Re: [Repeater-Builder] Tait tb7100 verses tb8100

2008-12-11 Thread Gareth Bennett (Ihug)
The TB7100 is only a toy compared to the TB8100 series. Actually the '7100
series is made utilising Tait Mobile boards that dont quite make specification.

  Hey guys,

I have a project where a customer wants to go all tait.
Here's the million dollar question, what repeater should we get?
What holds up better, the TB7100 or TB8100?
Can someone point out the differences?
I'm a little new to the tait world.

  Thanks,

[Repeater-Builder] Tait T700 Mobile Repeater

2008-12-11 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi All,

I came across a web site that had a listing for a Tait T700 Mobile 70cm
Repeater.
It appears that they are using one T700 and turning it into a full duplex unit.
I have a few T700 UHF radios sitting on my shelf and was wondering about using
them as a portable/moble repeater.
Does anyone have any information on the conversion?
I am currently doing a google search to see what I can find. Will also try Tait
here in NZ.

Thanks
Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSF-5000 PL encode deviation

2008-12-11 Thread Bob M.
As others have said, the PL/DPL deviation is NOT separately adjustable. It's a
fixed percentage of the total deviation. It is very clean however, so even
though it might measure rather high, it'll be quite inaudible. You'd have to
add a resistor somewhere to lower just the PL level.

Make sure you measure and set the deviation with the PL turned on. Your total
deviation should be set for 4.5 to 5.0 kHz; it will be less without PL.

I haven't seen a spec on the PL/DPL deviation in any MSF manual either.

 Gang,
New to MSF-5000's. Great piece of hardware. But more
 used to working with GE
Mastr II's. Have an MSF-5000 repeater we're trying
to get going on VHF. Have
experimented with both the on-board controller stand alone
 as well as off
board CAT. Several ee-pots to adjust in the software
 setting output audio
levels, but none specific to just PL encode level. We got
 it adjusted for 5
KHz output deviation, but noticed the PL encode deviation
 is a little high
at about 900 Hz. I usually like to see around 600 to 750
 Hz. I couldn't find
in the manuals anywhere what Moto spec'd PL deviation
 at for the MSF-5000.
Looks like the PL level is a fixed percentage without an
 independent output
level adjust. Probably something we are doing wrong in
 setting levels, but
wanted to get some feedback from the group.
 Thanks in advance!

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Opinions on telewave duplexers

2008-12-11 Thread Bob M.
I think it's just a matter of personal preference and where you're located.
Check with some other site owners and get their opinions too. I've dealt with
Telewave and their phone and e-mail support is quick and helpful.

 Hey guys,

I am in the process of designing a rather large repeater
 system.
 Any thoughts on telewave duplexers?
I've heard a lot of great things about them, but the
 only thing I have to
 compare it with is txrx.
 Thoughts?

 Thanks,
 Jed

geez-shouldn't the spec on a repeater's rf be tighter than a mobile?

I have three Telewave VHF duplexers in service which I bought new from Telewave
along with a number of other Telewave components, all very good and trusted
stuff!

I like Telewave and will continue to use them in the future.

I have nothing bad to say about Telewave, but if you are looking at TX/RX
and Telewave as the two choices, I'd pick TX/RX any day.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Opinions on telewave duplexers

2008-12-11 Thread Cort Buffington
I have a couple of UHF WACOMs that _appear_ identical to Telewave.
Telewave claims that they share a common design heritage (I think
thats the exact wording). I am extremely happy with the design, and I
have used Telewave support for other things and have found them to be
easily the best I've seen for support. I'm a ham, I buy one thing from
a company like Telewave every ten years, but they treat me like a
king. A HUMAN answers the phone and it usually takes ONE transfer to
be with the right person who will always help.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Opinion on Hardline

2008-12-11 Thread Michael Ryan
I have a 220 repeater ( budget project ) going on the air soon, hopefully.
I was given a 100ft or so of Times Microwave RG-331 ( alum. Jacket )
hardline, roughly the same specs as 1/2 Heliax though just a little larger
diameter it appears.
Should this be safe, even though perhaps not preferred, for use on a
repeater? - Mike
