] Gao, Gao Gao

2007-03-15 Thread Zelimir Gabelica

Hello Bernd, list,

Bernd, thanks much for your wise thoughts and advices. Gao is indeed a very
popular meteorite, probably because it is as showy as abundant in weight
and (different) shapes. I can understand Steve's falling in love for these.
I also second your suggestion, namely that Steve should do more to valorize
his Gao collection.

This brings me to a question that is probably puzzling most of us since a
while.
You might not ignore that besides our old good friend Gao (H5) (that
actually carries the official name Gao-Guenié), there are 2 other Gaos
(or Gao-Guéniés):

1) Gao(b) that is a CR (S1), found by Eric Twelker in a parcel full of
normal Gaos sent to him from Burkina Faso. The 2 small stones he got
weighed 344 g (Bernd, by the way, a slice of that stuff is just
outstanding! I bet you also got one See Eric's site: there are 2 pieces
left!)

2) The Gao-melt (H imb) described and put for sale by Eric Olson. This
stuff is definitely far different from Gao (H5) in that, when cut, this
almost black meteorite shows melts and rivers just as Portales or others.

Definitely a weird stuff. See pictures on Eric's site.
E. Olson is reporting a tkw of 570+ grams. However, I got a few years ago 3
such Gao-melt individuals from a quite different source (directly from
Burkina, not from Eric's source) that are exactly the same. They already
showed a weird outline when complete (uncut). Once cut, not only they
showed the strange metled parts but also huge vugs, some of which reaching
20+ mm !!
E. Olson is anouncing on his site since a time that these are under
study. Did someone got more recent news ?

Note: my source confirmed thet Gao imb and Gao (H5) are (still being) found
on the unique strewnfield. To my knowledge, nothing is known about the
place where Gao(b) was found...

I suggest Steve starts inquiring about these other 2 Gaos and perhaps
envisages to extend his collection to Gao, Gao and Gao.

By the way, here are the tkw's I have in my archives:

Gao-Guénié (H5): [EMAIL PROTECTED] kg
Gao-Guénié (H imb): [EMAIL PROTECTED] g (Olson's site)
Gao-Guénié (b) (CR)): 2@@344 g (Twelker's site)

Could someone (along with the two Erics) provide an update for these figures ?

Thanks and have a nice day all,

Zelimir

Knock, knock !

Hello Steve and List,

First off: I must also admit that this is becoming a very impressive,
an awesome collection of Gao meteorites! Sincere congratulations!

The next best step after displaying them for all of us to see, would or could
now be to study them, to compare them, to look at their respective fusion
crusts, to describe their individual characteristics, to do a little
research on

their different degrees of weathering (and maybe even shock stage[s]), the
thickness or thinness of their fusion crusts, and so much more and then share
your observations with the List.

Gao instead of London if the risks involved are not too
high!

He would surely come back with some personal finds or purchases.

Such specimens have an even higher, personal value!

Best regards,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] eBay filtering tricks

2007-03-15 Thread Matson, Robert
Hi Mark,

Since the meteorite category on eBay is huge, filtering is the only
way to separate the wheat from the chaff (where one person's wheat
could be another's chaff). Peter Marmet has already suggested
the use of exclusions and wildcards, e.g.

meteorite -rolex -campo -nan*

Another approach is to do specific searches for items you DO
want. Suppose you're only interested in martian or lunar
meteorites. You could use:

meteorite (mars, martian, luna*)

Voila! A manageable 83 items to scan through. --Rob

I always click on the first 5-10 auctions, that way I know when I get to a

If there is a obvious overload' by one dealer (a single dealer listing a
50-100 items at once, which is not a bad thing) i go to the second page

To all you dealers that do not use the Gallery Photo Option, I don't even
look at those auctions and many people have told me the same so you might

Anyone guesses about the tkw of Gao?

I learned that Carion, the master, alone brought 500kgs of Gao during the
decades together.

Hehe, I have also a Gao(c) oder (d) or (e),
in a batch of dusty Gaos from Carion, there was one, which turned out after
cutting not to be a Gao, but a different ordinary chondrite, rather an L
than a H.
Unfortunately it had only 10g, so it still lays around here unclassified.

Btw. I personally don't like, if the crust from the more weathered and later
finds are pimped to look black again.
Uuuuh I saw some early Gaos, they are stunners!

Re: [meteorite-list] Suspected Meteorite GoesThroughWindowinIllinois

2007-03-15 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi Chris -

I wonder if you could use strewn field data to
estimate the porosity of the different types of parent
asteroids?

good hunting,
Ed

--- Chris Peterson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Well shoot, Doug, it sounds like you've got more
 time than I to analyze
this thing. I do have a modeling tool that
 calculates the vertical
deviation for spherical objects falling in wind, but
 I haven't tried to
apply it here. I don't know how accurate it would be
 given that this
object is far from spherical. I use this tool to
 estimate strewn field
 locations following high altitude fragmentations.

Just to clarify a point of apparent confusion: I was
 proposing two
completely different mechanisms that could impart a
 degree of horizontal
motion to a falling object. One is largely
 non-aerodynamic (except in a
trivial sense), and involves the object reaching a
 horizontal zero
airspeed (which in a wind means there is a non-zero
 ground speed). The
second is purely aerodynamic, and involves what
 happens when the object
is oriented and possibly tumbling. The first
 situation isn't too
difficult to analyze (we've both touched on parts of
 that); the second
is pretty much impossible to deal with.

The test case I alluded to was something I tried at
 the Roan Cliffs in
western Colorado, above Rifle (famous for a
 meteoritic non-crater that
the locals like to show off). There's an interesting
 spot up top where
winds are diverted upward. If you throw a stick
 over, it drops down and
then gets picked up, and can be carried many feet
 above the cliff top.
There's even a waterfall there that goes up when it
 reaches the edge,
and the water just evaporates overhead. But if you
 drop a flat rock,
like the sort you'd skim on a lake, it drops down,
 and will tumble
violently. It may literally look like a leaf
 falling, and can veer out
10 feet or more, or back into the side of the cliff
 hard enough to hear
when it's hundreds of feet down. A spherical rock
 just drops straight. I
tried this with dozens of different rocks. There's
no doubt at all in my
mind that something shaped like the Illinois object,
 traveling at ~50
m/s, could execute some pretty impressive aerial
 maneuvers.

BTW, I'm not particularly arguing that this thing
 did fall, only
 considering that it seems plausible.

 zero airspeed. So if
  this

 a brief gust, it

 aerodynamics.

OK Chris, I think I understand your assumptions

 I will put some
  'hard'

perhaps use them for your own thoughts).

It is also why there can be no apparent
 relationship between the
orientation of a strewn field and the path of the
 meteor that produced
  it.

I think this is as poor an example as it is an
 interesting meteorite

But I agree that the physics of the wind are at
 work for this case.
  My
objection: You are comparing the integrated effect
 of all winds in all
directions at all altitudes (for a significant
 distance) with local
atmospheric effects of a relatively unidirectional
 ''steady wind'.

Now for the numbers I promised:

This meteorthing has the following characteristics
 assuming it really
  is in
free fall as you believe (compared to the 60 mph
 suggested somewhere
  else,
that did not specify it was vt though that had to
 be the professor's
  assumption):

Let me make a meteorthing terminal speed table
 showing how long it
  takes to
  fall a mile:
  Shield orientation:38 m/s (86mph)42
 sec
  Average orientation47 m/s (105mph)34 sec
  Edge first orientation:55 m/s (124mph)29

from many other list members. I doubt that I can ever repay these folks for
their kindness. Please do not look for negative aspects in the people on
this list.

Gary, please do not take this as a personal attack back at you. It is
nothing of the sort. Maybe some of the emails going back and forth
regarding either a shady deal, or someone's business ethics have given you
the impression that the list members are only out to make as money as they
can for themselves. It has been my experience that this is far from the
truth.

Well, as Mr. Roarke used to say on Fantasy Island: Smiles everybody,
smiles!

If all the meteorite-lists Sellers added the same code (example
ML1947) in the title of all their auctions then all of the Buyers
could search using that code and eliminate the junk. On our page
visitors would have a choice of All ebay Sellers or Meteorite-List

[meteorite-list] Question: Just How ...?

2007-03-15 Thread Robert Woolard
Hello List,

There was a lot of interest and positive comments on
the thread concerning whether or not members still had
their first meteorite. I'd like to ask a related
question that I think might be interesting.

The question is: How did you find out that it was
possible to actually BUY a meteorite!?

I will list the most likely ways that come to my
mind (doubtless there will be others) in no particular
order:

1.Magazine AD (such as Astronomy or Sky Telescope)

2.Magazine ARTICLE about collecting meteorites

3.Catalog offering meteorites for sale

4.Internet browsing and accidentally came across

5.TV program, featuring Haag, Farmer, etc.

6.Friend was a collector and got you hooked, too

7.You are a mineral collector, led to meteorites

9.You are a fossil collector, led to meteorites

10.Auction listed meteorites up for bid

11.Other

OK, that's about all the ways I can think of right
off hand. I hope that the question is of interest.

And by the way, MY answer would be #5 above, as I
saw a VERY young Robert Haag on the David Letterman
show WAY back in 1986. I was thrilled to see that here
was a guy who was actually making it possible for me
to buy my very own meteorite! I called directory
assistance the very next day, got Robert's telephone
number, called him, ordered 10 specimens, and what
a ride it has been since!!

  Best wishes,
  Robert Woolard

Hi Ingo,
You are right, the message was perhaps too strong.
I probably would take one or two words from it, now.
Patience.
But I still remember the insults that I received when the discussion was
with me.
Many of this so-called meteorite hunters are not far from criminals (at
least from a moral perspective), simply taking advantage of the absence of
specific legislation in most of the countries, and people`s naivety.
Call

it enterpreneurs attitude, if you prefer.
Some of them were selling hamburguers, or plumbing, before entering into
their new scientific activity...
I am sorry if I do not simpatize with them.
I must add that obviously SOME of them too are great people, with an
honest

interest and real knowledge on the subject.
Those would have much more to say in list than the usual stars.

Hi Armando!

I think like you in a way! Many dealers, who are part of this list, do
look at meteorites only in a profit oriented way. They are not really
interested in the material and its scientific importance. The list is
only a big publicity place for them, nothing more.
The cut the material into crumbs and tell they would serve the science
and so on. They see the list as a place for personal fights and not
as a place to let knowledge growth!

I'm pissed of this behaviour and I know a lot of list members (like you
and many more) too!

Armando, please don't go down to their level and attack someone
personally, like you have done in the mail below. This should not be our
way!

Try to make your protest in a smarter way

2007-03-15 Thread Thaddeus Besedin
Adam,
Antique applies to cultural artifacts, and artifacts represent sites -
places - often without surviving architecture, so must be treated like
components of an architecture of events;often, lithics (flaked/ground tools and
production waste) and ceramics are the only record of the life of humans in
North America and their astonishing survival in extreme environments without
the conveniences that we enjoy, which today permit uncontrolled collection for
personal gain and vulgar trophies, so should only be removed if threatened,
with an interest in dedicated research, and with positional control - as well
as permission. These artifacts are not treasure in the commercial sense; we
would not remove marble columns from Greek ruins, or stelae from an Egyptian
temple.

Adam Hupe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Dear List,

I can understand the reluctance to report meteorite
finds in the Mojave with such gray areas in the law
surrounding the finds. You can talk to ten different
authorities and get ten different answers. A big part
of the problem is that there are several overlapping
laws, both state and federal that do not seem to
address meteorites directly. There is the other
problem that some groups make up junk to scare off
other hunters. Here are some terms that I find
ambiguous at best:

Antique - anything over 100 years old. This would
apply to water which was brought here by comets
billions a years ago or vitually any mineral unless
you are searching near an active valcano.

Of scientific value - This could apply to dog crap in
some circumstances.

For non-commercial purposes - This makes sense to me
but what happens to the 250 pounds a year of minerals
that were pulled from federal land for non-commercial
purposes that were deemed legal when somebody passes
on? What if the finders offspring has no interest in
collecting meteorites and wants to sell them? I was
also told that federal agents do monitor eBay for
hunters selling Mojave meteorites for commercial
purposes. I have no problem with this since I keep
all of my finds regardless of what type of treasure
hunting I am involved with. The only exception is to
return a lost piece of jewelry if the rightful owner
can be found or when something has historic value, in
which case, I will turn it over to a museum. I have
been treasure hunting for 32 years and feel it is
better to work with authorities whenever possible.
Luckily the treasure hunting community has a code of
ethics that saved the hobby which almost went extinct
in the 70s because of property abuses.

Artifact - I agree that Native American artifacts
should be left alone in designated areas, it simply is
not worth the consequences of removal. Not only that,
they represent very little value to the finder who
will probably ending up throwing them in a box and
forgetting about them. In this case, I find the hunt
to be more exciting than the acquisition. I know it
is difficult not to pick up points or shards of
pottery when encountered (I know first hand) but feel
it would be better to take images of them next to a
GPS and report them. After all, the main fun is in the
hunt and most of us are after meteorites which are
legal to bring out under most circumstances, up to 250
pounds a year if you are lucky. I feel it is better to
call ahead and find out what laws govern certain areas
before hunting. I found out last week, it is illegal
to carry a magnet on a stick into a designated site
containing artifacts in California. I was told this
while getting a permit to legally enter and camp on
Ivanpah.

I know a lot of these laws are being twisted to govern
meteorites, were written for minerals and have only
been enforced once in regards to meteorites but feel
it would be better to operate in a open environment
until these laws can be challenged in Federal or
Supreme Court to clarify them.

Best Regards,

Adam

Subject: [meteorite-list] How to display Your collection ? PolandMET idea !

Hi
Tooday I finished my little display stand for my new private meteorite
collection, so I want to show You my idea.

First, I must explain that I have stop collecting small specimens some
time ago. I have from old days around 70 meteorite specimens from a
miligrams to 10-20g hiddend into small boxes 58x38x17mm and stored in
palets in chet in my room. This specimens have for me historical value
becouse several of this pieces are my first meteorite specimens. But in
fact this kind of collection is a vaste of material, money and place,
becouse this specimens are too small to display for example on wall or to
show to normall peoples. Noone will take this kind of collecting
seroiously if I will show him for example very rare and importand Orguel
3mm wide or other specimens in size from 5mm to 2cm wide. Ofcourse
everyone collecting what he like. I decided that this small pieces make
only my collection larger on my specimens inventory list, but not show any
educational value to me or to anyone who invite me. Thats why I will sell
most of them.

I decided to collect less specimens but in size that will fit to my larger
acrylic boxes 84x59x24 mm. This gives me chance to own good size specimens
that I can display in my room in secured boxes. Yes, display, but how ???

And here comes my idea that I have planned and realized from around 3
months. Project changed several times, sometimes becouse of a costs of
some parts, and sometimes becouse I cant find elements that I needed. I
usually doing things without any detailed plan. So usually final project
is much different from first one.

Project:
This is 100x100cm big wall stand for 150 meteorite boxes.
Main element is 1mm thin aluminum plate with perforation Rv5-8 that help
to put all elements together precise in place and make project visualy
more hi-tech. It is mounted on a 4mm white ply-wood plate and conected
with aluminium plate using aluminium U type profile. Most importand part
of my project is 150x 20mm wide neodynum magnets that holds on place
meteorite boxes. Boxes with meteorites have small 1mm thin iron plate on
bottom side, under layers of sponge. This is good becouse boxes can be
takeed from my stand very easy, but they still sit on place using force
beetween magnets and iron plate.

This stand, when will be full, then will corelate with my mega poster of
Sahara meteorites composed from reference cards from Sahara Meteorite
Prospecting CD-Rom. From left will be photos and classifications of many
Sahara finds, and from right my collection of real specimens that anyone
can watch and touch.

Comments welcome :)

[meteorite-list] Very special ad - Burnwell, KY

2007-03-15 Thread Rhett Bourland

Hi everyone,

I know I haven't been active in the meteorite community lately due to work
and family obligations but I'm here today to raise a bit of money by selling
one of the crown jewels of my collection; a 4.1g slice of Burnwell.

For those of you unfamiliar with Burnwell, depending on where you read about
it, it is classified as either an anomalous H4 or HH4. Yes, HH4. There is
a total of one of these in the world and it hit a house in Burnwell,
KY USAon September 4, 1990 and a total of around 3kg TKW.
Almost all of this meteorite is in the Smithsonian. I say almost all of it
because in 2001 I was lucky enough to be the only person to receive part of
it (a little over 12g). I had it cut up and sold or traded most of it away
to other collectors while keeping the largest portion of it for myself. This
piece has beautiful dark crust on one edge as well as a Smithsonian number
painted on it. There is NO weathering on it at all and it looks like a
stone that fell yesterday. The many visible chondrules (some armored) are
easy to spot and truth be told, I'm kind of surprised that this was
classified as a HH4 and not an HH3. Other than cutting it has been treated
by expert Jim Hartman to prevent any aging and has been in a membrane case
for the past 5 years. I will also include the shipping papers from the
Smithsonian so you can track the ownership from space to your door. To read
more about how the Smithsonian obtained this meteorite read here
http://www.agiweb.org/geotimes/dec99/feature.html For those of you wary of
purchasing a meteorite from someone you may not know, check out the IMCA's
site at http://imca.cc/insights/2006/IMCA-Insights01.htm to read about how I
helped form the association.

Put simply, this is the largest privately owned piece of an entire class of
meteorite that has hit a house in America, has excellent pedigree, and is
simply beautiful. How often does a chance like this come up? Asking price
is $8,000. I'll pay for first class insured shipping to your door.

If interested please feel free to call me at 812-484-8369 at any time or
write back to me. This offer stands until noon March 15, 2007, Eastern
Standard Time.

Thank you for your time,

Rhett Bourland

Hi all from sunny Tucson! Finally it warmed up, here.

The Yearly Birthday Bash was a BLAST! Pity to all those who missed it. It
was so packed the building security had to limit admitance and locked the
doors. About 15 people were stuck outside.

But back to HAIR. Oh do I have a treat for you! I was able to get Steve
Arnold, of Brenham fame into selling a lock of his oh-so-sexy WORLD FAMOUS
METEORITE HUNTER's hair. And for a good cause...

We're talking, PREMO uber rare Carbonaceous hair! With PROVINANCE! Comes
with a signed and dated document to the removal of said Carbonaceous slice
 off of his swollen cranium.

Imagine this glorious specimen for your collection! With Specimin card!
Truely, a piece worthy as the centerpiece of any collection.

This lock of hair will be put on eBay upon my return to Austin. The
proceeds of this auction will be donated to the Walter Branch cause via
Maria. Is this not a worthy cause? So to one and all... don't pass up
this opportunity to get a piece of Steve Arnold, Brenham!

[meteorite-list] newbies corner

2007-03-15 Thread Robin Galyan
Just wondering if there is a particular website or chatlist someplace suitable
for newbies.

I have need for starter info, for myself and for a couple friends that live in
the desert, such as:

Where can I get a good 1cm cube? Need to enhance my photos with one, dont
want a plastic one if possible.
What is the exact proceedure one should follow now when they find a meteorite,
do they send it someplace still?
Small chunks as well as large or what are the guidelines?
What metal detectors do folks find the easiest to modify? The last we built
had a large arm that swong back and forth over the desert floor, but the
actual coil was only about 1ft dia.

So, stuff like that

Ebay. I had been buying fossils on Ebay for years and, one day, started

Re: [meteorite-list] Question: Just How ...?

2007-03-15 Thread Norm Lehrman
Robert and all,

My story is a little twisted and includes some good
educational insights.

As a field geologist, I saw everyone's curiosity
rocks. I skipped work to go visit meteorite (wannabe)
craters that suddenly appeared in fields.

My first quality meteorwrong was a big hunk of the
infamous Montana elk hunter find, reputedly miles from
nowhere, packed out on horseback, and ultimately
given to me. It turned out to be cohenite, an iron
carbide, that had actually been reported in meteorites
but not known to occur naturally on earth. For years,
I was pretty sure it was a winner. Bit by bit, my
suspicions grew ( in sync with slowly growing
meteorite knowledge--). Skipping to the conclusion, I
am now sure it is industrial slag.

The next very good meteorwrong came at a gold show. A
gold dredger had found a bunch of metal fragments in
the Clackamas river in Oregon and was selling them by
the piece. He assured me that the main mass had been
given to the Smithsonian. I was teaching at the
community college level at the time, and wanted some
pieces to pass around. I sorted through the pile and
picked out a couple with nice rounded shoulders with
molten spatters down the sides. They still look
really good! And lots of people still remember them
as the first piece of deep space/deep time that they
have ever held in their hands. I'm now sure that they
are also slag.

Don't assume your professor knows meteorites from bat
guano!

Finally, I had gotten going on tektites and hit the
big Tucson show. I knew Eric Olsen from emails, and
got to meet him. I asked him to recommend a good
stony meteorite to help me calibrate my eye, and he
sold me a fine little fully crusted Gao, which I still
have, my first meteorRight! I bought a bunch more
NWAs on that trip, and on the strength of those
calibration tools, I finally found my first for sure,
no doubt about it meteorite.

Thanks for the memories,
Norm

Re: [meteorite-list] Question: Just How ...?

2007-03-15 Thread Frank Cressy
Hello Robert and all,

Interesting topic. Like Norm, I'm also a geologist
and have been consulting for about 20 years now. Every
once in a while someone would bring in the family
Rock, ...that treasure they had carried from place to
place over the years because they knew it was
valuable. Back in 1997, someone brought in a large
wind/water sculpted sandstone (complete with
crossbedding) wanting me to confirm it was a valuable
meteorite. I hadn't seen any meteorites in person at
that time, but knew right away this wasn't one.
Anyway, I decided that I'd better see if I could buy a
meteorite on ebay to better educate myself should one
of those valuable family rocks actually be a
meteorite. I purchased about a 100 gram Sikhote Alin
from Jim Strope and also purchased a copy of Rocks
from Space. Still have both. Then I discovered
stoney meteorites, so purchased a small Gao, and then
a tektite...then a small Millbillillie (needed an
achondrite of course), how about a stoney iron, better
get a small Vaca Muerta slice...and on..and on...

Guess now I'm really addicted...

Cheers,
Frank

Does this strike anyone else as an attempt to help a commercial site
make more
$$$
by streamlining their output at your expense?

Gary

If all the meteorite-lists Sellers added the same code (example
ML1947) in the title of all their auctions then all of the Buyers
could search using that code and eliminate the junk. On our page
visitors would have a choice of All ebay Sellers or Meteorite-List
Sellers and would not have to remember any code.

Gary,
I think that if you had paid your dues to the meteorite community,
like Jim and Paul have, no one would have acted out against
you. Both of these men are as good as you will ever find anywhere
and I'm offended by your attitude and insinuation. If you want to
endear yourself to the Meteorite List why don't you take some of the
bad guys to task. Railing on Jim and Paul will only get you grief.

Gary

So that would be a no then!! Lol

And no, I don't think it's attempt to make more $$ either - I also find
it really annoying having to spend hours on ebay trawling through
hundreds of 1g campos, rusty fake nantans, meteorite dog statues,
meteorite caravans, meteorite deep impact movie DVD's meteorite lamps,
meteorite jewelry etc etc, I think if everyone on this list (most of
whom don't sell things like the meteorite caravans or cosmetics etc!)
put a * or a standard letter code somewhere in their auction it would
allow people to cut down on the 'dross' when an ebay search is done...

And of course people can always still search for 'meteorite' if they
 want a full search!

 Best

 Hi Gary,

Paul and Jim are the best! These guys spend a lot of time helping the
meteorite community. Without their dedication and time, this list and
meteorite community would not be where it is today.

Re: [meteorite-list] Gao, Gao Gao

2007-03-15 Thread JKGwilliam
The Gao -melt (H imb) is a wonderful meteorite to
look at. Here's a picture of a half stone owned by Keith Vazquez.

Hello Bernd, list,

Bernd, thanks much for your wise thoughts and
advices. Gao is indeed a very popular meteorite,
probably because it is as showy as abundant in
weight and (different) shapes. I can understand
Steve's falling in love for these.
I also second your suggestion, namely that Steve
should do more to valorize his Gao collection.

This brings me to a question that is probably
puzzling most of us since a while.
You might not ignore that besides our old good
friend Gao (H5) (that actually carries the
official name Gao-Guenié), there are 2 other Gaos (or Gao-Guéniés):

1) Gao(b) that is a CR (S1), found by Eric
Twelker in a parcel full of normal Gaos sent
to him from Burkina Faso. The 2 small stones he
got weighed 344 g (Bernd, by the way, a slice of
that stuff is just outstanding! I bet you also
got one See Eric's site: there are 2 pieces left!)

2) The Gao-melt (H imb) described and put for
sale by Eric Olson. This stuff is definitely far
different from Gao (H5) in that, when cut, this
almost black meteorite shows melts and rivers just as Portales or others.

Definitely a weird stuff. See pictures on Eric's site.
E. Olson is reporting a tkw of 570+ grams.
However, I got a few years ago 3 such Gao-melt
individuals from a quite different source
(directly from Burkina, not from Eric's source)
that are exactly the same. They already showed a
weird outline when complete (uncut). Once cut,
not only they showed the strange metled parts
but also huge vugs, some of which reaching 20+ mm !!
E. Olson is anouncing on his site since a time
that these are under study. Did someone got more recent news ?

Note: my source confirmed thet Gao imb and Gao
(H5) are (still being) found on the unique
strewnfield. To my knowledge, nothing is known
about the place where Gao(b) was found...

I suggest Steve starts inquiring about these
other 2 Gaos and perhaps envisages to extend
his collection to Gao, Gao and Gao.

By the way, here are the tkw's I have in my archives:

Gao-Guénié (H5): [EMAIL PROTECTED] kg
Gao-Guénié (H imb): [EMAIL PROTECTED] g (Olson's site)
Gao-Guénié (b) (CR)): 2@@344 g (Twelker's site)

Could someone (along with the two Erics) provide an update for these figures ?

Thanks and have a nice day all,

Zelimir

Knock, knock !

You seem to be building quite a collection of Gao! Go get 'em!

The next step in his obsession -- head for the strewn field.

Hello Steve and List,

First off: I must also admit that this is becoming a very impressive,
an awesome collection of Gao meteorites! Sincere congratulations!

The next best step after displaying them for all of us to see, would or could
now be to study them, to compare them, to look at their respective fusion
crusts, to describe their individual
characteristics, to do a little research on

their different degrees of weathering (and maybe even shock stage[s]), the
thickness or thinness of their fusion crusts, and so much more and then share
your observations with the List. This would give them a life.

Of course, you might also consider constructing a special Gao info page:

dates of fall / find, classification, history,
repositories, strewn field parameters,

scientific papers / articles, and, and, and, ...

The next step in his obsession -- head for the strewn field.

.. Well, why not!? Gao instead of London if the
risks involved are not too high!

He would surely come back with some personal finds or purchases.

Such specimens have an even higher, personal value!

Best regards,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Susceptibility meter for meteorite identification

2007-03-15 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie
Hello Listees,

I'm the proud owner of a SM30 susceptibility meter
instrument (from ZH Instruments) since yesterday.

I'll make several tests and on the strewnfield
researches in order to make a simple use process for
meteorite hunters.

Does anyone already used this instrument in meteorite
hunting ? What is the best method ?

Thanks for your advices as I'm a beginner user with
the SM30 ;-)

[meteorite-list] AUCKLAND METEORITE TILE FOR SALE

2007-03-15 Thread dean bessey
See also in my webpage here a picture of the hole that
the meteorite made through the inside ceiling tile.
http://www.meteoriteshop.com/aucklandmeteorite/aucklandtile.html
I will be a week before I mail out any orders as I am
still experimiting with glue and the office shop will
be a few days before they get more backing tiles.
This makes for a cute display that would look great in
any meteorite collection and a great gift.
