Filter not working as expected
Hello Batters! In trying to trash a spate of like minded emails I made a filter that seems to have no effect but I would think it should. The text in the body of the email varies slightly from message to message BUT there are a few words common to all suitable for filtering on. The offending target text is always something like: Banned CD! Government don't want me to sell it. The (edited) text version of my filter is below. QUESTION: Why doesn't it work?! BeginFilter Name: Banned CD 1 Active: 1 Source: \\mailbox\Inbox Target: \\mailbox\Trash CopyFolder: none MainSet: 30banned MainSet: 40gov MainSet: 30want MainSet: 30sell Thanks, Rich Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello rich, MainSet: 40gov Should be '30gov'. That is, Location should be Text and not Kludges. -- Best regards, Miguel A. Urech (El Escorial - Spain) Using The Bat! v2.01.3 Winamp OFF: Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

MainSet: 40gov M Should be '30gov'. That is, Location should be Text and not Kludges. (I am pretty sure) I had it set to TEXT (not kludges) FIRST! (I am pretty sure) I had it set to TEXT (not kludges) then, once it failed to work as expected, I think I set the gov string to KLUDGES from TEXT as the true word I am trying to cite is Government. -- Rich Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hi Rich, @7-Jan-2004, 05:27 -0500 (07-Jan 10:27 UK time) rich gregory [RG] in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to MAU: M Should be '30gov'. That is, Location should be Text and not Kludges. RG (I am pretty sure) I had it set to TEXT (not kludges) FIRST! RG (I am pretty sure) I had it set to TEXT (not kludges) then, once RG it failed to work as expected, I think I set the gov string to RG KLUDGES from TEXT as the true word I am trying to cite is RG Government. Kludges is the TB word for Message headers only. So it won't work the way you're expecting. TB's signal strings are case insensitive by default. You have to go out of your way (please refer to the Help topic on the Sorting Office and signal strings for the full explanation) to make strings case sensitive. -- Cheers -- .\\arck D Pearlstone -- List moderator SB! v2.03 Beta/28 on Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 ' pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hi Rich, On Wednesday, January 07, 2004 at 9:20 AM, you wrote: In trying to trash a spate of like minded emails I made a filter that seems to have no effect but I would think it should. I'm familiar with the messages you're describing. I don't think it is a filter problem. The problem is that what appears to be plain text is actually text interspersed with numerous (usually bogus) html tags. So you're filtering on banned which is what is visible, but what's actually in the source is bsome html tagannanother html taged. The filter doesn't ignore the html tags. And since the tags are randomly placed and can be made up of anything, it's near to impossible to write a filter specifically for it. Take a look at the source of the message (F9) and see if these tags are interspersed throughout the message. Your best bet to filter this type of spam is to use the spam plug-in(s) or Popfile or something similar - a Bayesian filter that learns as spammers come up with new tricks. -- Regards, Terry Using The Bat! v2.01.3 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

T ... what appears to be plain text is actually interspersed with bogus html T tags. So banned is actually bsome html tagannanother html taged. T The [TB!] filter doesn't ignore these html tags. Take a look at the source of the T message (F9) and see ... these tags ... interspersed throughout the T message. T Your best bet to filter this type of spam is to use the spam plug-in(s) or T Popfile or something similar - a Bayesian filter that learns as spammers T come up with new tricks. My Bayesian filter (a SpamPal plug-in) does mark such messages as spam and a TB filter does file such messages in a suspect folder. Though as a rule I do try hard to avoid such drastic actions I was hoping to send THESE messages straight to the trash. Thanks for the info above. I thought my TB! viewer did not recognize HTML at all but I see this is not so. Thx -- Rich Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
