Re: [nysbirds-l] Common Gallinule, Mill Pond Park, Nassau (today)

2017-09-18 Thread Robert Taylor
thanks for reporting this to the listservI chased both your reports
today, now heading to Jamaica Bay East pond for Corey Finger's Avocet. I
did not refind the Gallinule but did see 11 Royal Terns at Jones Field 6.
I agree it's extremely frustrating when other birders don't report their
sightings- some intentionally don't list on ebird either. Please don't let
others discourage you from reporting - sharing is the right and unselfish
thing to do.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Northern Goshawk

2017-03-10 Thread Robert Taylor
There's been a continuing immature Northern Goshawk in the western part of
Massapequa Preserve - I've seen it 4 times in the last 2 weeks. (I live a
block away from the Preserve) From what I know it has been seen in the
Preserve as far north as the Walker Street parking lot and as far south as
Pittsburgh Ave. I last saw it yesterday afternoon flying over the
neighborhood west of the preserve around Jerusalem Ave. I know of another
occasion where it hunted a rabbit in someone's yard so it might pay to
check the trees in the surrounding area. Except for one occasion where it
was resting it seems very active, seemingly disappearing into the woods
however I believe it's accustomed to human activity and not skittish.

Good luck if anyone tries to find it- it's not easy to find - wanted to get
the word out before the weekend in case anyone was up for a challenge.

[nysbirds-l] Nyack Beach State Park: Trumpeter Swan

Hello,

I saw the continuing Trumpeter Swan on the Hudson River at Nyack Beach
State Park this morning - viewed from the parking lot, it frequents the
private dock to the south, but was closer to the lot when I was there and I
got good views of it. I was able to hear it vocalize also. It didn't have
any tags and I believe it's a wild bird. Photos can be found on my blog

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Shorebirds

2016-07-21 Thread Robert Taylor
Was at the ponds at Jones Beach West until 1:30 - lots of shorebirds: short
billed dowitchers, both yellowlegs, semi plovers and sandpipers as well as
the continuing Stilt and Pectoral Sandpipers. (west and east side
respectively) A NYC birder had reported hearing a possible Least Bittern
yesterday but I could not locate one.

When I returned to check out the coast guard sandbar, no shorebirds were
present - too many vacationers scared them off. Saw a flycatcher -
assuming Willow by the restroom building.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] Central Park this morning: Warblers

2016-04-27 Thread Robert Taylor
After a slow start at Strawberry Fields, things picked up in the ramble. I
personally had 13 warblers, other birders saw additional types. In the
ramble I saw: Northern Waterthrush, Ovenbird, Palm, Yellow, Common
Yellowthroat, Blue Winged, Northern Parula, Blackburnian, Nashville,
Yellow Rumped, good looks at a female Cape May, Black and White, and
Chestnut Sided.

Also saw Warbling and Blue Headed Vireos, Veery, Baltimore and Orchard
Orioles.

Was great seeing birders I know and birders I just met today. Special
thanks to the charming British man and his lady friend who connected me to
my lifer Orchard Orioles and Kathleen who was helpful guiding me through
the Ramble.

Good spring birding,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper, Oak Beach, Suffolk County, Yes

2016-04-05 Thread Robert Taylor
Saw it also but the police made some of us move along. Not allowed to stop
unless its an emergency plus looks suspicous taking photos at the scene of
the gilgo beach murders. The nice state trooper that i chatted with asked
me to show him the bird and thought it was a good looking bird also

[nysbirds-l] Avalon Park, Stony Brook: Robin

2016-04-01 Thread Robert Taylor
This isnt an April Fools joke- it was a leucistic Robin in the back in the
field area. Also seen were 6 Wood Ducks (5 males) and apparently the pond
is a Comorant rookery.

The Eurasian Teal continues at Mill Pond, Setauket

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL/ Calverton, Alley Pond

2016-03-25 Thread Robert Taylor
I spent a few hours at EPCAL today- highlights were several Meadowlarks,
Bluebirds, Field Sparrows - all singing. Also saw a Pine Warbler.

I walked the trail at the Alley Pond Environmental Centrr (Queens). Robins,
Redwing Blackbirds, Goldfinches, Song Sparrows, White Throated Sparrows
were everywhere as well as a stunning Fox Sparrow.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa
