[Scottish] Old PC's for charity etc

2004-08-16 Thread Mark Robinson
Hello all,

I have a number of old PC's, probably low end PII's, and some monitors
(15") that a client has just got rid of. She's happy for them to go to
a charitable project.

The hard disks will be completely blank.

Please email me off list if you know of a suitable recipient.

Cheers,
Mark

It got worse and worse. 56% loss for 1500 packets...

Very useful, and the guy I got on Demon's support line not only knew
about it, but was actually going to get me to install it!

We have been moving people away from Demon for a while, but I have to
say that this time they were very good. The guy was very helpful, and
while the fault process is extremely long and drawn out it all went
through fine. It turned out to be the ethernet side of the router (the
last mtr I ran with 500 packets only returned 13 packets!), and they
got BT out to replace it before lunch the following day...

[Scottish] Network testing tools?

2003-12-04 Thread Mark Robinson
Hello S.L.U.G,

I'm having trouble proving to Demon that there are problems with an
ADSL connection. It's _really_ slow at times, comes to a halt, then
everything seems to load. We've had pings with 19% packet loss to one
of Demon's own name servers!

Does anyone have any recommendations for network testing tools to try
and pin down the problem? I tried doing a traceroute and then running
pings to all hops along the route, but there's nothing consistent.

Cheers,

[Scottish] Weirdness

2003-09-15 Thread Mark Robinson
Hello S.L.U.G,

I have a debian fileserver that was playing silly buggers at me
earlier! It was complaining badly cos it's root filesystem was full,
which is not a bad complaint in itself, except that it's a 1.4G
partition and only has a couple of hundred meg on it! The available
disk space seemed to be dimishing over time, 32M disappeared this
afternoon with no files being added [EMAIL PROTECTED]"! I just rebooted it and
I've magically got 1.1G free. It's running 2.2.18, with an ext2
filesystem. It had been running fine for over 100 days, nothing in
usual log files... I tried running du earlier and nothing would admit
to using the space. I'm very confused, any ideas?

Hello S.L.U.G,

Firstly does anyone know what RAID 00, RAID 1E, RAID 1E0, RAID 5E are,
as defined by IBM on the ServeRAID-4LX? I think I can guess that 00 is
a stripe over two stripe sets, but the others? And don't even mention
the amount of disks needed for RAID 50!

Secondly I might have some old kit up for grabs (first come first
served to mcr at reason-technology.com). I need to see if there's
demand for it before my client is willing to donate it to a good
cause...

1) 2 x 24 port rackmount D-Link 10mbps only hub (possibly another one
of these hanging around here too)

2) 1 x 12 port version of above

3) 1 x 8 port rackmount D-Link switching hub. Not sure what speed...

4) 1 (very old) Instant Internet ISDN (I think) router. May add 10% to
your electric bill! May even be able to find admin software for it.
Does IPX-TCP/IP too I think. No, I don't know if you can run Linux on
it :-)

They changed to AVM Felix cards (no longer hisax), which don't work in
